I will preface this review by saying the town of Marietta, PA is one of the most idyllic towns I…read morehave been to in the US. It is a river town and is a charming place to stay if you want to visit the area attractions in Lancaster, Lititz, or York. The Ascot House was built in 1800 and has been lovingly renovated by Wendy. Wendy is the best b&b host I have ever encountered and I love her British accent and stories. We were greeted as soon as we arrived and were shown to our room (the Essex). The Essex room is upstairs and the entrance is outside, but you have your own private porch which is great. It is also convenient if you have dogs as we did, because you can walk them or go into the backyard without going through the main house. Wendy is truly the most pet friendly b&b I have ever been to as well, and made sure the dogs had a water bowl on the porch soon after we arrived. She will also pet sit for you if need be for a reasonable rate. We promptly joined another couple on the deck for wine and cheese and had a great time talking to them and Wendy. There are two taverns in town that are in close walking distance, McLeary's and Shanks Tavern. Both have live music, but McLearys is larger and open on Saturday unlike Shanks. We had a great time exploring the town of Lititz on the Saturday and toured the PA Wolf Sanctuary which I highly recommend. Wendy is glad to provide any recommendations you need and we enjoyed the restaurant she recommended in Lititz. Wilbur's Chocolate Company from 1884 is also located in Lititz. The dining room is very formal and decorated in a beautiful manner. We were treated to many courses at breakfast - one morning we had a blueberry cake, fruit, and eggs and bacon, and the next morning we had yogurt and fruit, apple turnover, and waffles with true clotted cream. You can also get your own pot of tea which is a nice touch. You should not need lunch after eating breakfast here. The Lancaster area is very quiet on Sunday so you might have to venture farther for attractions that are open. Our favorite activities were just walking around the town of Marietta and looking at the beautiful 19th century homes, especially along the railroad tracks. They have a Candlelight Tour of some of the old homes every first Sunday in December and we have already booked to go back to the Ascot House because it was truly that special. The Susquehanna is a beautiful river and is located just behind the railroad tracks. Yes, you can hear the trains go by in the middle of the night so I would recommend ear plugs or taking some Benadryl. I wouldn't let that deter you from visiting this b&b which is located in one of the cutest small towns you can think of. There are also lots of wineries in the area that I want to try next time we return to the area. Make sure you check out the Chickie's Rock hike which is very easy and has a great view of the Susquehanna.

We loved hanging out with them in the kitchen, eating breakfast made to order, and having great conversation! We felt like we were visiting our favorite relatives)))) Even though we gave it 5 stars, I must mention couple of cons. 1. The carpet in the bathroom. I don't like carpets anywhere, let alone in the bathroom. For various reasons it's unsanitary, allot easier to clean tile and hardwood floor, than carpet. 2. The train makes horrible noise, it honks for a long time in the middle of the night which is really disturbing. However, with windows closed you can't hear a thing. 3. Mattresses would need to be updated to something firmer and more modern and orthopedic. But I am sure,in time all will be improved and updated. Thank you, guys, again for making our stay so pleasant !

Ellen sent very detailed instructions through email well before our check in time that detailed everything we needed to know. When we walked in, there were delicious homemade gluten free pecan squares waiting (Ellen asks for specific dietary restrictions when booking and she obviously takes them to heart!). The Sullivan suite is a great size with a comfy queen bed and sitting room. We loved the old furniture pieces and the overall antique feel of the whole house. Before checkout, Ellen made a wonderful homemade breakfast. It was exactly what we needed for a relaxing weekend! We will definitely keep The Wilderness in mind for future getaways.

One of our party has celiac disease, and Ellen was gracious enough to supply not only gluten-free breakfast options, but also to bake up some gluten-free peanut butter cookies as one of her afternoon treats. Cat lovers will be pleased to make the acquaintance of the sociable household cats. People allergic to cats will be pleased to know that none of the cats are allowed into the private rooms. One of our party is allergic to cats, and had no significant trouble from cat dander. (However, pollen was plentiful in the region, so be aware of environmental problems.) My favorite part of the inn was the screened back porch, providing sunshine, fresh air, and plenty of bird watching opportunities with three separate feeders around the porch. So peaceful and pleasant! I highly recommend The Wilderness.

Where do I even begin?! Well, sit back, get a cuppa and relax - this is going to take some time!…read moreOctober 1st-October 5th - the weekend of my daughter's long-awaited wedding. We took over. Every room. At first, everyone was "omg - we're all a minimum of 3.5 hours away - WHY!!!" As Mother of the Bride, I had a lot of work on this wedding, and Connie was my first contact here. She made everything perfect from the onset. My husband and I visited about 3 weeks before the big day to lock down decorations with Connie in the amazing barn. She made us feel welcome & was so incredibly helpful. We left with a feeling of control, where before I was just frazzled. I knew she understood my vision for the decorations and would do everything she could to make it happen. The house itself is a magical place with rooms tucked through this door, past the games, to up one of the two staircases, to behind that door off the parlor, to down the stairs through the solarium! Tea and coffee are always available, along with lemonade and water. They offer a variety of teas and coffee pods for all flavor lovers, including decaf. From this room we open to the grand solarium. Completely surrounded by the 2nd-story deck and porch with an outdoor fireplace! Big windows allow for streaming sunlight all day - it sparkles! Tables set here are for the 100% delicious breakfasts Sally whips up in the kitchen! The deck/porch off this room lent itself to the cocktail hour for the rehearsal dinner, where everyone had the most fun petting some of the many cats that live on the property! The stairs leading down from the solarium held two more rooms. Anna's Garden room. The other is Houghtelin Hideaway Room - wow! This was our room. While not technically an "old" part of the house structure, it oozed aged refinement. A large king bed was the highlight with the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept in! I seriously need to know what it was - I peeked under the sheets and did see a foam topper, but that couldn't be the whole secret! A big 1920s oak 'set-back" dresser gave ample room to put our clothes away. smart lamps on either side of the bed lent some modern convenience with USB ports, plugs, and such. A beautiful vanity sat as a use for either a desk or a vanity with a large mirror over. There is also a bench with a large mirror over - plenty of "getting ready" mirrors. A closet with overhead light helped to hold out garments, bags, with hooks set extra high for gowns and such. The other side of the room held a huge leather sofa that you just sink into! Chairs and tables allow this area to be a nice conversation nook. The bathroom was a masterpiece in itself! A huge walk-in stone shower with both a hand-held wall-mounted spray as well as an overhead rain shower head. They also supply shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel in a wall-mounted dispenser. The enormous soaking tub was well used by myself three times! The vanity was well lit with so much room for things underneath with open shelves. A door out of the room at back led to a small patio area with a table and chairs and a path that leads directly to the wedding garden. Everyone there did everything possible to make my daughter's wedding weekend a magical event, and I truly hope we didn't overwhelm them too much! Right to the moment we pulled out on Sunday morning, watching the house fade in the mirrors behinds us - we knew we would be back again and again. This place felt like home. And one last - if you are holding an even there is none better than Connie to help you! She is an amazing, helpful, joy-filled, exuberant, AWESOMEDANCER, of an event coordinator!!

My son and I stayed in the French room and I had a ball trying on all of the hats, which the proprietor sprays after each visitor. The decor was so detailed, authentic, and so incredible I could've spent the entire weekend in the room and still wished for more. Joanna caters to your every whim and personally serves a delicious breakfast to your room with hot coffee proceeding it, keeping the same theme as the room. Now I can honestly say I have been to Paris and I'll bet it's better than the real thing! We will certainly be going back for many symphonies in the future and can't wait to see the next adventurous room. It's located a few blocks away for the hustle and bustle of downtown where the bars, restaurants and such are. Did have our own parking space, so we just drove the few minutes to those areas. We chose the Swiss Chalet room...it's on the fourth floor so it was like climbing the alps to get there lol. But once there the room is enormous! Beautifully decorated with a cabin feel and some kitchy decorations...like "Birdy". Very soft bed, ac, TV...all good. Shower could have had some more power for my taste, but bathroom was clean and bright. Breakfast for the few days was good. Cinnamon raisin French toast was the best. Egg souffles, sausage links, strawberry French toast over the two days we were there. The garden area was nice, and there is a indoor shared space on the 3rd floor. Met some other guests and had an enjoyable, relaxed time. Joanne the inn keeper was a delight and accommodating.
