Jack seems like a really nice, talented guy who has been in business a long time in the same location. I won't begrudge him that. However...I have never used him until recently and I don't think I ever will again. His prices are through the roof expensive. I brought him three brand new pairs of pants to be tailored and yes, when he was finished the pants fit well but so have other pants I've had tailored by other tailors I've gone to in the area for much, much lower prices. I had a pair of $20 pants tapered and now they are $105 pants (that's $85 for the work for those of you who aren't very good at math :o) I also had another pair of pants taken in at the waist and all he did was pinch the fabric at the belt loops (on either side) and throw a couple stitches down to hold the pinched fabric in place. I'll admit it's a nifty trick to avoid actually taking in the pants like any other tailor would do but the stitches already look like they are ready to fall out. That was $30 for what looks to me like no more than 10 minutes worth of work for an experienced tailor. Finally I had a pair of pants hemmed (something any tailor or grandmother will do for around $15) yet old Jack charged $30. Jack talks a good game and takes the time to get to know you a little when you walk in which is nice but...he's just too expensive. Jack is awesome! My boyfriend and I have been going to Jack's for about 2 years now. He does an impeccable job with suits (worth thousands of dollars) and he knows how the suit should fit and what is an appropriate length. Both of us are in the legal industry and therefore its important to have perfect work done which I think Jack does. I think the customer service that Jack provides is also worth the price. He never pushes alterations or suggestions on you and most of the time will ask you to think about it before you really want to do it. I also bring all my jeans here. Though someone mentioned that it was expensive. The prices may seem high to some of you yelpers, but anywhere else in the city they will charge you the same fees. Two weeks ago, I found out that the suit I had bought for my wedding didn't fit - I had been sold the wrong suit by a series of shady salespeople. I only found this out when I brought the suit to Jack for some alterations. He was honest enough to tell me that no matter what alterations he made - and no matter how much I spent for them - the suit would never look as good on me as a suit that actually fits. I took the suit back, brought a different suit to Jack, and he altered the second suit beautifully - I've never looked so stylish! Some patrons of Jack's seem annoyed that he refuses work, but I see it as a badge of honor: the man doesn't want to produce shoddy work, and cares less about making a quick buck than he cares about helping people look good in their clothes. This was my first experience with a tailor, and let me tell you, Jack has exceeded my expectations. I came in with a department store suit jacket that desperately needed to be tailored. The only problem is that this is my first time dealing with suits and I did not know what needed to be done in order for my generic suit to look good. In came Jack. He was very responsive to my lack of knowledge and explained to me everything that he wanted to have done on the jacket and what each improvement would do to the overall look of the jacket. He was very helpful in educating me and made me feel very comfortable. Like other reviewers have said, Jack is a little pricier, but he will do an absolutely phenomenal job when it comes to your garments. I will definitely come back to him again, even if it is just advice on what to buy. As someone who is very picky about how clothing should fit, I've been to many tailors in the past. Jack is a tailor who operates in the happy medium of offering his advice and expertise on how a garment drapes and looks, but is also willing to accommodate my own personal vision for what I think should happen. He does this, most importantly, without a hint of condescension, surprise, or derision (as a few other tailors whom I've visited have done). He has a keen eye for detail, and his work is exacting. It should be noted, as other reviewers have done, that he is pricey (he's also cash only!). However, he's also incredibly honest about his prices (in the sense that he will fully recommend or endorse when something might not be worth the price of tailoring), and the nature and quality of his work necessitates a high degree of skill and time. Update: Had to take away a star, as some things cropped up: 1.) He claimed to know my size and didn't pin me on a shirt I wanted tapered in, as I think he might have been trying to impress a potential customer. He subsequently aggressively tapered the arms on the shirt (which I didn't ask for), which rendered the garment unwearable. He did fix this when I brought it to his attention. . 2.) Many, if not most of the hems he did on my pants and trousers have quickly fallen out or into disrepair. All other normalized tailoring jobs have held fast. read more

Needed to get my suit tailored for my wedding. Googled and yelped tailors around Boston. Jack comes highly reviewed. And there is good reason. He makes you feel good as he talks thru his observations of what he plans to do to make your suit better. My pants were too long, a lot of extra fabric in the butt area, he tapered them. The jacket; he made sure to take out the loose fabric in the arms, made it so that there is no gap between the collar of the shirt and the jacket. He shortened my shirt slightly. He takes his time explaining and comes at a price. $285 to tailor a suit. Thats how much my suit costs at Macy's. Haha. But now my suit fits way better. I look good. I feel good. Well worth. I am convinced Jack is one racist, mean and arrogant tailor. Most people out here sign his high praises. Dont' be fooled! Went is on a Thursday hoping to have a DKNY suit altered. Walk in and he has a grumpy, mean look on his face upon seeing me. Probably my brown skin?! Tell him what I needed done and he "claims" he's out on vacation for the next two weeks. And that I should go down the road to Walden cleaners. Our conversation lasted all of 30 seconds. This after me driving over 30 minutes to get to his store. Drove past his store numerous times the next two weeks. Found it open and lit up every time. Clearly he does not like working with folks of a certain race probably? Can't think of any other reason why given how much he's liked on this site. read more

I really wish I could be more positive, but reviews are only helpful if they are honest. Briefly: the work was wildly overpriced, of poor quality, and with glaring mistakes. Worst of all he did not stand behind his work and when politely asked if he could make adjustments/corrections, he became unpleasant. To be fair, he wasn't sure he could do the job so while I do not hold him responsible for the way it turned out fitwise, I do feel that the lack of a fitting, shoddy workmanship, and refusal to make any adjustments or fix shoddy workmanship are unacceptable for a professional. Although there are numerous positive reviews on yelp, you may wish to read the negative reviews as well. It will become apparent that they were not written by people with an axe to grind, but like me, people who had a very negative experience. Perhaps he does a better job for long time customers or for easy alterations? The reviews for Jack's work on men's style blogs are not as favorable and may be more relevant for those whose standards for tailoring are higher, and who are having suits/jackets/tailored clothing altered for excellent fit and finish work. PRICING: As others have noticed, his pricing practices are shady. Instead of a transparent alterations price list (or even just stating his price after evaluating the job), he puts the customer on the spot and says "what do you think this will cost?" . When he asked me, I was honest enough to tell him what a "Best of Boston" tailor estimated for the work, and he promptly quoted me twice the price (several hundred dollars). That should have been a huge red flag but I agreed, thinking the quality would be superb. Sadly, it was not a situation in which "you get what you pay for." FIT: basically the alterations made the fit worse--the jacket ended up with football shoulders and deep folds at the shoulder because he did not take blades in at the back and it was far too tight in other places. A fitting would have made all the difference, especially since he was in doubt about how to proceed. POOR QUALITY WORKMANSHIP: An attached belt was cut so short that it no longer closed normally and pulled creating a deep and very obvious fold on one side. In addition, it had been reattached unevenly so that it was higher on one side than the other. The jacket hem was no longer attached but flopped down behind the jacket. He claimed that it came that way (it didn't). Ditto for the lining, which came back unattached. ATTITUDE/PROFESSIONALISM: When I asked politely that he look at the fit and see if adjustments could be made he simply refused to look and stated curtly that he was not going to do anything further. I assume that he got in over his head and did not have the grace and humility to acknowledge that the alterations had gone wrong and needed additional work. While he was initially friendly he became unpleasant when I returned to see if we could rectify the mistakes. Sadly, I cannot recommend this tailor, his workmanship, his business practices or his behavior. There are better tailors, at better prices, who will stand behind their work and treat one courteously. Anyone can make a mistake--it is the willingness to fix things when they go wrong that makes all the difference. read more

Based on the testimonials about his abilities, I decided to try Jack for a really nice blazer I had that was far too billowy, since I'm a slender guy. I went in thinking I knew what alterations I wanted, but I was sorely mistaken. He, very courteously, explained the bad things that would happen if he just did the quick things I wanted, and showed it by placing needles in the piece. He then suggested some alternative alterations, and showed the effect, which was so much better! He was not pushy at all, leaving the decision up to me, but I felt like I could sense his expertise, and trusted his judgement. Now, the result wasn't cheap, but it was beautiful! After visiting Jack's earlier today, I had to write a quick review of his business. I live in Wayland, work in Waltham and make the effort to drive to Cambridge for "my" tailor Jack. This start 18 years ago when I lived in the South End and bought a Tuxedo from Keezers in Cambridge. Mind you, I bought this Tuxedo on a Thursday in advance of a Saturday night formal event. I was in a big time bind, I needed alterations in less than 48 hrs. Well, Jack came through for me and did a wonderful job on that Tuxedo. I promised myself that I would always use Jack for any of my alterations. So for the last 18 years, I make an effort to go to Jack. I tell this story because today I found myself making the trek to Cambridge to have two pairs of pants shortened. Really nothing that complex. My wife thought I was crazy to drive all the way into Cambridge for something that could be done by many other tailors much closer to my home or office. Frankly, I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. Jack's craftsmanship, his precision and friendly manner really make an incredible difference. Jack is a straight up artist who has mastered his craft over the 30+ years he's been in business. I walked in with a blazer I bought during a massive online sale. Fortunately when I put it on it fit pretty well except the sleeves. I came in asking to take the sleeves up but this is where Jack's eye for tailoring kicked in. He said he'd happily just take the sleeves up but asked if I'd be willing to listen to suggestions. He pointed out a bunch of small alterations and using pins showed what the finished product would look like. I happily agreed with everything. When I came back to try the finished product I couldn't believe how good it looked. I wore it this past weekend for a wedding and I've never received so many compliments on an article of clothing. Walked in w/ my mom's peacoat from the 70's to have one of the original and rare buttons sewn back on. The owner sewed it on the spot, right in front of me and didn't charge for it. I walked out (not more than 10 feet from the establishment), went to put on the coat and the button was not there. Went right back in and he said I "must have lost it", and shrugged his shoulders. No button found on the ground between the establishment and the 10 feet I'd walked. If the button fell off within a few seconds of leaving the shop then it's really a reflection of his craftsmanship. read more

Jack is a Cambridge gem. He likes to get to know his customers so the next time you come back, he can greet you by name. He is always friendly and honest: if he can't do a job, he will be up front about it, and if he knows someone who can, he will send you their way. I recently took a floor-length leather duster to him to have the lining extended, as the original lining only went down to my waist. This lack of lining meant I was getting leather dust on my pants, which is a pain to remove. He had to strike a tricky balance between protecting my pants and making sure the lining didn't show from the split in the back of the duster, and he definitely rose to the challenge. When I picked up the duster, it was *almost* ready: he wanted me to try it on and walk around in it before giving it to me so that he could make a couple of adjustments, which he did right in front of me with a fast and practiced hand. Bottom line is that I'm thrilled that my duster will no longer be messing up my pants. In the past, I've had him hem pants, as well as clean the leather-dusted pants I mentioned; he even provided an empty box as a reference for a good do-it-yourself fuzz-ball remover. He takes every job seriously, giving it full consideration no matter how simple it might be. If you need it done fast, he gets it done. He'll walk you through the process, educating you to things you probably didn't realize before. Some people might be put off by Jack because he provides something we're not used to these days: actual service. He's a master at his craft, and his goal is to make sure he takes care of your tailoring needs, even if you aren't quite sure what those are when you walk in. I've brought him numerous articles, and before we've done any work, we've always discussed if the work is worth it or not. I've always appreciated this, because I had things done by other tailors that did exactly what I asked, when I didn't know what I was asking for. Jack is a world-class tailor. I recently had him alter two expensive suits and I am stunned by the quality of the work. It's really remarkable what he was able to do, and I am so glad that I went to him. I am planning to take two more suits to him next week. I must admit that I am surprised by the few negative reviews, to the point that I feel it is worth saying something for other people to consider. First, to the cost. Can you find a cheaper tailor? Maybe. But you get what you pay for, and what you get with Jack is the very best. If you're looking for quality and value, he's your guy. If you decide to bring in a $20 pair of jeans and are shocked to learn that the price to alter them doesn't drop just because you paid $20 instead of $100 for the jeans -- because, after all, the work is the work -- I don't know what to tell you. Second, to the issue of not quoting a price on the phone. That happened to me too, but I wasn't bothered by it. Jack's point was that he couldn't give me an honest price until he knew what work had to be done. I can respect that. In my case, it was a lot of work and there's no way that he would have been able to give me an accurate estimate over the phone. Perhaps that bothers some people, but for me I would have been more frustrated if I was quoted one thing and then the number changed once I got there. But that's just me. Finally, to the person who was upset that Jack wouldn't alter his suits. I don't know what to tell you -- Jack was delightful to work with. I can't remember the last time someone took so much time and effort to get to know me and to show me every little detail of what he was doing and, when it was done, what he did. I will say he did tell me upfront that if he didn't think something needed to be done, or if he felt he couldn't do what I was expecting, he would tell me and that would be that. He said agreeing to work when he knew that the customer would not be happy with the outcome was not a good business practice. Make sense to me. In a short period of time, he explained exactly what he would do, including changes that were more/less important and some of which were suggested as optional. So I asked my friend where he bought his suit and his response was "cheap suit, I just have a good tailor", and that's when I was referred to Jack. I bought a suit at Brooks Brothers that I liked, but didn't love. Jack hemmed the pants - and added belt loops - extra large belt loops per my request. Now the suit looks great on me and I'm excited to wear it. His turnaround time was quick, and the price was fair. I showed up with several more pairs of pants a few days later that needed hemming. I haven't gone to pick them up yet, but I was impressed that when I asked if he could adjust the thighs on a pair of pants I had that were a little small, he didn't say yes, but instead had a look at the inside of the pants, and showed me that there wasn't enough extra fabric to do a good job. I can NOT recommend that you go to Jack, if you want a professional experience with men's suit and coat alterations. I cannot speak to altering other items. I've had three experiences with Jack now for men's suits and a men's coat. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I cannot. QUICK AND DIRTY Jack has a good eye for suit tailoring and can make a suit look like it's worth a million bucks -- hence, TWO STARS. However, I cannot speak well for his professionalism, business practices, temperamental attitude, and obscure and high pricing practices. The quality of the actual sewing handywork is lacking in attentiveness to detail and quality. Jack is a salesperson and will always try to upsell you alterations, which you do not really need. So, if you are not fashion savvy, you might get eaten alive and pay for things you don't really need or want. You need to know when to say "no" to Jack. Jack will not quote you a price over the phone and nowhere in the store is there a price listing. If you start talking price before you agree for him to do the job, he will treat you rudely and literally "show you the door." CASH ONLY. DETAILS 1. In 2011 timeframe, I had a $200 Kenneth Cole suit taken in (bought from Wrentham). This was the first time I've actually had a suit tailored, so I did not know what to expect, how expensive it would be, and how it would look in the end. The outcome was a very sharp, European style, trim fit suit. He pulled the suit jacket up in terms of the lapel/shoulders, tapered the arms, tapered the sides, and he might've also shortened the arms (it was 3 years ago, so I do not remember clearly). For the pants, he accentuated my ass, and made it tighter around the crotch, brought in the waist, and shortened the length. The look of the suit was amazing, and I've received many compliments on it. Granted, the suit was a maybe a size too big on me to start, so there was a lot to be taken in, but in the end, the damage done was $200 -- yes, the tailoring cost the same price as the suit itself!! However, the pants were too tight on me to the point of uncomfort and at one point, the seam on the right upper leg where he modified had 2-inch tear. Secondly, how the bottom of the pants was taken in, if your foot accidentally catches the side of the pant when you're putting it on, you could potentially tear the sew job, which I did a couple times. These are the two points where I cannot speak well of his handy work. Through this experience, Jack was very good, quite professional 2. In January 2015, I had two Emporio Armani suits to be taken in -- these suits were not cheap and this time I purchased the right sizes and wanted nothing less than perfection from the tailoring. Given that Jack had made the suit look good last time and my commute passed by Jack's, I decided to give Jack a second shot, but this time, I would manage the issues that I had in the previous time. On a Friday afternoon, I called Jack around lunchtime to ask about pricing and if he would be available for me to come in in the afternoon. He was available and would not quote prices over the phone, and said I had to physically come in. I arrive at 1:50pm, and he greets me in quite a friendly way. He tells me to put my suit up and we start talking about what I want to have done. Then a minute into the small talk, he reveals that he has a dentist appointment to go to at 2:00pm. OK, so he tells me that he is available on the phone, but he actually isn't. He apologized for the situation, and I decide to let it go and try again another day. 3. Normal weekday in January 2015, I decide to bring in my suits again to get them fitted and tailored. I call around 5:15pm after work and ask him if he would be available in 30 minutes to see me. He said "yes." I arrive and there is a woman who he is helping. So while she is changing, I ask him about my long winter coat which I am wearing, which looks good, but could use some customized tailoring. He suggested pulling up the lappels and then tightening the arms. I personally thought the issues were that the coat itself was too long and that it was a bit wide around my waist, that made it look boxy. I ask him for pricing, and he said the "pulling up" was $45 and taking in the arms was $25. $70 for modifications that I didn't agree with? I say "no." And after that, Jack starts to treat me very coldly. I explain to him that the previous experience I had was not up to my expectations, and he quickly defends that if I have issues with his previous work, that I could bring it in and have him fix it. I suspect he becomes defensive because there is someone else in the store (or maybe it's just how he is). I change into one of the suits and he's busy doing other work, but does not pay me any attention. Without looking at the suit closely, he provides recommendations of alterations and gives extremely high pricing. I know that it's time to go. read more

(aside: that's why i hate most hair stylists - too many questions. i don't know what number guard to use or whether you should use scissors or that razor thingy - i'm a guy. with short hair. do your thing and make it look good. that's like someone asking me to write them a totally deceptive and unfair yet still legal indemnification contract and me asking how i should start it or how long it should be or what language to use. ridiculous.) anyway - i THOUGHT i just needed my pants done but i was wrong. i try on my jacket with the pinned up pants to see what it looks like and jack gives me a talk - the gist of it was that he feels like he owes his customers the best advice he can give; that they can choose what they like, but he's going to lay it out and let them make the call. he also stressed that it's very important for him to feel like i don't think he's just trying to create more business for himself by suggesting additional alterations (which, in my case is completely believable since 3 days to do a suit is kinda unreasonably short notice but he did it up). he then pinned my jacket how he'd like to alter it and i was sold. it's ASTONISHING how much better i looked. and i'm not that good looking to begin with so i gotta take what i can get. it was $158 to do everything and i have no idea if this is expensive or not since i've never had a suit tailored before but it's WELL WELL worth it in my opinion. on top of the great service, jack's an awesome guy. the two things that'll get me in your corner more than anything else are moral integrity and candor. this guy's got both. i'd recommend him to anyone. read more

Extremely sketchy store. I called to ask if they could hem pants and of course he said yes. Then, here's how the conversation went: Me: How much to hem pants? Jack: Idk i gotta look at it Me: Could you give me an approximate price for a regular pair of denim jeans Jack: i gotta look at it first Me: i'd really appreciate just a price range, or the most i'd possibly be charged to have my jeans hemmed. Could you give it your best guess for a standard pair of jeans? Jack: No. I've told you 3 times (he only told me twice). I will not tell you. Me: Sir, i really don't want to drive 10 minutes just to have to turn around. Any estimate would help. Jack then hung up.... That's not how you run a business. He was trying to lure me into the store because once i'm there I won't want to leave and search for another store. I think customer service means a lot and Jack apparently thinks otherwise. I'd be willing to pay up for customer service. But that was just outright rude and unprofessional. You won't be getting my business, Jack. read more

I can't believe all these 5 star reviews. I took a suit and a couple pairs of pants (including a pair of jeans) into Jack for alterations. He was certainly nice enough but he did a terrible job at a high price. I requested to keep the original hem on my jeans, which wasn't a problem for Jack, but within a few weeks the bottom of the jeans started detaching from the pants! There were clumps of glue everywhere. I need the sleeves shortened on my tuxedo jacket and I though he'd shorten the sleeves at the shoulder but when I went in to pick up my jacket instead of having 3 buttons at the cuff it had 2! I couldn't believe I paid 40 dollars for that! And upon closer inspection the sew job in the sleeve is coming apart. Unbelievable. read more

I'm sure he is great at tailoring as most of my friends and the reviews say. I had a really awful experience. Went there to tailor three new suits. Got there Saturday at 2.20 when his shop closes at 3.00 and he said he had to leave shortly. Since he had no time to take measurements, I asked him if he could at least keep the suits till Monday so I could come back and not have to walk another mile back and forth again. He said no, rudely dismissed my request and turned his back on me as he walked away. No level of skill justifies this rudeness towards customers. Not recommended at all. read more

a friend of a friend once told me the key to success (or, at least, his key to success): "talk yiddish, dress british." there he was macking on some princess or something from some scandinavian country, telling her all about his plane, so who am i to argue? (incidentally, he doesn't own a plane. he later told me, "no. i don't. but if need to fly her somewhere, i can rent one." the man is a genius.) i would add one more thing - if you're spending any sort of money on your suits or other fine clothing, get yourself a good tailor. go. see. jack. the man is also a genius. albeit, in a different way. i don't know jack about tailoring, but i know how a suit should fit. very few people are able to wear something off the rack. unless you're having something custom made, the mass produced numbers need to be big enough for the big guys, and small enough for the skinny guys. odds are, you are not the perfect average. i'm a skinny guy, so that usually means something has to come in. jack will carefully and fully explain your options. what he can do, what he can't do, what he recommends you do, and exactly why. even when there are other people waiting, jack will make sure you feel like you're the only customer in the shop. and he WILL remember your name. i recently took 4 suits to jack, each with slightly different issues. take this one in here, let that one out there, smooth it out someplace else. you get the idea. jack was the first tailor i've ever been to who actually began tailoring the garments while i was still wearing them. a couple of snips and pins and they looked 100 times better. he said "too many tailors just take out the chalk. why not do what you can while the customer is there, so you can get the final fit perfect?" when i went back to pick them up, they were, indeed, perfect. you don't need to spend a million dollars (or rent a plane) to look like a million, but i don't recommend you take your "2 for $199.99" k&g specials here. not knocking the threads, but, if you need the work i did, you can expect to spend about $80 per suit for the tailoring. the expense might not be worth it for a $200 suit. but, if you find something you really like, whatever it costs, and want that little nip & tuck to make it look perfect, go. see. jack. jack is very conveniently located on mass. ave. right near the porter square t station. parking is on the street or, in a pinch, in the shopping center nearby. cash or check only. no plastic. read more

Jack is the ultimate tailor-artist! I am not a regular "reviewer", but I really like this guy. He takes pride in his work and really enjoys seeing his final product before you leave. His confidence is well earned. You are in good hands when you bring your items here. A good tailor is hard to find these days so make sure to take advantage of having one of the best right in your own neighborhood. I am so happy that I can buy clothes that may not fit perfectly and can bring them here to make them all look like they were custom made for me. read more
