I did not have a primary care physician until I found Dr. Kurata. I used to check myself in the ER for any serious injuries or sickness and suffer the long hour waits. Well sayonara to spending long hours at the ER. When I first arrived to the office, it is clean and neat. The staff are friendly and helpful. The chairs are comfy. I was seen approximately within 25 minutes. That incuded the time it took for the nurse to check my blood pressure, temperature, etc before Dr. came to see me. Dr. Kurata is practical and straight to the point. He has a great sense of humor. I never had a doctor speak to me how he does, except for my pediatrician when I was younger. He jokes with you and at the same time is seriously talking to you about your health and what is going on with your body and makes sure that you understand. I had a cold for about 2 weeks, and I still had the virus. My prescription was not to run around the house naked during this Hawaii winter weather. (This is a joke, I am not a nudist.) My body was properly healing itself with my white blood cells hard at work. That's great to know that I'm healthy and that my body's immune system is strong. Dr. Kurata makes himself available 24 hours. Even when he is on vacation. I hope I won't have to bother him during his deserved days off, but that is beyond the normal customer service! Dr. Kurata is fortunately my PCP. I doubt if you could find anyone better. He's professional, listens, friendly, and really knows his business! Unfortunately, I've got a few things wrong with me so I have four or five doctors and he's tied for being outstanding along with Dr. Patrick Ellison. If he's even accepting new patients and you have a chance to get him. Do it, he's as good as it gets! As far as the staff goes, compared to almost all doctor's staffs, they're not so bad. Dr. Kurata is a knowledgeable, honest, and straightforward physician. My interactions with him have been very good. As far is rating him I would give him a 5 star. But honestly as far as my overall experience with the practice... The reason for a 3-star rating is due to the staff the front desk. This has been ongoing for some time, just few of the issues: - getting them to call back - often have to guide them with what I would say are common sense basics such as a call back or to confirm receipt of information/fax that they have sent to another office. I recently went through a situation for almost two weeks trying to get my CPAP Rx. I ended up called the Physician's Exchange and was told that Dr. Kurata was out of town and that another Dr's office was covering while he was away. Not once did Dr. Kurata's office state this. They just told me "it may take some time due to doctor's busy schedule." I called the phone number of Dr. Thomas Au who was covering for him and spoke with Carol who took some information and said I would hear back from her today. 10 minutes later I finally received a call back from Dr. Kurata's office stating that the Rx would be sent in today. I have no idea why Dr. Kurata's office did not just share that he was out of town. Or even suggest contacting Dr. Au's office to expedite things? read more

Dr. Kurata overbooks his appointments. My grandmother's appointment was at 10:30 am and she didn't get in with the doctor til 11:30 am. It took a whole hour for them to get to her. I can understand a 15-20 minute wait period, but not an hour. She also said that this has happened before. So it's not like this is the first time they made this "mistake". We ended up having to inconveniently reschedule a doctor's appointment that she had AFTER Dr.Kurata's appointment because his office took too long to get to her. Dr Kurata is a very intelligent, honest and caring physician. I have had no problems with him and he has my respect. It is so refreshing to go to a Dr. that actually keeps up with whatever is happening with u. When I've had lab work or been seen by a specialist, Dr. Karata is already prepared when he comes in the room to discuss results. I've been seeing him since 2011. He has covered me whether he was in or out of the office and has prevented trips to the emergency room on many occasions. He has had changes in staff which has made it hard to get messages through to him at times. As his asst Bryan has come back and the new employees have been trained I'm beginning to see improvement. This Dr. obviously has NO regard for his client's time. I've yet to meet him as he left me waiting in a little room for an hour and twenty minutes while I could here him laughing and joking with another patient in the next room about stuff that has nothing to do with medicine. Listen Dr., internal medicine is still a service industry. It's because of patients like myself, who come to you by referrals, that you can afford the lifestyle you live. Folks make appointments because THEY have schedules in their own lives. Consider others before you over book your appointments. I have long found another internal medicine doctor since I left Dr. Kurata's practice. Since then I have met current patients of Dr. Kurata. Some of the same comments I've heard are long wait times, mainly because he sits and talks to you. It's a 50/50 toss up if it's helpful talk or dazzling showcase of technology use. He also has an assistant that is supposed to follow up with call backs to patients (test results, inquiries, etc.) However, it sounds like the assistant is getting use to his role and often does not return inquiries, results etc in a timely manner. Most of the patients I talked to said they stick with Dr. Kurata because it would be hard to find a new PCP and build the history report... but as a good doctor with new patients, don't most read the file before going in? In the end, you have to decide whats important for you in PCP. read more

My father recently became a patient of Dr Kurata after his longtime GP retired from medicine. Our experience with Dr Kurata & his staff have been fantastic. He was thorough with my dad's care & even took the time to connect with my father. Dr Kurata taught us so much in our first 3 visits (ex: to inform my dads ophthalmologist that he takes Plaquenil, basic exercises he can do while watching tv, Dr Kurata even helped my dad get gait classes to help prevent falls due to chronic arthritis. In my fathers older age, he is less jovial and hard to please, however Dr Kurata seems to have won him over in just 3 visits. read more

My in-laws use Dr. Kurata. He is good about squeezing them in at the end of the day to prevent trips to the urgent care centers. He recently made a good call to have my father-in-law sent to the ER. He had symptoms of weakness and head bruises from a fall, and had a history of aneurysms. MRI could not be scheduled for a few days so Dr. Kurata had him admitted to the ER. The ER doctor was annoyed at first because he thought it was premature, but my father-in-law had a major medical episode shortly after being admitted. Dr. Kurata is a very confident, considerate physician and we have the utmost trust that he will provide our family with the best medical care possible. There is a sign in sheet and the staff is well-trained in multi-tasking as well as trying to deal with irate patients. They are kind and we never got scolded for being late or forgetful! They remind us nicely about follow up appointments they are very compassionate with a lot of patients. We've been a patient for many years and we really like him. He is very down to earth and very easy to talk to. Sometimes appointments run a good deal late... but this is because Dr. Kurata cares about his patient's health problems.
