In fact, it makes you angry. thats how i feel and have been feeling ever since i got braces from this despicable "dentist". hes so bad he should be stripped of his license than again i dont think he even has one because who would give him one with the way he does things (his skills his technique his MENTALITY) first of all, hes cheap. braces (any dental work) should not be cheap. hes cheap for a reason. he doesnt care about his patients. i hate to judge but you could tell he doesnt care about anything the way he maintains or doesn't maintain himself and his practice. with that being said, i got braces (yes the metal kind not invisalign) when i was in high school i dont know the exact year all i know is i had it removed by the time i was 19 (im 41 now). i had to get it because apparently i had bad teeth but i didnt i just had one upper left teeth that grew inward (snaggletooth) everything else was fine yet i had to get braces so i got braces. looking back now, i wondered why i had to get braces on my bottom row of teeth as well??? there was nothing wrong with my bottom row of teeth, the snaggletooth was on my top row of teeth. i know you dont have to get top and bottom row of braces unless your teeth is in bad condition like you have an overbite or something yet i didnt have an overbite so why did i get top and bottom row of braces. its weird. thats the unprofessionalism i was talking about, he just doesnt care (probably because hes cheap so whatever mentality). you're better off going elsewhere. i recommend invisalign if you could afford it especially if your teeth isnt in bad condition. As a society we focus too much on outer (outter???) appearance especially our teeth yet I could care less as long as your teeth is clean (white) and you don't have any gum problems or speech problems (than again you shouldn't be going to the dentist for speech problems) besides there's more pressing issues to worry about in life than teeth which is essentially calcium. Teeth is a rich white people problem anyways. If you can't afford the good stuff, don't get it. Simple. You get what you pay for. Those who are patients of Dr. Lin knows he's a busy orthodontist. At monthly appointments, you'll find the waiting area packed with kids, teens, moms, dads and grandmothers. But, you have to be patient. Once you're called in to get your braces done, it's all good. Overall, had a great experience here. Some of the assistants are a hit and miss. There's this one dark blonde lady assistant that was consistently accommodating and friendly and showed a sense of care every time at my visits. Dr. Lin himself will come by and work on my braces when there was a special task that needed to be done, but otherwise, for the duration of your ortho care, you'll work directly with the assistants. Cost is very reasonable, even if you don't have insurance. Dr. Lin will offer you a payment plan with no interest, so you can receive orthodontic care without worrying about paying it off. So all in all, would recommend Dr. Lin. Only downside is the waiting and some of the staff's attitude, but otherwise, great place to get that beautiful smile! read more

I hope this serves as a cautionary tale for those seeking orthodontic work. Many years ago in my adolescence, circa 2007, I had the misfortune of having Dr. Lin do my braces. Like many other misfortunate souls I was cursed with an overbite, malocclusion, etc. My parents were referred to this place by some family-friend since we had recently moved to the area and were unfamiliar with orthodontists in the area. As other reviewers may have noted, Dr. Lin may have the lowest braces but buyer beware - that tradeoff is made with quality. Even with an appointment, expect to wait more than 20 minutes to an hour just for a regular checkup. The office is generally high volume which I imagine is to offset their lower braces costs. Dr. Lin generally did not ever seem to bother explaining in detail what the treatment plan was or the procedure being done for that day's appointment, sometimes it seemed like he was just making it up as he was going along. For a period of time I had to wear bands on some of my front teeth and they had to be looped in a certain configuration. Dr. Lin merely applied the bands on, then expected me to immediately memorize the positions from a brief glance in the mirror before he scurried off, much like the other bugs and insects in his office, to the next room. Having braces during adolescence is the dread of teenagers but having them done by Dr. Lin turned it almost into a nightmare. After nearly 3 years they were finally removed but it was not without problems. No mention had been made by Dr. Lin of the apparent midline shift in my top row of teeth, or my peg lateral incisor. It was only after that point that I realized Dr. Lin probably views his patients as walking bank accounts. Take your money elsewhere. If you have kids, consult with a more reputable orthodontist - you will be glad when your children do not resent you in the future. Ehh. I got my braces here. They never sent me check ups even up till now and it's been years... Facility is dirty and the receptionist is really rude!! I always found boogers in Dr. Lin's nostrils when he was checking up on me. My worst fear was his boogers falling into my mouth. I believe braces were around $4500 when I got them done here. I got the clear metal braces, so it definitely costs more than conventional braces. He required that I pull four tooth. Not sure if that was necessary now that I have a gap in both upper and lower in between my teeth. I think I could have kept them. It made my smile a lot smaller... The only reason why I drove so far for this ortho because my high school friend recommended him to me. Originally I was suppose to go to someone better in diamond bar, but no I had to listen to my friend because apparently as a teenager friends "know better" than parents. I live in Lake Elsinore, CA - so about an hour away from this facility. I called this office after being referred by a friend who had his initial consultation; however, had not yet started treatment. I already had braces on my teeth (placed by previous employer) that were ready to be removed, so I was already looking for a new Orthodontist. I am a certified State Board Dental Assistant with Ortho Permitting certification. My prior career was placing braces on children and adults. So when my friend called me, he was concerned as to where to go and what to look for in an Orthodontist. I think that it is important that when you are looking to go to an independent doctor in any field, you go to that doctors individual facility (for example - if you want an orthodontist, go only to an orthodontist office and not a dental/ortho combination facility) as you will get better individual care/treatment directly from the doctor who is providing the treatment. Alright, back to Dr. Lin and his office. This is a situation where looks can definitely be deceiving. The office building is very outdated, but functional. His front office is very small and he has very few front office staff - so chances are you will see the same person every time you go which is good. But keep in mind, this is FRONT OFFICE and not treatment staff. When you are placed into a room, a Dental Tech takes you to the exam chair. She speaks to you about your concerns, treatment, etc. Dr. Lin then comes in and speaks to you. He is very kind and listens and explains everything. His first language is not English so while he does speak and understand it fully, his accent is a bit difficult to understand if you are not looking at him when he speaks. So, be patient and understanding and you will see that this is a very smart doctor and cares for his patients. He did exactly what I asked him to do. I wanted my brackets removed and a permanent retainer placed on my bottom teeth and a removable retainer placed on the top. Today, the bottom brackets were removed and the permanent retainer was placed. Exactly what I asked him to do, under his professional guidance. Next week when my removable retainer arrives, I will return to his office and have it fitted. All in all, I have not had a bad experience on the two occasions that I have been to this office. The staff is very courteous and the materials used are completely sterile. I have not experienced an overbooked appointment schedule that has effected me, but I always show up to any appointment 30 minutes prior to my scheduled appointment. On each visit I was taken back within 5-10 minutes of my scheduled appointment and I was not left alone in an exam room for more than 2-5 minutes. My sister recently visited Dr. Lin to install braces. The first time I took my sister to the office, we came for a regular fix. We waited for one hour in a Wednesday afternoon even with an appointment. The handiwork itself only took 2 minutes, done by the assistant. The waiting area is very small, so many people actually had to sit outside in the hallway, without A/C. Within one week of receiving her braces fix, the wire of her braces began to STICK OUT. We called the office for some help, but they gave us very bad attitude. After couple calls, we were able to go in later for a fix. However, Dr. Lin was not friendly and was inpatient towards my little sister. My little sister even cried after visiting Dr. Lin.. My family is thinking to change to another dentist, but somehow we already paid ahead of time. Now we are confused and wonder what we can do. Definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. read more

I came an hour before they're scheduled to close but I guess they closed early due to lack of customers. I stood outside the locked door and called their phone number because I hear people moving around inside; however, they just picked up the phone and hang up instantly so it would go straight to voicemail. I began knocking on the door and still no response. After a few more calls and a few more times knocking on the door, someone finally opened and said that she didn't open the door because she was scared of people knocking and blatantly lied to my face saying when she picked up the phone no one said anything so she hung up. Wow I am the first patient to review James Lin's practice. I used to see another dentist in the same medical plaza and he recommended James Lin because he's cheap. I had few other consultations but James was very reasonable with his price. He did not offer self-ligating braces when I first went to him but he does now. Nothing fancy but he is good spending enough time with his patients. His staff is all friendly and nice. I don't know. It just felt like the right place when I went to his consultation. No demanding or mean staff, no chessy decoration, no smelly and stingy ortho. I just hate stingy dentists who wanna squeeze the most money out of me. He offers Sat hours too. Only downside is that he only takes cash or check a bit inconvenience And he doesn't speak great English. Something I don't know what he's saying at all. I used to go to Dr. Lin's for my braces and he was always nice and kind to me. Like others, I've always had to wait for my appointment, unless I scheduled my appointment at an odd time, such as 9am or 1pm on Saturday. I chose him because he was reasonable in price and friends spoke highly of his work. Yes, I've had wires break (such are the dangers of orthodontia) and yes it was painful, but he always fixed it up as soon as he could and gave me wax to cover up areas that poked at sores. What resulted after two years were straight teeth and the ability to finally smile. Didn't get rid of my fake smile unfortunately, but them's the breaks. As for the staff, well, they are hit and miss. Really wish we could tell Dr. Lin via suggestion box or something about the ruder-than-need-be ones... Dr. Lin did a fantastic job in fixing my severely crooked canine teeth and overbite. He also provided me with a lot of information on how to improve my overbite and realign my crooked teeth. He worked efficiently and patiently every time I came in for an appointment, and would be more than happy to answer questions and tips on what to avoid eating. After just only 1-2 years my severe overbite was fixed and my teeth are now aligned, making a huge difference in terms of how I talk and smile. read more

Dr. Lin was extremely knowledgeable and patiently explained the process as well as the risks (of not getting a night guard). This is something dentists tend to miss (and have). I was on time for the appointment and did not have to wait long. There can be a wait as on weekends, many other patients tend to be on their own "asian time." This office is in an older building, but think about that as a testament to his experience and sign of an established practice. Doctor Lin has many years of experience(known him for fifteen years), is friendly and low cost. The wait time can be long but it's because you can't beat his prices so he has a lot of patients. People want a bargain but get fussy if they wait longer than ten minutes, this isn't McDonald's. I'm a former employee, current patient, so I now first hand that the people complaining about about their treatment, are the ones that skip months at a time, show up every six months, forget to inform the secretary that they moved or changed their phone number and don't follow their proper brace care instruction. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. HE COMPLETELY RUINED MY TEETH!!! First of all, the building is very dirty and dusty, seems like it hasn't been cleaned it years. The wallpaper is peeling, walls also dirty, and scribbled on. The waiting time is very off no matter how early or late you come, your waiting minimum time is 30 minutes. It doesn't matter what your appointment is meant to be for, I'll wait for an hour and only get serviced for about 2 minutes. The waiting room is constantly packed around 3 up until closing time, and people are waiting outside in the hallways. When I finally get called into a room, someone is already in there and I sit next to that person in the chair across. Once I switch chairs I don't see anyone switch tools or gloves from the previous person. Gross. The sink is constantly dirty, and so are the things located there. If I had to name all my bad experiences, there would be too many. But, here is one. My braces were put on on October 30, 2015. A few months later, a bracket popped off and was put back on. Another bracket then popped off a few weeks later, not secured with glue, but tied from the back to the front of my tooth with a piece of cut wire that was constantly poking my lip, ripping it. Wax didn't help at all, and it got to the point where it completely came off. My next visit, they completely removed the right of my braces, leaving half the wire in my mouth, again tied to the last bracket and front tooth. The only reason they took out that part was because I said my bracket fell off and the wire in the back was poking. Seems like they really didn't care. In February 2016, I got a chunk of the white mold goop onto my front bottom teeth, they said they would take it off in 2 weeks. It was very embarrassing to talk and very hard to eat as I have an underbite. I had to do presentations with that piece in, and I got called out in class for it because it looked like gum. They would shave very small pieces of it off using a drill but, then use a small pick to try and pry it off. Each time they did that, he missed and the sharp pick would hit the roof of my mouth. With the drill bit, he hit my teeth multiple times along with my gums and i would bleed. I still have pieces of it on my teeth and gums which cannot be removed, it is July 2017. Before I finally switched, he put pieces of that white goop onto my back teeth, which he said would fall off, I had to get them drilled off by someone else. I never had a good experience there, cried multiple times, and he never listened. My brother went there for an 11:30 appointment, got spacers (THATS ALL HES GOOD AT), and finished at 1:00 pm. These waiting times are ridiculous. They finally found my files after 2 months of not coming, calling my name for my BROTHER's appointment. Amazing place if you want to waste money, waste time, have unreliable service, ruined teeth, embarrassment, lies, and an unreliable Dr. Horrible place if you want a cost effective plan, amazing results, a great smile, and good service. So I've been going here for almost 3 years to get braces. yes, as an adult. I had one tooth that was severely impacted (I think that's the right term?) and I wanted to make it even. Before choosing Dr. Lin, I went to about 4-5 orthodontists for consultations. Everyone else was either 1. too pricy, 2. wanted to extract teeth, or 3. wanted to shave teeth (apparently I have a small mouth?) I didn't want to do either of those things, I was afraid of problems in the future (less enamel can't ever be good). Finally, Dr. Lin told me that he could straighten my teeth without extracting or shaving, as long as I was ok with a slightly off-center smile. I was fine with that, so I signed up with him. I'm very happy with my decision, even though I'm not quite done yet (it's taking longer than expected...) Dr. Lin's been doing this for years (almost 2 decades I think?) so he's very good, and he only does braces. He also speaks Mandarin, a plus if you do too, he'll chat w/ you! As others have mentioned, he has very reasonable prices and a good payment plan with no interest. I've even forgotten my checkbook a couple of times and I can just pay next time. (He only takes cash or check, no credit cards). Everyone in the office is nice, the blonde receptionist and the blonde assistant (different ladies) especially. Dr. Lin will come check on you at least once every 2-3 appointments, if not more. Also, if you have a problem like a loose wire, just come in and they'll fix it right away. Plenty of parking in this plaza. Scheduling: they are super-flexible. You can basically pick any time if you schedule a month in advance, and you can usually change it if you need to later. Only bad thing is, since they seem to book a bunch of people at the same time (eg, 5 ppl at 4 pm), the wait can be long. Be prepared to wait 30 mins- an hour to be seen on Saturday afternoons, those days are especially busy since all the kids can come. Try to schedule for weekdays, especially mornings, if you can, it's a lot quieter. Also, the office isn't super-modern, but that's not really an issue, it's clean and sterile and that's what matters. This dental office is horrible and a nightmare to say the least. On the day they put on my brackets, my gosh, everything was just so crazy. I saw a bug crawling on the floor. The assistant named Joanne just brushed it off saying it was a centipede. I'm pretty sure those critters don't belong in a dental office. The dental apparatuses look so dirty and ran down, but I still gave this dentist a chance since I keep thinking to myself it could have been a busy day for him. When the dentist started putting the brackets on my teeth, nobody was even in charge to suction out my saliva. I was left in the room by myself for several minutes while my mouth was wide open filling up with fluid. I had to call out the assistant because it felt like I was gonna choke on my own saliva. When the bracket appointment was done, my teeth had so much thick glue on it. Doesn't look nice. Some of the bands started coming off after a FEW DAYS! My next appointment turned out worse than the first one. He put the ring in the molar area and oh my goodness this dentist was just so nasty. He tried fitting one ring at a time on my molar and when several didn't match the size, he just wiped them and put them back in his box. When he finally found a "match" he installed it in my molar area. When he finished, I told him something does not feel right and that my gum area felt like it was sore or something and the rings don't fit right. He just said in an irritated voice "oh you're just sensitive!" in front of the office lady . What a weird doctor. He does not even listen to his patient. 2 days later, my gums started feeling so painful and tender, turned out it was sliced due to the positioning of the ring and got infected. I went to a different dentist to get checked and even he was shaking his head. Dr. Lin is an incompetent dentist with an incompetent staff. When I called to let them know what happened to my gums and that I wouldn't continue treatment, the lady just said, "oh you should have called so the doctor could fix it?" So dumb. Why in the friggin heck would I go back to a dentist that caused me to have pus/infection in my gums? Also, be careful when you give out your insurance info to these people. When I called them for a consultation, they said it was going to be FREE. I checked my insurance statements and they charged several fees that wasn't supposed to be. I called the office, and now they're saying that CONSULTATIONS ARE NOT FREE! These people are scammers. Beware. Worst dentist experience ever! read more

I would not recommend anyone coming here. The wait times are ridiculous. At this orthodontic office, WAIT TIMES OFTEN SURPASS ONE HOUR, EVEN ON WEEKDAYS. This place is often overbooked, so once the waiting room fills up, people begin to pile outside, sitting on the ground. Even for the smallest adjustments, wait times still take FOREVER! James S Lin DDS office is located in a run down building. The outside and inside of the building appears that has not been maintained for decades. The carpet is very dingy, wall paper is old and falling apart and has other maintenance issues. This is also alarming from health standpoint. The decor office was as worse as the buildings. The office signs was mixture of hand written, wood plaque and other materials. The furnitures are old and dirty. The examining room has boxes of office supplies, dusty, filthy, glass wall cabinet displaying teeth, etc. The counters are clutter with medical equipments and tools. There was layers of trays with used medical tools which is a major health violation. The office feels very cramp. His appearances is not very appealing. He seems somewhat knowledgeable but I can't overlook the uncleanness of his office. I would not recommend him because being exposed to germs. I would not risk my child's health by exposing them to germ infested office. In my opinion, the uncleanness of his office is a reflection of him as a doctor. This should be a hugh red flag or warning signs and alarm should be going off in your head. Sadly, I would not be going back to him. My child is my world so I would not put them in harms way. read more

Somehow my orginal review was taken down. So reviewing again. My daughter has had her braces since Oct 2009, yes that is is correct over 4 years because one of her tooth would not come down. After many complaints to Dr. Lin the tooth has moved some what. And now Dr. Lin has scheduled to take off her braces off and I disagree due to the same tooth, it just doesn't look right. I know I'm not a professional but I personally had braces and can speak from experience. Meeting with Dr. Lin today and see how it goes. Will be recommending a second opinion. The receptionists are rude and unwelcoming. The assistants however are very sweet and seems even more knowledgeable than the doctor himself. I rather have them work on me than Dr Lin. Also, the way he snaps at his assistants is mean and condescending and very unprofessional. My teeth were not even straight when he took off the braces but Dr Lin said the retainers will correct the rest. Hello! Retainers do not move your teeth, they RETAIN them in the position they are currently in. He just did not want to finish the job he was paid to do, even my dentist agreed that my teeth still needed work done. I wish I checked out other doctors before I went with him. Dr.Lin is very patience to my children. We have been there for over 6 months for my kids treatment. He is never rushing us when we have the appointment, thats why often times the wait is longer. He is also very considerate and understanding of his clients' situation. Yes, I agree to with other cuatomer said about making appointment but yet we are still have to wait for more than one hour. I think that the manager need to do a better scheduling SERIOUSLY! ! Otherwise whats the apoint of an appointment? Yes, and the staff are true, they are hit or miss. I live Joanne because she is very nice and patience to my kids. But the others are just so so or really bad. Dr. Lin really need to have their people train properly in their knowledge and customer service. This job is suppposed to have human interaction, at least act like civilized person. He ruined my teeth! First off, I was suppose to have my braces off after 18 months. After three years, he took off my braces, and I still had two teeth that weren't aligned. So he made me a retainer with springs, claiming it would straighten those teeth. Not! Right after he removed my braces, I noticed a stain across the front of my teeth where my braces had been. I went back to his office, just to be told that they couldn't see a stain. I went to another dentist who later told me it wasn't a stain. The line was made by the dental grinder they use to remove the glue from the braces. The stain is actually the shading caused by the grooves across my teeth. My teeth are now permanently damaged from where he and his assistant (not Joann) ground my teeth down trying to get the glue off instead of scraping it off. I've spent hundreds of dollars on teeth whitening, to no avail. My only solution now is to get expensive veneers. If you're going there to save money, BEWARE! read more
