Went to dinner here a few weeks ago, after coming here off and on for the past 20 years, and the food sucked. My Harris Ranch steak was supposed to be cooked medium-well and came out burnt-well. Waitress forgot to ask about potato, then the cook forgot that a veggie comes with the dinner. Waitress also forgot about the bread so that came out about halfway through our dinner. Took our slices of pie that comes with the dinner home. Husband opened his the following day (ordered the berry) and it was a tiny, horrible mess which added insult to injury. We figured it was the cook and when my son, home for less than 24 hours from college, asked me out for breakfast, suggesting Jack's, we went with our trepidations in check. Big mistake. The California Omelette I frequently order with hash browns and sourdough was hardly what I'd call an omelette. Instead of folding the eggs around the veggies, turning it into more of a skillet than an omelette, they were mixed into the eggs with tons of cheese inside and out. Gross amounts of cheese. The hashbrowns were flat and when adding salt, I found that almost the entire shaker's contents were caked meaning that the server on sides wasn't paying attention and the restaurant isn't following common food safety rules. The worst part was having the waitress bring the meals and THEN informing me at the time of delivery they were out of avocados. Granted, she offered to replace it with something else, but did it ever occur to her or the cook to inform me BEFORE making my breakfast that they were out? How about if the patron opts not to have a replacement, at least providing a discount on the meal? Son had the French Toast, wanted two slices, came with three. He ate one. I had a taste (only put it in my mouth because, while FT is one of my absolute favorite breakfast foods, this one had the flavor and texture of cardboard) and understood why this kid who can pack away half a cow without blinking and was "starving hungry" this morning, stopped at one. Twenty-five freaking bucks later . . . The waitress passed us as we were leaving the table and asked if we wanted to-go containers upon seeing most of our meal still on the plates. I laughed and said there was no way I'd take that home, it was horrible. Told the manager who wanted to know why I said the food was horrible and listed off everything. "Sorry," was all that he said. Yep, sorry, buddy. We won't be back and recommend to anyone who has also made this a go-to place, find somewhere else. read more

I loved this place back in 2010 when I first moved here.Everything on the menu was always good,and super busy.Now it's slow with people and the service.We waited 40mins for our food.They even forgot to give us our soft drinks.My boyfriend's salad was the size of a kiddie plate, and my gravy was chunky.The turkey tasted weird,it had a bad smell to it.The quality isn't great anymore,I would definitely not be returning. read more

My wife and I went here for lunch and as per my normal I ordered ice tea. The first glass came it had a lemon in it I squeezed it into my glass and took a drink. However to my surprise what I thought was a lemon seed in my mouth turned out to be a fly. I let the waitress know of the problem she got me another glass of tea. I took the lemon from the new glass and squeezed it into the tea. Once again took a drink and again got a fly that went up the straw. Look, it is what it is, an old school diner. While the food was middling in quality, the service was quick, attentive, and friendly. Jacks is the type of place you go when its 3am and no where else is open, but also because you're so drunk anything will taste good. The coffee is cheap but lacking in quality. The waitstaff is friendly and nice, and the service is always quick. The food on the other hand, tastes stale and too greasy. While Jacks is cheap, 24hrs, and has good serving sizes, so does Denny's and the food there is much better. read more

After some mornings errands an a quick view of my "yelp" app (real handy get it people) we found ourselves by Jack's. Overall the food was well portioned for the price and most was prepared as ordered. I will stop by again for other menu items maybe the lunch time specials. As for the AM food the gravy was bland and the chicken fried stake was a bit chewy. It is with anticipation as always that the owners / managers pass on the feedback and make adjustments accordingly. Ate her for my first time and my family was the only group in the restaurant. Some high kids in their 20s came and sat next to us, but we tried to not make a big deal. But the manager came over on his own and asked them to politely move, they gave him a hard time, but he was very professional about it. and I will DEFINITELY come back because of this manager and his actions. read more

Love this place! Definitely my go-to for satisfying my late night munchies! My boyfriend and I always go together after leaving the bars cause it's inexpensive and super yummy! I almost always get the ultimate breakfast burrito and ask for salsa and sour cream on the side and he always gets the meat lover's omelet. For a late night or early morning, Jacks is the spot...most people go here after the bars or shows at the Senator Theater. It is kind of a like a bar minus the booze because everyone is pretty trashed in here. The pies are awesome here, I used to walk down late night for a slice of pie with my roommate. For a brief time, I thought Jack's might be under new ownership. Wrong. My question is: how hard is it to make tasty biscuits and gravy? Too hard, I guess. I am still ill today four hours after my breakfast at Jacks. First of all, the biscuits were served upside down....the hard bottom was up. The gravy was simply flour and water...no seasoning, no bits of meat. If anyone knows of a place in Chico that serves good biscuits and gravy (for less than $10), please post. This place has floated between 4 and 5 stars for me, so they get a 5 ;) This has to be the #1 place for all those downtown drunks who were evicted from bars after last call! lol I've always had a good and mild mannered waitress, some fair, most of them friendly and sweet. The food has always come up in a fair amount of time. The portions are good for the price, the location is ideal for downtown. This may be because I am a college student at this time, but I love Jack's Family Restaurant. The staff is very friendly and they treat you like friends. As one of (if not THE) oldest restaurants in Chico, Jack's has quite the reputation around town. If I ever want to go on a midnight munchy run or meet up with friends or get something to help me sleep better after a midnight movie at the senator, Jack's is the first place that comes to mind. This restaurant is a great place for enjoyment, cheer, and cheering up. Hell, I still hear stories from my father about going to Jack's with friends and family and how the things he remembered most about Jack's were the Sleepy Dan and The Lumberjack specials. They have an outdoor patio that people can sit at (if weather permits), a good ol' counter from which you can even talk to the chefs (usually), booths, and an old fashioned stone wall from the 70's that they have sworn to never remove in order to keep its classical feel. The "short & sweet" is that these people have great hospitality, great food, and a great atmosphere. It's just one of the many places you have to go to truly experience Chico. read more
