Listen to the reviews. This gastro practice has gone downhill for me. Last appointment I had I believe I was the first or second appointment of the day. They still called me in late. The nurse who did intake wasn't very friendly, either. Then I got to see my provider (name withheld until I set up care elsewhere) and got a pretty broad and unthorough, scoldy interaction. She said I should have come last year even though she never told me I needed yearly check ins. She ordered studies but didn't really tell me what she was looking for, but then later said we had a whole discussion on it. I will say the studies were thorough and necessary so I don't question the expertise, more so the interactions. I do appreciate you can communicate directly via the portal. The other - BIG - problem is that it's basically impossible to reach the office directly. I don't know if this is some private equity ownership nonsense or what not but their scheduling is centralized and disconnected. It's hard to reach them for an appointment in the first place and if you need to reschedule it's almost mission impossible. I don't know when parts of the medical profession decided that speaking to an office directly was a bad idea, but omg, that has to be one of the worst developments in medicine. I am probably moving my care elsewhere. read more

I called to schedule and appointment because I am in extreme pain, and the receptionist was audibly rude and when the appointments did not work in my favor, she hung up without telling me anything. Her tone was rude when asking me for my information. I would not recommend this place through calling. The fact that the first person a patient has to talk to is rude is inappropriate, unacceptable, and unprofessional. read more

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Capital Digestive Care, particularly their lack of transparency and empathy. When I initially called to schedule my appointment, I had a 15-minute conversation with the staff member who answered the phone. I explained in detail that I am a federal employee who was recently terminated and that I only had 30 days to use my health insurance. We discussed my situation at length. During that call, she mentioned that she wasn't sure the doctor could see me, but that a physician assistant (PA) could. I informed her that I am diabetic, and she said that might change things. Ultimately, she stated the PA could see me, but I would need to return later to see the doctor. I agreed and scheduled the appointment. At no point during this lengthy call was I informed of a 48-hour cancellation policy. After thinking it through, I realized it made no sense to see the PA when I would not have insurance by the time I could see the doctor. I called to cancel the appointment before the standard 24-hour cancellation window, believing I was acting responsibly. That's when I was suddenly told their policy is 48 hours, and that I would be charged a $50 no-show fee. I explained that I was never informed of this policy and that if I had been, I would have canceled earlier. Instead of acknowledging the possibility of a mistake--especially given the emotional and complex nature of our original conversation--they insisted I was told and refused to reconsider. I even suggested that perhaps my discussion about federal terminations and losing insurance may have distracted the staff member and that the policy was simply not mentioned. I asked them to review the recorded call (if calls are recorded), but this was dismissed. The billing manager repeated that the "directors" decided I must be charged anyway. This experience shows a complete lack of compassion, accountability, and transparency. Charging a patient a fee for a policy that was never disclosed--especially someone dealing with job loss and impending loss of health insurance--is unacceptable. Policies mean nothing if they are not clearly communicated. I would strongly caution others to get every policy in writing upfront, because Capital Digestive Care will not give you the benefit of the doubt, even when their own staff may be at fault. read more

If you set foot here you'll get charge 400 dollars. I was seen by a Nurse Practitioner for 15 minutes - received no diagnostic, no follow up, nothing, and was billed 700 dollars. When I try to dispute my claim the billing team was extremely unprofessional, he made sounds to interrupt me and told me to take my complaint to Capitol Hill. Insane behavior. They knowingly misrepresented insurance coverage - they said they were in network when their affiliated facility (Friendship Heights Endiscopy Center) at which they did the procedure, was not. Kept getting bills, 5 EOBs later, for hundreds of dollars more than a year later. Avoid them!! read more

I would highly suggest avoiding capital digestive care and reading the other negative reviews. I cannot comment on the quality of the doctors but I will say that their scheduling department is incompetent and their billing department is entirely unhelpful. Their office scheduled an appointment for me at a time I was not available. I explicitly told the staff member to not proceed with the appointment. So when I received a notification of an upcoming appointment, I was very surprised. I called the office to cancel my appointment and yet somehow I was still charged a no-show fee. It is ridiculous that I was made to pay an unnecessary fee for a mistake that your office made. I am not someone who normally writes reviews but my experience with capital digestive care was so frustrating that it forced me to leave a review. The billing department is incompetent and failed to call me back several times after they said they would work on my issue. I had to call them several times. They demanded $38.43 before I had the preventive consult. I had health insurance and they were well aware of it. They billed me as a new patient versus a consult. The bill was almost $400. It went on for months to get this resolved. Still not resolved. It's been almost a year. I went to a second provider for same preventive service and procedure shortly after the visit to Capital Digestive Care. My financial liability for both services was $0. Now Capital Digestive Care are threatening collections. If this is their practice, I don't think you want them to take your hard earned money for how they think it should be used. read more

I have been working with Hannah Zelnik for over a year to resolve some challenging intestinal issues, I believe stem from a bout of COVID back in 2020. She has been beyond helpful and responsive. At times I think she's more invested than I am in finding out what on earth is wrong with me! I don't know what I'd do without her. I am relieved to have her on my team of medical experts (you start to develop a "team" as you get older) and know she's 100% dedicated to helping me resolve my issues... no matter how long it takes. I have been a patient here for over 10 years. I have struggled with stomach issues since I was a child. I started with Dr Truillo, CRNP Amy Stewart and Dr Daher... all have been very informative and supportive in my stomach issues. I have had several surgical procedures and various test in their endoscopy center. I appreciate the level of care and privacy given. I recommend the staff and facility if you are in need of a really good gastrointestinal team. read more

Staff members are rude, inefficient, and uncaring. Most of them seem to hate their jobs. The PA Robin really didn't care about my needs or condition. She gave me advice that is outdated and biased. MA staff gave me the wrong form (last year's copy). I had to call a couple of times to retrieve the updated form. TERRIBLE experience, two times. I will not be going back. The first visit, 3 years ago, I arrived for a routine procedure for which I had to fast. Fasting triggers my migraines, and anesthesia is also a trigger. I told the nursing staff that I was in pain and they responded by saying that I could have coffee and tylonol when I was finished and that I would feel better then. Long story short I ended up at Urgent Care later that evening, because of an intractable migraine. I was told that the procedure wasn't completely successful, that I would have to come back in 3 years and follow a more extreme fasting preparation for the next time. I made an appointment three years later. I contacted the head of anesthesiology at Capital Digestive to let him know what I would need extra attention to avoid another intractable migraine. He promised he would follow up with me and the other doctors. He did NOT contact the anesthesiologist who treated me, and she did not have the medications that I needed. She reverted to giving me Fentanyl, which was the only solution she could come up with. She was kind and concerned, as were the nurses, but the doctor who I was initially scheduled to see, Dr Howard, was TERRIBLE. Eventually I ended up with Dr. Kirsh, who was very nice. So many things went wrong. Also, the pre-procedure waiting area at the K St location is AWFUL. Every patient is asked for their name, DOB, procedure, in earshot of every other patient. They are given preliminary results within earshot of every other patient. I'm not sure this even meets HIPAA standards. read more

I have Always use Capital digestive care and never got an issue , until recently. I made the appointment to see Jessica D Korman. But due to a change of schedule I called The office to cancel , they ask me if I want to re-schedule and I say not at the moment . They never mention anything about a cancelation fee and since I call the day before I didn't expect anything. until I got an invoice of $50.00 for cancelation when I call they say is 48 hours and they claim that the office person noted that she explain to me but that wasn't true. I explain that was never mention this to me when I call and they tell me that a manager will see that and call me back. I didn't hear back but I got two more invoices so I decided to call and ask what happen to the call back, Noemi from the office just tell me that the manager wrote that the invoice stays and need to be pay. I say ok , I will pay and give you a bad review for the poor communication She was ok with that . I pay and I WILL NEVER use them again.!! i recently had a colonoscophy at the laurel md. office and i used the prep that they recommended and it did not clear. i told the nurse had not cleared and they did it anyway. after waking up the doctor he could not see anything and suggested i come back the next day to try again. total waste of money and to suggest i fast for another 24 hours is ridiculous. read more

Terrible practice--and I've seen many GI doctors. Stay away. It was fine when I started going there ~3 years ago, although I was never fond of my doctor. But she did seem to care. But the practice kept growing and growing--at this point, they've outgrown themselves; it's chaotic and way too busy. The website says they're the "largest practice in the DMV"-- I wouldn't brag if I were them. My last 2 colonoscopies were dreadful--it's a ZOO in there, no one talks to you, or to each other, and the lack of communication shows in how you are treated. Hard to believe, but I preferred my colonoscopies at GW-MFA, which I left because my doctor wasn't interested in my issues. He was fine, but had little EQ and a lot of arrogance. However, GW MFA nurses and the other medical staff are amazing; you're treated with kid gloves, and the atmosphere is calm and reassuring. CDC does have an excellent NP, Amy Stewart, but she's it. The practice failed to return a call from my insurance, which wouldn't pay for one of my prep medications for a recent colonoscopy. Because of CDC, I couldn't have my procedure. It was a total sh*& show, with a "sorry, not sorry" apology. They're just too busy and chaotic. So, I'm moving on to another practice. Will let you know how it goes. read more

I have been very disappointed by my ability to access responsive answers to my recent concerns. There has been scheduling mistakes and a 3 day delay in response even on their portal. I am trying to get answers on how to proceed with my next step taht ehy told me i needed to do but it has been over a week and NO ANSWER! Rude as shit! Call their office when they are busy (you can't leave voicemail) the message is so rude and entitled. So you have to keep calling back, over and over, to get ahold of a person, even if its urgent. I think they need to fire everyone in the front office and new staff. I am giving a five star rating for Dr. Kauffman. Dr. Kauffman is extremely responsive, professional, and kind. He found room in his schedule for me and was always accomodating. He listened to my concerns and worked with me to develop a plan to treat my symptoms. In order to do so, I needed a small procedure. The night before, Dr. Kauffman was available on his cell phone until 11 PM when I was having complications with my prescription. Couldn't recommend Dr. Kauffman enough! read more

I have had an exteremly positive time with Dr. Chandler at the Bethesda center. Personally have had multiple stomach issues and have had to have an endoscopy performed. Procedure was extremely smooth with no discomfort at all, and have loved the staff and path that I have been provided. We usually see Dr's when something is wrong, so I think some folks forget that we are all human with responses and timing. Would recommend to then next individual read more

I'm leaving the DMV area after five years and one of the saddest parts of leaving will be leaving the care of Dr. Shah and her team! They're kind, thoughtful, and dedicated to actually figuring out what's going on with your symptoms. Also the infusion center in Friendship Heights is great. I had a colonoscopy in Sibley Memorial Hospital. All the people there were fantastic. They explained everything to me and they took good care of me. BUT, the doctor's office staff NEVER called me before the procedure. It was the hospital who alerted me on THURSDAY (my procedure was THE NEXT DAY) that I needed some PREP medication. So, I called Thursday afternoon about a procedure I had Friday morning. I heard through the phone some OOPS, like WHAT IS GOING ON?. So, I had to go to the pharmacy right away to pick up my prep medication and take it the next hour. As I said the Hospital was AMAZING with me, the doctor as well. When I arrived home after the procedure, I received an email from CAPITAL DIGESTIVE CARE Administrative Team Leader, asking me if I HAD PICKED UP my medicine for a procedure I had three hours before!!! REMEMBER, the office never CALLED me. I had to do their work. read more

I can not say enough positive things about this office/practice. Dr. Dominique Howard is whip-smart, responsive and no-nonsense. She called me (herself) to tell me about my blood work results, even though the results were fine. And the first time I did not pick up... so she called back! I have had various office visits and procedures in the K Street office (including several colonoscopies) over the past 10 years and the staff is so respectful and knowledgeable. I was in a panic before my first colonoscopy but everything was so easy, painless and well explained.....and the place is so clean! I have been seeing Dr Korman for 2 years. I have never had any problems or issues scheduling an appointment or for treatment. She is very thorough and compassionate. I am also in a health care field and I fully understand the importance of getting an anal scope done and treatment for damage from the HPV virus removed. The benefits from the procedure far out way the dangers of the damage progressing to anal cancer. I would highly suggest to anyone in the risk group to take this very serious and get checked out and treated by Dr Korman or anyone who can do it for you. read more

This place is garbage. I had a colonoscopy and they never called with the results, I had to call them. Doctor hadn't reviewed the results when I talked to him and stumbled through them, dismissed everything as fine and then the problem came back. Without an appointment, he put me on medicine. But then they screwed up the prescription, so I ran out of the samples they gave me and had to go off said medicine for a day and a half while they figured it out. Took 2.5 weeks to get an appointment and then when I showed up (midday having left work), they told me the doctor was running 45 minutes behind and it would take another 2.5 weeks to reschedule. I am quite careful with my medical experiences here in DC/MD/VA, since I come from major cities like NY and LA that have excellent quality care. I do see that the care in the DMV can, at times, be substandard in comparison that the care I am used to. However, I have had really positive experiences so far with Capital Digestive Care. My doctor is Dr. Cohen and I feel safe with her. My coworker has another doctor at the practice and also says they are excellent. I have had a few procedures at the Endoscopy Center and the nurses, anesthesiologist, and staff were extremely kind, patient, helpful, and informative both times I was there. I did not contract any illnesses from unsanitary conditions, which is also important to share since I feel like a lot of the health facilities in DC region seem dirty compared to LA/NYC, to be honest. The only negative comment I have is that a few years ago, there was someone in the phone system who seemed relatively uncaring and it was frustrating getting ahold of anyone but that hasn't been my experience in my recent communications whatsoever. Everyone has been really nice, helpful, and accessible. I'm grateful because I feel like the standard of care is subpar in Washington, DC but that just hasn't been my experience with Cap. Digestive Care in Friendship Heights. My friend had a colonoscopy at the one in the city, though, and contracted RSV from another patient, so I'll not be going to that location. However, I've found this location's staff to be excellent and current facilities to be clean. I was also told they'll soon be moving to a new facility being built, which likely improves the ability to keep the facilities clean/sanitary and more accessible. I can't think of anything else that has been negative, so I personally recommend Cap. Digestive Care in Friendship Heights. read more

When I re-read my review and reflected on my positive experiences with GI doctors in California, I felt my original review of 3 stars was too generous. Dr. Bolen had ZERO interest in me as a person and had NO personality or bedside manner. He was rude at my follow up appointments by not giving me time to ask questions and disregarded my complaints with the medication he prescribed. I absolutely got the impression that he is burnt out and needs to retire. I went ahead with the colonoscopy and upper endoscopy he recommended because I was in pain, didn't get answers from other tests (labs, ultrasound, CT) and I was 23 and didn't have much experience with doctors. Had I sensed that he didn't care about me as a person, I would have pursued a second opinion from a doctor who had enough empathy and compassion to listen to me. I have been to many doctors and there's nothing worse than not feeling like I matter to the doctor. Although I did have a decent experience with Dr. Kirk in the Chevy chase office, I don't have a lot to say about her since I only saw her 2-3 times. Were I to move back to DC, I would go to a smaller GI practice where the doctor cares about me as a person and not just my symptoms. When the same GI issues occurred several years later, my then PCP referred me to a great GI doc who was knowledgeable, patient, responsive, caring, and funny. I just switched to a new GI practice due to moving but so far the providers seem good. While I haven't had the same experiences with the staff as other reviewers, they did seem a bit robotic and didn't seem to enjoy their job. To conclude, the low rating is 100% concerning Dr. Bolen and I specifically would avoid him at all costs. read more

Believe the reviews. They won't book an appointment if you can't confirm you have insurance. It doesn't matter how long you've been with. It doesn't matter what condition you've had. It doesn't matter if you have waited over a year to see someone because of a pandemic. They'll say they'll call back but it could take weeks and they expect you to DROP EVERYTHING for THEM. But they won't relax their pixies for you. Must be nice to be the only game in town. read more

Too bad, because this monopolized practice could have been DC's very best, but greed has unfortunately corrupted their mission. Sadly it appears that even the best doctors at this practice (and there are a few) have also been taken over by the tons of money that flow through this beltway factory on a daily basis. This practice is ABSOLUTELY negligent. They will leave you for DEAD. They do not take your symptoms, issues, or concerns seriously. For someone who has battled gastro disease for nearly 20 years, this is not how you provide quality care and support to patients with chronic pain and illness. Dr. Koff is my physician, and his attention to my medical needs has been piss poor at best. I just had my second appointment with Amy Stewart (NP at Capital Digestive Care in DC) and she is amazing!! Such a calming presence with measured approach, friendly and easy to chat to. Explains everything well and if you have follow up questions she doesn't mind if you message via their online system. and she gets right back if you have questions! The treatment I have received here as been good. I recommend their care to my friends. The scheduler I had an encounter with was stressful. I called at 11:15AM on 5/17/2019 to schedule a sick appointment. She had poor communication skills and introduced sarcasm into the conversation when I was seeking information about the resources that Capitol Digestive Care has. I am sick and wanted to know if there was a sick line that I could call. The next available appointment is in two weeks but my condition is urgent. She mocked me and when I asked if there was a NP or a RN that I could talk with to get further advice about the next steps, she told me, "I already said I could send them a note. Would you like me to not send them a note?" Phone behavior like this is very stressful, especially when you are calling a medical facility in need of help. I do not feel well. I am missing work because of my condition, and to have a scheduler be sarcastic, rude, and not compassionate, it creates a barrier to accessing care. I would hope in the future, schedulers could have training on phone etiquette, a list of answers for common questions like, "is there a sick line or a sick NP/RN on call," and overall training to understand that a person is typically calling for sick appointments when they're not in the best of shape. read more

Procedure was supposed to be on a Friday at 3pm, hard to believe was for legit reasons. Barely even apologized, totally disorganized practice. Never going back! read more

The doctors are great but sadly their billing is very messed up and will cause you so much stress! Both my husband and I had issues where we needed endoscopies done. They work with the Ambulatory Endoscopy Center where they will collect an upfront payment before the procedure. Then they will only apply that payment to the center cost and nothing else. So you have to jump through hoops to try to get them to refund you so you can pay the other bills for the procedure. Then when you're waiting for your money to come back so you can pay your other bill Capital Digest will contact you incessantly to pay them and will send you to collections. If you're going to use a company for your procedures you could surely have better coordination than this. We will not be using them in the future which is sad bc the doctors we saw were great. The doctors should consider moving to a different practice b/c they are going to lose patients over this! read more
