The drive through employees don't make eye contact and only speak to get your money with an attitude as if you are inconveniencing them. They just hold the bag of food out of the window. Ordered a cup of ice and a chicken sandwich two weeks ago and upon arriving to the window to get the ice and the chicken sandwich was told, We can't sell ice right now". In order to get ice you had to order a drink, did that and asked for extra ice, that was a freaking joke, only got a few pieces of ice floating around the top of the drink. The girl acted like she was being tortured to have to even speak with a customer (Not uncommon for this location). When I said I'll pay for a drink, but can I just take the ice and you keep the drink., that was not an option either, you had to take the fountain drink with it. I guess so it could melt the few pieces of ice floating on the top of the drink. The customer service is truly horrible!!!! The chicken sandwich is what got them one star because it was dry, yet edible if your tastebuds don't have expectations. Oh, don't order a gallon of tea, you're only going to get a "Bag of tea" that is about the equivalent of a half gallon of milk! That's if they are even serving tea or fountain drinks that specific day, as I have encountered that scenario there before as well. Never again Jacks, NEVER again!!! read more

I stopped eating here after there was a cockroach in the water cup of the people sitting behind me. That being said it is only one of a couple places open 24 hours, albeit only Friday and Saturday. Typical greasy spoon diner. Most stuff is premade frozen and just heated/cooked to order. Service is nice, plenty of parking. read more

Idk what the bad reviews are about because this place serves delicious classic breakfast meals. The service is quick, and the food is good quality for the prices. The portions are huge and you never have too wait long for your food. I appreciate how they bring the bill when they bring the food so you don't have to wait around for anyone to notice you're done. Jacks is made for late night eats. I wouldn't come here if I wasn't headed home from the bars, but its just what you need to make the dinner that you drank sit well. Jacks is one of those places that you really dont even like that much, but you keep finding yourself there anyway. Its the same story every time... you start your night at the bar with the specials that night (power hour, buck night, teas at panamas, whatever)... from there you probably go to 5 or 6 other bars, you dance with that ugly girl in your GE class and then regret it and flee, you almost get in a fight with some guy from Butte College yelling at his girlfriend, and then before you know it... BAM You are at Jacks eating just ok greasy fried foods with a hundred other drunk Chico'ans (Chicoites? Chicoers?). I mean lets be honest, I think Jacks does 80% of its business between midnight and 4am. And my god, do i feel sorry for the poor wait staff who have had to deal with a ridiculous amount of drunken bullshit every night. Anyway, Jacks isnt that good... i think. Its hard to remember since i think my head was spinning 75% of the time i was there. But anyway, its a Chico tradition. This place doesn't stand out although it is on the Main Street, but their service is great and the quantity of their food is fantastic! I've been coming to this restaurant since 2011 and the food used to be really great up until last year where the quality has been decreasing. The service was amazing as always and the food on my end was okay but my girlfriend's meal was terrible. The enchilada's were tiny and the rice/beans were super oily making her stomach sick. My California Burrito was okay but not something to make me want to continue coming back for dinner. Breakfast there has been delicious but within the last year it has been getting less and less fresh tasting. I hope the quality improves to what it used to be but unfortunately until then I won't be returning. read more

Used to get the LumberJack Special back in the day. 3 plates of food for like $7. Went back fairly recently. Apparently the cook doesn't get the mechanics of how an omelet is made. The fast service is a real draw here when you need to eat breakfast in a hurry to drive back down to Sacramento at 6am. The coffee is flowing, and the server is super nice and very efficient. So I always thought of Jacks as a run-down Dennys but I was pleasantly surprised on a recent visit. For one, yeah it is definitely a place to stop after a wild night of drinking. It is also, though, good at breakfast. The other day I went and ordered dinner as well, which was the Santa Barbara Burger. Absolute deliciousness! The only thing that was kind of pity was the "side salad" that came with it...essentially green iceberg lettuce with croutons. Seriously?! Stopped by for breakfast today and knew when I heard Big Audio Dynamite in the parking lot that this was a good omen. Walked in, wasn't crowded at 9am, took a seat at the counter and ordered the huevos rancheros. Waitress was prompt and asked if I needed any coffee. Another great sign. Food comes out shortly and it was a large plate of heavenly eggs, rice, beans, tortillas and ground beef. I really didn't know what to expect as this was my first visit but I ate the whole thing. If no one was watching, I probably would have licked the plate. $6.99 for the plate and $1.50 for coffee. Coffee was meh. Not strong enough to defend itself from the rest of the plate. My friend took me here for breakfast this morning. I ordered the Meat Lover's Skillet (if I remember the name correctly). It is around $10. I was expecting it to be mediocre like Dennys, but it went beyond my expectations. The food was amazing and it actually filled me up... IT ACTUALLY FILLED ME UP. Went here with my girlfriend the other night and was amazed by what passes for service. When we first got there things seemed okay, not too crowded, decent atmosphere, and a smiling staff. We order drinks and the host tries to tell me that Mountain Dew is not a Pepsi product. Then our waitress forgets our salads, forgets the shrimp that was supposed to come with my steak, and the cook mixes up they way my girlfriend and I order our steaks. Our waitress switches mid-meal as the first one is clocking off. Top it off with a complete failure to bring me the ice-cream that is the final part if my order and you have destroyed any desire I have to return. Even though I got a medium-rare steak instead of a rare it was decent. Our appetizers (the "combo-combo") were horrible, with the fried mushrooms an zucchini being over cooked while the fried mozzarella was undercooked. My shrimp once I got it was basically just breading. All in all I highly doubt I will be returning. read more

So, I was just at Jack's restaurant and this happened: the card I was using was declined. I stand there dumbfounded for a moment before pulling out a 5 (half the bill) and said it was all I had with me. The server tells me I could leave my bike helmet. I ponder it for a moment and reply finally that I definitely needed my bike helmet so I could ride to the bank and figure it all out. She promptly takes this moment -- while I'm still standing there rubbing my chin, trying to come up with a workable solution -- to say, "You can leave it or I will call the police." Mind you, I had been cooperative and kind through this whole 30 second ordeal. So she basically terrorizes me into leaving something, so I leave my bike pump with her. I head out to the bank and sure enough, the card is not working. But I was irked by the idea that she had my bike pump, an important tool in my life, hostage. So I went back to tell her that her having my pump wasn't going to work for me, and that I felt like I had been handled with no dignity. After a firm assertion that she was helping me by not just calling the cops immediately, my temper promptly took over and I stormed out and told them they had lost my business. I share this today because this is the third time in my direct experience that the management at Jack's was rude or cruel in such a gross and unapologetic way that I could not forget. Well, I have had it. Consider scratching Jack's off your list of restaurants. There are far better establishments to support. read more

So I just signed up a Yelp account for the sole purpose of leaving this review. I have eat here before and had good food, the only thing I saw last time was the picture frame I was sitting next too was dusty. That's meh, whatever. This time, was different.(Around 9:30ish) I ordered the Captains Platter, and it came with side salad. Salad should be pretty easy to make and simple to get right, right? Well it was served first and the waitress was vary nice. It took me one bite and I noticed water, I pushed all of the salad to the side and tip the plate. It had more water in it then anything else. It was brimming with water. I showed it to the waitress and she was vary embarrassed and took it right away back and brought me a new one. On inspecting the second plate of salad the exact same thing was going on. I drained it onto my dinner plate and was so grossed out and didn't even take a bite. Apparently at Jacks, they think that storing the lettuce in a bowl of water is a good idea. It "keeps the lettuce fresh." Nooooooo this is so wrong. *Gag* The second thing was one of the sauces that came with the Captains platter. I think it was tarter sauce but I'm still not sure. I took one dip of it and noticed a vary odd and gross taste to it. I lifted it up and inspected the clear bottom. Whatever it was, was supposed to be white, but from the bottom I could see chucks of yellow fatty substance. The tarter sauce might have mayo in it, but for the fat to coagulate means it has been sitting in the refrigerator for a month or two. The third thing was the roach that crawled from the ice cream bucket crossed the counter and found it's way underneath the milk shake mixture. Needless to say I paid and left without asking for my ice cream. I'm not one to throw a fit or make a scene... so I walked away vary grossed out. I should have made a scene and threw a fit, but that won't get the owner to clean this place up. A yelp post, however is a more useful tool. To the Owner of Jack's Family Restaurant, get your business in order. What your running in downtown Chico is going to kill someone! I will most likely never go here again. The burgers are pretty good along with the fries. It just confused me at first, because the fries look like they're seasoned with popcorn butter. They taste like it too. The only problem I've ever had was the drive thru. They usually get my orders wrong. Maybe I just don't pronounce my words well enough for them. I dunno. read more
