I have been coming here for a few years when it was still Shinmori optometry. The doctors were wonderful and attentive. But in the past year, with the new ownership by VSP, the service has gone downhill. Each appointment is only 20min, which doesn't give enough time for a full examination. Instead, we are expected to schedule another follow up appointment to complete other parts of the checkup, which is a waste of time. Other tests like field test are skipped, and instead they use fingers to test vision. It is almost laughable. For the same amount of money that I am paying for an eye exam, why should I settle for less? The doctors Dr Kim, Dr Shinmori and Dr Nakano are still wonderful and caring, but their hands are tied. The management has become so bad that I plan to spend my hard earned money elsewhere. read more

I found this place through my insurance and was able to get a next day appt scheduled. It's located right in japantown so you need to find street parking and don't forget to pay the meter! Luckily I found parking right in front of the office. I saw Dr. Oda who was friendly and got straight to business. I haven't had my eyes dilated since I was a kid so I would've appreciate a bit more explanation on what would happen, what it'd feel like, how long it'd take to go away, etc. Other than that, the annual eye exam was around an hour with dilation + waiting. Loved my experience here! I was able to get an appointment with Shinmori Optometry within a week of calling and they were great about reminding me as the day got closer. When I arrived, the practice was clean and well organized, the staff was friendly, and there was virtually no wait time. I was seen by a very friendly doctor for an eye exam and then ordered my contact lenses, and the whole process was smooth and quick from beginning to end. Assuming the new ownership is the reason for...everything. I was last here in January 2024 and it was the same, great office I've been coming to since the 90s. Prompt, friendly, and accurate service. I got new glasses and an external referral (due to my insurance coverage) for other eye care services. I came back this month to get a new prescription put into the frames I bought in January. The process was all over the place. 1. I initially submitted my appointment request through the webiste as usual. I was called back, selected one of the offered appointment times, and was set. Then they called me 2 hours before my appointment to say my appointment had been scheduled while the office was closed for lunch and could I move my appointment? 2. The person who helped me couldn't keep any information I told her or gave her (on paper) organized. She saw my glasses were new from this year but them asked if my frames were less than a year old for warranty purposes. 3. She put my new information on a post-it note stuck to a copy of my prescription. I was then asked to pay for my new glasses but she just entered the dollar amount into their credit card machine and didn't give me a receipt or invoice. 4. Tomoko had to call me the next day to ask which prescription was supposed to go in my frames because the person who helped me didn't leave any information. (Tomoko is great! She's been there ages and knows what to do.) 5. I received a text and email on Thursday that my new glasses were ready. The text reads (in part): "If picking up glasses, please call us to schedule an appt!" I called them and was told I didn't need an appointment to pick up my glasses. I was out of town and asked if I could come by next week to get them and the person on the phone told me that was no problem. 6. I arrived at the office during normal business hours on Monday to discover that the office was closed through Wednesday for training. The person on the phone surely could have informed me when I called previously. 7. I went to get my glasses when they were re-opened and I had to ask to get my glasses case back, which I had left with my frames. This was treated as a surprise. I then asked for a receipt or invoice for the glasses and this was treated as a shocking request. I hope they change the office name to reflect their new identity. read more

After my optometrist left the bag area I was forced to find a new one. I was referred to Shinmori optometry by my friend and I soon realized I was missing out. Shinmori opt have the best eye docs, the best technology and the best care. They truly care about my eyes and needs. They are so thorough they leave no stone/ rock unturned. So I been a happy customer since 2019. Only trust my peepers to them. Side note: They care so much that they gave me 5 pairs of contacts for FREE to hold me off till my order of contacts came in, which where backlog due to Covid. Who does that anymore? I recently contacted the super kind staff at Shinmori Optometry about seeing my Mother who visiting me and was having horrible pain and vision loss following her cataract surgery months ago via another optometrist office. The scheduling staff went above and beyond to find my Mother an emergency appointment same day. My Mother was seen by Dr. Shinmori who gave her a thorough exam, provided two prescriptions to help alleviate the swelling and also forwarded me detailed notes to take back to my Mothers regular physician. I came to this place because of the good reviews I saw online but the experience I had was not good. The optician (front desk) seemed inattentive and even disrespectful to some customers. They seemed to be very reluctant to serve customers. The appointment pick-up doesn't seem to have any benefits, because no one dedicated to serving you. I was anxious to go to the optometrist's office during COVID-19, but the entire staff at Shinmori Optometry was prepared and kind. They had protocols in place to ensure everyone's safety in these hard times. You could see the effort the whole team made to make everyone in the office feel safe and sanitized. I was told that my optic nerve is damaged and referred to an ophthalmologist (a glaucoma specialist) .I did some research about her and found that she has quite low rating and most of patients were unhappy so I cancelled my appointment. I had 2 more checkups with another optometrist and ophthalmologist, there was no trace of nerve damage and glaucoma. In addition, I did a MRI to make sure that the optic nerve is ok. The misdiagnosis caused a lot of stress and cost good amount of money for me. read more

Shinmori has been my "Go To" Optometry for over five years. They have done dilation and taken pictures every year I have visited their office. This year they discovered a vessel leaking blood. They went with the extra effort to contact my doctor, who has been treating me for high blood pressure, that there are complications unless my pressure is reduced. read more

Shinmori Optometry has been my optometrist for several years now. I picked them after changing jobs and they were in my neighborhood. I cannot be happier with their service. They are an outstanding neighborhood optometrist. The staff is professional and several of the staff have been working there since I first visited them, so there is consistency with their service. My 14 year old son was complaining of recent occasional blurred vision. Since it was almost a year since his last vision check, the staff recommended that I schedule just the annual vision appointment to check it out, which was cost effective and efficient. After checking out his eyes through various machines, Dr. Shinmori identified blisters on his left eye lid and recommended allergy eye drops. Wow, would've never occurred to me. I had an eye exam for the third time at Shinmori Optometry and it was with Dr. Nagano and I am very pleased with the quality of service. Dr. Nagano provided prescriptions for my eyeglasses and explained very clearly what could have happened with prescriptions that changed from previously. Dr. Nagano also suggested I monitor my eyesight conditions and if any significant changes come visit the office and she would help refer my case to visit a specialist. I also enjoyed their collection of frames and hope the office could have more space for showing more collections. Last but not the least, the front desk office staff is all very friendly and helpful. I was looking for a new optometrist and found shinmori and decided to try them out. I was having trouble finding parking, since their clinic is located downtown. Parking meters everywhere btw!! I gave them a courtesy call to let them know I was gonna be a few minutes late. They called back and told me to reschedule instead, the doctor told the receptionist that they wouldn't have time to do my exam.... What a load of Bull!! so due to parking problems and being a few minutes late, I guess it's enough to have to reschedule my appointment. What a great reason to waste my time. They probably overbooked people, giving the excuse of having too many appointments and not enough staff or some shit. I haven't even stepped foot inside the building and got told to reschedule! I would not give this place a second chance if they can't be flexible enough to allow time for their patients to get to their offices. Im not gonna waste any more time with this place. read more

My family and I just visited this location for the first time last week. They gave us an appointment for all of us even with a short notice. My wife and I have 4 kids so to see us all back to back isn't an easy task but this office did it with a breeze. All the staff members were very professional and very kind to us. We genuinely felt welcomed unlike some other offices!! Dr.Kristen ODA & June our optician were so awesome. We actually had fun visiting the office. My two boys and wife ended up needing glasses and Dr.Kristen did a phenomenal job explaining the prescription they all needed. You can tell that Dr.Kristen cares and has a passion for what she does. June did a great job helping us calculate the cost for the glasses and helped us with our vision insurance. We definitely recommend this place. We will be a customer for life based on this visit. They promised three times in person and on the call everything is done correctly. Turns out they lied the whole time and my insurance is no longer active. Still don't admit it is their false. I'm so surprised I didn't write a review for Shinmori! I needed to get a set of contacts and it had been far too long since my last exam, enter in Shinmori. I really like the doc and she asked me if I knew that my eyes were shaped differently. I said yes I knew from putting makeup on, but she told me they were actually different inside too! Very interesting. I ended up paying a few dollars for the appointment with insurance just to get some samples of hydroclear contacts and later ended up emailing them again when I decided to go without glasses to an event. They were incredibly helpful and sent my numbers back immediately! We're too far away now to go back, but I had a really great experience here and would definitely recommend them if you're in the area! read more

I was looking for a nice new optometrist close to SJSU and this place is great!! The doctors and staff were all extremely nice & the place is well-kept and clean. For COVID they are only allowing one customer in at a time, so your appointment should be made at least a week in advance. This was also my first contact lens exam experience and it was as stress-free as it could've been. They didn't have to dilate my pupils as I'd heard from other places, gave me a 2-week trial pair that same day, and got my full year prescription the next week!
