If you have an ill fitting suit then you don't know Jack! I went to Jack's a year ago and should have posted a review then as he was the best tailor I had been too. He is not the cheapest but he is is a great value for what he does (see details below) and I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone. The first visit here I brought in a brand new Italian suit (from an outlet sale) and he made it my own. Fast forward a year later: the suit he tailored was so good and fit so well I wore it to my wedding! And the suit and alterations have held up through dry cleaning with no issues. This past week I went back to have Jack take care of a new Tuxedo and he was able to do the same high quality custom job - even handling some custom button changes. On pants, Jack doesn't just hem the cuffs; he looks at the construction of the pants, gets to know your style and what events the garment is intended for, and then has the talent and eye to adjust everything on the pants from the seat, thighs, cuffs, waistband, inseam, and lining to make the garment fit better than you could have imagined. And that's just for the pants! He can do anything on jackets, perfectly proportioning the chest, back, sleeves, cuffs, and labels to make each jacket feel and look like it was made to measure. Now all my jackets fit my body like a glove. They hang the same way when they are buttoned or unbuttoned and the lines or smooth when I'm standing or sitting with straight or bent arms. If you want just your sleeves and pants shortened you can go anywhere. Some person will measure and chalk the length and then maybe a different person (or worse someone off-site) will hem it and then call it a day. Any dry cleaner will do and it will look like the cheap job you paid for. But if you want your clothes to properly fit through a truly quality, custom tailoring job then Jack is the tailor for you. Jack does great work and, as I found out today in speaking with him, has been a tailor for 32 years. I'm a big believer in a good experience and personal touches to make a business great, and this guy does it. I've been in twice so far, and the first time I went in, I had bought a pair of joes jeans that Nordstrom convinced me were a good fit. After they hemmed them, I still wasn't satisfied as I prefer an extremely tapered pant that is hard to find without being too skinny. I called Nordstrom to see if they would taper the jeans, to which they said, "jeans can't be tapered." So I looked around yelp and found Jack, gave him a call, and he said for sure bring them in. I kid you not, when I walk in I try on the jeans and walk out the fitting room. He says, "okay, turn toward there," so I did, and then he says "Ok." So I go back in and change and head out, not really knowing what to expect. When I come back, I think it was probably $20 or so and they were the best fitting jeans perfect for my specific legs I've ever owned, without even touching or measuring anything, true story. He says today "it's all about a good eye." My jacket I brought in today, which I ordered on Nordstrom Rack for $99 was ill fitting, of course, like anything else I buy (tall and skinny) and for that cheap. He is going to take it in, taper the sleeves, and adjust collar for about $170. All in on a custom Vincent Camuto blazer jacket will be $270, which is great. Also got 4 pair of jeans hemmed making the total $225 for the tailoring. Not bad for reliable work. I can only assume the jacket will fit great. The other jacket I had he said wasn't worth it, which I appreciate. I also mentioned I had just gotten married and need this in two days for a wedding party with both mine and my wife's family at a nice restaurant in Boston. He said no problem he will do it for me. Outstanding. Just act like a decent and caring human being when you walk in and people will treat you well (a little advice for the haters). Came here on the recommendation of a friend but had an awful experience. I'm not sure if this guy is lazy, has huge mood swings, or is just a jerk. But he had zero interest in talking to me about altering three suits I brought in, or even looking at them. Apparently he doesn't belittle himself shortening jackets. And when I pushed him to actually look at one of the suits, he said it looked fine and didn't need any work--the sleeves were obviously too short and it needed fabric taken out of the back. But how could he have known that without coming out from behind the counter or even asking me to turn around. The entire interaction lasted 30 seconds and it was clear after two he wanted nothing to do with me. No idea what I did wrong, except coming to this place. I had a 10 year old Canali suit that was very baggy on me due to weight loss and also due to styling / fashion changes since. Jack was very knowledgeable and the changes he made not only improved the fit but made the styling more contemporary. He listened to my requests ( some deemed reasonable some not) and explained to me his process (although on an efficient way). He deserves the benefit of the doubt since he has been doing this for so long. Prices are high but you also pay for expertise as opposed to your near by dry cleaners. If you have something basic (hems etc) shop around. Anything more than that - especially if fit is important - recommended whole heartedly. read more

Jack tailored 2 of my suits a few years back and I was very pleased with his work, so after purchasing a new suit at Bloomingdales, where the tailoring, I thought, was off- I went back to Jack. I came in, tried it on, showed him and he said- "that tailor did a very good job- I don't want to touch it. What don't you like about it? I told him, then he went into full Jack-mode and showed me that the work was fit to me well with several examples of what he meant. He said "I don't think you need my tailoring, Thom." I thought "what?, you're my guy- why are you refusing to make this better for me?" And he showed me again why he thought the fit was very good for me and that the Bloomingdales tailor did a good job. I then said, "OK- how about this area? (the upper arms) I'd like this to be slimmer". He said, "OK, do you have a couple minutes now?" Confused, I responded "Um....yes". He pinned and marked the arms as I requested and asked me to take off the jacket and proceeded to make the alterations right then and there. It took 10 minutes, and I put the jacket on and it was exactly how I wanted it. He agreed it was a good call. Then I said "and with my trousers, the upper part is too baggy- I asked the Bloomingdales tailor to take that in and he did, but not enough". Jack said- "See the pockets? They are pulling out a bit. The tailor took as much in as possible- I will not do that because you are at the edge of what you can do in that area. He did what you requested." At this point, I was feeling pretty good that he cared enough to flex with my request, but push-back where my desire was not aesthetically sound. Went around looking for a good tailor in the Boston area. Found Jack's Tailoring in Cambridge in Porter Square. I had 1 suit jacket and 2 blazers that needed to have the sleeves shortened. Jack was very courteous, pleasant, and professional upon first meeting him. He did a fantastic job on my jacket and blazers, and he also added fantastic little details to the buttons on my sleeves. He overlapped the buttons slightly, instead of keeping them lined up. I have an image, but I am not sure where I can upload it. I did not ask for this, but went the extra step for no charge. I came to Jack a month and a half ago asking if he could make alterations on a jacket. He said to come back if I wanted the job done. I was leaving the country and told him that I needed everything by Jan 31. He said "no problem just come back and I'll take care of it." I have been coming to Jack for the last few years and he has never disappointed. The first time I met him I brought in a suit that I previously had tailored but was not happy with. TL;DR: probably fine for low-investment clothing, but if you have something you care about go to someone who can at least take in a collar and body without messing it up. After I was lured in by all the glowing 5 star reviews, the end result of an alteration I got looks pretty amateurish. I came with a boxy topcoat that was definitely too long on the sleeves, but in my opinion everything else was fine. He pinned it how he wanted to alter it, and over the next week the coat was taken in on the body, sleeves, and collar, and the sleeves shortened. The only thing that came out reasonable was the shortening of the sleeves, although the stitching job on the ends of the sleeves was pretty bad. The sleeves also had functional buttons, but those were sewed shut which indicates laziness. Additionally, after alterations the body is now uneven, and the collar pops out at a strange angle. The initial pinning was overzealous as well; I can no longer button the top button and the shoulders and sleeves are way too tight. Given that I paid $200 for the four alterations (collar, body, sleeves, and sleeve shortening), I would have at least expected evenness and functional buttons. Regardless of ruining the boxy aesthetic, the fact that the body and collar came out uneven reflects poor workmanship. Thankfully I will most likely be able to take my coat to another tailor to get it let out so that it ends up somewhere halfway inbetween where I got it and how it ended up after being altered by Jack. I would suggest being very adamant about what alterations you would like, as well as the price. If that doesn't fly, take your business elsewhere. read more

Three years and several bridesmaid dress later, Jack is still my go-to guy. This update is long overdue as Jack consistently delivers well-fitting alterations that make garments look custom fitted, rather than well tailored. Jack has altered bridesmaid dresses* for me that literally had 12+ extra inches in the waist, bust, hips, etc. and made them fit well. Now, every wedding I go to I find myself spotting bad alterations and thanking my lucky stars for a decent tailor. My co-workers constantly compliment me about how well my clothing fits me. The credit goes entirely to Jack. I also construct a lot of my own clothing, but lack the resources and time to alter garments that are complicated or have a deadline. That being said, when I get home I inspect Jack's work every time. Seams, hems, pleats, darts, you name it - he does solid work. He is expensive, but I think flattering, well-fitting clothing is worth the cost. I found this place in Yelp and was not disappointed. After an initial snag on the phone (don't ask him for even loose estimates over the phone - he insists has to see it on you) I found Jack to be a cheerful, wonderful man, who loves what he does. I came in to get a suit tailored, but had never done this before and didn't know what to expect. He stepped me through all the usual tailoring options, showed me in great detail how he could change each aspect of the clothing, and let me choose which I wanted (& fit the price I wanted). Taking in the waist on a suit jacket, shortening pant legs, bringing in the pants' waist, shortening the cuffs a bit, and basically recutting an entire old dress shirt of mine was only $180 (Incredibly cheap from what I've seen online.) And the whole time he was just a fun guy to talk to. We chatted it up about his home country, its history, how long he's been here, etc. Absolute pleasure, and will be giving him my business often. read more

Unlike other reviewers, I'm not so sure that this guy "knows his stuff." Last Saturday, I was looking to have the sleeves stortened and the body taken in on a vinatge 3-roll-to-2 Hickey Freeman sack tweed (a really nice find). My usual tailor was out sick, so, in a pinch, I decided to check Jack's out since I've walked past it countless times. Jack has me try on my jacket and asks me what I think needs to be done. I guess he's not used to people having any idea what they're doing--as I expained that I wanted the sleeves shortened to show 1/2" of shirt cuff, the body taken by an inch or so at the waist, and the bunching at the bottom of the sleeve opening fixed, he seemed somewhat taken-aback. He then proceeded to break out the straight pins and adjust the jacket body and sleeve length. Now, for those who don't know, the body of a sack jacket is cut straight, without any darts in the front, and there's minimal waist suppression. It's supposed to be roomy, but not shapeless. It's the classic, mid-century American cut (a component of the so-called "Ivy League" look) and places like Brooks Brothers and J. Press still make them, although they're increasingly rare. Back to matter at hand: I was already a little unsure about how the body of the jacket had been pinned, given that things had gotten a little too fitted for the style, when he says "I'm going to show you something--let me know what you think." He then proceeds to start pinning the sleeves along their back seam to make them more fitted. My jaw dropped. Has he never seen a sack jacket before? Could he not tell that this wasn't some generic piece of wannabe, faux-euro, slickster dreck from Mens Wearhouse? Or worse, some sad, snug-fitting, hipstery knock-off of heritage Americana from J. Crew? Man alive. I politely suggested that since I might want to layer a sweater under my jacket, perhaps he should leave the sleeves alone. Finally, for the body work and the sleeve shortening, I asked him for a total. I am told: "$110." I'm pretty sure I visibly balked when I heard the number, given that that's almost double what I usually pay my tailor for the same work. Shaky on the fundamentals and almost twice as expensive? No thanks. I'll wait 'til my guy is feeling better. read more

Very, very Meh. I have a sewing machine at home and can do minor things myself like topstitch hemming but since the pants I needed done were for work, I thought I better go to the pros. My work is not always perfect! I brought in 3 pairs of pants, 2 needed topstich hemming and one had a blind stitch that fell out on one leg. Jack told me $40, which I thought was a little pricey, but considering all the great reviews I thought I would go for it. The pants were clean but a little wrinkled when I dropped them off. I was very surprised to find that they had not been pressed when I picked them up. The hems were not perfectly even and the hems had been ironed so hard that they had scald marks (which come out in the washer, but still). Also, he doesn't accept credit cards, which is fine, but he needs a sign saying so. I ended up having to run to the ATM. Honestly, I could have done just as well myself and am peeved I wasted $40. Yeah, he is nice, but who cares if my pants look like crap? read more

I'm getting married soon, and will be wearing a traditional kilt and suit, which is a little unusual compared to most American styled suits. I wanted a few minor adjustments, and made the mistake of originally taking it to a Men's Wearhouse. The tailor ignored my questions (flat out didn't answer me), and pinned the suit so awkwardly that I knew it was going to turn out badly. I'm glad I left and went to see Jack instead. Jack was happy to answer my questions, and he showed me that what I thought I wanted for adjustments wouldn't turn out well. In the end, he helped me find a solution without any tailoring. I'm much happier to have the right answer from a tailor so I can trust the results, than having him do some work for the sake of a little more business. I'll throw down my five stars for Jack too, even being extremely late. I've had two suits (and a blazer will be dropped by shortly as well) heavily modified by Jack, and I've been more than extremely pleased with the work he's done. If you know the terms, you will have a great friend with Jack. If you have a strong sense of personal style and vision of where you wish to take your clothing, he will follow your words and requests. I follow more of a mod/60's style aesthetic, and knowing how long he's been in this business, he made my suit jacket from baggy mess to perfect flattering fit. I've had him extend sleeves, take the sides in, drop the collars, lenghen arms, hem pants, all of these were done on a timely basis, but I do not rush him. I'm pretty sure I could, but I would much rather have a quality job done versus a mutilated garment and an angry tailor. Once you actually start having your stuff personally tailored, it's amazing how much you recognize how horrible men wear their suits untailored, the sleeves too long, and so on and so forth. After going to him, I don't want to go to anyone else for tailoring. After picking up my suit, I got into a conversation with him for about a good solid half hour about mens wear, and my lamentation of the lack of tailors. His prices are kind of high, but the service is fantastic. He is so nice, remembers your name and repeats it a lot. So, I had two dresses that I wanted to get tailored for a friend's wedding and my rehearsal dinner. I went into Jack's to talk to him about it -- he took one look at the dresses without making me try them on and told me he couldn't do it. I found this so strange considering that these reviews make it seem like the man can do anything. He said he didn't have the tools to do my dress and on top of that, he was going on vacation for 2 weeks and probably couldn't get my dresses on time anyway. He seemed like a nice guy, but I can't tell how much of his story was vacation related and how much had to do with the fact he didn't have the right tools. So, be prepared, you too could be turned away. I decided to bring my ok-fitting suit to Jack after reading all the rave reviews. I have been searching for Boston tailors that specialize in tailoring suits and Jack was my first pick after comparing reviews. I needed the sleeves shortened, pants hemmed and tapered to fit better. The shoulders were also not fitting perfectly but I thought that would not be worth the money. When I stopped by, I was greeted warmly by Jack and proceeded to put on the suit. Within seconds of looking at me, Jack was able to pinpoint what exactly needed to be done. His style is modern European with sleek and slim fit looks. That was exactly what I was looking for and without me telling him, Jack was able to figure out what needed to be done. When I explained to him that I did not really like how the shoulders fit, with a pinch at the back of the collar he was able to make the suit fit me perfectly from the shoulders to my chest. I was impressed by his eye for this. He took the time to explain his reasoning behind each alteration and did not pressure me into doing it if I didn't feel comfortable. When he quoted me the price, I thought it was high but not really surprised because the quotes I've gotten from other tailors for the sleeves, hemming and tapering were on-par. Other tailors quoted significantly more for shoulder alteration. Jack was very flexible with the timing and he got it done in less than a week. When I went back to try on the suit, I was really impressed by what he has done and the quality of it. I have never seen an off-the-rack suit fit so well on me before and the look was exactly what I was looking for - sleek, clean, slim fit, no hanging fabric and everything feels made-to-measure. So, I first hear of Jack from a friend who is graduating Harvard College. He says I have to go there, not to waste 1000 dollars on a suit at J Press, just buy a two or three hundred dollar suit at Filene's Basement and "bring it to Jack." He is apparently the guy that all the Harvard students go to before their interviews. So, I bring it to Jack. I come in and he is already smiling. I'm holding two suits from my father. They're great suits, but the thing is my dad broke his arm when he was a kid, so one arm is 4 inches shorter than the other. I assume nothing can be done, but Jack finds a way. He takes the short arm down and the long arm up. The arms look great. Then he asks, "Take it in?" I say, "Okay." He takes it in and all of a sudden this 300 or 400 dollar suit has the kind of "bust" you see in a J.Press suit. It looks TAILORED. Jack asks if a week is too long. A week? Jos A. Bank takes a month! Since no med schools have sent interviews yet, I say, don't worry, a week's fine. Nice guy... What can I say? Jack is a magician. I stopped in without an appointment in my work clothes (carhart, ratty workboots, etc) Jack treated me like I walked in wearing a tuxedo. Extremely personable and honest. I have a beautiful coat that I needed relined and thought I would try Jack's. He did an excellent job. The stitching is not even visible, the lining is strong and pretty. The turnaround was two weeks. I am very happy with the work. It cost $175 for a knee-length wool coat. I am not sure if this is a lot or not, as this is the first time I had this type of tailoring done. As long as it lasts at least a few years I will be happy though. Jack is, to put it very simply, nothing short of a miracle worker. My wife and I have used him for jobs large and small through the years, and every single time he has produced nothing but utterly exemplary work. I came to him once with a pair of pants that, embarrassingly, were ripped clear through the crotch. It just so happens that these pants came from the Brooks Brothers suit I wore at my wedding. Several people thought they were a goner, but Jack fixed them up like new. I brought a pair of badly ripped Hugo Boss suit pants to Jack. They had a complicated compound-tear that started in the pocket and progressed into the legs. Threads were flying everywhere, you could see straight through the pants, and I struggled to understand how the fabric ever fit together in the first place. One week later, I returned to pick them up and Jack posed a challenge to me: can I tell which leg was fixed? For all intents and purposes, no, I couldn't tell. Amazing. I had two suits that needed to be altered with a relatively short time frame for some pending job interviews. I went to Jack for the first time this past spring to get two bridesmaid dresses fixed up. While expensive, he did a fantastic job of making sure I wouldn't end up exposing myself or suffer some other embarrassing dress-related catastrophe AND he was super nice and helpful through the whole process. Come around to last weekend, and I have another dress to be tailored, so of course, I take it to Jack. This dress was the SAME material as the dresses he did for me in the spring. He looks at the dress and with all the sass he can muster, says he won't do it. Even when I told him that it wasn't about the hem (as that was the sheerer of the two fabrics) and I just needed the structure adjusted. Without a conversation or even looking at the part I'm referring to he turns me away. It's okay, it's his prerogative to turn away my business, but for the prices he's charging he might not want to be so damn RUDE about the situation. Since I found his shop on the internet last year, Jack has altered at least twenty pieces for me in a project I have set to ensure that everything I wear out at work and play is a flattering, perfect fit. Jack immediately puts me at ease with his genuine warmth and professionalism. He provides kind but honest assessments of the fit of each piece I bring in, demonstrating with pins what realistically can and cannot be done. He has creative ideas about how to smooth lines and flatter a piece in ways I had not considered. He diplomatically breaks the news to me if a piece can not do what I hoped it could do. For each piece of mine he has altered, there has been a piece that was purged from my closet. Most tailors I have encountered would take on any job; Jack lets me know from the outset if the prognosis is poor, and this saves me money (and that second opinion ensures quality control in my wardrobe). When I return to pick up a garment he has altered, he has me try it on so we can assess the results together and make any final adjustments. On top of all this, he is also flexible with expediting work when I have an event deadline for a piece. In short, Jack truly is both tailor and wardrobe consultant, and a genuine pleasure to work with. If you have high standards and would like personalized, outstanding service, look no further. P.S. After I initially posted the above, I looked at some reviews posted here. Some reviewers quibble about price; he is slightly more expensive, but the quality is worth it. He has always been honest and straightforward with me. Other reviewers have complained their results weren't perfect. My response is that there is no guarantee that a piece you want altered can work on your figure in the way you envisioned. Keep in mind that your expectations should be realistic. For example I brought in a dress that was made with two seams; I envisioned a smooth, princess-style fit-and-flare look, told him so, and he tactfully told me that it's not possible to achieve this look with only two seams in the garment. He even demonstrated by pinning it for me and illustrated this so I could understand. Conversely, I brought in a very well-made dress I had purchased, tried it on, and he tactfully suggested it made me look shorter than I am. I immediately saw his point and returned it, grateful he looked at the dress on ME, not just the dress itself. I have found that Jack does the most that can be made to optimize the fit of each garment I give him. If you have any concerns, just COMMUNICATE with him; he will give you an honest assessment and take the time to illustrate his point. read more
