Just got back from the store where I purchased a beautiful print. When I was paying I asked the owner how and where she sources her items for her store. I like to practice ethical consumerism and I like to support local businesses that practice fair trade standards and ethical capitalism. She was rude and cold towards me, not fully answering my question. She said something about how items were hand painted. My friend noticed she was rude to me, but maybe she was having a bad day? Anyways - I saw the reviews, and would just like to co-sign the poor customer service from the owner. The shop is beautiful but I will not be supporting this store or owner again. read more

The star is worthless First time visiting this store today and was greeted w little to no acknowledgement. We looked around and the woman behind the counter was chatting to everyone very friendly and happily. Then I got in like to pick up item that I paid for via phone and her reaction to me was appalling. My friend was w me and he immediately noticed her tone w me from the other white folks she was previously speaking w. I compliment her store, it took her like few mins to respond "thanks"! When it was his turn, the smile and tone were higher friendly engaging. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. Very rude salesperson. I went in to purchase an item. I was inspecting the item and she told me to put it back because it's not necessary for me to do that. If I am interested in purchasing something, I definitely want to inspect it. I did purchase the item as it was the perfect Christmas gift for someone but I will never go back nor will I recommend this store. read more

Poor customer service. I purchased a small tote bag less than a month ago and it ripped along the zipper. I went back to the store for an exchange. I was given a coward's excuse by the owner Beth who claimed she had to reach out to the vendor who distributes the product to the store. Which was a stalling tactic because she didn't want to honor the return and yet lose a good customer. Her analogy was I can't take back every return " I've had people return a glass that they broke" I don't understand the relevance of a zipper ripping vs someone dropping a glass. WHAT IS YOUR RETURN POLICY???? At the end of the day she was rude and her decision to not honor her damaged product that lasted less than a month is unacceptable. I will make sure my review goes viral. I'm appalled by her decision. Very unfair. I had to rate it in order to post zero stars is what they deserve. read more

The employees in this store give human beings a bad name. Their pretentious, demeaning attitude towards everyone who walks through the doors is mind boggling. I was so happy to leave there not having spent the thousand dollars on some ridiculous chachkis I had planned on buying for my wife. A wonderful store filled with wonderful things! From the moment that you enter the store, you feel as though you have been transported to a beautiful far away land! The store is filled with treasures from all around the world. It has the most unique and beautiful home decor selection I have ever seen, and their children's section is remarkable. Most of the items in the store are handmade, and a great deal of them are items that give back with every purchase, so that you can know that through buying things there, you are doing your part! The owner and the staff are all delightful, nice to be around, and have been extremely helpful any time that I have been in the store! Selection of imported & artisanal items is gorgeous & I think fair-priced. She was so annoyed that she had to give me information about her merchandise over the phone she actually stopped bc she just couldn't be bothered. This store is a true gem. We have been there many times. Yesterday we stopped in for small biz Saturday. The store was busy. We were promptly greeted and allowed to browse at our own pace. The staff answered all of our questions. The store was clean and well organized. Which is an amazing feat considering the variety of merchandise. I did find this shop to have wonderful treasures, I did buy several items for my home but I do have to admit that the women owners or if salespeople are stand offish and rude. Rude salesperson....went in with my 2 kids (this is Montclair folks!) and the salesperson made us feel extremely uncomfortable, as if my kids were destroying all of her merchandise. I usually buy gifts here for friends birthdays but would not feel comfortable going back, which is really too bad. I don't recommend shopping there with young children and have since realized most of their merchandise is overpriced, and can be found on the internet much cheaper. read more

In the past I have spent a lot of money in this store. After my experience today I would return every single purchase If I could. After raving about the store to my husband, we visited the store along with the rest of our family! I was prepared to spend a couple hundred dollars on a wooden bookshelf I had just convinced my husband to buy... I was so disappointed after our visit! I have never in my life been more uncomfortable! The woman at the desk neither greeted us nor responded to me when I walked in saying Hello! She followed my 11 year old around, staring her down as if she were gonna destroy the whole place. My 11yo was so fascinated with all the different items in the store & it broke my heart that I had to pull her away because of how unwelcome she was! If I could give a zero for customer service I would. My opinion to the Owner FIRE her front desk employee. Unprofessional!!!!! I bought 4 purses and 3 were a gift. Unfortunately one of the purse zipper broke with the first day given as a gift. Due to my distance to the shop I returned it back for an exchange in 2 weeks. I was not asking for the money just an exchange plus I was buying another purse. The front desk told me ok. Then she changed her mind and told me her manager was not there and she could not exchange she will call me back. I asked her to please call her manager because this was a gift and I only wanted an exchange. She called Manager and the Manager did exactly what I would do make the customer happy and give an exchange. The front desk was nasty and all this was going on with customers in the store. I told her next time you are not sure call your manager first instead making me feel uncomfortable. I owe a business too and you just lost a customer and my friends I will never refer. It sad because the store had great items. Never judge it's book by it's cover because you never know who can bring you money. PLEASE GET A NEW EMPLOYEE. SHE WILL RUIN YOUR BUSINESS OR TRAIN HER. Horrible Customer Service! My husband purchased some holiday place mats as a Christmas gifts for me. Unfortunately, they did not match the decor in our home. He and my 5 year old son went back to exchange them for something else just 10 days later. The sales person working that day 12/28/16 was extremely rude to him, which in of itself is concerning, however it was done in front of my 5 year old son. The salesperson spoke is such an arrogant and rude manner. Not only are we stuck with place mats but had to spend some time explaining to our son and answering his questions on why "that lady was not not nice". There are plenty other places that will take the 1k we used to spend in that store annually. Hopefully with this service and ridiculous exchange policy they will go out of business soon. read more

I agree with the above post. The saleswoman (maybe owner) was rude. I came in with my two kids and had an item in my hands to purchase. She impolitely told me I couldn't be in there "for obvious reasons" because my child was eating a snack bar. I left my item and did not return. There should be a decent way to speak to customers, especially those who are about to purchase. read more

and as an update, i spoke to mackenzie childs and they said they would have gladly taken them back from jafajems and replaced them with the ones i needed. they also said because they were a holiday purchase they are more lenient on exchanges and returns as they realize people are giving gifts and need a little extra time. Kudos to mackenzie childs for knowing how to run a fabulous business and be good to their customers. Shame on jafajems for being too lazy to fill out the paperwork to exchange them for me and keep me as a customer. read more

Contrary to the below posts, I had wonderful service while I was shopping today. I was able to check off most things on my holiday shopping list. Sales associate was very knowledgeable of the product and both the owner and her daughter were working the store as well. They beautifully packaged my gifts. One star is too many! I WAS a pretty regular customer of this establishment. As recent as December, I spent a good deal of money purchasing holiday presents. I returned a small item totaling $21.35. I was given a small paper receipt with the words printed "gift card credit". Today, I went to use this receipt to purchase two items (spending more than the credit). The owner, asked me for a card, I told her I was only given the paper gift card credit receipt. I explained I was never given a "card", she refused to honor my paper receipt. I told her I was a good customer; could she look up my name in her system to see I never redeemed this credit, she refused. So, for a whopping $21.35 this "Shop Small" store owner does not have the decency nor the business savvy to honor a customer. I'll see them in Small Claims Court. Go to Pink Bungalow instead, they are wonderful and I have never had a problem with returns there. read more
