Dr Frank is rude, condescending, judgmental, and not any better than a typical gastroenterologist. He's like Dr House, if Dr House wasn't all that good at medicine. Like others, I also saw him because he got such great reviews. In all seriousness I don't believe the positive reviews. "He knows what he's doing and he truly cares for his patients." LOL I saw Dr Frank at least a half-dozen times and never, not once, would I describe him as a person who "truly cares for his patients." He seems to have nothing but contempt for his patients! Honestly, he treated me so poorly as a person that it bordered on abusive and I stopped seeing him. He is a terrible doctor. read more

I had two colonoscopies performed by doctor Frank, the last one six or seven years ago. They were both done at the MedStar outpatient offices on 21st street in Washington D.C. The first was done 16 or 17 years ago and everything went smoothly, though I did begin to come out of anesthesia prior to the endoscope being fully withdrawn, which created an uncomfortable feeling. For the second colonoscopy Dr Frank prescribed an off-label prep administration. I was to take the first and final prep dosages within several hours of each other, since I was scheduled for an early morning procedure, even though the prep label indicated the entire dosage should not be consumed in the same day. After the procedure I had atrial flutter and could not be discharged. Instead I was taken by ambulance to GWU hospital where I was treated in the ER for six hours. They were getting ready to admit me there when my heart spontaneously converted (after large doses of various electrolytes that had been depleted from my body by the prep). Because there was permanent damage to my heart I am sentenced to taking blood thinners for the rest of my life to prevent future strokes. Since the prep had been prescribed off-label I was told that mine was a "sentinel" event and the FDA had to be notified. I found out later that my hear rate prior to the colonoscopy was over 120 BPM, and that the procedure should not have been performed for that reason alone. Dr Frank's reckless desire to continue on schedule regardless of the contravening signs negatively changed my life forever. The uneducated public generally rates doctors based on how friendly or organized they are, or their schooling or how timely they are. What other criteria do we have to go on? They NEVER tell you about their failures or flubs because that could affect their business. For the most part, everything these doctors do is just fine, until it isn't. If I had sued this guy, as my wife wanted me to, I probably would have been silenced by an NDA as part of the settlement. But I didn't. So I'm telling you something Doctor Frank would never tell you himself nor would he want you to know. read more

If you're looking for a doctor to gently hold your hand and spend time chit chatting about your mother and cats, then Dr Frank is not for you. He is not here for idle chatter and wasting time. He gets in, greets you, runs his test and diagnosis, then he's out the door. If you are one who is very sensitive and likes to be coddled, you might be offended by him; you mustn't have thin skin. Dr Frank is very thorough and extremely knowledgeable. He takes the approach of finding the root of the problem instead of just treating the symptoms. He also is one to call you and give you tests results over the phone instead of making you come in and pay a copay just for two minutes of his time. If you ever have a stomach ailment, I definitely recommend Dr Frank. Just make sure you know what to expect so you won't be offended. read more

There comes a time in most people's lives, if you are lucky enough to live long enough, that you'll have to visit a gastroenterologist. When this time comes, I'd recommend Dr. Frank enthusiastically. Dr Frank is a great listener. He explains everything in great detail. And he's efficient. He makes an uncomfortable experience somehow not that bad with his many jokes and humor. I really appreciate someone who is as down to earth as him. It took me about a 3-weeks to get to see Dr. Frank. But like most doctors in DC, once you are in the door you can communicate pretty easily thereafter. Once I got to the office, I waited about 1 minute before the usual statistical workup (weight, blood pressure, medical history) and about 2 more minutes before seeing Dr. Frank. read more

From the very first phone call on January 29th with Dottie, who connected me to Emily in Dr. Frank's office that helped me schedule my appointment for today and follow up calls with both Emily and Isabel to answer more questions, to Sophia's clear concise post procedural instructions this morning at 9:30am it was a smooth and efficient operation. Signing in with Marilyn today on the 10th floor at 6:30am was quick efficient, Sara's calming manor as she took my vital signs, prepared the intravenous system, Dr. Luck's thorough explanation of the anesthesia procedure, Kristin and Layney's also calming demeanor and continuing explanation of what was about to happen ~ all of this made today a relaxing and pleasant experience. read more

Dr. Frank is a great doctor. He knows what he's doing and he truly cares for his patients. His office is conveniently located, but finding parking can prove to be quite a pain. parking on K Street id your best bet if you chose to drive here. He shares an office with one other doctor so make sure to go to the leftmost window when you enter his lobby. Like the other reviews here say, he's not chatty, he's straightforward and he doesn't mess around. If you want to chat and gossip, go to the hair salon, Dr. Frank ain't got time for that. Dr. Frank is awesome. He takes the time to listen to your concerns and to address them. I saw him because I was experiencing some gastro symptoms that were of concern. He examined me thoroughly which I had not experienced with other gastro physicians that I previously saw in pursuit of answers to my symptoms. He then scheduled a colonoscopy/endoscopy within a couple of days to make sure there was nothing major going on. To say the least, I was extremely pleased with the quick turn around which allowed for me to put my fears to rest. I recommend Dr. Frank to anyone seeking a great gastroenterologist. read more

How thick is your skin? Mine isn't very thick so when barked at, I was hurt. I also felt like I had bothered him with my call. I also frustrated that I had to keep repeating "I am in pain" to not be blown off. After an endoscopy, he said "you're fine" and walked away. I had to call after him that that doesn't explain the pain, to which he came back to talk to me. Also, frustratingly, the Dr on-call to 90 min to call me back after I let him know I was in the ER. Even more frustrating was that Dr Frank did not call me until the next afternoon. In the end, I took it as I was being fired so I found a different one. Lowdown: Competent: yes. So, I had my FIRST consultation for a colonoscopy yesterday and was VERY nervous about it, especially since this was a referral and I had no idea of what type of doctor I would get. THIS doctor had me comfortable at "hello"! Not only did he have a wonderful sense of humor but was precise in the information he was giving me, which put me at ease immediately. Dr. Frank didn't rush me, he spoke clearly as he described the technical part of the procedure from A to Z and he let me take my time when I had questions, which he answered with no problem. His bedside manners was A+. Now, I'm still a little nervous about the procedure itself but just knowing he's going to be there and probably have me laughing until I pass out from the meds :o), gives me the comfort I need to prepare for the procedure. My first appointment I thought he might have had a bad day because he was being very rude but quickly learned after the second appointment that that's just his personality. I like Dr. Frank, he's definitely a little brusque, but he's good at his job so I think if you go in knowing what to expect, that helps. I'd recommend knowing what you want to ask him first and writing it down so you don't forget before he heads out the door because he's not the type to wait around for you to think. Dr. Frank is a great gastroenterologist. I have been a patient for over eight years. He is knowledgeable, professional, friendly, gentle, and thorough. He truly cares about his patients. When a patient feels bad, he feels bad. He wants all of his patients to feel good, and it shows. If I am experiencing symptoms, he listens well, he explains everything very thoroughly, and he is always open to questions or requests for clarifications. Dr. Frank has a large number of patients, and sometimes he seems overloaded with work. Don't let that fool you. He cares about each and every one of his patients, no matter how many he has. Dr. Frank's front office staff is also professional, particularly Emily, who is a gem. The office itself is quite clean and organized. He's a good doctor but his receptionist that I spoke with yesterday morning is rude and not there to be helpful. I'm an existing patient but was told I had to wait 3 weeks for an appointment. Fortunately my primary care doc was able to see me right away and immediately ordered an emergency CAT scan. Suffice it to say, I'm now in search for a new GI doctor. read more

Why should you be admonished and barked at when you are trying to get help? The whole time I felt I had to justify my answers. He never asked why I didn't take a medication and just assumed I was non compliant. He was beyond rude and just an ass. His staff is also is rude and it is very difficult to get an appointment. It took two months for the first visit and 1 month later for second visit. During the first visit, he was very thorough however during the second visit he asked the same questions and said he didn't remember instead of looking at his notes. The whole time he was rolling his eyes and it felt like he just wanted to leave. What an awful experience. I will go through with my last diagnostic procedure since I have been dealing with the pain for a year and go elsewhere for follow up care. This is the first review I've ever written for a physician, but because I feel so strongly about him and how he helped me, I felt compelled to write one. I was a patient of doctor Frank's for years. I would still be his patient if I had not moved so far out of the WDC area. When no-one else was able to get my newly diagnosed Crohn's under control, he was. Is his manner direct and to the point; yes, but unlike other physician's, he will tell it to you straight. He realizes that everyone's time is important and get's right to it. He may seem like a no-nonsense kind of person, but he is kind and funny and reassuring when the situation calls for it. If you are looking for someone to hold your hand, tell you it's going to be alright and then forget about you the second you walk out the door, this is not the guy. But if you are looking for a doctor who's going to dive right in and focus on getting you better he is the one. read more

Dr. Frank made a not very happy procedure as easy and fun as it could be. My brother has recently been diagnosed with Colo-rectal cancer (by Dr. Frank) and all of my local family members have been to see him in the last 4-6 months. We all give him rave reviews. He had me laughing and joking through-out the pre-exam and was totally available for questions through out the prep for the procedure. Dr. Frank is as good as it gets if you're going to have a scope up your butt. I disagree with other reviewers who say he is brusque and has no bedside manner. He's always been very friendly and easy going with me. Maybe it's them, and not Dr. Frank. I've been seeing him for over ten years and had two colonoscopies by him, the most recent about two months ago. I went to Dr. Frank's office for the first time this week and had a great experience. The assistant staff were friendly and helpful, and Dr. Frank himself was an absolute gem. He clearly communicated all of my options in a way that I understood using a visual chart. My only suggestion would be to spruce up the office a bit to help the space look cleaner. I was initially a little off-put by the restroom and the hundreds of brochures lying haphazardly on the counters. A coat of paint in the lobby would do wonders. However, Dr. Frank was great and I do intend to return. read more

Dr. Frank probably knows a lot about gastroenterology, but he knows very little about bedside manner or professionalism. He will not return your phone calls even if you say that the matter is urgent or if he was the one who asked you to call him. He will give you a diagnosis or the results of your tests in a crowded waiting room. His staff is very rude. read more
