When you've been out running around getting stuff done and suddenly realize you're hungry, have a definite craving for that one thing you can pretty much pull into Waimalu shopping center and pick one of ten restaurants to get that fix. That's where I was on this past Thursday and my fix was on Jackie's Diner. I really really wanted Pasteles but didn't want to drive to Wat Get Kitchen in Waipahu...next week I'll make that drive, so I stopped here and ordered their combo plate. Entering the restaurant there are booths lining one wall, and a poke bar, cashier register and kitchen on the other side. I was there a few minutes before 11:00 so I beat the lunch crowd and had the booth of my choice. A very pleasant young gal came and immediately placed a glass of ice water before me asking if I knew what I wanted or if I needed a menu. There is actually a menu board on the wall behind the cashier so I didn't need a menu just ordered the Pastele plate lunch to dine in. The plate came with one Pastele, two scoops of Gandule rice, a scoop of Mac salad and Bacalao salad. What's to say? Filled the need of hunger but didn't necessarily hit the spot. The Pastele was not as firm or substantial as my favorite place nor was it as tasty...if there's another time I'd order a spicy one. Same with the gandule rice...it's like everything is in the mix just not as flavorful as I wanted it to be. The Mac salad was really plain, no flavor in the least. The Bacalao salad was just salad, didn't appear to have any salted cod in it for flavor. Did I leave with my stomach feeling full, yes. Was I satisfied with my craving fulfilled, no. The lunch experience was made better by the great service. The server(s) checked if I needed additional water twice and to make sure I had everything I needed. Food three stars Service five stars ! For a diner style local restaurant that's wonderful. Parking in this strip mall is plentiful even during the lunch hours. They do a phenomenal takeout business and attend to the dine in customers too. read more

Jackie's Diner - Pastele plate - Hawaiian Near Me - Aiea, Hawaii

It's been a staple in my family since I was a kid. Ate here last night and things definitely changed. Ordered a pastele plate, which included 2 scoops of gandule rice, pastele, bacalao (salted cod fish in vinegar oil) salad, and Mac salad. Gandule rice was good, pastele was flavorless and had only like 3 pieces of meat, bacalao salad was great, and so was Mac salad. Pastele flavor has definitely changed, not like before and lacked the meat portion in there. Service: I dined out, can't rate service due to that. Ambiance: still the same like how I remembered, booth style dine-in. Walking in, all my child hood memories of this establishment came flooding in. read more

Best Hawaiian food I've had in a while. Such a great deal too. About $22 for a combo plate that has laulau, kalua pig, chicken long rice, lomilomi with rice or poi AND a small piece of haupia to finish. Staff were so friendly and family oriented. Felt the aloha in their hearts. Will definitely be back to try poke next time read more

Ive eaten at Jackie's Diner numerous times and they've really amped up the menu. Besides the regular Peurto Rican and Hawaiian food, they also have plate lunches like hamburger steak and a variety if poke - even a sashimi special! Service is always with a smile even when they are busy. For some reason, I always end up eating the pastele plate. I love the combination of the bacalao salad, pastele, Spanish rice and the spaghetti "mac" salad. Maybe it's because I don't cook Puerto Rican food? Who knows - I just love all the flavors combined. I did sneak a bite of hubby's hamburger steak. Couldn't resist biting into the homemade patty - yum. The diner has only a few tables, but we've always been lucky to get a seat. read more

Jackie's is your one-stop shop for Hawaiian/Puerto Rican food. They're located in Aiea, on the Waimalu Shopping Center. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot. It can get tight at times, but you can usually find one. The staff is friendly and attentive. There's are around 7-8 tables, so be patient. It's worth the wait. a hidden gem in central Oahu! Located in shopping center more known for place where Baldwins, Chun Wah Kam and Zippys is located is also where you can find Jackie's Diner. Delicious and affordable local dishes. After a hike in the Aiea area my friends and I were craving a healthy and great lunch. So glad we stumbled upon this place. Their poke bowls with a large variety of toppings hit the spot. To make it a big more healthy we were able to have the base half rice and half salad. Dessert of Ube ice cream topped off my meal perfectly. Service was great, we were checked on multiple times and our water glasses were constantly refilled with a smile! read more

I really wanted to like Jackie's Diner since I love Hawaiian food, but my experience wasn't great. I ordered the combination plate and a one-choice poke bowl. The lau lau was pretty dry, and they got my poke order wrong -- I asked for spicy shoyu poke but got spicy ahi instead. When I mentioned it, the server started talking to their coworkers about it instead of fixing the mistake, which was awkward because we could hear everything. Instead of swapping it out like most places would, they charged us extra for the poke we actually wanted. The food itself had potential, but the service and how they handled the situation made the visit disappointing. Hopefully they can work on customer service, because the menu does sound good. read more

I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised! There's a lot of options in this shopping center but my coworkers wanted to go here. The service was great and food came out super quick and super hot. I got the spicy poke bowl which came with your choice of 3 toppings. They have a lot of different Hawaiian foods and I also got a side laulau. I'm not super picky with laulau but this one was good with a nice amount of meat. The poke bowl was super good and better than I thought it would be at a good price too! Would definitely come for a quick lunch. read more

A friend who lives in Aiea suggested we eat here after hiking. The the menu consists of Hawaiian, Portuguese and Puerto Rican food. The nice part was you can order plates or a la carte. I ordered the poke bowl with ginger shoyu ahi and gochujang salmon. It came in a small bowl, but it was packed and absolutely delicious. My friend ready wanted to try the pestele but didn't want everything on the plate version. Nice part was she could order a la carte. Diner type joint with lots of diner style seating where groups of more than 6 or 7 will have to sit separately. Plenty of free parking when we went, but I could see it getting busy based on the number of businesses in this strip mall. Our server was a very happy and helpful young girl who made the experience delightful. I gave it a 5 star based on the service and quality of food for the price. Definitely a place I'd go back to. read more

I had been inside this shopping center many times but had never stopped by Jackie's until recently. I had read that they serve decent Hawaiian food, so I decided to order their Hawaiian Plate which comes with two entrees of your choice, lomi salmon, haupia, rice or poi for $15.50. I selected their lau lau and chicken long rice. It did not disappoint! The lau lau was juicy and flavorful, and the chicken long rice was super tasty! The lomi salmon was also delicious, but the real star of the show was the haupia! It had to have been the best haupia I've ever had in my life (and I've had many)! The prices are on par with many local diners, and they are generous with their portions. Service is full of aloha! It wasn't crowded when I arrived for lunch during the weekday, but the parking lot fills up quickly. I'd definitely recommend this place for their Hawaiian food, and I look forward to returning so I can try some of their other dishes. read more

I remember liking Jackie's Diner's Lomi Salmon a lot. Stopped by for a small side order. I was surprised inflation jacked the price up to $10 including tax for the small. It definitely was small but worth it. All of the ingredients tasted like they were "massaged" well, creating a supple texture and taste. The onions, green and white, were not overpowering which I prefer. I'd order the Lomi salmon again but won't pay for the $17.45 large. All I bought was the Lomi salmon but there were others ahead of me and dining at the tables, so there was a wait with only one server. She was cordial busy doing her job. I noticed that the kitchen area was neat and clean. Knowing that, gives the food much better appeal. read more

I hadn't been to Jackie's Diner in over 15 years, so I treated this visit like my first time. Decided to order à la carte to share and tried the Salted Meat with Watercress, Tripe Stew, and Hamhock Luau. The flavors were great, classic and well-done. However, the portions were surprisingly small for the price, about 8oz each dish and totaled over $50. Service was okay, but the counter setup seems to limit visibility; when the host went behind the cooking counter, we weren't checked on. The restaurant itself was clean and comfortable, which I appreciated. I might give it another shot and try ordering a plate instead to see if it's better value for the money. Overall, good food but mixed feelings on portions and service. 3/5. read more

Craving hawaiian? Jackies! Craving pasteles? Jackies! Craving for one local plate lunch? Jackies! YUP. They got it. And taste great too, but I gotta say Pastele plate no can be beat. Best and FAVORITE place for Pastele plates. I haven't had any other pastele plate that tasted better than theirs. The pasteles are nice, not mushy and the right amount of heat (for spicy). Grandule rice works perfectly to compliment the pastele, as well as that mac-noodle salad and bacalao salad. Just perfect. Their parking gets busy per usual, during lunch hours because it's in Waimalu. Everyones looking for a good place to eat and Waimalu center seems to have a place for everyone. Theres a few seats and tables for dine-in. Or call for take out. Customer service is always great when we come. Theres really nothing bad to say about this place! read more

We walk by Jackie's but haven't eaten here in years. I was hungry for Hawaiian food so we decided to try it and I'm glad we did. Service - 5 stars. We were greeted warmly and told we could choose which booth we wanted to sit in. Server then came by quickly to ask about our drinks, and was very friendly, drinks came right away. Another server came by soon after we got our drinks and took our order. Food came relatively quick, too. Both servers checked on us to be sure everything was ok. Ambiance - 3.5 stars. Looks like any local diner, a bit dated but I think they redid the floors to a wood grain plank flooring which gave it a more Hawaiian atmosphere. I liked that they have patched the seats (so many places have cracked seats since Covid cleaning solutions...). The patches were really well done in both color and workmanship so it took me a minute to realize it had been patched with a soft, comfy, fabric like patch. Restaurant is clean. Food - 4 to 4.5 stars. Hubby ordered the BBQ ribs. We had to ask to be sure they were pork ribs. Server explained that it was and the Kalbi is their beef ribs. Plate came with two very large pork ribs. Flavor was great, meat was moist, tender and almost fall off bone, easy to cut the meat off the bone. Came with a scoop of spaghetti noodle mac salad (our fav). Salad was good but could have used a tad more seasoning, hubby liked it - he ate it all. He also liked the Kim chee and bean sprouts. Also came with two scoops of white rice. He enjoyed his meal and even had some leftover since the ribs were really meaty. I had the laulau /tripe stew combo. They remove almost all of the ti leaves (hurray) and only leave a strip (for looks?). Pork in the laulau was moist and had just the right amount of salt. I know some reviews said the laulau was dry, but I thought it was just right, both leaves and pork. I usually find the pork in laulau dry but not this time. Size was ok, I've had bigger, but there was a good amount of meat but also enough leaves. I personally prefer more leaves but know most people prefer plenty of pork so I think it would satisfy majority of people. Tripe stew was delicious! Tripe pieces were just right, not mushy and there was a lot. Flavor of the soup/saice was great, with the expected slightly peppery flavor. Came with a couple of potato pieces that were cooked just right, not mushy, and a few small pieces of round onion. I scooped up all the soup because it was so good. Ate it all. Had a little pork from my laulau leftover (almost always do) and because it was notcdry, I even opted to take it home, which I rarely do. Opted for all rice (I like mac but try not to eat it too often) so I had way too much since the plate comes with two scoops already. Menu is extensive. Will be back to try some other items. read more

Jackie's Diner is a hidden gem in Aiea. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. [FOOD] I had the LAU LAU & STEW PLATE opting for the tripe stew with poi. While the tripe stew was okay the LAU LAU was excellent. The leaves in the lau lau was really moist and had a great flavor, same thing with the meat inside though I wish the fat was little bit bigger. The POI had a nice middle ground between being sweet and sour, suffice it to say there was nothing left when I was done. That being said the food was so good that I will definitely come back and eat it again and again. [SERVICE] The service was excellent. I asked if the poi was sour but she wasn't sure so she disappeared for a second and returned with a spoon of it so I could judge it for myself which I really appreciated. Throughout the meal she would come back several times to see if everything was alright. [RECOMMENDATIONS] I highly recommend the COMBINATION PLATE, which comes with lau lau, kalua pork, chicken long rice, lomi salmon and your choice of rice or poi along with haupia for dessert. Overall, I had a great experience at Jackie's Diner. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal in Aiea. read more

Full disclosure: We catered from Jackie's after a high recommendation from our family friend, and Jackie's was spectacular! So this reviews not only their food but also catering. We wanted Hawaiian foods and chose kalua pork, rice, chicken long rice, lomi lomi salmon, poi, lau lau, haupia, and their newly offered squid luau. Plus, they threw in mac salad! Kalua pork so savory BUT not as salty on purpose for those who need to lower their sodium intake; so they also have a extra Hawaiian salt on the side for you! Went great with the rice. Chicken long rice so good, with noodles on the thicker side, so savory. Pork lau lau so tender and filled with lots of meat. Also full disclosure I'm not a fan of lomi salmon, so I skipped it. I also don't normally care for squid luau because in the past it's always been too "fishy" or sweet. But I was encouraged to try Jackie's because they just pht it back on their regular restaurant menu, and it was FANTASTIC. Savory, not a hint of fishyness - my wife has it with their ono poi (I'm not a poi person, so that's all I'll comment on poi, but people seemed to enjoy it), and for leftovers today even ate the squid luau cold and loved it. EVERYONE RAVED ABOUT IT and are still coming up to us raving about it! I find it funny how *this* item has garnered so much attention, but locals love good squid luau I guess! And also normally I don't comment on mac salad, for my son who doesn't care to waste carbs etc on it, tried it and for him it's the best he's ever had and had multiple servings, which was weird. I thought it was pretty good but not quite to his reaction haha. Haupia is also very good - a touch of creaminess, nicely flavorful, not overly sweet, very complimentary to the whole spread. A quick word on the catering side: we hired two of their staff, and they were awesome: cheerful, always pleasant, always on the lookout to help where needed. We also decided to spend extra money to rent everything because we had more than enough to worry about, but that would be an area to potentially save some money. Of course, Ellie, who owns Jackie's, is very easy to work with, super nice, willing to work with you on your needs. We absolutely made the right decision to cater from her! read more

I came here for the first time with hubby and daughter. We walked in and was told to have a seat anywhere. It wasn't too busy so that was good. Our waitress was nice and asked us if we just wanted waters and I said yes. We got iced waters with the annoying paper straw lol I looked at the menu and everything looked so good. Hubby and I got the pastele meal. I got the beef pastele with mild flavor along with two scoops white rice. It's a $2.00 charge if you upgrade to Spanish rice. I chose the tripe stew. This was delicious as well. I love tripe when it's soft and flavored with the soup. Hubby got the spicy beef pastele with the beef stew. He upgraded to the Spanish rice. I was already full from my meal. I definitely want to come back and try other dishes they offer especially the desserts. Looks so delicious. Highly recommend. Plenty of parking up front. read more

Located in the Waimalu Shopping Center, I'd consider Jackie's Dinner to be a good place to grab a quick bite to eat. Parking is plentiful and this place is not hard to find. When entering, we were told where to sit and provided menus and water. The menu is quite extensive, ranging from local-style favorites like loco moco, squid luau, and poke. We ended up ordering one of the special dishes that came with pastele, corn and corn beef luau. The pastele was flavorful and soft, whereas the corned beef luau was sweet and savory. I did enjoy that they didn't shy away from the amount of corn beef. The dish also came with pastele rice which tasted very good. Their Mac salad was different as they used spaghetti noodles instead of the traditional Macaroni pasta. The Mac salad was alright... tons of Mayo and not much seasoning. The service, though, was very friendly and kind. Aunty was very nice and was always checking in on us. The food also came very quickly (within 10 min of ordering). The restaurant, itself, was small and casual with only a small amount of booths (maybe around 7). I don't think this place is good for groups, but maybe just for a small family. Overall, good place to eat and I'll definitely be back to try the other items on their menu! read more
