Things didn't start well. I called in advance and asked if there would be any difficulty in just showing up with 4 or 5 people on Thursday night-- without a reservation "No problem" I was assured. You guessed it, there WAS a problem. The place was packed and we were put on a waiting list... estimated wait: 45 minutes. In the meantime, I found a small table for two in the enclosed area in front. We turned it into a table for four. No objections from the staff. We ordered food (the chicken poke bowl seems to have been the outstanding dish of the night, though I was very happy with my flatbread). So far a 3-star rating, though Montauk Wave Chaser on tap is a big plus. But the BIGGEST plus, earning an extra star, is the waitstaff. Never a complaint that we took a reserved table. In fact, a waiter brought us an extra chair from inside as more of us showed up. Attentive, full of humor, fuller of tolerance (we're not an easy bunch), the staff made the night for us. Just great people with great attitudes, going out of their way to do the best they can. Yes, it's crowded and noisy... but oh so much fun! I was very impressed by the flatbread pizzas, the crust was both chewy and crispy and the combinations were really tasty (both the BBQ Chicken & the Sweet, Salty, Spicy). Service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere of Jackdaw is a mix of classy, casual, and romantic and makes for a great night out with friends or an intimate date. The bathrooms were updated and clean (which is especially appreciated for a bar!) and the music played was enjoyably nostalgic. My partner and I had a 9:45 reservation at Jackdaw. We were seated promptly at an outside table, and a young man brought a bottle of water with two very small glasses. Thank goodness for those glasses, because pretending we were pouring oversized shots of tequila kept us busy for a few of the next fifteen minutes we spent waiting for a server. When she eventually appeared, with no apologies and a curt "Ready to order?", drink orders were whisked away and delivered by someone else a few minutes later. And that was the last we saw of the waitstaff until I flagged her down after another 15 minutes and asked if we could still order food. This was a really bad experience created by one of the more detached service operations I've encountered in life. For example, having ordered two appetizers and two entrees, one would think they'd be fired and brought to your tiny two-top table in that order. Nope. All four arrived within moments of one another, which left plates literally hanging over the edge and no room for four drinking glasses and an unnecessary bottle of lukewarm tap. So, we raced through the apps in order to free some space. She had the tuna tartare, which looked wonderful, whereas I was presented with an elegant row of shrimp bao buns. I have absolutely no doubt we would have enjoyed these if given the time; the plating of the two dishes was substantially better than any other aspect of the visit. As for the rest, there was a tasty but uninspired buffalo chicken sandwich, and a Jackdaw salad for the lady, which is burrata and arugula accompanied by figs, prosciutto, strawberries, and two dressings. Sounds like a mess in my opinion, but some people will eat burrata out of a shoe - then there are people like me who would prefer the shoe for texture and flavor. At any rate, the audience was enthusiastic, which is all that matters. I have no idea why I ordered essentially two sandwich courses, except that there are only four mains on the menu that aren't either that or burrata salads. Food is clearly not the focus here, but it should be, because they do it fairly well. All I can say is I wish I hadn't, because it was too much in the way of bread-y things. Look, judging from the noise inside, it was a very busy night, and nobody's perfect. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back, but if I'm being honest with myself, I probably won't. There was no one feature that would prompt my return, and plenty of reasons to not do so - chief among them being that life is much shorter than the list of restaurants I'd like to visit. read more
