Damien was truly the star of the show. He was so knowledgeable and service was 12/10. JAN was an amazing experience and a must do in Nice. Everything was so thoughtful and beautifully presented. Would never think South African cuisine would be so tasty and the flavors were so unique. We got the wine pairing and signature menu and although cost $$$ it was worth every penny !!

Incredible experience in JAN. Not just culinary, but an overall great experience. The food and service was impeccable as expected for a Micheline Star rated restaurant, however they truly go above and beyond with the little details. Starting with simple things like having Baccarat glassware, and finishing the night with literally crossing the street to go to a cheese room. Needless to say, a must visit if you are ever in Nice.

JAN gives one the opportunity to experience both French and South African influenced dishes. This is a great romantic atmosphere for those needing a venue like this, and the service matched very well throughout the experience. With being just off the Mediterranean most dishes are influenced by the sea which gave different tastes to enjoy. The South African influence was most appreciated as I had not experienced combinations like this before. What might be the star of the show is Maria, the cheese room you leave JAN to enjoy across the streets. There is cheese - lots of it - and no choice is wrong. JAN sets itself apart with this feature and provides a great break in the meal. JAN is worth the experience. It is on the higher end of the 1 star Michelin range but I left more than satisfied.

One of the best culinary experiences I've ever had. from the moment you walk in and see the space, you can tell this will be a special experience. The team was very flexible when we asked to shift our reservation by 30 minutes, the day before. We were welcomed by their lovely staff and the team. Everyone was so lovely and happily answered questions about the dishes and the restaurant . The time across the street at Maria was really a beautiful interlude and display. I could not believe that all the fruits on the table were real, and selected at the market nearby. I had a great seat, which allowed me a view of the kitchen, and I could not believe Jan was there himself. I was able to try two other one star Michelin restaurants while in Nice, and this place really blew both out of the water.

The food is South African and very unique but also very nice. A very different experience. The restaurant is cozy and well decorated. The cheese course is served across the street at your leisure and it's an amazing experience. The servers are very attentive and helpful. I loved the bobotie and tried to recreate it at home. Lovely dish well presented.

Celebrating our 9 yr anniversary at Jan could not have been a better choice. Confirming ahead of time they could accommodate a vegetarian tasting menu, we were treated to beauty for the eyes and stomach. Each dish was packed with flavor and ingenuity. Focusing on South African flavors with a French twist, we enjoyed mushrooms, lentils, coconut, curry and an abundance of vegetables The presentation of their Niçoise salad was amazing! We had a special vegetarian version that looked just like the meaty version being served at other tables. We received a wreath of veggies then a tall glass with a small lettuce and tomato floret. They then pour a smoky tomato broth over the floret to heat up the salad and then use these long tongs to place the floret into the wreath so we then get the delicious salad and tomato broth to drink.....and let's not forget the cheese room We're walked across the street to this room that has specially been setup with an entire cheese table of 20+ different cheeses, nuts, fruits, honey, jams, breads and cakes to pair. The setup was amazing and elegant and the cheeses were phenomenal I could definitely go on here but I will end with the super nice staff, very attentive service and we were presented with a signed Jan cookbook and morning biscuits to remember our visit. Best anniversary dinner! Total: 2 people 10 courses 1 champagne: 1 bottle 3.5 hours 460€ including tip

The food was very good overall. As one of our courses, we were escorted across the street to a cheese shop. It was like a cheese buffet paired with different drinks/other foods. You can easily get full from this course depending how much cheese you eat. We got a free cookbook from the restaurant. Great experience

Absolutely loved the meal and experience here, we stopped in our last night in Nice and had an amazing meal. Service is very friendly and warm. As expected with a starred restaurant, glasses never go empty, courses are explained in detail and course timing here was perfect. Even the small details were great - the JAN seltzer water was delicious, and our aperitifs came with ice cubes with fruit frozen in them to compliment our specific drinks. We reserved the first seating, which unfortunately means we could not order the full tasting menu, but we didn't miss much and still left very full and happy. There was not a bad course for our meal, and in fact it was hard choosing a favorite. The meal started off strong with the amuse, the highlight of which was a truffle and pear tartlet with white truffle. Such a memorable single bite that excites you for what is to come. The next dish was a beautiful scallop and cucumber dish, rice and coconut foam topped with caviar. Beautiful flavors and textures throughout. Then came the frozen apple, cheese and warm veloute. Temperatures played off each other to make a wonderfully composed dish. The entree was a beef loin with a number of components on the dish - all were great including the jus. 1000% recommend the cheese course, it is unlike any other I've experienced. You walk across the street to the cheese room and create your own personalized board from about 15 different cheeses and accoutrements. And the dessert and Mignardises were also very strong and ended the meal on a high note. Loved our experience at JAN and would highly recommend this meal to anyone. A very strong meal that exceeds some experiences we've had for a fraction of the price.

I recently attended a birthday celebration at JAN, and was positively blow away by the overall quality of this restaurant! The food and wine are outstanding and the service is impeccable. We selected their five course-tasting menu with wine parings, and the meal was nothing short of phenomenal from beginning to end! The staff provided many special touches throughout the meal, and each course was a completely unique and delicious experience! Some of my favorites from the meal were the house-made bread and butter, the guinea fowl, and the mackerel, but everything was simply flawless; there were no dishes that weren't amazing :-) Bottom line: This is a truly special and amazing venue; I highly recommend it, and look forward to returning.

Food and ambiance- 5/5: After spending 2 weeks in France, Nice was the last stop of our trip. I wanted to have a good meal before we started to head home, so I did some research and decided on JAN. I was excited that they offered lunch (2 courses for 45 euros and 3 courses for 57 euros) and quickly made a reservation. While in Dijon, we had a more classic French meal at a Michelin restaurant, so I thought it would be fun to try something different in Nice. JAN describes their cuisine as modern French inspired by South-African flavors. If you are staying in Nice near the Promenade des Anglais area, note that JAN is not super close. It took about 30 minutes to walk there from our hotel, which was the Palais de la Mediterannee. The surrounding area is a little quiet and if you don't look closely for the JAN sign, you may miss it. The interior of the restaurant is very nice without feeling too formal. We were one of the first parties to arrive for lunch, but by the time we finished the place was full. There was a mix of couples, families, and larger parties, and a number of them were foreigners (we heard a lot of English). All of the food was beautifully plated, outstanding quality, and delicious. While it might seem funny, I really enjoyed the bread served with nori and dashi butter. The risotto and sea bass were good but less memorable. For dessert, we had a rhubarb tart. It was light and perfect for the hot July weather. Service- 4/5: Service was polite and attentive, as to be expected for a restaurant like JAN. One thing that I observed was that Jan Hendrik came to greet many of the customers. During our 1.5 hour lunch, he spoke to a gentleman dining by himself, a couple, and a few other parties. He did not, however, greet our party or the two other parties that were Asian. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but it did make me feel less satisfied with the service.

I must agree with other reviews that restaurant JAN deserves at least two Michelin stars to say the least. If you're in Nice, this is a must-do and you won't regret splurging here. I've dined at a lot of Michelin restaurants around the world and I will say that our experience at JAN is an absolute perfect 10. From the Amuse-bouche to the last course dessert, every dish was prepared with the utmost care and quality. We had the Cristal menu since we wanted to have an earlier dinner but if I could do it again, I would definitely go all out for the Diamant menu. Our dinner at JAN was undeniably the highlight of our honeymoon trip in South of France. Thank you JAN, for giving us the meal of a lifetime!

KenScale: 8.5/10 "Wow, what in the world is this??" My wife Jun exclaimed in the middle of our meal at Jan, a fine-dining modern French restaurant in Nice, France. She was pointing at the banana butter where you can extract banana-flavored butter from the blackened peel. It was not only clever (Jun kept asking the server who this was possibly made, and the server gave some fairly generic answer, "You just need to put butter into the emptied out banana!") but so delicious that Jun, who normally doesn't eat more than one piece of bread, ordered another one just to have more of this butter. Besides this revelation with banana butter, Jan, which is led by a South African chef Jan Hendrick, had plenty more to surprise us during our meal when we were in Nice as part of our honeymoon/summer vacation. The food at the restaurant had just the right degree of ingenuity to bring the French cuisine forward in a way that provides a ton of satisfaction without being overwhelmed by gimmicks. Jan doesn't offer any a la carte options; there are only two tasting course menus. Jun and I opted for the shorter "Menu Marche." Even before the meal starts, you get a bunch of freebie amuse bouche pieces, including a beetroot wrap with shrimp paste inside that is hidden in a rose petal. Despite the potential for French food to become too rich and overpowering over the course of meal, I was very impressed with the way each food kept its balance of flavor very well, starting with the first course consisting of a risotto-like dish with white asparagus, morels and 24-month matured Comte cheese that may look too creamy at first sight but turned out to be not too heavy and had nice textural balance. A combination of garden peas, scallops and mussels that followed was another refined dish that I very much enjoyed, a harmonious marriage between the garden and the sea. White sea bass, crab, zucchini and melon meringue was also beautifully prepared, and was accompanied by rooibos tea to add a nice aroma to the dish. For the meat dishes, we were able to choose between beef and duck (I went for the beef, and Jun for the duck). Both meats displayed juicy, tender texture and the seasoning was also on point, but what really stole the show was a side of bobotie (a traditional South African dish of spiced minced meat, from the chef's South African root). Its spiced curry flavor was not only delicious on its own but somehow worked seamlessly with the meats as well as a perfect sidekick. Next time Jun and I have an opportunity to visit South Africa, we will certainly seek out this dish. For dessert, a dish displaying the flavors of strawberry, rhubarb and black and pink pepper looked simple yet had a nice complexity to the flavor. Jan is one of the hottest dining destinations in Nice and it is a relatively small restaurant, so I highly making a reservation in advance. The minimalistic dining room gave a Gothic feel to the overall atmosphere that seems to project discipline and quiet confidence of the kitchen. It certainly is a great restaurant for a date night when you are in Nice. There is an extensive wine list from all over France; we decided to go local and ordered a bottle of red bandol from the Provence area that turned out to be quite well-structured to our liking. When we took a taxi from our hotel room to Jan, our taxi driver said Jan is a very special place to dine in Nice and a class on its own. We didn't go to enough restaurants in Nice to find out if it is the best restaurant in a popular beach city with plenty of dining options, but if you are in Nice, it is a place not to be missed if you are looking to have an upscale dining experience with a high degree of sophistication to cooking modern French dishes.

The restaurant has a humble exterior (largely blocked by gelato customers), but once you descend the stairs into the dining area you are in a sheek, romantic, cellar. Intimately small but comfortable. The walls are lined with stone and endless wine bottles. The starters were all quite good. We had the snails, squid, and cheese plait. As a bonus, my waitress recommended an excellent wine to pair with the squid. It was spot on. My group shared the beef and tartafelle (forgive my spelling). The beef was succulent, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I had no idea what to expect with the second dish but it was delicious and I would certainly order again. The prior night, I had the bakes camembert when eating solo. The dish is exactly as described. It's tasty, but I'd recommend it for a group since eating an entire block of melted cheese solo is challenging. Last but not least, the wait staff were wonderful! We really enjoyed chatting with our 2 waitresses, who went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and our election of drinks. As a tourist, you really hope to stumble on a gem like this were the locals charm you and really guide your dining experience. If ever back in Nice, i'll certainly go again!

This was our favorite meal of our trip to Nice!…read more Warning: Reservations are hard to come by we dropped by and only reservations available were for 9pm two nights later. We took it. The place is super relaxed. 5 maybe 6 tables which made the difficulty of reservations more understandable. Prix fix menu - 4 appetizers to choose from, 4 entrees and 4 desserts. We were there with somewhat of a limited diet, but the options were awesome. We got a cauliflower appetizer and an artichoke one. Both were excellent. We all had the cod for dinner also delicious - served in a bath of traditional fish soup and with potatoes. The dessert was also excellent - we got the goat cheese in olive oil and garlic, the cream cheese with blueberry compote, lemon cheesecake and cinnamon "tiramisu". Every bite was full of flavor and such cool takes on the food. Now the intangibles - we arrived for our 9pm reservation, restaurant closes at 9:30 and we probably didn't walk out until 11:15 and there was still another table of 8 people dining. The host/waiter, Sebastian, was awesome. So friendly and we at no point felt rushed. In fact the opposite. When our daughter was slow in finishing her meal he joked with her instead of hurrying us along. Once we finished our main dish, he casually brought us our dessert and because we didn't order his favorite (we didn't know) he brought us out an extra to enjoy. We felt a little bad so somewhat accelerated the dessert phase so we could square up and leave. Instead he was unhurried, he casually cleared our table and chatted with us for a bit. It took us another 15 minutes before we finally said could we get the bill. He brought it to us another 5-7 minutes later. We had a great experience and one of our best meals in France, if not the best.
