Korean new year seollal presentation for my son's class
Chris L.

Just celebrated Korean new year with my son's school by reading a book and bringing in rice cake from here! Ordered the honey rice cake balls that come in three colors - so good and perfect - like a soft Korean gusher! The ingredients are rice flour, sugar, salt, soybean oil, and water and luckily we had no allergies in the class. It was a big hit with the teachers and staff. And of course the kids! Even some non Asian kids asked for seconds! For orders, you have to order 10 pounds (each packet is a pound) minimum for $95. But if you don't want that much, you can call the week of and ask them what they have that week and then order then (they bake the goods depending on the demand that week). Pickup is easy as they have a small driveway you can park in or street parking.

핑크 하트설기 + 첫돌 떡 pink heart rice cakes and 첫돌 first birthday Dohl rice cakes

I got both First Birthday 첫돌 First Dohl and pink heart rice cakes (하트설기), one tray each. They were easy to work with over the phone, though I communicated with them in Korean and not in English. Each rice cake is wrapped in cling wrap so it's hygienic and easy to hand out. They take checks, cash, and Venmo.

Came here to pick up some Korean goodies before hanging out with a friend. When I walked in, the shop/kitchen was dim so I thought it was closed. You're basically walking straight into the kitchen so don't be shocked - you're in the right place. Near the cash register are the rice cakes on sale for the day. The lady that was present pointed out which ones were the day-old ones. I chose 2 fresh packs. I noted that there was no menu/price tags anywhere. The lady confirmed that it was cash only. When I asked for the total cost, she said $11. I remember all the other reviews saying it was $5 each, so I asked her if it was actually $5. I noticed that she hesitated and then she said that it's $5.50 each, but while I was taking time to dig out money from my wallet, she then said that she'd give me a $1 discount for a total of $10. Not sure if the prices have just gone up or if she was just trying to charge me more since I couldn't speak Korean. The rice cakes are pretty yummy but harden and get moldy (if not refrigerated) in 1-3 days. My friend and I couldn't finish all of them in time, so we suggest buying only what you can eat.

The Korean on the front says Jong Rho (the J. R. part) Tteok-Jip (literally "rice-cake house", aka the "Rice Bakery" part). A Tteok-Jip is a store that makes tteok, a traditional Korean rice "cake" made with glutinous rice flour and steamed, not baked. Think of it as the Korean version of Japanese mochi. It's also Anglicized as Dduk, ddeok, or duk and you'll see this variety of spellings on restaurant menus. People often think of Tteok in savory dishes like the chewy cylinders of Tteok-boki (sauted rice cakes in spicy sauce https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/obtown-oriental-bbq-chicken-town-oakland?select=jP4K9HpoiOgtQBuDJGY93g&userid=DsHsuhUvyyW_75zFcJxkKw) or sliced into thin discs in Tteok-guk (rice cake soup) which is pretty much all you see at restaurants, but Tteok can also be a dessert / snack item and at J. R. they make both types (plain for cooking & flavored for snacking https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/j-r-rice-cake-bakery-hayward-2?select=58GUpjVV-LwQhK5JkDNs_w). Each tray is $4 or so. I had an errand to run across the street and picked up a tray of brown rice tteok with adzuki beans and dried fruit (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/j-r-rice-cake-bakery-hayward-2?select=vKPX0qAZp9osntV55mfm_g) which were semi-sweet from the dried fruit. If you're watching the wallet, Day-Olds are just $2 for the tray (https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/j-r-rice-cake-bakery-hayward-2?select=SUCH76DfaQMO37bUUP-VTg), but will harden up sooner so I wouldn't pull the trigger on non-plain ones of those unless you have plans to eat them pretty soon. I think this is the only place in the Bay that makes their own outside of Santa Clara.

Red and white bean. All this for only $4!

A small mom & pop place. The lady who helped me was very nice and informative. There were two counters - one with the fresh items and one with the day olds (half price). The lady was very honest and when I went to grab something on a lower shelf, she told me that it was more than a day old and that I probably didn't want it. I ended up going with the fresh rice cake filled with red bean and white bean paste (see photo). It was only $4 for the whole package! Note, I actually went to buy regular rice cake (duk) but they were sold out already (I went around 2PM on a Wed).

$5 (4/23/16) rice cakes with white bean filling

Been wanting to buy some rice cakes from here for a really long time. Finally got the chance to do so this past weekend and it was a total disappointment. Walked in, place did not look at all in business. Per other Yelper, we had to call out to the back for assistance. The only thing that was there for sale was, I believe 4 different kinds of rice cakes, 2 trays each. Ended up only getting one tray, rice cakes with white bean filling. Not good at all.

Great stuff. My family's go to place when we want rice cakes in bulk. Small shop so parking can sometimes be tricky, but so worth it.

Not only are you able to purchase from their bakery case, you can also request to have desserts made for special events! (In advance of course.) I very much enjoy their macarons and fresh fruit tarts. They also added Banana Matcha to their menu when it became a craze, and I 10/10 would recommend it. They use high quality matcha powder (Marukyu Koyamaen) for their drinks. This is one of the few things that drew me into their cafe. The baristas are extremely friendly and have a wonderful sense of humor, AND they support small businesses! While you wait for your order, you can browse their shelf full of crystal candies, matcha sets, candles, and they may also have Natsume matcha tins available! (This is not the matcha they use in their drinks, but it's nice to have other options available to buy.) ^^ So if you're in the East Bay and are looking for a business to support, go to Always Yours Bakery Cafe (they're also available on the Too Good To Go app)! They have beautiful outdoor seating available, as well as cutesy seating indoors. Not sponsored or anything, I just wanted to review one of my favourite cafes in Castro Valley. ^^

I usually go to the Pleasanton spot but happened to be nearby and wanted to get a cake for Mother's day. I understand that because it is a holiday that they were going to be busy, but it was incredibly disorganized inside with people cutting in and out of line at the counter and the staff were too busy to redirect customers or take orders. Incredibly frustrating as there were several instances of people just cutting their way in line and just placing their orders/getting served ahead of everyone else by just walking straight up to the register. When it came to my turn the staff asked for my order then turned around and instead went and took care of someone who had cut in front straight to the register to buy bread when I had already been waiting in line for awhile. They did not even bother asking if they had been waiting there before or had cut the line, the staff just skipped me just because that person had gone straight up to the register. Incredibly frustrating situation and I just did not want to get into it with the line cutter or the staff. Was still able to pick up the cake but I would skip this place since they can't even set up a system for a line/queue. Go to the Pleasanton spot instead and skip this spot.
