Jar's interior seems reminiscent of Dal Rae Steak House in Pico Rivera established in 1958 in a mid 20th Century, sophisticated "Mad Men" style where holding a dry gin Martini in one hand, chewing a meaty steak in a sharkskin suit was the epitome of chIc. John, our waiter, continued that smooth, suave, urbane, mid century cool by being informative, helpful, intuitive to our dining needs. He has a excellent grasp of the wines served at Jar so he can narrow down a choice by letting you sample a glass while listening to you critique the merits or drawbacks. 1) Sour dough bread with chewy crust & moist, dense bread, Sweet butter. 2) Castelfranco Salad: Castelfranco refers to a cross between Escarole and Radicchio Trevisano. Mild bitterness, reddish violet, white, fleshy, watery crunch. Ruccola is bitter, peanut oil tasting fibrous green, Marcona almonds, slIvered sweet stIcky date. Agrodolce/sweet sour Sherry based dressing. Complex yet refreshing. 3) Coq au Vin: Generous serving of two thigh-legs falling-off-the-bone portions, Pearl onions adding sulfurous funk, Applewood smoked bacon imparting smoky, porky Umami, Crimini mushrooms w/ foresty earthiness slow braised all together in light red wine liquid. For me, more reduction of the red wine could have made for a richer, meatier finish, but this Coq au Vin was still darn good on a rainy, cold night. Only the Coq au Vin from former Canelé (r.i.p.) may have been better. 3) Jar Fries is definitely a must get if you're a Pommes Frites fan. Crispy on the surface, more soft, moist with a sweet, ineffably earthy Umami inside. Mild garlic scent and almost animal fat satisfaction from high quality olive oil. Pea Tendrils seem to be quick sautéed in chicken broth along w/ a random clove of garlic & dried, piquant Japanese chiles to mildly stimulate the taste buds. Bright, deep green, there is a green vegetal aliveness. 3a) Sampled the Shortrib boneless Pot Roast in a light au jus like braising liquid. Soft, velvety w/ one side blackened to add a cushy contrasting chaw. Caramelized onion, roasted sweet, earthy, soft carrots. 1-3b) Château Neuf du Pape from Avignon: Suggested by John. Primarily Grenache, up to 17 other Rhône grape varietals can be blended in. Almost a black ruby red. Light scent of dark plum, blueberry, tobacco, leather. Blueberry, blackberry, smoothness followed by a subtle tannic bitterness, sourness, dryness to balance the light jammy sweetness. 4) Butterscotch Pudding is rich & thick, creamy like an Italian Budino. Soupçon of smoky, scorched caramel, salt, buttery, not overly sweet. 4a) House coffee: touch bitter, mildly smoky roast, refreshingly acidic. This is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. My high-end version of Chili's, if you will. Now... if you're a serious meat eater and are interested in the restaurant's a capabilities as a chop shop, scroll right on past this review because me? I don't know nothing about that lifestyle; I'm here for the girls that love a good cocktail and splurging on a gossipy, 2-hour appetizer adventure with their best friends. Yes, it's pricey. Yes, the parking is awful. Yes, it's worth it. The vibe is very eclectic-- it's a place that oozes pretentiousness but doesn't take it seriously. Be prepared to see a lot of grey hair and to be confused by the dress code. The service is excellent and it feels intimate without getting stuffy. Just to warn, seating is fairly close together if you're not in the center area. Drinks are always good and boozy, the lychee martini is one of my favorites, hopefully you can catch them when they have it. We literally stumbled upon this place by mistake. The look from the outside reminded us of an old school restaurant from the 70's, the kind you might see Columbo in, as he's questioning a potential perp. That's just the kind of place we like so we had to try it. Very glad we did. Jar is, Just Another Restaurant, but it's a very good one! We walked in just as they opened and sat at the bar. We were only going to stay for a drink but we stayed for a couple of hours. Chuck came over right away and he did a great job of taking care of us throughout the evening. Gin Gimlets and Martini's were made just right, Black Mussels and Crab Deviled Eggs, both were delicious. The Signature Pot Roast is also fantastic (a great comfort dish). Other plates on the menu looked amazing as they were coming out of the kitchen but we didn't get to them on this visit. This place has a lot of regulars and repeat customers. There is a family vibe here, due in part to the accessibility of owner and executive chef, Suzanne Tracht. She seems to at least recognize the regulars and appreciate their repeat business, as she was visible and chatting with some of her customers throughout the night. The serving staff also seems to know many of their customers by name. That's always a good thing. Jar has a nice warm feeling about it. Very tasty food, very good service and a very nice vibe at Jar. I guess there's a risk in writing this review. I'm still sat here eating, so I suppose there's a chance they'll royally mess my dinner up. But...who are we kidding, it's five star for a reason and I'm here bout to tell you why! From first bite tonight, for some reason, all that popped in my mind was "These people definitely taste their food"...and that's what I'm talking about. It's beyond evident that they care immensely on what each ingredient is going to taste like. This applies to everything on the menu. They cook with purpose, with intention, and it's abundantly clear. Have you ever had that experience where a server asked "how would you like that cooked"... to clearly get something very different, leaving you with thinking "I honestly don't even know why they asked".... well, that doesn't happen at Jar. When they ask you how you'd like your steak, they intend on cooking it that way. Perhaps it's because they know how, perhaps it's because they care, regardless, you're getting you're getting exactly what you've asked for. And it's really good. I took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day and was wholly disappointed. For the amount of money we paid (up front) to reserve a table, the 'experience' fell far short of expectations. Ambiance was nice, but they packed us in uncomfortably tight next to other couples. The menu was extremely limited even for a limited menu, and the exorbitant Valentine's Day pricing made it hard to appreciate the mediocre food. Service was adequate and our server was friendly and attentive, even so it was far from the 'experience' promised, and more like an overpriced meal in an overcrowded restaurant. I ordered a medium-rare rib roast and it came out rare. When I asked for it to be cooked a little while longer it came out medium-well. People around us were also complaining to the waiter about the food. Overall I consider this a bust and won't be back. read more

Had a bit of a wait for our reservation (we showed up on time) but the mâítre d' was very good about being aware of our wait and keeping us updated on the availability of the table. We had a very nice table - ambiance was elegant but fairly minimalistic - felt a little like it could use a bit of a refresh but overall was nice. Menu is known to be "old favorites" so nothing super modern but everything was very well prepared and very tasty and nicely served. The waiter said that ran out of halibut as they usually do, very early in the night. Unfortunate but still many other things to choose from. He offered a salmon dish that wasn't actually on the menu. Covid measures were followed well. We thought the check in desk was a little oddly placed as you have to make a steep step up (ladies in heels) from the street - really could use some sort of ramp or something. Wine list was good but not extensive - both my hubby and I were satisfied with our wine selection. Drink list looked interesting but we didn't partake. As a starter we had the celery root soup which was excellent. It came very quick after ordering. My husband and I both enjoy a pork chop on the rare side. They prepare to medium but it was still delicious. Maybe could use a little more of the char sui marinade or even a little on the side to make it a little more flavorful. My lemongrass chicken was also excellent. A little spicy, went really well with the pea shoots we ordered on the side. But the star of the night was the banana cream pie. We'd literally come back just for dessert. It was like sabayon - very delicate topping of whipped cream, pie crust was buttery and flaky. The only thing that kinda made the experience less nice was the very loud couple sitting next to us who felt the need to talk loud enough so everyone knew their business. I felt like such a grown-up eating here. Jar's not the trendiest place, with the sort of moneyed, older clientele you'd find at an LA Philharmonic concert, but as such it has a classiness to it. There's something about the clubby mid-sized room and the soft warm lighting that makes you feel like you're in another, slightly more sophisticated city. Our waiter was funny and friendly and our dishes were expertly prepared. My Castelfranco salad was fine; my chicken schnitzel superb; the side of Brussels sprouts with kimchi out of this world. The butterscotch pudding has a little more grit to it than Mozza's silky smooth budino, but I still wolfed it down. The only bummer was that they were not at that moment serving coq au vin, which I know Jar does well. I'll keep an eye on the menu online to see if it returns. read more

My husband and I came here for our second anniversary. We made a reservation for a weekday around 8pm. I wish I could give this place more stars but the service was the issue. My usual down fall for a restaurant. Service: out table was not ready when we got here even though the restaurant was like a third empty. We sat at the bar and waited...literally. The bartender didn't even come up to us for like 15 minutes buy had no problem chit chatting with the regulars sitting next to us. Rude. When we finally got our table the hostess came up to us and said she could help us to our table as it was now ready. She picked up our drinks and proceeded to spill my husband's beet down my back. Great... We were seated next to a large party of about 20 men. Not ideal but ok. We purposely came out on a weeknight so we didn't have to deal with "crowds". Our waitress was great once we got to the table. Food: Our food was absolutely delicious. We started with clam strips for an appetizer. For the main courses My husband had a bone in pork chop and I had a ribeye and French fries. We had a pudding for dessert. *Not that we wanted to be compensated for anything for what happened at the bar but come on...A drink or a dessert or something should have been taken off our bill. Had a lovely dinner here recently and took advantage of the outdoor seating they've created on the sidewalk median and street. Service was very attentive and nice. I personally had the skirt steak which was delicious, along with a spicy margarita (also great). Our table shared a couple of sides: the duck fried rice, Brussels sprouts, creamed corn, and creamed spinach. The rice, corn and spinach were all good. The Brussels sprouts were a bit odd - I am so used to crispy sprouts now, and these were just lightly sautéed I believe. It looked like a salad, but was warm, and overly salty. It was a special pop up menu night with John Cox. The biggest smoker I have ever seen was out front smelling delicious. I got the $120 special menu. We of course ordered the char sui pork chop, ribeye, and a pork shank. Everything was really good, even the sour dough bread. We will be back for more char shu pork chop cause that was our favorite. 2019 DineLA #3: January Winter Edition - $59 Dinner Menu + celebrating my actual Birthday too! Tonight, was definitely a couple of 1st Time Ever(s): 1). 1st 2019 monthly meetup dinner with my dinner mates, 2). 1st time ever my actual birthday falling on a monthly meetup dinner, 3). 1st time ever having the best complimentary bar snacks, 4). 1st time ever dining at Jar, and 5). 1st time ever eating at Jar during DineLA, and 6). 1st time ever meeting Chef Suzanne Tracht of Jar, who just happened to be hanging out that night at the restaurant on her night off. It was so cool getting to meet her right as we were picking up our umbrellas and getting ready to leave. Chef Tracht was so sweet and warm! Thank you again for creating the amazing DineLA meal and topping off my birthday celebration with a picture! Parking: Street metered parking (meters end at 8pm) as well as valet. My birthday celebration kicked off with a birthday drink at the bar with Yelper Isobel L. I went with the $16 Sourberry Cocktail and Isobel got the $17 Spa Water (thanks again, Isobel!). On a cold and super rainy Wednesday night, both of our delicious cocktails warmed us up right away, especially, me (I ended up getting a mild and rosy Asian Flush, hehe!). In addition to our drinks, we were also served two complimentary bowls of snacks. One bowl contained assorted mixed nuts and the other bowl had their house made potato chips served with their house made horseradish sauce for dipping (omg, so good!). By far, this is the best bar snack I ever had! Also, the two bartenders serving us were also sweet and attentive. Excellent service at the bar! After our drinks, the hostess was able to seat us 30mins early from our 7:30 p.m. reservation, which was awesome. It also allowed us to not only survey the whole dining and take in the fabulous retro décor, but it also allowed us to check out various dishes that patrons were eating (whether it was from the DineLA menu or not). Next, our main server, John Z. appeared and greeted us. He presented us with the dinner menus, wine and cocktails list and asked what type of water we wanted. Later on, he came back when Yelper Gary I. finally arrived. Here's what we got: Drinks: We all had ice water. The servers were spot on with refilling our glasses, excellent! Complimentary Bread and Butter (unlimited too!): The sourdough bread was delicious! Crispy on the outside, while staying soft and tender on the inside. The butter was also tasty, at room temperature, smooth, creamy and easily spreadable. 1st Course (Starter): We all got the Castelfranco Salad. The castelfranco (part of the radicchio family) paired with wild arugula, Manchego cheese, dates, Marcona almonds and mixed with a sherry vinaigrette was refreshing, light and sweet tasting and wholesome. 2nd Course (Main): Isobel and I got Jar's Signature Pot Roast, while Gary got the Coq au Vin. Since this was my first time having the pot roast, I enjoyed it. The pot roast also comes with caramelized onions and a roasted carrot for that yummy veggie aspect. The meat itself was tender and succulent while surrounded in its au juice (the sourdough bread is great for sopping it up). The horseradish sauce is also included with my meal, but I ended up using it to dip the Jar Fries instead. Family Style Sides: Jar Fries and Pea Tendrils are also included with our entrees. The huge heaping bowl of Fries was awesome and a delight to our eyes, lol! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, without tasting oily. Dipped into the horseradish sauce, tastes so good! As for the Pea Tendrils, they were also fantastic! Cooked in chicken broth with pieces of garlic and chili added in, yum! 3rd Course (Dessert): We all got the Butterscotch Pudding, similar to an Italian Budino. Topped with caramel sauce and heavy whipped cream, it was a great way to end the meal. As for my dessert, it was topped off with a Birthday Candle (which scared and excited me because the sparklers were coming out it, lol!) while Isobel and Gary sang Happy Birthday to me (aww, thanks, guys!). Service: Our main server, John Z., was engaging, fun and attentive. He was so sweet to take my picture with Chef Tracht (thanks again, John Z.!) as well as the rest of the servers, who were also sweet, courteous and attentive. Service here is very spot on. Ambience and Décor: Spacious, clean, warm and inviting. You definitely feel the retro Mad Men and La La Land (Movie) vibes in there. If you want a more private dining area other than the main dining room, request the small alcove area next to the bar. There's only one restroom per sex. The Women's Restroom was well-maintained and well-stocked. Overall, my Birthday dinner and 1st Time Ever(s) here was wonderful! Went for Valentines day. A pretty subpar prix fixe menu, which wasn't on the website unfortunately. That's the reason we went there, they didn't post it online or answer calls to confirm the regular menu or prix fixe. I had the New York strip, pretty average. My husband got the pot roast which was pretty good. When asked for steak sauce was told they didn't have anything other than what was on the menu. Weird...no steak sauce. Service was good. But what really made this a 1 star review is valet scratched my car. And it's a pretty sizeable scratch that I'm sure was heard when they did it. Was charged 10 to get a 800+ scratch on my car and then another 100 per person for sauceless/flavorless steak. Just a grand ol time all around. Thanks Jar.... read more

The scallops and oysters were delicious, the butter lettuce salad perfect, steak and halibut to perfection and the dessert cookies warm melted in our mouths paired with a delicious Italian red wine to die for and a yummy gimlet drink from scratch. Did I mention the fries and onion rings were also fabulous oh Yesssss! and the side dressings to perfection. The service was attentive polite and clean. I have no complaints about this place. The poor reviews surprise me. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and happy. The ambiance wasn't quiet but dimly lit and offered an intimate atmosphere if you want. All the food we had was great, starting from the bread! We had the soup of the day, Cesar salad, halibut special and coq au vin. All delicious!! The chicken was rich and I was hoping for thighs but got legs, but the amount of chicken was enough. We also shared fries and Brussels sprouts. Have never had sprouts with kimchi and that was delicious. We ended the meal with cookies and a sundae. Experienced Jar for the first time on July 7th. The food and atmosphere were great. We started at the bar and had wine and fresh made potato chips with horseradish dip. We also had their crab filled deviled eggs. Both were delicious. I particularly liked how there were five deviled eggs on the plate! We later migrated to the dining room and were seated at a comfortable table for two that gave us a great view of the dining room. Our dinner order included soup, onion rings, pot roast, and their butterscotch budino. Just like at the bar, everything was delicious. I regret I hadn't been to Jar sooner but I'll definitely return again in the near future. The friendly and knowledgeable staff rounded out our wonderful dining experience. One of my wife and my favorites. I have tried so many of the entrees. Not a clinker in any of them. Great service from a professional wait staff. Every time with different wait staff they know their specials. Place runs like a Swiss watch Suzanne come around when she is not in the kitchen to actually find out from the customers how they like their food. She shows a real interest in her customers. I went back to Jar last month for the first time since my initial visit in 2009. My experience was pretty different, in part, I'm sure, because I'm 32 now instead of 23. Jar is an upscale restaurant that's nice without being trendy, and I was still probably at least ten years younger than the average diner. Matt B. and I went for a Saturday night date, to celebrate after I'd met a major work deadline. We were able to book an 8:30 table not long in advance. The restaurant was packed at that hour, but emptied out over the course of our meal. We were the second-to-last table left in the dining room (the last was obviously a law firm summer dinner--a familiar meal to both me and my husband), after all the old people went home. I don't mind dining with old people, incidentally. I found Jar's atmosphere lively and pleasant, and I rather liked that it was relatively quiet, even when it was busy. We're used to industrial chic dining rooms these days, so the white tablecloths and warm lighting felt extra luxurious. Service was excellent. Our waiter Tomek was friendly and attentive, an outstanding server. There were a couple tiny mix-ups when our food came, and he handled them smoothly. We ended up with some extra sauce and an extra side on the house, with almost no delay in the sauces and sides we'd ordered. We brought our own wine and paid the corkage, but we started our night with a round of cocktails. Jar's cocktails are in the $16 to $19, and I wouldn't particularly recommend them. They're not bad, just not as interesting or well executed as the craft cocktails you get in the new hip spots with the uncomfortable communal seating. I had The Criminal, a refreshing, sweet highball of Yola mezcal, strawberry rhubarb jam, and lime. Matt had the Serengeti, another highball with Bulleit bourbon, muddled ginger, lemon, and candied ginger syrup. Sort of like a Penicillin but a bit weak and watery. The food was solid, starting with good white bread and butter. We ordered oysters on the half shell and crab deviled eggs as appetizers, and both were great. The oysters came garnished with radish and chives, served on ice with lemon wedges and a black pepper ponzu sauce. They were fresh, and I liked the flavorful ponzu. I also quite enjoyed the crab deviled eggs, which were supple and tasty and easy to gobble down--Matt doesn't eat crab or eggs, so I put away all five of them on my own. I remembered not loving Jar's signature pot roast, so we decided to skip the braises and go for some steak and scallops. We ordered the prime rib-eye, on the rare side of medium rare, and this was a juicy 14-ounce steak, tender and red with a lovely sear. We got it with green peppercorn sauce, and that was nice, as were the creamy horseradish and tamarind, which came for no apparent reason. The scallops were good, if not exceptional, and I thought they were kind of overpriced at something like $42 for three scallops with no side (they were a special, so we didn't see the price until the check came). We had the lobster béarnaise with the scallops, and that worked pretty well. All sides seem to come a la carte, and we opted for french fries and sautéed pea tendrils, and got a freebie of brussels sprouts. The fries were great, crispy and golden, tossed with garlic and parsley. The pea tendrils were a decent green side, sautéed with garlic. I liked the brussels sprouts too, though they were served with something Jar was calling kimchi--mild pickled cabbage, I guess, probably the whitest kimchi in Los Angeles. We had a peach turnover with vanilla ice cream for dessert, and this was great--hot and cold, tart and sweet, with plenty of crumbly pastry dough. It came highly recommended by Tomek, and he did not steer us wrong. Jar isn't the most exciting restaurant, but there's something to be said for a reliable classic chophouse with a convivial atmosphere, decent food that never changes, and stellar service. I'm sure I'll be back for more steak and wine dinners. Maybe with more frequency, seeing as I am getting older. read more

Executive chef Suzanne Tracht's contemporary approach to a 1940s steakhouse definitely had that lounge-y vibe to it and the food, although simple, was well executed and delicious! I made reservations for a party of four Saturday night at 8pm and despite the fact I had to push the reservation back a few times, there was no fuss with adjusting my rez. We were running late, so we parked at valet (only 6 bucks) but there was plenty of street parking, as well. As we stepped inside, we realized the restaurant was packed to capacity! We were invited to wait by the bar, which was pretty much elbow to elbow, where we all partook in a glass of bubbly while snacking from a complimentary bowl of their madly addicting potato chips. Seriously, that stuff must be crack laced! After about 10 minutes, we were seated at a table for four with plush seating on castered dining chairs which were surprisingly comfortable! The decor and atmosphere had a charming throwback feel exemplified by the muted tones of the walls, spacey saucer like pendants hovering above and clean lines throughout the dining space. Think mid century modern ala Mad Men. Chic, refined and casually elegant IMO. Our server was quick yet courteous and friendly as she kindly presented us with our menus and explained the specials for the evening. She offered some intriguing suggestions, as well. In fact, we found some of the recommendations too enticing to pass up so we went with the lobster blossoms, soft shell crab and the famous crab deviled eggs and a bottle of bubbly to share for the table. Bread came out in no time flat with a side of house butter. The bread was surprisingly warm with a crispy buttery crust and warm, fluffy center. Crab Deviled Eggs - I dove into these first and they did not disappoint! The filling was fragrant, creamy and mouthwatering good. I'm not quite sure if the crab was altogether necessary but it definitely didn't hurt the dish by any stretch. Lobster blossoms - Crisp tempura batter with a fluffy, creamy center. The contrast in texture was very pleasant and the handy zucchini stalk complemented the light and airy batter perfectly. The accompanying ponzu sauce added a subtle hint of lip smacking tang to this luscious and delicate dish. Soft Shell Crab - The single crab nestled on a large white plate looked a bit sad and alone for some strange reason. But don't let the stark plating fool you, the crab itself was very well seasoned and the smoky dipping sauce was quite flavorful. Pot Roast - Served with perfectly softened carrots and caramelized onions, this dish was literally comfort food personified. The meat was a tender boneless shortrib that fell apart at the slightest nudge of a fork. Braised in a dry sherry, leeks, and fragrant garlic - this signature dish was simple in presentation yet masterfully prepared. Charshu Pork Chop - Despite being a bit on the firm side, the flavors were on point. The accompanying duck fried rice was a perfect compliment to this whimsical play on classic Chinese cuisine. Coq Au Vin - this classic French dish was beautifully prepared with the most tender chicken I've had in a very long time! You could tell this chicken was stewing in wine all day to exhibit such rich depths of flavor! Prime Filet with a béarnaise sauce - Honestly, this dish reminded me why this is indeed a steakhouse because it was exemplary through and through! The filet was thick cut with a gorgeous seared crust to it and the most beautifully pink center that was oozing with natural juices. The first bite you ask? Heavenly! It was buttery soft and to say it was tender would be an understatement! Coupled with the rich and flavorful bearnaise sauce, this dish was quite possibly culinary perfection! The black kale was delicious, considering it was drenched in drawn butter and the cream corn was marvelous! The fresh tidbits of corn bathed in a light & sweet cream sauce was a sheer delight to enjoy and it was the first side dish to disappear within moments of hitting the table. Banana Creme Pie - Served on a flaky and buttery tart crust, the pie was fluffy, with chunks of fresh banana mixed into a richly decadent creamy pie filling. The pie was laced with a thin ribbon of caramel providing a sticky sweet contrast to the pillowy soft banana creme. Butterscotch Pudding - Velvety smooth with a rich & creamy finish. It was decadence in every bite. Overall, I'd have to say I had a pretty great first experience at Jar. The food was indeed fantastic with accompanying service being quite attentive and efficient. While not exhibiting the most inventive dishes, Jar does in fact showcase fantastic home-cooked food that can make any occasion feel warm, comfortable and pleasant. With that said, for a restaurant of this caliber, some would assume most of the dishes are a bit too pedestrian. But make no mistake, the cuisine is done with distinction and the experience is definitely praiseworthy! Happy Eats! read more

I took my boyfriend here for dinner on his birthday using the blackboard eats 30% off special! The ambience was nice and somewhat cozy. I loved the wood and warm color scheme, but I don't know if I'd exactly call it romantic even though the lights were pretty dim. I think it's because it was so loud inside. Surprisingly loud actually! But not too loud where you can't hear the person next to you. The food was overall delicious! The blackboard eats deal was for a pre-fixe 3-course meal, but we also got two other dishes on top of that to share. What we tried: Crab Deviled Eggs: amazing!! I just had to get it after reading all the rave reviews about it. It was my favorite dish of the night. Yum! I'm craving some right now! If you love crab and deviled eggs, you'll love this. I just wish it came with more of them. Ginger Carrot Soup: this was our first course of the meal. I didn't think too much of it. I like ginger but I don't really like carrots in general. I thought the soup was just okay. I would definitely not go out of my way to order it again. Pot Roast: this is their signature dish and it was our main course of the night. It came swimming in juices and caramelized onions and carrots. It was moist, soft, and overall, a pretty good pot roast. But it wasn't something amazing that blew me away. Or maybe my tastebuds aren't refined enough to know a good pot roast from a GREAT one. Duck Fried Rice: this was the surprise of the night. It tasted sweet and citrusy at the same time. I'm not used to fried rice tasting like that. It was very unique but I don't think I'd order it again. Other side dishes: the FRIES were bomb!! Soooo good! Perfect amount of crisp too. Mashed potatoes were standard. Steamed spinach was really bland. Pea tendrils were good, as recommended by our server. Dessert: Butterscotch Pudding. It was very buttery and tasted like it had salted caramel in it. Veryyyy sweet and overall yummy! Service was awesome here!! I really liked our waitress. She was very friendly, knowledgeable, and not snobby at all! Bonus points to Jar for remembering my request! They brought the dessert with a candle in it for my bf's birthday! I was actually surprised they remembered that I wrote that fact in when I made the reservation on Open Table because I never reminded them again afterwards! :) read more

Food was great. We had the crab deviled eggs and beats for appetizers. Beats were a little bland, the eggs were great. I had the lamb shank with purple yams and my fiancée had the Chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes. Both dishes were fantastic! Too full for dessert. The only complaint was there services. Started off great, but slowed way down by the end. Also when we needed to go boxes, he boxed ourselves. Given the cost and caliber of the restaurant, I would have thought they would box for us. If you saw season one of Top Chef Masters, you might remember Suzanne Tracht - the head chef of JAR! Jar's main entrance is right by the Valet, but because the wooden door was closed we weren't sure if it was the front or back door. We ended up walking around the perimeter of the restaurant before entering that little brown door. Once inside, we were greeted warmly and seated right away. The staff here have impeccable manners, everyone we encountered greeted us nicely. The ambiance is dark, romantic, and intimate. The restaurant isn't very large at all - it has a modern, rustic feel that I really liked. First of all, I just have to say they must train their staff WELL because all the waiters/waitresses knew the menu like the back of their hand. The waitress was telling us the specials... there were like 10, but she knew the details to each one, and answered all our questions with precision and ease. Starter: Half Dozen Oysters on the half shell ($16): small oysters topped with finely shredded red onions. Came with black pepper ponzu. I've never had oysters without lime and hot sauce, but the black pepper ponzu sauce that came with the oysters paired well with it. These oysters were sooo fresh! The ponzu sauce brought out the flavor instead of masking it like a hot sauce would have. Side: Mashed Potatoes ($8): best creamy mashed potatoes we have ever had. They must've used a lot of heavy cream, the taste was very evident, but it was SO good! Melt in your mouth potatoes... Entrees: Braised Ox-tail ($32): this was good, but man, you only get two chunks of oxtail! The portion size seemed TINY to me because oxtail is mostly bone. Jar's Signature Pot Roast ($29): carrots and caramelized onions over tender, juicy, melt-in-your mouth beef. The waitress wasn't kidding when she said braising is Suzanne Tracht's specialty. That's why we both opted for braised dishes. Can't go wrong with them. All in all a wonderful dining experience from beginning to end! read more
