Four stars because the upstairs patio is way too cramped! We waited 15 minutes for a patio table, got there, and saw that it was way too packed. We opted for the downstairs dining area and we had a wonderful, funny waitress. Our meals were divine. I had the Crispy Sweet Thai Chicken, which was beyond delicious! My husband says that the soup he had as a starter, beer and cheddar, was the best he's ever had. This is coming from a very picky eater! Absolutely amazing, can't remember the bartenders name (male/tall/dirty blonde) was friendly and inviting. Sat on the rooftop bar because there wasn't a table with shade, which worked out for us having to go sit at the bar. Within moment bartender (insert unknown name) informed us of all the beer, very knowledgeable..... and from there just magic. I over heard him say he had been there since day one which is probably why I'm taking the time to write this! Also the woman manager did her job great, came and checked in. Food great, clean, bathrooms clean, front door was informative. From California and not sure when I'd be able to visit in future, but if and when I do I'll be sure to go back! read more

We stopped in Kingston during our way Toronto and have the lunch here. The location is good, several minutes to the riverside and the there is a parking lot just cross the street. We ordered the burger, beef nacho, and chicken bow-tie. The food was good, higher than our expectations. The waitress Katie was also nice! We mentioned that we were quite in a hurry, so she helped and the food came really fast (with the certain quality). If we came to this city again, we will come to this restaurant again. read more

The food was terrible. The guacamole tasted like lemon. Everything that was ordered was bland and not very good. However the service was amazing specifically a server named Monica who served with a smile. If it hadn't been for her I dont think we would have a had a good time. read more

On Monday May 7th 2 friends and I went to the rooftop patio. I got the salmon dish which was excellent! Kudos to the kitchen!! Our waitress forgot to bring us pre sets so when our food came out we had nothing to eat it with. I asked a passing waitress for some cutlery and she sighed at me and walked away. She returned shortly with the cutlery and slammed it down on the corner of our table without saying anything. My friends and I thanked her and she ignored us. As a server I was appalled by this behaviour and frankly embarrassed for Jacks. I also got a fishbowl which was cracked when I got it so I asked for a different bowl, the next one had at least 25 may flies in it (which I realize can't be helped) and at the end of the bowl I sucked a large piece of glass up the straw. I informed my waitress of this and she said "oh sorry about that" and walked away. I was surprised that she returned WITHOUT a manager and never asked if I was okay. I'm deeply disappointed with my experience as I love jacks. I realize that it was an accident that the glass ended up in my drink but it could have seriously hurt me had I swallowed it or bit down as it was extremely sharp. Accidents like these can be prevented if the bartender rinses these bowls first. The waitress who's name was Jamie brought me my full bill and sent me on my way. read more

I really love the rooftop patio atmosphere! Even the downstairs bar is great for watching sports. The food is alright. I really want to like the menu but it's just not that great. I always try to order something different and then eating half of my husbands chicken fingers and poutine out of food envy! The cocktails are pretty decent though! I had the strawberry fishbowl and not only was it huge it was also pretty tasty! I would get it again but next time I'll have it made with soda water instead of sprite! read more

I used to like Jack Astor's in Toronto about 6 years ago. And this location in Kingston is beautiful and fun. A nice space with very decent wait staff. It seems that Kingston people are spoiled for good staff. How can front of house staff be so energetic and polite and funny? Just solid decent, people. Like Toronto 20 years ago. Honestly, that is enough to recommend the place. It will have to do. The food is high-volume fare, and a lot of mistakes are made. Nachos came out with burnt chili and no cheese, replaced by burnt boneless chicken. Jack Astor's on John Street in Toronto seems to be the gold standard. And, though the venue is worth a visit, from a limited taste test, this Jack Astor's has a kitchen that seems to have been trained at the Flying J. Could have been a bad night. It was a Monday, so the A team might have been sleeping it off, but just terrible. Might try again. Be aware if you dare. Worst case- enjoy the lovely venue and wonderful front of house team. Update: Went back the next day, a Tuesday, ordered three mains and three apps (calamari, chicken and quesadilla). All apps were above average! The watermelon salad main was solid. Chicken sandwich was meh. The burger, unfortunately, was about the size of a burnt child's burger from McDs. Sorry guys, That one was a complete miss. All in all, up one star! Update 2: The fact the Management replied to this review is amazing. This type of professionalism is quite rare and speaks volumes re: their dedication to the customer, which is, again, obvious from their front of house staff. I am raising one star, again, because, really, how could you not stop here if you go to Kingston? What a location. Came to Jack Astor's on Saturday night, understandably it was busy. We were waiting for a seat on the patio and were given an hour wait time. After an hour and a half with no call back, our party walked in to request a seat inside as at this point we were ready to eat anywhere - inside or outside! Having waited this long already, we wanted to eat at this restaurant! Once inside we explained our request to the hostess, and her reply was laughter. We stood for another 15 minutes in the front door before we were seated in a corner table where we were poorly waited on. Sad to say we waited almost 2 hours to eat here, followed by poor service - kitchen was out of specialty menu items, server bringing the wrong drinks, and checking back rarely. If you've been to one Jack Astor's, you've been to all of them. It's a chain restaurant, but it's a delicious one. I've been to the Kingston location a few times and the service has always been prompt, pleasant, and professional. The portions are solid -- I'm obsessed with their Pad Thai bowls. If I'm trying to take picky eaters out who don't want to try new things, this is the place for me. Plus this location is enormous and the rooftop patio is gorgeous. Personally, I was terrified sitting so close to the edge of the building, but everyone else had a good time. All in all, good food, friendly waitstaff, and decent atmosphere. I'll be back. read more

I feel like this is a sports fans dream bar. I definitely find it better than the average chain restaurant (Montana's, BP..) I have attended with a girlfriend on a middle level, my boyfriend on the rooftop and most recently with a group on the main level. Although I do love the rooftop, it is forever crowded and wait listed. The middle level is quieter and more pleasant. The main level with the huge screen was great to catch the game on, had great live talent. As for service, we've been treated great from what I recall from all experiences. To this day we've ordered the lobster & crab dip, calamari, burgers, steak, chicken parm, spinach dip, and poutine. All super tasty! The lobster & crab dip I'm going back for alone. I got the memphis steak last time & it was cooked to perfection. The potato that came with it was little to be desired. However, their poutine is great! I judge restaurants on their gravy a lot. So Jack's definitely passed the test & is worth returning based on my experience. I write lengthy reviews, I know! Jack Astors will never let you down. The food is exactly the same at every location. This location is really nice and does not disappoint, one of the few downtown locations i'm aware of. I've only been there in the winter so I cant comment, but I hear the patio is dope. They have Mackinnon Brothers on tap! Its nice to see a large chain supporting local craft brewers. If you are like me and you love craft beer but are tired of the hipsters, then head to Jacks and squeeze up to the bar between some Coors light chugging Leafs fans and order a Mackinnon Crosscut. The bathroom situation here is a little peculiar with single rooms on the main floor and the main washrooms all the way at the back of the second floor. read more

We have to move downstairs due to a lightning storm, but there was a person down there that frankly I didn't want to have to deal with. I ordered the Tuna Mango Avocado Salad and requested that the tuna be fully cooked, not just seared. After some time, the waiter returned and informed me that they could not do this as head office had chided them about altering their signature dishes in this way. So I asked if it would be possible to swap the tuna for fully-cooked chicken. Apparently this was an acceptable alteration, which seems to be a greater alteration than the one I had initially requested. I dissected many fish during the course of my career, so my dislike of eating under-cooked fish is rooted in many observations that I will not share here. What I cannot fathom is why a customer, who is shelling out good money for the food, cannot have their meat left on the grill for an additional couple of minutes? This would not be a problem if it were steak. The whole thing seems very silly to me and I will not be in a hurry to return anytime soon. read more

I had a terrible experience at this location. I won't be coming back. I brought family from out of town and was very disappointed. Customer service was poor from the start. We had four small children and were first offered a tall table downstairs instead of one of the (many) available more appropriate average-sized tables upstairs (the booster seats aren't able to be secured, they should not hand them out for those tall downstairs tables). Our server was changed, and this wasn't explained. Instead of explaining, she told us "your server will be with you shortly" as if she hadn't taken a drink order from us already (which she had). Our new server informed my sister that the food she wanted wasn't available, and instead of coming back to her after everyone else had ordered, she left. We had to wait for her to come back to put in her order. The only reason the server did come back was to tell us that her iPad had frozen and deleted our order, so we all had to order again. We didn't have all our drinks (or even water) until an hour after we arrived. When water came, it came three at a time and still took ten minutes. So painful. Our beers finally came, but they were warm in about an inch of ice. My sister has an anaphylactic allergy to coriander/cilantro, and no one confirmed that her food was safe to eat. Most people's fries, a young child's pasta, and someone's fish was completely cold. The whole piece of fish was left on the plate uneaten, and the server didn't ask if everything was okay. Instead she joked that "it's a big piece" and just took it away. There were flies all over, and some mashed potatoes on the floor when we arrived were still not cleaned up when we left. The bathrooms were so dirty. The bills took twenty minutes to arrive after we were able to ask (which had already been awhile) and when they came there were things on that we had never received (including two drinks that we did order but didn't get). We complained to someone who wasn't our server that we had been there for an hour without getting water, and no manager ever came over. Some people's dinner plates hadn't been cleared by the time we finished dessert. I'm sure this was a perfect storm of just everything going wrong, but I mean, it was everything. My favourite aspect of this venue is the diversity of the menu. There's something for everyone. I go here so often that I find that the quality of the service and the food is a hit and miss situation. The servers are barely trained and lack decent manners. Do they hire servers based on appearance alone? Seems like it. Some dishes fall apart the moment you try to take a bite. Everything is messy when it shouldn't be so I wouldn't recommend this as a date location. Still reasonably priced, filling, and delicious. read more

To start off, the service was slow and inattentive. When we walked in, the host was on the phone having a conversation in hushed tones for a minute or so while we were waiting for her to acknowledge our existence, which ended with a very personal note of "I have to go babe.". When she eventually asked us where we would like to be seated, it then took several minutes for her to be able to contact someone to check if there was seating in a certain section of the restaurant. After waiting, we were asked to head upstairs to be seated, where we then waited for another 5 minutes, until eventually a server (which was not one out of the 5 people whom where chatting to one another behind the seating podium) came up to us asking what we were waiting for. We explained and after that we were then seated by one of the members of the chatting cackle. Our drinks took 15min to arrive, the food took about 30min to 40min after the drinks had arrived, and we patiently waited for the bill for 20min until finally going up to investigate what had happened. The server that we had was new, friendly, and trying his best it seemed and was just overwhelmed it seemed by the lack of work any of the other more senior employees were doing. We were unable to find him for a certain amount of time but it seems there should be protocols in place when one server gets busy, instead of having the other ones just stand around at the host table chatting, which is how we found another group of servers when we went to check on the status of our bill. As soon as I requested to speak to someone in charge, all the servers seemed to scatter or had become attentive to the situation at had asking what was needed and what they could do to help. The bill go to us within a minute and we paid. The manager caught us on our way out but was also unapologetic, saying he couldn't help because we had already paid the bill. He also did not care to listen to the concerns about slow and inattentive service, as his responses were either "I know" or simply just a shrug . I guess it didn't matter to them that they were losing customers. Just to show that I do no when to give a compliment, I want to add that the food exceeded expectations for bar food and both of us in our party enjoyed what we had ordered. This is why I am rating the restaurant two stars, instead of just one and definitely recommend the Chicken & Feta sandwich if you are still set on going here after reading the run up to this conclusion. read more

the food here is good, fresh and flavourful but nothing outstanding that you cannot eat at a competitor eatery. I must say ladies, the service sucks if you are a female, the female wait staff cater specifically to the men. Women are paying customers too so if you can allow yourself to think outside the box, we deserve the same service. I have been to the rooftop patio where we were seated but all the guys were served first and when we approached the manager about no service (whilst 3 female servers were standing around giggling) he offered us a $25 gift certificate for poor service, yet we still didn't get our beer? We left and have not been back for over a year and 1/2. Last weekend a few friends and I were walking by from The Red House (check it out people - great bar) and decided to see the city from the rooftop patio at Jack Astor's however due to the cool night, patio was not open, hence we sat downstairs for a beer. Half way through the drink we could not believe the OFFENSIVE music videos displaying women as sex objects blaring across the GINORMOUS tv screens. Again the motto/ blatant marketing theme here for Jack Astors is that women are mere sex objects, not to mention the uniforms the females have to wear. The putz behind the bar was wearing pants and a t-shirt and the waitress was scantily dressed in some shameful tacky black outfit. Will not go back until they clean up their corporate act. read more
