I learned that it's impossible to get insurance to pay for physical therapy without a referral from a GP, and almost everyone I called didn't have appointment for at least four weeks. Enter Dr. Nakamura and his awesome staff. They saw me the same day I called (which is almost unheard of), and I was given the most complete exam I've ever gotten. He actually heard the things I was telling him, and gave me very honest answers to some slightly odd/neurotic questions. I got my referral to a PT, as well as a tetanus booster. Well sayonara to spending long hours at the ER. When I first arrived to the office, it is clean and neat. The staff are friendly and helpful. The chairs are comfy. I was seen approximately within 25 minutes. That incuded the time it took for the nurse to check my blood pressure, temperature, etc before Dr. came to see me. Dr. Kurata is practical and straight to the point. He has a great sense of humor. I never had a doctor speak to me how he does, except for my pediatrician when I was younger. He jokes with you and at the same time is seriously talking to you about your health and what is going on with your body and makes sure that you understand. I had a cold for about 2 weeks, and I still had the virus. My prescription was not to run around the house naked during this Hawaii winter weather. (This is a joke, I am not a nudist.) My body was properly healing itself with my white blood cells hard at work. That's great to know that I'm healthy and that my body's immune system is strong. Dr. Kurata makes himself available 24 hours. Even when he is on vacation. I hope I won't have to bother him during his deserved days off, but that is beyond the normal customer service! Having to go to a doctor is almost *never* a cup of tea. Searching for the right doctor isn't one,…read moreeither. We tend to rely heavily on word of mouth and when I found out that my sister (who is a nurse) and my niece found a doctor they liked and trusted- I decided to give him a shot. I booked an appointment with Dr. Lee through his office and the soonest appointment available for a new patient was about one month later. It wasn't an emergency in my case, but it did seem a little long to wait... I'm glad I did, though! Unfortunately at the time of my first visit I had just suffered through miscarriage. It was a difficult time and Dr. Lee proved to be one of the most patient, kind and thorough doctors I have ever met. He ordered for me to do a series of tests to make sure everything was okay and to be proactive with my health since i hadn't been to a doctor in years. Upon receiving the results, he instructed me of what supplements I should be on and what to watch out for and what he would monitor over time. I've visited him on several occasions for different things. The most recent being for my lungs. As a former smoker, I was concerned about my breathing and he listened in and ordered a chest x-ray that very morning to be read by him immediately [to rule out cancer]. I do have to take medicine for an inflammation and build up but I was so grateful that he was proactive and took my concerns to heart. Dr. Lee is now our family doctor for my fiance and I -and hopefully one day soon for our little ones as well :-)... I must say, the wait for beau's first visit is almost 3 months... If you're a new patient and not in a rush- do not let the wait discourage you! It's a miracle he's still accepting new patients. Plus, it's only a wait for new patients-- once you are a patient of his, you become a priority. He even works on Saturdays. In the event you get an appointment, you should get to the office on time but be prepared to wait. Because of his attention and genuine concern for his patients, he takes his time with each individual. I've never felt rushed. His office is located in the Kuakini Medical Plaza on the 3rd floor. If you are coming from the parking garage, you'll have to take the elevator to the 4th floor where you will find the entrance to the Plaza building (kind of confusing- but you can handle!).
