After reading the mix of reviews on Yelp about Jack's pricing, I decided I'd better give this business a call before just showing up with the mountain of alterations I needed done. I called and asked very nicely if I could get an estimate for hemming a pair of pants. His response was "I'd need to look at it." Understandable, but I explained I just wanted a ballpark figure. He hung up on me. That was some superb costumer service. I figured if he was that rude on the phone to a costumer, I wouldn't want to deal with him in person. I called Porter Square Dry Cleaners 5 minutes later with the same question, and they very reasonably said $12 for a simple hem. So I guess I'm taking my alterations there. Randomly stumbling in to Jack's one day when I was looking for a tailor was one of the best happy accidents ever. He's done numerous suits, sport coats, and pairs of pants for me. He's very good at taking in a sport coat or suit jacket to give the wearer a nice line on the sides. He's also very nice, and has a memory like no one I've ever met. One time it had literally been years since I had been in and he still knew my name, and he always remembers how I like my pants to break, preferred sleeve length, etc. If you've never been to a good tailor, you may get some sticker shock. Well-tailored clothes are absolutely worth the investment, though. Another thing is that if you bring in poor quality clothes, Jack won't hesitate to ask you why you bought something (he's hoping it's not too late to return it!) So, fragile egos may be bruised, but he's very knowledgeable and just looking out for your best interest. read more

Jack provides master tailoring services with a personal touch. I suspect that most first-time customers become regulars. That was the case for me. On the suggestion of a colleague, I visited Jack and was impressed by how thoroughly he explained everything he was going to do to alter my new suit. He wanted to make it look great, and took the time to find out how I liked to wear my suits. I was so impressed, I returned with two more suits. On short notice, he fixed the mistakes of a department store tailoring service on a suit I had to wear for a wedding. I couldn't be happier with the results or more appreciative of Jack. read more

I went through years of mediocre tailors where I could always think of a way the work could have been better. With Jack it's different; perfect and symmetrical ever time. The man is an artist with a needle and thread. And he can do any job known to tailoring. He has made a difficult customer into a loyal patron. Of course he is not cheap either ($30 to hem and re-attach the cuff on trousers). But until I see better work (doubtful), I'm all about Jack's Tailoring. EDIT: Not sure what's going on lately, but Jack has messed up on a few of my alterations as well as one of my Brother's. I hope he isn't slipping. read more

It's about time I wrote a review for all the work I've had done at Jack's. I'm 6' 3 about 175 pounds, so it's impossible to find clothes that fit. Jack has taken so many of my floaty, ill-fitting shirts and turned them into staples of my work wardrobe. He does a great job, and when I bring him something he doesn't think is fixable, he tells me rather than wasting my money by doing it anyway. I've also had a couple of suits done here. I live in DC now, but just got married in the Boston area. Basically I couldn't get my suit to him until Tuesday and I needed it by Thursday, and Jack took care of it with no problems. Jack is the final word in tailoring in the Harvard/Porter area. His work is top-flight, he clearly explains every bit of work that he's going to do, and he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I initially brought Jack a very nice suit that I had bought several years ago and that no longer fit well due to weight loss. Jack explained to me that to take the suit in enough to fit (I was now 75 pounds lighter) would be as expensive as buying a new suit - so he recommended a nice store where I could buy one, and tailored it at a discount when I brought it in. The work was fantastic and I knew I had found THE tailor. Several months later I brought Jack a few pairs of jeans that I had bought that were too long. He asked me how I like to wear them, what kind of shoes I wear, and gave me the option of removing the original hem or keeping it, explaining the difference in cost and showing me examples of each. I elected to keep the original hem, and when I came in to pick them up I was stunned - it looked like they'd never been tailored at all. The fit is again perfect and they look great. Jack is a magician! I brought in a suit and jacket for alterations. The jacket had a moth hole; the suit jacket was too snug around the waist, yet offered precious little extra material for expansion. When I picked the items up, on time, a week later, the suit fit like a custom -tailored item from Savile Row in London; the moth hole had completely disappeared through some clever remodeling. His jeans hemming blows away my craft on my pride and joy Juki industrial, and dude, while it's snarky to say, I'm better than most tailors, if only because I follow directions. It was expensive at 35 bucks, but he starts with a chainstitch serge on the hem, and then puts it together with a top-secret method that involves...well, you'll just have to go see. Unreal. He also opted to go a half-inch longer than I spec'ed and he was dead right. He is talented, skilled, and absolutely does everything himself. I wish he made shirts. Cash or check only. The negative comments on this site are unfounded and frankly a little rude. You can't walk into Jacks Tailoring without seeing 1-2 people gleaming from ear to ear about how well their suit's fits them now, or how well Jack has been able to transform the item they purchased off the rack. Jack has fully tailored 4 suits for me since around 2006 and each time he has done an absolutely phenomenal job. Each time he takes the time to carefully look over the suit I bring him, examines how it fits on my body, and what could be done. In the past he has even suggested I return a suit I brought to him because the fit was simply not right for my body type. He explained it would cost much less to simply exchange the suit for another that could be more easily and cost effectively altered to fit me perfectly. This is the type of expert opinion you just don't get from suit salesmen and is something that is very much appreciated. I just recently bought 2 suits at Jos A Bank on one of their weekly super sales, brought them to Jack to review how they fit me, he agreed they could be altered to fit how I wanted them to fit. He was able to trim up the legs, tighten the waist and shorten the collar of the jacket on both suits and literally made them look like a custom suit; I could not be more impressed with how they both turned out. I will continue to go to Jack for all my tailoring needs, his knowledge and the quality of his work (regardless of the other posts on Yelp) make his prices seem incredibly reasonable, and even inexpensive when compared to some of the more popular tailors in the Downtown Crossing area. I would not trust anyone else. Jack has tailored a bridesmaid dress, jeans and other dresses for me, as well as a suit for my boyfriend. I was quite anxious about the bridesmaid dress fitting me right so I wouldn't be tugging at it the whole wedding and it was perfect. Such a relief for me! I could enjoy the wedding without worry. Jack is, as the rating system here on Yelp suggests when I enter five stars, "as good as it gets". I've brought him a wide variety of suits and pants and sweaters, and he makes things fit perfectly. I'm a violinist, and so I need clothes that not only fit but *move*. When I bring Jack a new suit, he knows to give me just a hair more length in the sleeves, since I'll be playing with my arms outstretched. The zillion little details add up to incredible quality. Yes, Jack's Tailoring is open!! I brought two pairs of jeans to be hemmed since they were long. My first impression of Jack was that he was someone that seemed genuine and kind, and based on the quote he delivered over the phone, I gave this shop a chance (mainly because it was a lot cheaper than other stores I've called in the area). When I received my jeans back in a few days, I found that the jeans were perfectly hemmed and although Jack has great, lower prices, his service is top-of-the-line! He is someone that has been mastering his craft for years now and he let me know that he is someone that pays attention to the smallest details when it comes to tailoring - so you know that he will be that tailor you need to get your clothes fitting in all the right spaces. A motto I live by is "if you want to look good, be friends with a great tailor" and that is Jack. I'll be looking forward to bringing in more clothes so that he can help me look great in them! read more

I hate to give this place a bum rap but I actually wasn't all that pleased with the results. To begin, everything everyone says about Jack is true. He is welcoming, friendly, and very willing to accommodate your needs. Though he set a date for pickup, he said that he could move it up or out depending on what worked best for my schedule. He also shakes your hand when you come in, which is a lost practice that I really appreciate. However, after picking up my jeans, I was a bit bummed. The price tag of over $30 is a bit tough to swallow, even though I wanted the jeans to look nice. Then, upon arriving home, the jeans were actually cut a bit too long...certainly longer than when I marked them with Jack in the shop. It's not a HUGE issue but if you're paying so much for one article of clothing, it should fit how it's supposed to. To his credit, the workmanship is near flawless, and the seam looks great. However, I've received comparable work for much less right in Harvard Square. Sorry, Jack, but I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

The first thing you notice about Jack is his fabulous accent. The second thing that you notice about Jack is that he is sure to get your name, and then he keeps referring to you by it. I needed 3 pairs of pants hemmed, and he was able to do it right away. He had me try them on, I was afraid they would be too short since I was planning to wear them with a heel. He instantly reassured me in said fabulous accent, 'ok, Jane, so you tell me you wear a taller heel, Jane. So we make it a little bit longer Jane, it will be beautiful" He is friendly, but also all business - he does a professional job, the pants look great ($10 a pair - worth the trouble for me, it takes me a whole weekend to hem one pair of pants because I don't have a machine), I am always wary of spending money to have someone alter an expensive item, so it was a relief to find someone who does a great job, and is super-friendly and fun to do business with. I love going here, just to hear Jack say my name! Anyway, I am glad to have found a local business like this, it makes me feel good about the world. read more

The first time I went to Jack I needed a dark green Diesel leather jacket restored. I had fallen off my bike and tore the jacket along a seam on the right side, between the arm pit and hip. There were also very deep scrapes and scratches on the shoulders and back as well as a few bits of loose material on the elbows. When I brought it into Jack I had explained how valuable the jacket was to me and that I needed him to do his best to restore it. Jack told me he doesn't normally work with leather and then explained the diffuculty in restoring a modern piece, opened the jacket at the tear and showed me that modern designs barely leave extra material to work with for repairs, pointing out that the thread lines were at the very edge of the cut of material. He then explained that if he could repair the tear that I should go to a leather goods shop and be very careful to choose a leather treatment to match the color of the jacket and recommended a few spots. After talking a bit of current affairs I left him to do his job. When I returned a week later, Jack greeted me at the door by name. He had laid the jacket out on the counter and asked me to show him wear the former tear was. I ran my eyes down both sides of the jacket and could not find any difference. He then explained to me that he was worried I may use the wrong leather treatment on the jacket so he took it upon himself to get the right one and apply it. The scrapes and blemishes are now barely visible. I couldn't be happier with the restoration Jack performed on my jacket, leather is an investment, and he brought it back to life. read more

Jack is, without a doubt, THEEE man. I've taken him two dress suits for tailoring (very different cuts from one another) and he has done a fabulous job making them appropriate for my body type. He even gave suggestions on how he could tailor specifically to my personal style, which he assessed within minutes of me walking in the room! So, beyond his fabulous work, he is also a man with taste, therefore getting his opinion on things is comforting, especially for a guy like me who doesn't visit a tailor often. Also of note: his emphasis is on what makes me feel 'confident'. That's a refreshing take on things! Jack is an extremely pleasant, professional man. When people say "He's not cheap," as an example I paid $45 to tailor a shirt and $35 to tailor a vest. You are, however, paying for the best in this case. Turn-around seems to be two weeks, typically. My experience with Jack has been stellar. When I needed something done in a week, he did it in six days and didn't charge me for the rush job. I came in to get the pants checked (he had brought the groin up, and wanted to make sure it fit properly) and when he wanted to take in the waist a little bit, he did it right then and there so I wouldn't have to come back. Finally, when I tipped him for the rush job, he called me after I had left to protest and to thank me. (He also called shortly afterwards to ask if I had accidentally left my iPod there, which I had.) Stellar, first-rate experience. Jack is the best. I've used a lot of different tailors in NYC and Boston and I haven't used one who is better than Jack. I have my pants and suits done there and they always have come out great. Jack is not the cheapest, and his hours aren't the most extensive, but he does fantastic work with pretty fast turnaround. if you care about the clothing item you want tailored, you should bring it here. In addition to tailoring, Jack also takes dry cleaning but he sends it out so there's no reason to bring your dry cleaning here compared to elsewhere. But for tailoring, he's the best. read more

Found Jack last year- he's done six suits for me so far, and his work is impeccable. I feel lucky to have him on my "team" - not only does he work to fit the garment and look to suit you, he will also educate and explain how the garments are constructed, and why one look over another is better. Here are some of the things I really like about Jack's. - He's honest- he'll tell you if that suit you bought on discount "really is junk" - he won't BS you, or just take your money to do the work. His policy is that if you don't look good, he don't look good! - The man really enjoys his work. We should all be so lucky to find ourselves doing something we enjoy. He makes it an art form. - If you have a garment tailored, and you're not sure about the length of a sleeve, or the break on a pair of pants, he encourages you to just drop back by, and he'll adjust it - he knows that sometimes a garment takes some getting used to, and that we may need to make some changes. - Once he has your size and shape figured out- he really has it dialed in. He'll help you understand what looks best, based on your build, and then he'll take each suit and transform it, so that they are consistent. read more

I am extremely happy with my experience at Jack's. He is kind, realistic, and knows his industry like no other. I brought a suit in that I bought years ago. He agreed that the quality was good, but the fit was pretty bad. He showed and explained exactly what needed to be done. Jack brought in the jacket under the armpits, took the jacket itself up, made the pants less baggy in the back, and brought the waste out. The only con was the price, but that's what you pay for top quality work. It cost me $195 to get the suit completely tailored and have two pairs of pants taken up, which was definitely cheaper than buying a new suit. Overall I'm very happy, and will be back to Jack for all of my future tailoring needs...I would trust nobody else. read more

Jack is the consummate professional; everything from an educated opinion to remembering your name, Jack nails it when it comes to delivering for his clients. The negative reviews pertain to morons altering jeans and casual clothing, and while my experience with jack is not in this realm- such clothes should not be a true barometer of this man's talents. My review relates to a suit alteration so complex that I had to extensively research the right person to tackle the project- someone that understands HOW a suit should fit. I could not be happier with the result, and now my father's $2000 suit looks like it was made just for me. With that said, I stand to inherit many more suits and I will not even consider anyone else, as I feel like I have found "my guy." I highly recommend Jack's services and expertise to anyone looking to have their suits altered; regardless of the price point of the suit, he will make the suit fit you the way it was intended to! Doing business with Jack is even more pleasant due to his positive attitude toward superior customer service... his warm smile and sincere approach don't hurt his reputation either. NB! Jack does exquisite work. Most of the negative reviews here are about the price. While steep, you really, really do get what you pay for. And who's forcing you to pay more than you want to anyway? Also, if you ask for something and he can't or won't do it, he'll tell you, and that's important. He's honest, polite, knowledgeable, skillful. I take my button-down Banana Republic shirts to jack- they're always a bit too long to wear untucked on my short torso. Jack did a phenomenal job- the shirt looks better than if it had come off the rack at the right length. It's a simple job, so take my advice for what it's worth. Honestly, there are probably a lot of competent tailors in any city- and jack is a bit pricer than I'm used to, but in my opinion, this is why he's worth the extra cost: 1) Jack learns your name. Immediately. Sounds trivial, but Jack remembered my name when I came to pick up my shirt. He also called me by name when speaking with me (I think it's how he remembers so well). I saw him call other customers by name and ask about their family, etc. Jack gets to know his customers and you feel like you're visiting a friend rather than making a transaction. That's nice in a big city. 2) I've been to other tailors who rely on you know what will look good on you. Jack explained the work. He asked me what I wanted to do, had me try the shirt on and immediately made recommendations. Not only that, but he explained proper proportion, length, drape, and made sure to show me what he meant while I wore the shirt and was sure I was happy with the decision. I mentioned previous tailors had gone too short and he adjusted a bit to make me feel assured. I felt totally confident the work would come out OK. 3) Each time I was in, I saw Jack turn work down. Once it was a complicated fabric. Once he didn't have the right machine. Each time, he recommended a competitor who could do the work. Why is this good? I feel it demonstrates that Jack knows what he can do and what he can't and isn't interested in a quick buck at the cost of his reputation. I respect that. Maybe that's where some of these negative reviews come from. One customer didn't and nearly accused him of singling her out. Admittedly, Jack got turned a bit cold at that point. But hey, she was being pretty rude in my opinion. You can't please everyone and I think Jack's aware of that. Like I said, the price is a bit more than other tailors I've been too, but the work is solid and the service you get is just outstanding. I'll be taking all my shirts to Jacks. read more

I haven't had a suit in years. So when I decided to get married I was up a creek. I got a really good deal on a couple suits at Brooks Brothers, but the cut wasn't comfortable. Found Jack here on Yelp after searching around town and asking a few friends. Called him up and he said "just come on in friend!" The service was quick, friendly, and comfortable. And when I came back to pick the suit up two weeks later it fit beautifully. I can't wait to wear it to my wedding! One note: Jack only takes cash. This wasn't a problem at all for me, but just remember this when you go in to pick up your suit! read more

Jack has done the best work of any tailor I've worked with. Jack is tremendously detail oriented. He has a good eye. I've been going to Jack's for many years now, simply because he provides an excellent, honest service at a fair price. I've used a few others prior to finding Jack's, and although some were "cheaper", I never stayed with any of them because I was never very satisfied. ("Cheaper" is in quotes since, essentially, I wasted my money on mediocre work/service I wasn't happy with.) I really appreciate Jack's friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, and reliable service. He takes the time to answer all your questions, understand your needs, measure your alterations carefully, and offer his expert suggestions. He's always straightforward, and won't blindly do something for the sake of more business. He'll let you know of alterations that he can and cannot do, changes that can be done, but shouldn't be (he has saved me from myself a few times, by steering me away from alterations that I would have later regretted!). I took some time to educate myself on good suit fitment after having some bespoke items made that didn't fit me quite perfectly. I've been to some local tailors over the years and hadn't found anyone that I felt very confident in handling anything beyond basic alterations. For my upcoming wedding, I wanted my tuxedo to fit perfectly. I decided to stop in to Jack's after reading some of the experiences here. Unfortunately, Jack told me up front that he wouldn't be able to finish the alterations in time for me. I procrastinated a little too much, and Jack had overlapping vacation plans. He did recommend a competitor who he trusted would do a good job for me. That kind of honesty is appreciated. But when Jack educated me in the alterations that he thought should be done, pinned the changes while I stood in front of the mirror to show me and absolutely nailing the fit, I was floored by his devotion. Jack said that he wanted to be sure that I looked "like a superstar" for my wedding. Before I left the shop, he was so concerned that he said that he would find the time to do it if I wasn't comfortable with another tailor. I did manage to find a tailor who I felt comfortable with and who could rush the alterations in time for me. But there is no question that I'll be going to Jack from now on. Top notch. I'm new to Boston, and didn't want to have the dry cleaning employee who has been there 18 months pin and hem my pants. I checked on yelp, found Jack, and experience was as advertised and perfect. Friendly greeting (btw, it's always Jack as he is the only one who works there and has been for 24 years) great advice, quick turnaround, delivered on time, GREAT WORK and prices that aren't much more than I would've paid at the cleaners. I wanted one type of hem, he suggested different, gave his argument and let me choose. I felt comfortable as it's apparent he knows what he is talking about. Jack is great, but I have a couple of small issues. Ultimately I keep coming back, but not without (minor) reservations. The good: 1. Jack knows his stuff. He's made good jackets great, and tapered legs in pants in ways I definitely hadn't considered. I have better clothes thanks to him. 2. If you're a regular, he'll rush orders, call you to remind you something is ready, or call just to tell you he's going on vacation so you can come by beforehand. Sweet guy for sure. The bad: 1. He knows he's good, and he's expensive. 2. Cash only. 3. Occasionally he'll do something weird, like hem khakis with black thread which is visible from across the room. Seems like a sloppy thing to do for someone who is otherwise so meticulous. THAT BEING SAID, if you ASK HIM TO FIX IT, he'll happily take care of any issue. read more

I had a suit done by Jack two years ago, and it turned out great. I recently went back to have a few shirts slimmed up as well as get some jeans taken in. Jack is absolutely the best. He doesn't just do a nip here and a tuck there; he creates new clothes from your existing pieces. He turned a boxy, off-the-rack suit into a fitted work of flawless fashion. He makes shirts look like they were made custom just for me (which I guess they were, once he's worked on them!) Jack is a master craftsman of the highest caliber. His care and attention to not just the requested adjustments, but to the overall look of the final product, is beyond compare.
