From the beginning, I made it very clear that I wanted 100% communication and no misunderstandings. The salesperson assured me the entire project (windows, gutters, shutters, etc.) would take about 2-3 months. I was aware I was paying above average, but I trusted their reputation. That turned out to be a mistake. The problems started right away. I assumed measurements were taken during the initial visit, but they weren't. I had to take time off work for another appointment, and the person they sent was in and out in about 20 minutes. After that, communication completely broke down. I had to repeatedly call just to get updates. Months went by with no clear timeline for installation. Every time I spoke to someone, I got a different answer. The office staff seemed completely disorganized, and emails were confusing or contradicted each other. Eventually, I spoke with managers, and even they admitted there were mistakes and miscommunication. But nothing was actually resolved. When installation finally happened, it was poorly handled. They sent only one person to install gutters, which was inefficient and unprofessional. To make matters worse, they somehow retained my payment information and charged me without my authorization, which is extremely concerning. At one point, a manager apologized but then started mentioning that if I canceled, I could be legally responsible. That is when I completely lost confidence. It felt more like a threat than an attempt to resolve the situation--especially considering they had not fulfilled their obligations despite receiving a large deposit. They later came out to take pictures and "check" the work, but it felt like they were trying to protect themselves rather than fix the issues. I have lost an unbelievable amount of time dealing with this--taking off work, making calls, and sending emails. To this day, I still have an issue with one of the windows. I reached out again and received a response that made no sense, and I still have no real answer. Also, their "lifetime warranty" is not even through them--it's through a third party, which was never clearly explained upfront. Overall, this has been an exhausting and frustrating experience. I strongly recommend being very cautious before choosing this company and considering other options. Look for the response towards any complaints they're completely generic. They don't even give at least any kind of explanation as to why of things occurred. I would take my business elsewhere. You're gonna get robbed. They're charge you an astronomical price for something that anybody else could've done much cheaper.

Sometimes customer service is lacking in this country right now, but not with Smallwood Renovation if it isn't right they will do everything in their power to make it right. It was very time-sensitive as I had guests coming from out of town but they made it happen. Their reliability, communication, honesty, efficiency was completely amazing and I will use them for everything I need done in my property going forward. By mid March I still did not have a quote/idea on how much addition would cost...not even a ballpark. I was the one that kept calling/checking in to get status update. Needless to say I decided to end discussion. The new company starts work next week. Poor customer service/communication cost this company in excess of $150k of work. Another company is starting work next week. The only reason that I'm posting this is that I'm looking for additional work to be done and realize how much I depend on/look at reviews.

All the workers we dealt with were pleasant and relatively competent. The reason I would not recommend Coastal Contracting is primarily due to the lack of follow through with their one year warranty on materials. Our addition has been completed for about 9 months at this point, and we have had 3 distinct issues come up. Twice the HVAC has failed, and once the shower plumbing was malfunctioning. The first time the HVAC failed was right before the ice storm of early 2026, and we called the installing company to arrange service. They came out promptly and fixed the HVAC (faulty part, but we now had heat!) but we were told that we had to pay out of pocket for repairs since we did not first contact Coastal in writing. Ok. It then failed a second time right before the heat wave of July 4th weekend, so we contacted Coastal. We did get a personal email back after business hours saying that they would contact us after the weekend, which after 2 business days we have not heard from them. Again we did some repairs on our own. The plumbing issue happened between the two HVAC issues, so I was wise to submit my request for service in writing and followed up with a phone call, during which I was assured I would hear back...which I never did. It is just disappointing. Also disappointing were the many mis-ordered parts and vanity that delayed our project, the cut corners that we had to be vigilant about inspecting, and the surprise few thousand dollar increase in fee for a plumbing issue they did not see when they were quoting us. They admitted they didn't look under the house as they should have (I thought we were paying for their expertise?), but assured us that we could be happy that we were still getting a good deal. Maybe these hiccups and lack of communication after they get their check are all normal on a project of this size-I don't have any other point of comparison.

They overpromise and don't deliver. Communications were mediocre at best. We were preached to by someone who seems to think god takes more precedence on a job that they were hired for than the job itself. Furniture was moved and damaged and left out of place. Brand new wood stained floors were demolished. The wife's flowers were trampled outside around the house. Trash was left inside and outside. Equipment was left behind. New granite was chipped. The job was not prepped correctly, meaning sanding was not done in some areas, some areas were incompletely coated, runs all over the house. It's been a year and most of the doors are all peeling. New bathroom fixtures were painted over. Hand prints were left on ceilings. THEY PAINTED HEAVILY AROUND ELECTRICAL OUTLETS AND CUT OUR POWER AND LEFT THE HOUSE KNOWING IT AND LEFT US WITH A MASSIVE FIRE HAZARD AND ELECTRICAL BILL. The craziest thing isn't that after all this the same owner had the audacity to try to silence us with a document if we signed away our right to publicly write reviews. When workmanship was questioned, it was met with nothing but aggressive behavior by one of the owners. Accusations were thrown at both myself and my wife for simply asking questions. The company does nothing but make excuses for poor workmanship if you can call it that. After lots of talk with many other companies it was noted that the main reason they stay in business is government contracts with schools. Maybe they are good people who just have a lot of internal problems to work out but with this much stress and damage done to our new home they should have paid us triple what we paid them. If you have a business and like your property damaged and poor work while throwing your money away, hire them. If you value your home and belongings NEVER allow them on your property at all.
