    Wonton soup

Went to Jacky's Waterplace on a Friday night and sat at the bar. It was busy, but the energy made it fun and service held up well despite the crowd. I started with a lychee martini and it was excellent -- strong, clean, and well-balanced without being overly sweet. You could actually taste the lychee instead of just sugar. The wonton soup was a great way to start the meal. Good depth of flavor, light but satisfying, and a perfect portion. The tuna tartare was the standout for me. It's easily my favorite item on the menu so far -- rich, fresh, and really well composed. For my entrée, I ordered the tricolor, which features three varieties of fish. Each one was prepared thoughtfully and cooked well, with distinct flavors that didn't compete with each other. Overall, a really solid dinner. Great drinks, strong seafood options, and a lively bar atmosphere. I'd absolutely order the martini and tuna tartare again.

It was Waterfire night and we had family come out of town so we thought making a dinner reservation for four at Jacky's Waterplace would be a really nice treat. When I made the reservation through OpenTable, I put in a special request to sit by the window with a view of waterfire. After I checked in at the counter, the staff bought us to a window table and we had a great view of waterfire. The restaurant was busy and there were a good amount of people having dinner. Our waitress took a while to come take our order. When she did come, I asked if the Dim Sum Samples dish quantity is set and she said yes kind of rudely. We ordered the Dim Sum Samples dish and I had the Pineapple Fried Rice. The food took a long time to arrive. The Dim Sum Samples comes with 3 Shrimp Dumplings, 3 Siumai, and 3 Pork Soup Dumplings. It didn't taste freshly made, but it was okay. The Pineapple Fried Rice had Thai Style shrimp, chicken, asparagus, eggs, and diced pineapple. I was really surprised that it had no soy sauce. It tasted okay, but kind of bland and cold. Since I've been been to Jacky's Waterplace a few times before, I know their food and service is usually on point. It was really disappointing that this time did not meet my expectations. Jacky's Waterplace still offers a great view of waterfire.

Took the recommendation to try Jacky's from a friend as I was in town for another dance convention with my daughter and she had a hankering for sushi. Since the convention was a few blocks away and not really a prime food location I wasn't sure what I was going to get. And we all know bad sushi can be very bad Upon entering I realized that this was more of an upscale Japanese's cuisine sort of place and to be honest what really pleased me was the pumping AC as it must have been the hottest day of the year, maybe even millennium We were seated and drinking our ice cold beverages in moments and eating before our internal thermostat could adjust. Hurray! The sushi roll I ordered was a mango crab cucumber and avocado favorite and it was soft tender and fresh. My daughter's roll was a vegetable roll. Simple but that's as far as she will go in regards to sushi, and we were off to a good start Next up was the pork dumpling soup. This is the first time I've ever had this and I'm wondering how did I not know what was missing in my life? I'm not joking when I say that must have been the tastiest dish I've ever had (and my grandfather was a professional chef in NYC). I figured out pretty quickly how to eat the dumpling and get the soup hiding inside without burning or hurting myself. (Proud moment lol). It was just the right amount of chicken broth and not too salty at all. I can't rave enough about this dish. The portion sizes were generous the dough just chewy enough and steamed to perfection so as not to be either over or under cooked. And the pork flavor was the perfect combination as to add to the overall balance. Really wonderful. My daughter's main course consisted of the noodles and chicken and I ordered steak with Asian rice. The steak was buttery soft and tender and grilled to the perfect medium with just a hint of soy sauce so as not to battle with the natural juices of the cut. The portion size was so generous that I don't think I had one quarter of it but we took it to go and ate the following day. I'm happy to report than even on day 2 the meal was still outstanding and held up to the challenge I can't really say anything negative about this place and even the window sill that was held together by clear tape didn't detract from the overall experience. Yes, my OCD definitely picks up on random details, but it can't be helped.

Jacky's is in Downtown Providence with a view of the Woonasquatucket River. My wife was graduating from Brown University and I was looking for places to eat in Downtown Providence knowing that it would be pretty busy on graduation weekend. I was booked the table weeks in advance on OpenTable which was pretty convienient. Jacky's was a little bit of a walk but walkable from the Brown campus. The restaurant has valet, I didn't notice how much they charged, but we parked at a nearby lot using Spothero. The restaurant is a big with a bar area and a main dining hall area. Our party got there early and we asked if we could get seated earlier. They had space for our party of six in the bar area which was pretty comfortable even as the bar area was getting busier. Jacky's has Chinese and Japanese inspired menu. We ordered a bunch of the Chinese items. A friend of our's has a glutten allergy and the server was able to help us identify glutten free items. We were pleasantly suprised with that the Chinese dishes were tasty and pretty authentic. The meal came out quickly. I also had some of their coffee-inspired cocktails which weren't too strong and were pretty tasty.

Jacky's was a 4 star experience sullied at the end by an older waitress who damaged the experience. Our waitress Kili was awesome and very attentive. I appreciated her service. She sat us by the window and we had a great view of the Providence River as we dined in celebration of my birthday. I order a huge 20oz Scorpion Bowl drink (with light and dark rum, amaretto, brandy, triple sec and fruit juices), and it was awesome. The edamame appetizer was good but want dipped in salt the way I am used to and tend to enjoy. The crab rangoons were also tasty and had a nice dipping sauce. My wife ordered the whole fish (bass) with white rice and it was moist and delectable. I ordered brown rice and it wasn't nearly as good. I also ordered steak and scallops. The scallops were a bit tough and dry, but the steak was cooked well and pretty good. We also enjoyed crème brûlée and cheesecake to wrap up the meal. The top of the crème brûlée could have been caramelized a bit longer but it was still good. The frustrating part came just before dessert. An older waitress came and just started closing the curtains by the window where we sat. When we asked why she was closing it she said the light was bothering her customer's eyes. I suppose what we felt didn't matter. Honestly, had she simply asked us if it was okay to close it for the customer we would have said sure. But she didn't really care what we thought because apparently her customer's needs were superior to ours. That's just bad service and caused me to deduct a star.

    French Crunchy Roll (probably)

Went for an early-ish dinner, for two! We got the siu mai, salmon belly roll, northeastern tiger roll, and French crunchy roll and two cocktails (espresso and Asian pear mojito). Everything was good, with the Salmon Belly Roll being the standout. (I would recommend it!) We ate the siu mai with hot mustard as a dipping sauce (kind of like more flavorful wasabi and not as spicy). The cocktails did not taste super alcohol-y which is a win in my book, as I prefer alcoholic drinks that don't taste like alcohol, but can still mess you up. We were seated next to the window overlooking the river -- so the view was very nice. It's a pretty place, great for a special occasion, or as a casual sit down. They also do take-out. The service was fine. Overall, a solid place for sushi.

Jacky's must have had their A Team in place, because we had a great lunch here. They have an interesting, upscale vibe, beginning with a beautiful salt water aquarium in their foyer. It opens at 1pm, we arrived shortly thereafter, and were offered our choice of a table. They were not serving outside because it was a windy day. Service was excellent, water and an ice tea arrived quickly. We ordered: Salmon Sushi $8 Salmon Sashimi $8 Tricolor Roll $28 Walnut Shrimp $16 Lettuce Wraps Chicken $12 The salmon was excellent, fresh, tender and buttery. I loved the Tricolor Roll, it was a substantial portion. Speaking of portions, the Walnut Shrimp and Lettuce Wraps are appetizers, but they are very large, almost meal portions. The Walnut Shrimp was delicious, we look forward to ordering that again! We thought both the food and service was excellent on this visit, and would be delighted to dine here again.

My husband I went here while in town for a conference. We wanted fresh sushi and Jacky's did not disappoint! 10/10 would recommend. We had a reservation and were greeted and seated immediately. The service all through dinner was outstanding and the employees seemed to enjoy working there. They were friendly and made great recommendations. We ordered the tuna with jalapeno and it was so fresh and just the right amount of spice. We got 3 rolls for dinner: The Godzilla which was fire with the fried eel in top 10/10, the Northeastern Tiger which was also fabulous 10/10 and the Dynamite which has cooked tuna and was tasty. These paired well with the pomegranate martini. It's always fun to try different sushi combinations in different regions and this one is as good as they get.

This review is a compilation of three visits (2022 & 2023 & May 14, 2024) to Jacky's Waterplace in Providence, one of the restaurant's six locations in Rhode Island. Jack's gets high marks for its modern, spacious, glitzy and bright interior, with nice views overlooking the Woonsaquatucket River. One of things you might encounter is a gimmicky yet adorable robot that will bring your order to your table, and sing happy birthday. The menu is a jack of all trades but a master of none. You will find an expansive fusion offerings that include Japanese fare, Chinese, Thai and even Vietnamese dishes. But I'd stick with the Sushi and Sashimi (5 out of 10) as the cooked dishes are not executed at a very high level, and if the restaurant is busy, as it is most weekends, the food could have been sitting for a while. And if it says spicy, it's not really spicy. The "Singapore Prawns" had a balanced flavor but the chili sauce was very heavy and should have been more subtle. So go and enjoy the views, the mod interior, a colorful salt-water aquarium, and have fun with friends, and even enjoy valet parking, but don't expect the quality of the food to be anything much above average.

Food/Drinks: I love this place ! My favorite dish is their scorpion roll definitely shareable, delicious, and filling! I get it everytime I go! They also have fried rice, and wings which I can say are also as delicious! There Scorpion bowl is strong, and tasty ! I feel as though the price is more than fair! Location: This location has a beautiful view of PVD! Definitely a great place to go for a date night/family night. They have valet which takes care of the hassle to look for parking! When it comes to looks and views this location is definitely it ! Service: The service has been great the majority of times Definitely should try it out !

    Sushi/Sashimi lunch special.

Most of…read morethe Yelp photos hit the dim sum, but most of the customers in the large room stick to memory lane. The place is divided into two halves: tiny bar and three rows of booths on one side; large tables with chairs on the other side. Combo plates available both at lunch (M-F) and dinner (any time). -- Sticky Sweet Soy Garlic Sauce Wings: Wow-worthy, with the darkest sauce I've ever seen, looking like someone poured Hershey's syrup on them. Characteristics of teriyaki, soy, and garlic, and intense sweetness, but all balanced and very different, and there may even be Hershey's in there afterall. More importantly, quite delicious. The wings themselves were really good too, bringing firm to crispy skins and tender, juicy interiors. The sauce hardens over time, so eat these fast. But you'll want to anyway. Near-elite to elite. -- Rice Noodle with Shrimp: Lackluster compared to other versions I've tried. Noodle not as fresh and slippery. Sauce not as flavorful. Shrimp were good but spaced out. Below average. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (on a dinner combo): Ping pong sized/shaped balls of chicken instead of the usual fingers, but these were excellent. Very high meat to batter ratio, good crispness to the exterior, and decent tenderness inside. Sauce served in the side. No pineapples or cherries, but good contrasting flavors to the sauce and no glop. Well above average, even without the fruit. -- Pork Fried Rice (on the combo): A mixed bag, this had light grains with pleasant but subtle flavor, long-in-the-tooth dry pork nuggetry, and some onions. Flavorful or not, that rice had freshness, moistness, and bounce. All things considered, a little above average, but with potential for higher. -- Egg Roll (on the combo): Felt limp to the touch but had a delicate crispness to it. Inside, a mix of celery, cabbage, and pork, with decent flavor and a moo shi feel. Not bad. A little above average. Lots of ups and downs here, but a reluctant 4 stars thanks to the brilliance of those wings. I scouted plates on other tables on my way to the restroom and saw similar highs and lows, but more highs. Even if the potential goes unfulfilled (and I have higher hopes for the old school than the dim sim), the wings alone would bring me back.

At first glance, you don't see much from Elmwood Ave, but veer to the right and everything opens up on the left, with a parking lot in the back. Ornate statues lead you to the entrance, and once inside you are instantly greeted with bold colors and beautiful art everywhere. I wanted to take the opportunity to try some Cambodian food, so after some quick research, I opted for Beef Lok Lak, which happened to be one of the lunch combos. I chose fried rice and nime chow for my lunch options and settled back to wait for my feast. They bring you a complementary pot of hot tea, which I enjoyed. I believe it was a straightforward unsweetened black tea. Perfect for me. Before long the rangoons arrived. I literally said "wow" when the runner set my plate down. Beautiful golden brown, small bubbles visible all over the outside, promising crispy goodness. And it delivered. What I didn't expect what the slight chewiness to the wrapper that enhanced the experience. The filling was super creamy and delicious, but I prefer my rangoons with scallions as well. However, that didn't stop me from enjoying every bite. Then my lunch came. The beef was perfectly cooked, the dressing tangy and peppery. The nime chow was herby and super fresh as it should be. And the rice had this extra depth of flavor that made me think of tomato paste? A lovely addition the dish. I had a great meal here and the rangoons are definitely worth having! I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more of their menu!!

For the longest, I thought Apsara on Hope St and this Apsara were the same owners, different locations but I was fooled. They are different, so I came on a Saturday evening with my friend to give this one a try. They have a parking lot but it is small. However, there is lots of street parking around. When we walked in, every table was full and we had to wait about 20-30 minutes to be seated. Since we had time to look at the menu while we waited, we ordered right away: BBQ beef, stir fried thin egg noddle with seafood, and thai garlic chicken wings. While waiting for the food, I had ample time to take in my surroundings, including all the elegant décor around the restaurant including a lot of red and gold colors. Our food came out all together after about 20-30 minutes. The portion sizes were excellent, and all the food was still hot. The beef was cooked perfectly (for me) and cut into manageable strips. It was tender, a hint of sweet, and savory. It came with some sweet pickled shaved radish, cabbage, and carrots with cucumber. This with the meat created a contrast in texture and amplified the sweetness. There was also a clear sauce and that was also really.good. The fried noodles were delicious. They were thin so it seemed like the flavor penetrated inside the noodle. It had a good amount of seafood including big chunks of imitation crab meat, shrimp, and something else I was unfamiliar with. It also had mustard leaves; they weren't bitter, they just had a neutral green leaf flavor (maybe spinach but stronger). The chicken wing order came with about 8 wings, sitting on a bed of cabbage and topped with jalapeno and chili peppers. They were still very hot and crispy, and had a savory and a subtle umelike flavor. I wish the garlic flavor were stronger. I am excited to come back again and try something new on the menu.

We kept it light and ordered chicken chow mein, pork fried rice egg rolls and chicken fingers with brown gravy. It was our first time and we felt safe trying the basics. The egg roll was AMAZING! Very fresh, very tasty without a need to drown it in duck sauce, and most of all, it wasn't greasy. This was a great start! The rest of the food came out shortly after and was equally terrific. Come on ... how much does it cost you to actually throw in a tiny cup of hot mustard? I mean, who doesn't eat hot mustard with Chinese food? It used to be that Chinese food was a fast and cheap dinner ... a combo meal here is $18, after substitution. I want to know ... who the fuck has ever actually eaten a shitty chicken wing from a Chinese restaurant without substituting it out? Probably nobody. You eat fresh BBQ chicken wings at a tailgate, not from a dirty restaurant the size of a college dorm room. Of course they know any sane person with working taste buds will substitute nasty skimpy wings for something else ... so they include them in every combo meal knowing people will pony up the extra $1.50 - $2.50. A combo with 3 crab rangoon, 3 chicken fingers (substituted for wings) and an egg roll now costs almost $20. The quality here is on par with a mall food court ... which is to say, not great. Dry AF fried rice with fatty cubes of pork which have the consistency and taste of a pencil eraser. The rice was almost chewy it was so dry amd barely tasted like pencil shavings it was so bland. The crab rangoon was decent ... filled with fake cream cheese and almost no crab. If you are drunk, it's fine and filling. Nothing you couldn't throw in an air fryer from a frozen box. The chicken fingers were okay. Likeky frozen a year ago and thrown into a deep fat frier hours before you ordered and kept under a heat lamp. If you are drunk or high, you'll leave a 4/5 star review. If you are unfortunately sober when you eat this, it will remind you of the dsys you'd scrape your lawn mowing money together and splurge on Chinese food from the mall food court when you were in middle school. Overall, this is buffet food served as fresh made. The fact that everything had almost zero taste ... they better start putting hot mustard and soy sauce in orders unless that want continued 2/3 stars. Bottom line ... I was hoping for good old fashioned American style strip mall Chinese food. What I got ... sucked.

It tasted like one of those instant pho. Horrible! Honestly, as I was eating it, I was getting mad at how bad the food was. And for that price, I am just disappointed. I got no complaints about server or the person taking the order! They were fine but the food was just horrible!

September 2020, I went with two other people to give Red Ginger another try. Third visit since…read morethe new management took ownership of the restaurant. These were my impressions: - Red Ginger had a nice list of Authentic Chinese dishes before, not now. - The new waitstaff and lady at the front are not very friendly nor knowledgeable. I asked for something regarding the menu and none of them knew the answer. They had to go inside the kitchen to ask the chef and it took like 5 full minutes for this.... - The scallion pancakes had no scallion taste whatsover. Usually they come with a soy sauce dipping sauce, they are now giving you DUCK sauce for dipping sauce. - The Fish with Ginger and scallions does not come in a clay pot anymore, there's almost no ginger, 90% scallions. Taste was not as good as before either. - Pan fried noodles with roast pork was ok, but the pork was dry and bland. Not very good tasting. Very disappointed and that was probably my last visit. They had close to a year to keep the quality of the former food and kitchen and it is now focused on standard American Chinese fare, not Authentic.
