This is also a review of the successor business, Royal Oak. I was a satisfied client of Dr. Pyle's for 20+ years. Successor dentist seems pleasant and competent. However he pressured me into having full jaw X-rays despite my concern that I did not want this kind of radiation exposure because of recent medical imaging exposure. Had a real "Dr. is right, take it or leave it" attitude. I would have wanted to research exposure risks (and I have the training to do so) and wait until next visit but he did not want to examine me without the X-rays (something Dr. Pyle always respected). I was a patient here for a long time, but the office turned me off with their aggressive sales practices. First, I got unexpected phone calls trying to get me to make appointments on their schedule. Another time, he recommended a completely optional procedure and a couple months later they called to try to get me to have the (unnecessary) procedure done. He once told me that my gums were receding because I was brushing too hard. I adjusted by buying a soft electric toothbrush. When I brought that issue up at an appointment, he denied having told me that in the first place. Um, I didn't make that up, and you're the only dentist I've seen for the past 10 years. I don't write many reviews, but I figure the stakes are much higher in choosing a dentist than choosing a place to get dinner. I've moved around a fair bit so I've had 3 different dentists in 3 different states in the past few years. I've now been to Dr. Pyle's office 3 times over the past year and a half and have been pleased with the every experience. I have a fairly unpredictable schedule and often don't get much notice as to when I might have enough time off from work. Ann in the front desk has always been very helpful in trying to squeeze me in when possible, or taking down my info and calling me if a spot does open up. The actual appointments have run very smoothly. There's free parking in the back. I've never had to wait more than a couple minutes in the waiting room, which is great. Both hygienists I've had were friendly and thorough. Dr. Pyle has always been very friendly and informative with me. He didn't spend a ton of time with me but it's because my teeth have been healthy - as somebody in the medical profession, I know that there aren't many ways to say everything looks normal. Both my wife (also a patient of Dr. Pyle) and I were genuinely surprised that another Yelper found him not to have a good bedside manner. I haven't had any major work done on my teeth, just routine exams / cleanings, but my wife did have a procedure and she didn't have any problems with the whole experience. read more

I LOVED Dr Pyle. Unfortunately Dr Pyle retired in August 2018 and sold the practice to Royal Oak Dental Group. SO THIS IS A REVIEW OF ROYAL OAK DENTAL PRACTICE AND NOT DR JAMES PYLE. For the past two months I've felt harassed by the new practice, receiving more calls, emails, and letters than I did in 10+ years with Dr Pyle. I would have driven 160 miles R/T to continue as Dr Pyle's ent but I did not want to make that drive for an unknown dentist. Coupled with feeling like my money was what Royal Oak valued most about me as a patient, I decided to find a dentist in my new hometown. I called to have my records transferred and it was literally like pulling teeth. They need written permission but they don't have a form for me to complete. My x-rays are old (2018) so they're not sure they're worth sending. Will you send the notes on my visits and fillings? No, we'll send a ledger. Your new dentist should understand that. What part of "please send my complete dental records" is unclear? I did some research and it looks like Royal Oak is just another huge and impersonal dental practice where patients are just dollar signs. I sent everyone who asked for a dentist recommendation to Dr Pyle. Now I want everyone to be very wary of Royal Oak Dental Group. read more

Recently had a first checkup here and was quite impressed. Everyone I interacted with was friendly and helped put me at ease. Most importantly for me, they showed me my X-rays and explained what was going on in a way that invited questions and discussion rather than stifling it them. They had more tech toys than I've seen at a dentist's office before and they actually seemed to make good use of them; I feel like the tech definitely added to the diagnostic effort. For example, they took photographs of some potential problem teeth to see if the situation changes between now and my next visit. It's simple, but I've never had anyone in the medical profession document to that level... it's almost like they expect to see me again! With service like that, they definitely will. read more

Dr. Pyle came highly reccomended by a friend. Mostly I just get teeth cleaned but a couple years back I had a cap built, instead of a full crown. I was impressed that he was dedicated to perserving as much of the tooth as possible. The protecting dam to keep metals from going down my throat worked! I've been going to Dr. Pyle's twice a year for about 15 years. The staff are friendly. Dr. Pyle, however, isn't gentle or compassionate. If you're just getting your teeth cleaned, it's fine, but if it's anything more intrusive than that, I don't recommend him. Usually the staff do almost everything and he pops in at the end to make sure it's right. He always seems rushed, and unconcerned, which, like I said isn't too big of a deal if you're just having a routine cleaning. If you need someone with a good bedside attitude, look elsewhere. He's definitely not for anyone who panics at sharp objects; he was irritated at me for being scared and tense. He made the situation more uncomfortable for me. I perceived that he was just trying to finish up and get to something else, rather than being thorough and making sure I was comfortable... Definitely not something I want in a dentist! All that said, they've never messed anything up. So if you're just looking for a dentist who can do good work, he might be your guy. read more

Due to insurance coverage problems both my wife and I had to change dentists. We started seeing Dr. Pyle around two years ago and have been in many times for cleanings, x-rays, cavities etc.. I have fairly severe dental issues and researched dentists carefully before making a choice to see Dr. Pyle. Dr. Pyle has been great! Both my wife and I are very pleased with him and his staff (which are first rate too). Dr. Pyle is friendly and good at what he does. read more

When I first moved back to the Triangle area, it had been a few years since I had seen a dentist, and I knew I was overdue for a checkup (and probably had acquired a cavity or two along the way). I had no idea how to find a dentist, so when I happened to drive down Broad Street and see the sign for Dr.Pyle's office, I thought, "Yay! Dentist so close to where I live!" and immediately made an appointment. While the office staff was friendly enough, and Dr.Pyle was superficially friendly, I only saw him for about five seconds during my first visit. He noted a cavity, so I came back on a different day for it to be filled. Mid-cavity filling, he discovered another cavity, and filled that too. After I left, the filling dislodged on that same day, and I suffered severe tooth pain for the next week. It eventually healed and improved on its own, but I overall got the sense that Dr.Pyle did a rushed job, and was not careful or thorough. In all my years going to many dentists, I have never encountered one who spent as little time examining and reviewing teeth as this one did. So I did not return, and am much happier with my new one. read more

I love this office! Absolutely wonderful staff from the sweet receptionist, to the friendly hygienist, to good ole Dr Pyle himself. Scheduling is always great and they give appointment reminders which I helpful. I recommend this place all the time to friends, who also love it. read more

I had two very strange experiences at Doctor Pyle's office: #1: One day the plan was to sedate me because he needed to do a lot of work and I am a sensitive patient. (My gum surgeries make me more sensitive than the average patient). I had done the financial planning in advance and came at the agreed time. His assistant gave me the sedation pill, and afterwards told me a different price than the one agreed. It was a lot more money. Tears streamed down my cheeks due to the unplanned financial stress. His assistant kissed me on the cheek. Later Dr Pyle gave me a hasty apology and charged the correct amount. #2 I went for a routine cleaning. The hygienist acted very strangely. She acted jealous that I periodically also get cleanings at my periodontist and said "maybe the sedation creme tastes better there" and "you put pressure on me last time to use this particular instrument". I managed to say "I am not sure what you are talking about but I am a reasonable person". Dr Pyle came in the room and began to yell at me as I was lying in the chair. I just left because I began to feel really intimidated at this large man yelling at me in such a hostile manner. I was not treated fairly or with respect there. His staff acts in very strange ways. There is very little tolerance for sensitivity there apparently. What a strange and unpleasant experience I had there! read more

Dr. Pyle has been my dentist for 20 years. When I first became a patient I had been neglectful of my dental hygiene and was quite nervous. Although there was some work to be done I can say my care has been stellar and valuable. Dr. Pyle always gives professional advice and options that fit my needs and budget. I just saw Dr. Pyle for my routine 6-month checkup. I appreciate this office is close to my office (4 minute drive). It's very convenient. Ann, the office manager, is very friendly. She calls me a day or two prior to my appointment to re-confirm, which is always very helpful. The dental tech does a thorough job with my teeth. Dr. Pyle does a complete review/check after the cleaning and discusses the situation with my teeth. Appts are on-time and billing is never an issue. My husband and I would recommend Dr. Pyle and his team highly.... read more
