I literally go to coffee shops to get their hot chocolate. Every. Time. Because who can mess up a hot chocolate?! Unfortunately, due to everything else we got, this place doesn't get a 5-star rating. My friend got some pumpkin themed coffee and it tasted like hot, bitter water. We were also recommended to try the gluten-free chocolate cupcake because we wanted something sweet and I will never eat anything gluten-free ever again. The cupcake fell apart before it even touched my mouth and it was the dryest thing I've ever had. Try the hot cocoa, though! Java Cabana is a pretty lovely place to study. It's pretty small but it's super homey. An iced coffee is 3 dollars and comes in a nice mason jar style class - it's nothing special, it's just iced coffee. I very much appreciate that it's open on Sundays and also open *late-ish* on Sundays, because it seems like there aren't many coffee shops around that are. The staff here is really nice and the decor of the place feels really artsy. Also, it's pretty cool that the kitchen looks and feels like a home kitchen, which definitely adds to the neighborly feel of this place. They accept credit card! read more

The WORST-MOST RACIST service EVER. Walked in at 10am today. Stood in line. Ordered at 10:04am. The cashier/cook/server (idk) seemed immediately disgusted at my presence. ZERO customer service. I asked for a veggie wrap on wheat, he immediately SNAPPED BACK "Oh we don't have BREAD here!" I said "Sir, a wheat tortilla." Him "Oh we don't do that here." Me "My apologies, some places do." Him "We'll we don't, it'll be 20 minutes." I went & Saturday in my cart the inside atmosphere of the coffee shop was immediately uncomfortable. For over half my life I have loved this eclectic little spot right off Cooper & Young in Midtown - it was hip before hipsters existed. I haven't been in my hometown for years - but I am now - so this was a must-visit. I was actually afraid it may no longer be there, but it was & it's better than I recall. The ambiance is chill and funky, there's eye candy everywhere and a ton of original pieces to purchase from Memphis area artists. Every table is mismatched and vintage with two chess boards available, as well as checkers. The music fit the Sunday vibe nicely with tracks from The Velvet Underground and Van Morrison playing at just the right volume. The bathroom is teensy still, but tidy & clean. The prices are corporate comparable but who wouldn't rather support local? I had the dirty chai (yum), one of my group had a lavender mocha (try it!), and the other had tea. So amazing! We were going to just carry out but because of the space, we cozied up and chatted for a while. Outside, there's plants & tables & chairs to welcome you, along with a stoop that proclaims "you are loved" in concrete. I can't think of a more endearing place. read more

In a quest to set up camp (aka my virtual office) in every coffee shop in town, I held Yelp Office Hours here today. My husband, 1 month old son and I spent a couple hours here mingling with some yelpers. While I have always loved the Cabana, I had always thought that it would prove to be an oddly unsettling place to work. It's tiny and a bit cramped with fabulous vintage furniture and crazy, bold, stimulating colors on the walls. I didn't think I'd be able to concentrate on much other than people watching (one of my favorite past times) and wishing and dreaming I had some of that fabulous furniture in my own home. Today proved me wrong, and I am oh so very glad it did. I was so comfortable in here- in fact, I felt like I was in a friend's living room. Something about the mid-afternoon ambiance to this little spot coupled with the fantastic soundtrack playing in the background just made me feel oh so homey. I finally got to try some food menu items today. I opted for the veggie quesadilla- black beans, fresh spinach and cheese inside a spinach flavored tortilla shell served with spicy salsa. It was pretty freaking stellar. Though I'll advise you not to order yours with the hazelnut latte like I did. Poor flavor combining on my part- regardless both were delicious. My husband introduced me to my new favorite Cabana coffee concoction today- the Funky Monkey. It tasted like chocolate covered frozen bananas with whipped cream swimming on top. I never would have thought banana syrup would play well with coffee, but boy was I wrong. Simply divine. Had I not been on latte number 3, I might have ordered my very own. I'll definitely be making the Cabana a regular stop when it comes to setting up my virtual office. Working from home means it is key to get out and experience some different locale. Java didn't disappoint today, as an added bonus the little guy seemed to enjoy himself as well and was surprisingly well behaved. I'll make a coffee junkie outta him yet! read more

Was desperate for coffee so came here. Not sure how I feel about this place. The woman working at the counter was on the phone for a while and there was quite a few people that had come and gotten in line at that point. The coffee was pretty strong, which isn't necessarily bad but just wasn't what I was expecting when I asked for the caramel latte. I came here for breakfast this morning around 9 am when it opened. The coffee house was void of costumers when we arrived and the barista was stand off-ish. I ordered a Sweet Jane(caramel sauce, vanilla, double espresso, steamed milk, and whipped creme) with a buttered bagel, and my friend ordered an Iced Chai Tea with the Sassy Omelette. The drinks took long to arrive, and the food even longer (...why did my bagel take 10 minutes?). Although the service was poor, the food and drinks were pretty good. I originally wanted an Italian soda but they were out of soda water - which is a bummer because that's kind of the best part isn't it? :( Anyway, the atmosphere of the place is awesome. Second hand store style, very comfy and interesting. The staff could've been better. But it's Midtown, what do you expect? I came here after evacuating from nola with my friend who is born & raised in Memphis and the barista was rude from the 1st question that I asked until the time we left. When I asked about the tortilla & omelette he responded with an extremely rude & condescending attitude then complained about Memphis becoming overpriced and when I said that at least it wasn't about to be under water as nola may become bcuz of Hurricane Ida & he called nola stupid & the people there are stupid to live there. He gave my friend the wrong order and was more annoyed than apologetic for his own mistake. He treated us like we were from NYC, while my friend used to play music in this cafe 11 years ago. He condescended me 3 times & was , to put it plainly, a rude piece of dung. Don't waste your time or money in this place. And if he's the owner, he should sell his business and go on a Buddhist retreat to adjust his obvious hateful attitude. My 2 cents read more

Great, strong, inspired coffee! I had a doppio with soy milk, which was a work of art served in a beautiful turquoise cup to boot. Hubby had the lavender mocha, which was not at all cloying but tasty and just right. The atmosphere is super cool. Some gluten free options. I wanted to like this place much more than I actually did. The espresso is just not good. I've come back multiple times hoping I just had a bad day, but it's always the same. It's overly bitter and doesn't have any real flavor in it. The foam is usually a bit of a mess and it leads to the flavor being unbalanced. The coffee was Ugly Mug, which is good, but they didn't have any special options for it. The lady who's making the drinks and has been there every time I've been in is really nice, but the clientele has been a little aloof, which is unusual for coffeeshops in Memphis. read more

I walked into this place because a friend recommended me and I fell in love with it even before I walked in the door. It's home-y, comfortable and fun! It's very neat and eclectic with the art on the walls, the vibrant colors and the vintage look. The person working was a very welcoming and nice gentleman. It's quite an interesting place. As some other reviewers said, it's pretty "hipster" with an eclectic 60s vibe. I ordered an iced coffee which was served in a mason jar. I'd give the coffee 5 stars; however, it felt like you had to be a regular to really enjoy being there (it was my first time) which is why I gave it 3 stars. I also went on a Thursday which was open mic night. I went there to try out a new potential study spot, but it wasn't the greatest place to study (with it being open mic night and all). Such a cute little place. The lady there made us an amazing grilled cheese sandwich and I got an out of this world chai tea latte. I loved that pretty much everything was vegetarian and the salad dressing was light and simple. Having recently returned to my home town after a twelve year hiatus, I am thrilled to discover that Java Cabana has preserved its integrity and charm as a community center. Its homespun, kitsch-vintage ambience and warm staff always give me a pick-me-up. It's a sweet spot to anonymously concentrate on work while sharing my peripheral space with others... or a pleasant respite from said work in conversation with friendly and interesting people. The atmosphere is unpretentious and homey, and the drink menu is tantalizing. Java is the only place in town where I can sip a perfect almond steamer from a turquoise mug large enough to fit my entire face into (which comes in handy for getting to the cinnamon goodness that settles at the bottom of the cup). The Lisa Marie (a decadent combo of cocoa, dark roast coffee, raspberry syrup and whipped cream) is a perfect antidote for that blustery day when you thought you'd rather be in bed. The added sprinkles delight my inner five-year-old to no end. They make a mean breve as well...and the quesadillas have been known to foster addiction in vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. The owner has a nose for talent, which is evident in her choice of entertainment; she hosts an Open Mic Night on Thursdays for local luminaries (original poetry and songs with not a single cover tune to suffer through, thank you sweet Jesus) as well as inspiring performances by some incredibly talented national and international wayfarers.
