Hawaiian Plate Combo
Patricia S.

Absolutely great experience! Fast friendly and tasty! My whole ohana enjoyed their meals and didn't waste a thing!

First time dining in after their renovation. New seating, definite upgrade from before. The New menus are colorful with many options. There are other items you can order like pickled bitter melon, ocean salad etc. posted on the walls and even catering photos. Service is efficient, courteous and friendly. Food is as delicious as ever. Hubs always gets the hamburger steak plate. I like the mild pastele and tripe stew. For a change I got their combination Hawaiian food. The chicken long rice is to die for- savor the broth, texture of the swollen long rice you can slurp or guzzle down. No shame- I add half a scoop of white rice to soak up the goodness and enjoy drinking it all straight from the little bowl. The haupia is excellent. I'm bringing home half the Kalua pig, the lomi salmon and the laulau- it's heavy and solid to enjoy for dinner. If you're a fan of local food with ethnic flair come here there's poke, kim chee, kalbi and even desserts now too.

A beautiful time capsule preserving the past of our home. The food was hot and fresh and perfectly done. Everything was seasoned so perfectly. The service is concise yet full of love, Perfect for weeknights or special occasions.

Happened to be in the terrible parking lot, so we decided to just stay for lunch. Never been so tried it out. Ala Carte items...little pricey for the amount you get, but nothing that broke the bank. - Ham hock luau - waaaay too sweet for me. But baby loooooved it. She mopped almost half. - Salt Meat watercress - loved it. Hubs said not enough salt. Baby drank some soup and ate some watercress. She said "gooood!" - Pastele - not bad. We got mild so baby could have...I think needed more of a kick but that's our fault. But baby ate like a 3rd of it. I wanna go back try more stuff...

We ordered takeout for lunch, got the Hawaiian combo plate with poi! Portions were good, and the laulau is super yummy! Very meaty and leaner than other laulaus yet still juicy. The laulau was my favorite! Chicken long rice and kalua pig were also great. Definitely will order from here again!

Welcoming staff! Cafeteria-Diner atmosphere giving off a familiar feeling. Ordered the Laulau & stew plate (tripe) and side squid luau to go. It was all onolicious. Kanak-attack afterwards!

Late Sunday night and everywhere else was either closing soon or packed. Jackie's Diner had a booth open... they seated us 45min before closing. First time here... took time to go through their menu - Hawaiian, Puerto Rican & Local options. We ordered the ginger shoyu chicken plate, beef stew plate & laulau/stew plate. Server was welcoming/friendly and entrees came out timely. We enjoyed everything... plates/bowls emptied. Left full and satisfied 10min before closing. Jackie's Diner was a very pleasant surprise - comfort local food at its best. Would definitely return and recommend.

Pastele Plate + Ala Carte Tripe Stew = $42!!!!!

I used to love Jackie's, and I still do. But I am afraid they are teetering on the line of become one of the next mom and pops to close with their outrageous pricing. I spent $42 dollars today on a Pastele Plate with an Ala Carter order of their Tripe stew. In no way am I here to knock them, or hate. I am here just stating facts. With the price hike of food in general in Hawaii. It's crazy to see where Jackie's Pricing has become so high. Do note that I went during peak aloha Friday hours today as well. Absolutely no parking in Waiamalu, had to drive around twice to get a parking stall, which took nearly 12 minutes. Only to walk in and see Jackie's filled with two parties. I am not saying an empty restaurant means lack of service. Their food has always been great. But to see their pricing, and the emptiness of their restaurant. Makes me wonder how much longer they will last if they need to hike their prices up again. Best of luck to them.

Lū'au Ham Hock

My friend wanted to meet up over local eats, and so when I looked places up that I haven't been to yet, I was drawn to Jackie's Diner because it's a longtime local establishment with some of Hawai'i's comfort food and staples. What got me intrigued was that it had lū'au ham hock on the menu, which I don't commonly see. The dish was nice and mellow, and not too salty like how ham hock can be. The waitress was very friendly and accommodating, checking on us every so often while we talked story to see if we needed water and asking us how we're doing. I enjoyed the casual atmosphere, and sitting at the booths to catch up. Mahalo Jackie's Diner!

Jackie's has been my go-to for Hawaiian food for years. It's THE BEST. Both in value (how much food you get) and price. I love that their combination plate comes with everything you could want, and that they serve A LOT of meat. The meat in the laulau is super generous, and I took home lots of leftovers. Also taste-wise, it's sooo good, truly the best Hawaiian food on Oahu in my opinion! Service here is always top tier. The aunties make you feel like family. I also love that it's really clean and they have a decent bathroom in the back. There's plenty of booth seating which makes for a more comfortable dining experience.

Run to this spot if you can. Food is delicious and portions are generous. Service as amazing, its like eating a friends house. Great spot for lunch and parking is plentiful in the lot.

But this place is excellent No matter how many you have... My usual is the pernil plate-- tasty pulled pork with your choice of sides. I usually like the yuca or plantains, and gandule rice. Tried the bean stew hanchules today--so good on the rice. Also got to watch them make the pasteles. Stevena the owner said that in Puerto Rico they only make this for special occasions. But here everybody wants it all the time, and she sells out of them. Small parking lot out front and outside seating. But with the heat in Waianae, I would definitely sit inside in the air-conditioning. Definitely one of my go to places on the west side. Always friendly service.

The rice and plantains are always so amazing tho. I've been wanting to try them out lately so I did a Door dash order and got their Steak Mofongo! It was good. A lot of garlic which I don't mind because I love garlic, a pina colada and Tres Leches. Since I did Door Dash and didn't sit in I'm sure the condensation made my tostones a little soft but they're normally so crunchy. I didn't dine in to get serviced and experience the inside of the restaurant for the ambiance and I know that does mess up food quality since I'm not getting it hot from the kitchen. I will need to dine in next time to get the true quality. Overall I will definitely try out the restaurant and dine inside for a change.

I'm gonna be honest and say that this is the best Pastele place I've been to on the island…read more I can't say that i can compare it to an actual sit down puerto rican restaurant, since I'm not familiar with many around the island, but in comparison to all the Pastele trucks and stops Ive been to around the island, this one takes the cake! I've been to stops along the windward side, while heading down toward Koolau. There used to be (not sure if its still there) Pastele stops along the road. One of the guys that used to serve Pastele along with poke had decent Pastele, but his business was way sketchy. The dude would always "accidentally" miscount the money. He also inaccurately counted up the total of your order in his head. Not to mention his erasable white board was unreadable which made the prices even harder to determine. So don't go to that guy! Instead go to Kai's. Great prices (you don't have to worry about getting ripped off) and their Pastele ingredients are unique in texture. I'm really not even sure if they were made out of the traditional banana base. But i don't really care because they were just so awesome! They offer a a few different types Pastele with different types of meat all at different spice levels. Also several other peurto rican dishes which i still have yet to try are available. Next time I'm getting the seafood Pastele. I'm so bummed because they sold out the last time. I'm a huge fan of seafood and Pastele so when i saw it on the menu i just thought it was the coolest mix. (if you've never had poke with your Pastele you should def. give it a try)

As I browsed to see which trucks I haven't tried at Taco'ako Tuesday, I came across Kai's Pastele…read moreShop which I haven't seen before. I guess I'm the first to review this truck because I couldn't find any other posting on Yelp: Pastele stew - 4 stars - For $7.50 plus 20 cents tax (yes, this truck is one of the few that the tax is not included in their price) it pretty much tasted like the stew I make, but they had more ingredients in it. I like how they blended in cabbage, olives,. chunks of tomatoes and some other spices other than your basic carrot, potato, onion and celery in it. They gave a pretty big serving with two scoops of rice and watercress salad. Pastele - 3 stars - For $4 you can order the pastele ala carte. It's something I haven't eaten before, so I can't say if it's better or worse than other places, but it was something different to try - if you like spicy, it has a spicy after-bite to it. Goes well with the stew. My friend ordered the taco, and he said it was ok. However, I can't rate it since I didn't try it. Service - 5 stars - the man and woman were very friendly and answered my questions on what a pastele is, but more so because I didn't know what a pastele was or tasted like, he gave me a free sample to try, which is something not many lunch trucks would do. They also sell tacos and burritos, but I have to go back to try those too before being a fan of the truck.

Best of all, we get to try so many new delicious local bites! We now look forward to our Thursday dinners! A few weeks ago we had already ordered our dinner at a couple other booths, but while waiting for our meals to be prepared, we took another lap around to plan for our next week's meal haha. I was excited to see a Puerto Rican food truck! It had been so long since we've had Puerto Rican; I was counting the days until we came back lol. I placed my order for the Tripleta sandwich and we took our stroll while waiting for our meal. I asked for no potato stix on my sandwich; personal preference, but I definitely know a lot of people who would've enjoyed the added crunch! It was ready just as we returned about 8 minutes later. Each bite was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and fresh. The bread was divine and soft, the best pair to the symphony of meats and veggies. I will definitely be trying the plantains next time! Along with more of their menu; everything sounds so yummers! For the meat sandwich lovers; the tripleta does not disappoint!!

She did offer us water, so I guess not completely lacking. Hubs got the Jamaican Oxtail - he said good. Kinda small, but we know the price of oxtail right now. Luckily even if my dish was also small, I had leftovers for him to finish. I got the PUerto Rican Fried Chicken - not breaded (even if menu said it was) which was better since I don't like tons of breading. Think just lightly dusted with flour. Cooked perfectly. Crispy and juicy. But the taste was very light. I had to add my garlic chili sauce to flavor it up. Yucca fries are super dry - is that how it is supposed to be? Maybe if thinner could just just crispy sticks? Good, but not a dish I would think of as Puerto Rican. I'll go back b/c I want to try other things... but kinda pricey for what we got.

Vegan curry dhal: The chickpeas were just the right consistency, not too mushy and still well-cooked. there was a really fragrant rice bed underneath and to give variety to the texture, a crispy fried kale leaf on top. It was not spicy, so you can add your own spice. Puerto Rican fried chicken: The star of the show! Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and great bite-size pieces. It came with a yucca fries, very unique and the great starch to accompany this chicken. Chancho fries: comes with a heaping mound of really good pork, a bit on the salty side but goes well with the thick steak fries. I wished it had a few more pieces of onions on it, but I can see how non-onion lovers wouldn't appreciate that. My cocktail was magical, it was the Old Hatten, an Old-Fashioned and a Manhattan mixed together. Mixed very expertly by the bartender, and the glass was fresh-smoked right before she poured my drink into it. Overall, I loved the experience and can't wait to come back to try the rest of their menu and more of their unique cocktails.
