On the plus side, they were able to accommodate me for a same-day appointment. And everyone was polite and cheery.
On the negative side, however, it was a terrible experience. As in, much worse than if I hadn't gone in at all. I went in, in August 2012, with a terrible sore throat, and I'd passed out the day before from weakness. I was feeling a bit better that day, but decided I needed a doctor's appointment because I had 2 full-day workshops coming up the next day where I had to present and talk continuously. My health insurance company sent me here since they were in-network.
I was seen by the assistant mostly, and barely for a couple of minutes by the doctor (who didn't really have the time or interest in listening to me describe my symptoms). The doctor insisted on doing a nasaloscopy, despite my disinclination for it. It was painful and nasty (inserted a tube with a camera all the way down my nose into my chest), and of course he didn't see anything. Did a throat swab, couldn't find bacteria, so he concluded it was a virus. Then left. The assistant returned to prescribe me an aggressive 10 day dose of Augmentin, which baffled me. I asked the assistant if that wasn't too aggressive, especially given that he was asking me to take antibiotics when it wasn't a bacterial infection. He seemed under-confident, so he agreed to prescribing a 7 day dosage instead -- which doesn't really give you confidence in your doctor to know that they're wishy-washy when all you're doing is mentioning the obvious to them. I asked if he was sure because I didn't want to leave the full course of antibiotics incomplete and have bacteria return stronger. And he replied, "no you're right, you don't need 10 days." Meanwhile, I'm thinking to myself, "I'M RIGHT?! And HE'S the doctor?"
Long story short, I was much worse the next day. Lost my voice entirely, such that I rasped through the workshops the next 2 days. And I remained very sick for the next 4 weeks. 4 WEEKS! Clearly the antibiotics were useless, and I could have (and did) tell him that. I got hit by a huge bill for the nasaloscopy that I'd never wanted in the first place. An $85 out-of-pocket charge (after what my insurance paid) for making me more sick than I was in the first place! Now it made sense why the doctor had insisted on it. Not cool. And fyi, I was never told the nasaloscopy would cost extra.
I should have known the moment I walked in and saw that it was a cosmetic surgery clinic rather than a real ENT office (looking to make money off people who don't like their ears or noses?). I'd gone in happy the doctor was able to see me the same day, but I ended up hating my experience, and the medical treatment I received made me worse.
I called them expressing my displeasure a couple of months later when I received the bill, but the doctor or assistant never called back. Called them again today and explained to the receptionist the situation (without being rude or anything). They called back and waived $30 of the $85 out-of-pocket charge (appreciated), but I was told by the (nice) receptionist that the doctor wouldn't see me again. Not that I would ever go there again either, but I found it interesting that that's what the doctor asked the receptionist to convey to me, rather than apologizing for my experience. read more
