I was a new patient to Dr. Weaver's a few months ago, regarding a chipped tooth and trying to get it repaired. The service I received wasn't bad but nothing stellar either, the tooth actually ended up getting chipped two more times, one which Dr. Weaver fixed again, and the other which was finally fixed by another dentist.
But this review really isn't based on that experience, more on the other services I received at this office. After my initial teeth issue, I scheduled a cleaning because it had been at least a few months since I had one. The cleaning itself wasn't spectacular, my teeth were clean afterwards, but not really that minty fresh, bright smile feeling you get after usually going to a dentist. When I was receiving the cleaning, the hygienist was telling me every little specific thing she was doing along the way, as if I were participating in an exam and had to pay dutiful attention. "Now I'm poking your teeth with this so I can do that, now I'm doing this so this will happen. Oh I see you have a lot of this, that's why I'm doing this now." Literally every single step of the process was being described in excruciating detail. I don't know about you, but usually when I go to the dentist, I like to zone out and try to focus on anything else besides my teeth getting worked on, but this hygienist didn't make that possible. The hygienist also was very dutiful about scolding me for not flossing. Yes, everyone could floss more, but I'm not a child, give it a rest.
That's just my personal take on the dental service received cleaning wise. But one thing that became really strange and concerning is when they said I needed a deeper cleaning for my gums. The way they presented this information to me was that if I didn't receive this deeper cleaning ASAP, my teeth would risk falling out in the near future. They presented it to me as if I had received a diagnosis for a fatal disease. This deeper cleaning would need to take place in two different sessions, but would be covered underneath my insurance. I even remember Dr. Weaver and the hygienist comically standing over my mouth, poking at my gums with their little scraper, saying things like "oh no, that isn't good."
This was very strange news, seeing as how I've been to the dentist all of my life fairly regularly, and not once has the issue of having a deeper gum cleaning come up. Luckily, I was visiting home in a couple of weeks and had the opportunity to see my dentist there to get a second opinion. When I called up Dr. Weaver's office to ask them to send them my charts, they didn't do if for a week despite regular calls every day asking if they had sent it. Finally when they did, they actually sent it to the wrong email address (although I very carefully provided them the correct one). When I did visit my other dentist for a cleaning (I had another one because I was dissatisfied with Dr. Weavers) they said that this DEEPLY IMPORTANT GUM CLEANING was not necessary at all. What had originally been reported as very deep pockets in my gums by Dr. Weaver were small to medium sized pockets by this other office, which could be taken care of with brushing, flossing and the like. Hearing the vast difference between Dr Weaver's original ruling vs. my other dentist, who is top notch and one of the highest rated in the city by patients for service and customer care, something definitely seemed fishy.
I couldn't help but wonder if Dr. Weaver's office was actually just scheduling me for unnecessary dental services just so they could bill my insurance provider as much as possible. Think about it: I go in, get a procedure done I don't really need but isn't on the surface that harmful, Dr. Weaver bills it and collects bank. No one technically loses, but Dr. Weaver definitely reaps the benefits. It seems like a silly notion, like this entire office is just trying to figure out how to pluck the most insurance money from each patient's pocket, but when I think about how uncooperative their office was in actually sending my info over to my other dentist, potentially over fear of losing my business, it only makes me wonder more if that's a possibility.
One random thing I noticed though about Dr. Weaver, she never says goodbye! You sit with the hygienist for most of the time, Dr. Weaver comes in, does her thing, and then gets up and leaves as if she's going to another room and about to come back but never actually does. You then sit there wondering "wait, is she coming back? Is it over? Do I have to wait for her or can I just go?" Weird stuff.
I would definitely not recommend going to this dentist. If you do have an issue with your teeth, they will treat you like you did something wrong and scold you instead of acting like a teammate who is there to help you fix it. Her practices and misdiagnosis seem very unethical, and the tools and procedures they use do not seem to be up to date.
