Items at the White Barn Store that are NOT on the CSA list: raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cantelope, corn, beans, etc. etc. 15 weeks in the CSA so it is about $43 a week if you do the CSA. You can choose only 8 items on a list if you do the CSA. Only 8. As a sample, one item has been: one zucchini, one yellow squash, one garlic clove, 3 beets, one raddhicio, one cabbage, etc. Given the $43 a week CSA price, then each item is about $5.25. So, if you do the CSA you are paying $5.25 for ONE zucchini, $5.25 for one garlic clove, $5.25 for 3 beets, $5.25 for a green cabbage. I have done CSAs for over a decade and the idea used to be that a person will "invest" in the farm up front and it it is a good year then there is a bounty of veggies, if it is a bad year you help the farmer by ensuring they have a set fund to work from. This has not been a bad year. Sadly, this farm does not allow the CSA investor to share in the harvest. Instead we pay over $5 for a single zucchini or garlic clove while we see other shoppers who didn't do the CSA be able to pay less. If you joined this CSA and are disappointed, please don't give up on CSAs. There are much better ones out there that respect the CSA investor.

Tree Berry Farm is near my in-laws, so it was a quick trip down the road. Thankfully, parking is in a grass lot off the main road, and you aren't expect to play Frogger with fast-moving cars on RR 123. There's lots of signage showing you where to park, where to pick up a bucket, and which sections are open for picking. Even at the height of blueberry picking, with lots of families around, there was still plenty of space to spread out, and lots of blueberries to go around! Jamie and I picked for about 15-20 minutes. If you're going to be there longer (i.e., if you have small kids), bring sunscreen and water! You pay at the same place you pick up (and return) your bucket. At $4 a pound, it can't be beat! We got about 2 pints worth of blueberries for that price. And the wonderful thing is, the flavor is far superior to that of the produce department at your local grocery store. They lasted a long time, too! For tourists and locals alike, blueberry picking is a must, and I can't recommend any place other than Tree Berry on the South Shore. It's the most organized and has the best blueberries anywhere!

Knowing the good quality of their summer produce, etc., we were delighted to see that Cervelli's…read morewas selling pies for Thanksgiving this year. But as it turned out, if the summer stuff scored an A. the pies scored a big, fat F! Those three pies almost ruined what had, until that point, been a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. The pies weren't even baked all the way through, to the point that the bottom crust were still raw! There was hardly any fruit in the fruit pies, and the crusts of all three pies was so dry and disgusting that the slices of pie turned out to be more like tablespoons of pie. Disappointing doesn't even come close to how we all felt about the experience we lived through . . . all because three pies -- blueberry, apple, and pumpkin -- were so dreadfully bad. I will have to admit that when I saw their advertising sign on the front street that read that they were "taking orders" for Thanksgiving pies, I expected homemade pies. Instead, the pies were mass-produced off-site, definitely from a distance away judging from the phone number on the boxes, and from the fact that they looked old when we opened the boxes. We will be careful of going to Cervelli's for anything any more, especially pies, other edible things, and anything holiday-related! Be careful because what happened to us, that the word Cervelli;s no longer holds the same good feelings or confidence in quality for us, could happen to you!
