I would give this restaurant no stars if I could. To start off, my boyfriend and I chose this place for Valentine's Day because they had a bunch of options. Then they changed the menu to be a set on for Vday, which is fine. However, we chose them because I have a seafood allergy and they had the most non seafood options. Special menu comes out. Majority seafood. Barely any allergy friendly options. Then while we're there, people who were sat after us were helped before us and it took our waitress a bit to finally get to us. Then all the tables around us received bread. We did not. My boyfriend had to ask for it. Both of us order the New York steak however they ran out of the New York steak and offered us Filet. Yes we'll take that better cut but why don't you have enough for your specialized menu day. Then, they ran out of the dessert we wanted, resulting in us getting something else. How are you going to run out when you have a set menu? Our waitress was nice enough when she helped us, but we often had another waitress bringing us stuff and checking on us. My final issue was the payment. I tipped what I thought the service deserved. Come to check my card statement and they went ahead and gave themselves a very nice tip. Double what I had tipped. However their menu said gratuity was not included in their set menu price. Therefore it was my choice what to tip. I will be disputing this charge and contacting the restaurant. This is unacceptable and I would not recommend dining with this establishment. read more

Introduction: A friend raved to me about this place and since I'm in the neighborhood, I decide to have my dinner here tonight. Food: Chicken Piccata: Two thinly sliced, breaded, and herbed chicken that's stacked on top of one another. It is flavorful and very tender. The sauce is light and carries notes of lemon, garlic, and butter. Eating the chicken with the sauce makes it a delightful culinary experience. The fettucini is al-dente in texture. It is buttery, wholesome, and filling. Price: Reasonable Service: The staffs are courteous and accommodating. Are you looking for a great dining experience in Santa Barbara? I asked the same question and a friend of mine simply said, "Jane." Located on State Street on the edge of downtown SB, it's somewhat easy to miss thanks to the many outdoor dining options loaded up on the sidewalks. We had made a reservation because seating is limited due to COVID so I'd recommend those for any restaurant in downtown SB. We were quickly seated, given menus and complimentary bread. My friend is a regular (No, really. All the staff knew his name lol) and he said the linguine with clams was the move. It was unbelievable. Perfectly cooked noodles in a white wine & butter sauce with loads of in-shell clams. We went to Jane two days later and I got the penne bolognese and it was good, but not as good as the linguine. What I'm saying is, get the linguine! Service was excellent. We got extra bread whenever we asked (to sop up the linguine sauce) and my water glass was never empty. They observed COVID protocols with the staff wearing masks and sanitizing tables in between diners. There are a lot of dining options in downtown Santa Barbara so that we ate twice in three nights at Jane says how impressive it is. Floor manager was attentive that we had a show to catch so she kept eye on the as the restaurant was busy. Food was decent. I specifically asked that my salmon was to be slightly undercooked. I've never been much of a fan of filet mignon and my co-worker had been urging me to try the dish here at Jane; so on this special day I did. The ambience for my lovely lady's birthday dinner after a night painting a few doors down was perfect, and we stopped by on a calm night with plenty of seating available. We of course got the best seat in the house, right on the balcony. Let me tell you; the filet mignon was out of this world. I knew it when I made the first cut with the knife. SO TENDER! And once that morsel went into my mouth; SO SAVORY! It has definitely made me reframe my experience with this cut of meat. My lady got the sea bass and that was fantastic too! To top it off - our bill wasn't a wallet buster for 2 entrees and an appetizer ($90), especially for the quality we experienced. Will definitely be back; hungry for more. read more

We picked Jane for my 30th birthday dinner after careful consideration since the reviews were so good. They were wrong. It's located on State Street, which was great, and the building is very cute. There's not a lot of outdoor seating but indoor is very unique as there second floor open concept. The food was mediocre. Nothing was spectacular but nothing was bad. I got the filet mignon which was cooked perfectly to temp. My fiancé got the lamb which was also fine. We also got a few appetizers and drinks. They do not have cocktails so keep that in mind. Again, all fair but nothing to write home about. The biggest issue was the service. I got up to grab the water pitcher to refill my own water and we were left alone for long periods of time. The most irritating thing was that all of the entrees came out except one. It took another 15 minutes. And the server said and did nothing to address this. Jane is overpriced for what it is. If you want a nice dinner, go elsewhere. read more

My wife and I first dined at Jane back in Nov. 2021. We both loved the food and ambience so much that we ended up having our wedding reception there last month (March 2022). We reached out to the event coordinator, Meagan, who helped us reserve the upstairs mezzanine and balcony area for our big day. She was very responsive to emails, ensured out needs were met and made the whole process very seamless. She also provided us a recommendation for a local florist, Alicia, who did a fantastic job with the flower arrangements and tablet setup. The restaurant was perfect for hosting our small, intimate wedding reception. The food at Jane was very delicious and all of our guest had a great time dining at Jane. The service was excellent. The staff there was very accommodating and ensure all of our needs were fulfilled. We went with the $70 preset dinner menu with some minor alterations to a couple menu items. All the food came our cooked to perfection. They are also known for their coconut chiffon cake and just so happened it was also our wedding cake...delicious!!! We highly recommend dining at Jane for their food, friendly staff, great service and ambience. read more

Came here with a party of 10 for my mom's bachelorette dinner. They sat us immediately. Restaurant wasn't too crowded, it was a Saturday night. The service was good. The waiters were attentive and helpful. All of the food was delicious. Between the group, we tried a good portion of thee u and everyone e liked their dishes. Over the last decade or so, first dined at Jane SB then at the Cafe when in Montecito. Dinner here two nights ago of the fish specials was spectacular. Wines perfectly paired with the plates! We had some out-of-town guests and decided to come to the downtown location, despite preferring the one in Goleta. We were seated promptly. Water arrived quickly and the Firestone onion rings were delicious. Then things got weird and went downhill from there. Our food came about 50 minutes after being seated and the drinks were ordered at the same time as the food came 5-10 minutes before that. Two specials featured orecchiette pasta. One was a beef bourguignon with the pasta. What arrived was not beef bourguignon. First, it came with the same fettuccini that comes with many of their mains. When I pointed this out, the server was very apologetic and offered to remake it with the orichiette. I declined since beef bourguignon traditionally is not served with any pasta whatsoever (don't confuse it with stroganoff, which is served with egg noodles). What's strange is the explanation from the kitchen - it wasn't that they made a mistake cooking the dish, but in fact ALL the specials menus were incorrect. This is such a strange explanation. The restaurant clearly got some orecchiette in stock (again, two out of 4 specials featured the pasta) and instead of just making the dish with orecchiette, they insisted on putting fettuccini. Again, neither are traditional. It shouldn't have surprised me that the beef bourguignon was not in fact beef bourguignon. It was a tomato bolognese sauce with chunks of chewy, stringy, and dry protein. It didn't resemble slow-braised beef at all. Here's a description of beef bourguignon: "a stew of meat slowly simmered in hearty red wine along with pearl onions, mushrooms and crisp, cubed bacon." What was served was a mediocre tomato ground meat sauce with some cubes of protein (honestly tasted like pork) thrown in. No pearl onions, no lardons or bacon. Water refills and plate clearing were attentive, as well as a bread refill. The desserts came quickly and were delicious. The inside, as always, is extremely loud. Due to the layout of the restaurant and the wooden floors, everyone is yelling to be heard. It's honestly a terrible restaurant to go to if you actually enjoy the company you are with. Do yourself a favor and go to the Goleta location instead, where the food is much more consistent and the specials actually taste good. But to play it safe, honestly, stick to their tried and true menu items like the chicken picatta, salad bowls, or (extremely safe and pedestrian but hard to screw up) pastas. And definitely get the coconut chiffon cake for dessert. read more

Well you know when the place is not even 1/2 full on a Saturday nite and you wonder what to expect before you open the door? Well that's what happened yesterday. Underseasoned food and a server who tried her best to put on a brave face, but struggled to believe what she was told to say. Kale salad looked like it was thrown together by a child. They removed my favorite salad dish so I was redirected to the Kale salad. But the Kale salad looked like it was thrown together by a child. Both fish specials underseasoned. The texture of the coconut cake was weird like some of it solidified not in a good way. Nothing awful, but nothing that certainly warranted a return trip. Please hire a new and competent pastry chef. Favorite restaurant in SB. The filet mignon (you can request for lunch even if not on menu) has the the best sauce that makes it the best steak experience (no need for fancy prime steak houses). Always my go to. (Opal next door also has a great filet with some wine sauce when tried years ago. Just the mushroom cream gravy like sauce at Jane is too addicting so always end up at Jane...) But then finally tried their famous chicken picatta some 2 years ago and oh boy... been dreaming of it since even more than the filet. Missed the Jane lunch times the past 2 trips, but came prepared this time and finally got to eat it again. Chicken was a bit chewy this time and the capers or sauce was not quite as explosive as 2 years ago, but don't get me wrong it was fantastic. Cleared my plate clean and wife and baby did same to her order (it was that memorable, we both had to order our own this time instead of the filet & chicken like last time), lol. Quantities are a bit lacking (small filet or 2 small/thin chicken breasts), but the flavors make up for it I guess. And daytrips to SB always involves being overstuffed all day anyway, so it works out just fine. Seems like they make their own bread and sauces for their burgers, maybe I need to try one of those next time. But how can I ever try if the filet and chicken piccata are just too good to skip? After a mother's day luncheon previous day, and where we didn't have dinner that night,we wanted great food but not in quantity. We were not disappointed. We ordered pork loin chop and rack of lamb. Sauce for meats was delightful.Both yummy with terrific scalloped potatoes ( best ever) and a fresh vegetable of green snap peas with yellow squash. So fresh. We accompanied it with a Zoto red wine and were so satisfied. Christian, our server was excellent. We will be back next time for the coconut cake. read more

It's been a while since I've been to Jane...a lot of years. With the way restaurants can come and go in SB, i am glad they are still here. It says a lot! I was a guest so hesitate to be critical but here goes. Everything was great. Filet cooked to perfection. Tender sea bass. Beautiful veggies. Delicious potatoes. One thought...I wonder if the pineapple salsa that topped my fish could've been lightly browned but not charred black? Pretty nasty. And clearly over done...just next time don't top beautiful sea bass with black pineapple. As I said, all else was delicious. read more

Visited Jane on a day trip with my beautiful wife. Located in Santa Barbara's main thoroughfare, this is a place worth the visit. We came on a weekday when they open at 5. We asked to be seated on the Juliette balcony overlooking the street and other restaurants. There are three tables on the narrow balcony setup for couples. Ambiance is great with music playing and candles on table. They have gas heaters they can turn on when it gets chilly. We had the filet mignon, chicken piccata, and Calamari. Total bill was 85 dollars and we had plenty of leftovers. It can get quite busy here we're told. Definitely coming back again to try some of their other items on the menu. read more

Fantastic dining experience! Had eaten here a few times when they opened, but hadn't been in a few years. This time it was with my wife (sans kids) last Saturday on a rare date night. The host seated us immediately for our 6:30pm reservation on the upstairs balcony overlooking State St. It was indeed chilly, but we were dressed for it and they had adequate heating; honestly the best seat in the house. Inside is spacious but cozy and reminiscent of a Spanish ranch house. I can only describe the menu as "California comfort gourmet," simple, but diverse and with something for everyone. From fancy burgers and fried chicken, to lamb chops, a filet, fish stew, etc. and a few specials, all reasonably priced. We started with a couple of kir royales and flatbread with spreads. For entrees, my wife had chicken with chili and cream sauce, and I had the duck breast with cranberry and port reduction. Food came out hot and on warm plates (yay!). Everything was delicious, tender and flavorful with a nice bottle of local pinot. The potato gratin and veggie medley were more than sides slapped on a plate, they really stood on their own. Despite being out of the main dining area, service was prompt and attentive throughout, with good adherence to COVID protocols. Robert, our server, epitomized perfect service, which is unfortunately such a rarity in Santa Barbara. Timing was spot on, friendly, courteous and attentive, but never felt rushed. We finished our delightful dinner with coconut cake (so moist - my favorite since the Montecito Café days), and a toffee sundae. Jane does things simply, but does it top notch. Another trip to Restaurant Jane for seafood stew and coconut cake and another delightful experience. I've noticed that many of my favorite local fine restaurants have slipped a bit since the plague but not Jane, the seafood stew remains spectacular (I carefully left enough of all the delights to make an encore), and the coconut cake was as heavenly as always(no leftover here I'm not that disciplined). This place is truly amazing and very moderately priced. DON'T pass it by if you like great food in a welcoming environment. read more

Jane is also the name of my favorite cafe in San Francisco. It's a small business, loved by locals and has something for everyone. It evokes warm feelings in my belly: a welcoming vibe that envelops me in her arms after a long day. Santa Barbara's own is very similar to my Jane in SF. Although the big difference here is, it's a full fledged restaurant with a varied enough menu to satisfy the pickiest of eaters. I love patronizing restaurants that has a neighborhood feel and despite being smack dab on center of the action in busy State st., Jane manages that with their California influenced cuisine and amiable service. The food? all worthy! The Firestone onion rings with balsamic glaze is a superb opener with its addicting crunchiness. The kale salad with golden raisins, sliced almonds and salty feta cheese, came split without us asking. The lamb chops were expertly prepared and accompanied with spring vegetables. My duck breast was perfectly cooked at medium rare and served with an abundant blood orange-cherry demi-glaze. Unreal! Mom's petrale sole was a delicate preparation with a lemon-herb sauce and husband did NOT share his juicy burger. (ok, I kid, I got a 'pity' bite!) I really like that Jane makes their own sesame buns AND mayo! We cheered for the wallet friendly prices and generous portions: two things that aren't too common nowadays in SF. We left with a feeling of happiness -- maybe credited to the glasses of white sangria and beer -- but with an excellent meal such as this, I have no doubt we will be back for more. A friend and I were driving down from the Bay Area to Los Angeles and in need of a break. After googling places to eat, we settled on Jane and this was a great decision. We were seated immediately and out server (who was also training a new employee) was just lovely. Very courteous and informative, even told of some of the history of the restaurant. We ordered the grill flatbread starter and the spreads were delicious, particularly the eggplant pate, and I'm not a fan of eggplant. The main dishes were also very good, I had the grilled chicken with chile cream sauce which I liked so much I wish I had the recipe for that sauce. My friend, who usually doesn't have a big appetite, finished her Rocket Burger. The creme brulee was the perfect finish to our meal. All told we were very happy with our experience at jane. The room is lovely, the service excellent, and the food was delicious. It will definitely be on the list of places to visit again whenever I'm in Santa Barbara. read more

It was good, but was cold--would have been nice warmed up. The filet mignon was delicious and perfectly cooked. It came with a side of bok choy and scalloped potatoes. The bok choy was good, but I wish there was more--there was only 2 of them. The scalloped potatoes were underseasoned but okay after I added salt/pepper. We had made the mistake of making a reservation at OPAL before the theater, which was moved then cancelled by them, which turned out to be a great thing. We walked down to JANE, who found us a great table upstairs. The food was incredible, and the service was even better. Ironically, the prices were much more reasonable than at Opal!!! Don't waste your time or money at Opal, just skip the hassle and make your dinner reservations at JANE!! read more
