I've been a patient at Forever Smile since 2023, initially for Invisalign, and have always had…read moregreat experiences with Dr. Shelyan and the dental hygienists. Unfortunately, my most recent visit with the front office left me looking for a new dentist. I recently switched insurance and accidentally enrolled in a plan that Forever Smile doesn't accept. I apologized and acknowledged that it was my mistake, and said I would come back once I had insurance they accepted. The front office lady then told me it would be a $150 cancellation fee. As I was getting ready to pay the cancellation fee, she told me I could instead pay $180 out of pocket for the cleaning, which I agreed to. Once I got seated for my cleaning, the dental hygienist was getting ready to take my x-rays and I asked if that would cost extra since I'm paying out of pocket and I wanted the cheapest service. The hygienist checked with the front office and came back with a revised total of $145. I confirmed that amount, received my cleaning, paid $145, and left. As I was driving home, I received a text from the front office lady saying I had been charged the wrong amount and now owed an additional $35. I asked for an itemized receipt for both the $145 I paid and the new $180 total so I could understand the difference before paying. Instead, I was told they would only provide an itemized receipt after I paid the remaining balance. This did not sit well with me because, in our text conversation afterward, the front office lady said she had already removed certain services because she knew I wanted the cheapest option. However, when I was in the chair, the hygienist was preparing to take my x-rays until I specifically asked whether they would cost extra since I was paying out of pocket. That left me confused about what services had actually been included, what had been removed, and how the final amount had been determined. What bothered me most wasn't being asked to pay another $35. If there had been a genuine billing mistake, I would have paid it. What bothered me was being asked to pay more money while being refused an itemized receipt explaining why. Once I asked for the itemized receipts, it seemed the front office lady was no longer interested in pursuing the additional $35. I never received a response to my final message or any further follow-up regarding the additional balance. She also told me that no one other than her knew the office's fees. I found that unsettling and it further reduced my confidence in the billing process. As a customer, I don't think it's unreasonable to want to understand what I'm being charged for before making an additional payment. I also mentioned at the office that it would have been helpful if my insurance had been verified before my appointment since the office knew I had changed insurance and was returning because I had obtained new coverage. The front office lady replied that too many patients change insurance for them to verify everyone's coverage. While I understand they may not verify every patient's insurance in advance, it would have been a thoughtful gesture for a long-time customer in this specific circumstance. However, I realize it was my fault for getting the wrong insurance, which is why I was willing to accept the cancellation fee. Dr. Shelyan and the dental hygienists have always provided excellent care, and I appreciate the service they provided. My review is directed at the front office lady and how she handled the billing and customer service throughout this experience. The lack of transparency and communication ultimately caused me to lose confidence in the practice and look elsewhere for future dental care. I genuinely hope they improve this aspect of their business so it reflects the same level of care and professionalism that Dr. Shelyan and the dental hygienists provide.

Writing My First One-Star Review -- And It's Well Deserved…read moreThis is my first one-star review ever, but it is well deserved. I went to this dentist because they accept my HMO insurance. I was experiencing tooth pain and thought I might need a filling, a crown, or perhaps, at worst, a root canal. I understand that sometimes these procedures are necessary. After taking some X-rays, the dentist came in and told me that I had serious problems. She then asked when I had last seen a dentist. I told her April. (The only reason I stopped going to my previous dentist was that they no longer accepted my insurance.) Without even examining my teeth--she never once asked me to open my mouth--she presented me with two options: an extraction or another procedure. I felt extremely pressured. Although I was somewhat confused, I decided to go with the procedure she recommended. She then sent me to speak with the billing person. After my HMO coverage was applied, my out-of-pocket cost was still over $1,000. Keep in mind, she had also indicated that additional steps would be necessary (AKA more bills) and that I needed extensive work on my other teeth (AKA even more bills). I asked for an itemized bill, which they had not voluntarily provided. I stepped outside and researched some of the charges. I discovered that the most expensive item, which was not covered by my insurance, was something I could not undergo for personal reasons. After researching it, I also learned that it was not necessarily required for the procedure itself but primarily helped speed up the healing process. I returned to the office and explained that I could not undergo that particular part of the treatment. I asked whether they could proceed without it. The billing manager--not the dentist--told me, "No, we can't do it." The dentist never came out to explain why, discuss alternatives, or even offer to call me later. Instead, they handed me a referral to a clinic that would extract my tooth without that additional procedure. Needless to say, I discarded the referral. They also made sure to retrieve the copy of the itemized bill they had given me. In hindsight, I should have kept it. Throughout this entire process, I NEVER ONCE OPENED MY MOUTH FOR AN EXAMINATION. Absolutely crazy! I decided to return to my previous dentist and pay out of pocket. He took X-rays, actually examined my teeth, and determined that I had a cavity and needed a crown. He explained that he could not know for certain whether a root canal would be necessary until he drilled down and assessed the extent of the damage. After drilling, he determined that no root canal was needed. He also explained that if I ever needed a root canal in the future--which he estimated had less than a 5% chance of happening--the existing crown could be preserved, so I would not have to pay for another one. His price was fair, and I gladly paid out of pocket. What a difference between the two experiences! I went to the first dental office expecting professional care and an honest assessment. Instead, I was presented with expensive treatment options without even receiving a basic examination. I'm extremely glad I sought another opinion. Had I simply followed the first dentist's recommendation, I might have lost a tooth that my previous dentist was able to save. This experience is exactly why second opinions are so important, especially when a dentist recommends an extraction or other costly procedures.

Major updates since 2012: -full invisalign -2 veneers for my front two teeth -partial porcelain crown Iveta went above and beyond for each of these major services. She got me fair prices with basically designer veneers (because are you really going to get middle of the pack veneers for your TWO FRONT TEETH? - yeah no) and handled it every time I had an issue with my temps. Literally I must be cursed because A. someone chipped my front tooth after slamming me in the face with a glass at a dark.. place.. (uh yeah clubbing) and B. every time I left LA, the temp FREAKING FELL OFF. Yes no this is an act of the universe because I could do anything I wanted in LA (hard sandwiches, basically everything they warned me not to do) but the minute I land in any other city, the temp freaking falls off. I went to emergency dentists in other cities to put it in and it literally fell off immediately. Iveta and team went above and beyond (literally cramming me in last second when I land back in LA) and every time, they really fixed it (had to redo BOTH temps in different settings). FYI the temps were also gorgeous, couldn't even tell they weren't the real deal. The process took a little longer because they made sure my finals were PERFECT and not just ok. Literally sent them back to the lab because he didn't think it was up to his standards. My invisalign experience was the same. Iveta analyzed my stuff repeatedly to make sure it was up to her standards. If you're going to get anything major (or minor), come here. They're detail oriented, open late and honestly have a great aesthetic eye.
