I'd be remiss if I didn't warn others about "Jack the Rip-Off". I'm considered the "concierge" among friends for referring just about everything from merchants such as tailors and dry cleaners to places to visit, eat, tour, etc. Buyer Beware! I went to Jack because my tailor was away on vacation and I just needed a pair of pants (without lining) to be hemmed. Not only did Jack charge $18 when my exceptional tailor (more on him later) charges $15 but my pants were too short. When I went back to have Jack lengthen the pants, he wanted to charge an additional $18 even though he took the initial measurements. Jack said that this was now my problem not his. Where do I begin with this remark?! I was shocked and frustrated and knew I needed to inform others to go elsewhere, anywhere but here! It just so happens that my tailor whom I've been using for the past three years has transformed my wardrobe and has been highly recommended to many friends, whom also use him religiously. You should check out Le Couturier House of Alterations in Central Square and ask for Dick, the owner and master tailor. His work is impeccable, customer service outstanding, and prices very reasonable. Plus, once he quotes you a price, he does whatever it takes to ensure you're happy without charging more for additional work. Bottom line - I'm not sure how Jack's received as many stars on Yelp for his inadequate service unless most of his reviewers were friends and family. I want to prevent you from paying 20% more for alterations you're not satisfied with on top of the possibility of paying Jack double to rectify his mistake. read more

why is this guy so awesome? looking at the work hes done and there really isnt a second thought. first off- hes incredibly nice and honest. brought 2 suits to him to be tailored: 1 was redone entirely, shoulders arms, length (not an easy task), sleeves, chest. 2nd one he told me to return it if i could. told me that its a cut that doesnt work on my body and itd be a waste for me to pay to get it altered . now i had a feeling about this but wanted to get some input before i did so. I went to another place before hand and they told me " no problem". this is where jack shines. he cares enough to tell you the truth regardless of him pocketing $$$ at the end of the day. this is something that you cant just replicate with other tailors. is what i paid worth it? absolutely. if you want the best tailor in boston. When I got it back, the work was beautiful--I'm getting misty at the fact that craftsmanship like this is so rare nowadays. But it's exactly what it was supposed to be, and again, beautiful. I have been a customer of Jack's since grad school 8 years ago. His work has taken me through postgrad job interviews, professional attire for work, evening wear, jeans and even a pair of leather pants, whose flared cut he brought in to a slimmer, tapered leg. I wouldn't have trusted these to anyone else frankly. He immediately knows what is off with a fit or cut and talks you through his pinning and chalking the garment to help you visualize what the new, improved look will be. He has advised when a pair of pants was just too poorly constructed to adapt, which I appreciated. Finally, Jack is a delightful person. Quick update - It seems that Jack is an expert tailor when it comes to fitting garments, but he needs to work on his sewing skills. Pretty much every garment my girlfriend and I have given him has loose stitching. I had him repair a pocket on my coat, and it pulled out a month later. I returned the coat to him, asked him to re-sew the pocket and he claimed that he hadn't repaired it the first time (not true - I wish I had saved the receipt). Foolishly, I let him repair it a second time, thinking he might do the job for free since I had already paid for it once. Nope. $20 for a quick stich, something that would take 10 minutes on the sewing machine. Jack, you're a good guy, but you gotta use stronger thread and be more gracious to your customers who have problems with your work. read more

I found Jack's Tailoring the same way you did, through Yelp. Honestly I have nothing but praise for his service and craftsmanship. Every time I come here it's like Christmas! Jack is a great guy. He runs the shop by himself and does the work himself on site. My experience, the first time I walked into his shop he asked me what kind of style I was looking and has tailored my suit according to my preference and style. As a tailor Jack still takes the time to explain he cut he plan to do as he is fitting the suit to me in the mirror. He thoroughly explains his thought process. After he finishes tailoring my suit he tells me to wear it for a few weeks and he will make any adjustments I find necessary at no charge of course. I personally have brought in a variety of suits. As a skeptic I started by bringing in my cheaper suits that I needed alterations on and now I won't bring anyone else my thousand dollar suits. Even though Nordstrom offers free tailoring, I will just take them straight to Jack because I only trust him. Personally, its like getting my haircut, you want to go to the same barber that knows your hair and you trust. In a matter of speaking, Jack is my barber. You may realize how hard that is to find. Since the first time that I stepped foot in the shop, Jack has made my experience personal, he greets me by first name and will now stay open if I call him to tell him I will be arriving a little late after work. If I could I would give Jack a 6 star rating. He's a small business owner that really takes the time to get to know his clientele and their needs. A little about Jack, I've actually asked him how he got into the tailoring business and his father was a tailor, his father's father was a tailor and his wife is also a tailor. She runs her own shop and does wedding dress alterations. You really get a sense of passion Jack has towards his work. He once told me the thing that separates a good tailor from a great tailor is having the eye and passion for the work. He loves what he does. My last review got filtered, so I'm writing a second one. Hopefully this one sticks. I'll be honest, if all you need are some jeans hemmed, there are plenty of decent tailors around Boston that can do that for you. But if you need something a little more complicated done right, I'd come here. I'm a skinny guy that doesn't really fit great into dress shirts (even slim fit ones) - the shirts always parachute out the back of my pants after I sit down and stand back up. I hate that. I told Jack this story about a year ago, and he asked me to bring one of those shirts in, to see if he could work his magic. After he took in the sides, shortened the sleeves, trimmed the width of the sleeves (so they didn't sag), and put in some darts, it was a whole new shirt. I've bought custom shirts before (from traveling tailors and online), but nothing fits as well as the one he altered for me. And so ever since, I've been bringing all my shirts here. I still do my dry cleaning at a different place that's closer to my house, but anything that needs alterations I take here (my suits, blazers, pants, etc). If you're skeptical about what a good tailor can do, just take in ONE shirt and have him alter it for you. I promise you'll get hooked (like I did) and bring in your entire wardrobe after that. And everyone on here that's complaining about him not giving estimates over the phone - he doesn't just take in the sides or shorten something and call it a day. He actually wants to make whatever you're wearing look good on you, so he needs to see it to figure out what to do. For example, some of my shirts could look trim just by taking in the sides, while others needed darts in the back. It would've been impossible for him to suggest what I needed to do to each shirt over the phone. Only two caveats: One: Cash only. Two: Sometimes you may have to wait (especially on Saturdays), because he has a ton of clients and he spends as much time as needed with each of his clients. Of course that means when it's your turn, you won't be rushed and you can have an actual conversation about what you want done with your clothes. Parking: I've always parked in the Shaw's lot next door and have never had an issue. read more

I love Jack. I've had him do repairs and hemming on several occasions, and he does beautiful work. The only reason he gets four stars instead of five is that his prices are a little on the high side. I used to go to a wonderful tailor in Newton who did comparable work for about half the price, but he had to move back to Argentina. I brought him a very difficult custom piece (a Star Trek uniform, because I dress how I want, k?) and not only was he able to size it perfectly to me, but he also fixed some inherent flaws in the uniform that would have made it decidedly less flattering if left alone. It wasn't a cheap modification, but it was absolutely worth it ... and I'll absolutely be back to see Jack again! read more

Jack is quite simply as good as it gets. I brought him two pairs of jeans for shortening and re-attachment of original cuffs, to which he masterfully completed the job. I also had him remove the elastic band from a new coat. I could not be more impressed with his skill and his professionalism. He is a gentleman and an accommodating individual, always willing to work with difficult schedules and needs. Anyone who has complained about his work should probably have had used their social skills, as apposed to an anonymous forum, and instead brought the issue up with Jack. I've brought dress pants, jeans, and khakis and each time they've come out perfect and quick. I have this decade-plus old leather jacket from Wilson's Leather. If it were twice as thick, it could be legitimate leather armor - the thing must weigh twenty pounds. Anyway, over the course of a decade the inside got all torn up and it needed a new lining. He replaced with with something promised to be really tough fabric that would last. He told me that because it was really thick leather, he wanted a few hundred bucks. Well, I REALLY like this jacket and don't see anything like it for sale these days.....so I bit the bullet and agreed. It seemed great when I first got it. It lasted until after I moved away from Cambridge; specifically, about 2-3 months. I was being very careful with it since I did not want to have to pay to reline it for another 10 years at least. Then, all of a sudden, it started coming apart at the seems where the fabric he used met itself (not at the leather) - right in the middle of my forearm, and at the armpit. I probably should have brought it back but didn't want to drive all the way over. Blah. Maybe he does good work with suits, but this was seriously disappointing. Perhaps if I can find where I saved the hand-written receipt I might drive in. read more

I've been a loyal customer of Jack for about a year and a half. I first went to Jack to get a pair of dress pants hemmed. I was impressed by Jack's attention to detail and clear desire to make the dress pants look best on me. Instead of just hemming them where I thought was right, he instead showed me a better length, to account for minor shrinkage and the different types of shoes in my closet. Point being, unlike other tailors where they just do what you tell them and never tell you if it's possible or not, Jack is different. That's why I only go to him, and have had 10+ pairs of various pants hemmed - including many pairs of selvedge raw denim jeans. A rarity to find someone who can make them look brand new in Boston! In short: Jack is well worth every penny for your tailoring needs. read more

I read all of the reviews for Jack's Tailoring and promptly went there with 3 pairs of pants to hem and some sweaters to be dry cleaned. I was confident & quite happy that he was near to where I live. I saw the few negative reviews and just assumed that the people who wrote them had much higher standards than my own. When it comes to hemming, I'm not that picky. All I really want is the legs to be even and for the length to be correct. Not so hard, right? Wrong! One pair of pants had one leg about 3/4" shorter than the other leg. So obvious that even I noticed. (So did my boyfriend who has an even lower standard on that sort of thing than I do.) The second pair was too long. The third pair, just right. But 33%? That stinks. I had him fix the first pair and he was polite etc, but he took no responsibility for it and blamed the pants. I decided not to bother with pair number two because I can wear them and probably talk my mom into hemming them at xmas. (I'm not so good at this sort of thing.) I thought this was all bad enough....and then I looked at my sweaters. Three were fine, one was not. I don't know how, but it was a solid red sweater and now it has orange streaks throughout it. Ruined. He was polite & friendly, that I can agree on, and he did fix the pair I complained about, but it is a hassle to have to return, I did not love "the blaming of the pants," and there is really nothing he could do about the sweater. What more can I say? Take your chances.....but I will never go back. read more

Before attending an international conference in Chicago, I decided to bring in one of my suits to Jack. I was absolutely blown away by the quality of his service and his level of expertise. While I was just looking to have the pants adjusted, Jack advised me on alterations that he could make to the entire suit, and I was astonished as to how much better it looked with his suggestions. In a few short days, Jack made the alterations and made sure that I was happy with the work he did. As I walked around the conference later that week, I completely felt like a million bucks, as multiple folks commented on the suit. It was obviously Jack's work that deserved the credit! Short story - stop looking and go to straight to Jack's. I've been going for 10 years and he never lets me down. This week was no exception - I got a deal on a tux that didn't really fit me but I bought it anyway. I needed a rush job and brought it to Jack to see what he could do. I dropped it off Monday (two days before New Year's Eve) and got it back Tuesday at noon. Jack hemmed the pants and let out the jacket and fixed some issues from the manufacturer. It came out perfect! The fit and quality if his work is outstanding. Not only is he an exception tailor but he took the time to understand what my objectives were gave me several options for fit and look and showed me how suits are constructed so I could do a better job buying in the future. He is also a kind and patient person - the negative reviews I see here on Yelp really don't make any sense to me. read more

Once we opened it up, we realized there was not much fabric to work with. Jack was very honest about what he thought he could do but I left a little worried I just threw money away on a suit that would not for properly. Jack did a wonderful job working with the suit for a perfect fit. I am very impressed with his skill and he could not be a nicer guy. I'm picky about tailors, particularly when I'm looking to get something more complicated than hemming done. Which is why I went to Jack in the first place. Everyone here says he's awesome, I wanted an awesome tailor... so far so good. I don't live in Porter Square, I work at least 9-6 everyday, and have a propensity to take lazy Saturday mornings, so his hours don't really work for me. But this morning I finally made it out there with a pair of pants to be tailored and sweater to be mended (tiny hole). First up sweater. He won't do it, says he doesn't do that type of repair. I ask him someplace that does, he says he doesn't know. Next up pants. He won't do it. They've been altered in the past, and he won't work on something that someone else has worked on. So this is when I started to get a little pissed off. I like these pants, I would like to wear them again. But now apparently I have to find a tailor who is not quit as good to fix my pants, because I dared to live in another city once upon a time and allowed someone besides Jack to touch said pants. The thing is I can understand his point. They've been altered before, hence this job will be more complicated. Yeah I get that. That's why I came to the person that is supposedly the best. Jack, quite simply, is a master at his craft. Talent like his is a rare treasure these days. I had a $200/pair of Armani Jeans RUINED by another 2nd rate hem job elsewhere. So I brought them to Jack and he is a MIRACLE worker! I signed UP for Yelp just today specifically to leave this review. Jack took the time to find the EXACT match for my jeans from an ENORMOUS supply of hem discards and saved me hundreds of dollars in replacing the shoddy work of another tailor. He even manged to extend the hem to the proper length after the the other tailor had butchered them way too short. The hem job was PERFECT and appears seamless. In addition, he mended a 2nd pair of jeans for me that I had left for dead. A hole that I could fit my leg through on the left buttock has been mended up with style, and added years of use. Jack will save your clothes and your money in the long run. And the fact that he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet is a huge Bonus. I really can't say enough.
