My review is strictly based on their cakes. Unfortunately I don't have much experience eating their food but their cakes are absolutely amazing! Over the years my family has tried the following cakes: peanut butter, Oreo, strawberry shortcake, carrot, chocolate jubilee, black/white, chocolate chip, chocolate fudge and last but not least German Chocolate Cake! The German Chocolate is by far without a doubt the best cake we've had. All the cakes are rich in flavor and if you like chocolate, the JPace cakes are for you. I love this place for the most part but your experience will depend entirely on who you get at the counter. If you happen to get the kid who wears an ear pod and then asks you "what happened" when you order your Sandwhich like he doesn't know he works at a deli just leave. He is going to make you whatever Sandwhich on whatever bread he feels. You might be the only customer in there and it may take him 2-3 business days to make you the wrong sandwhich. read more

I moved to the Seaport area last month and my new apartment is a two-minute walk from J. Pace. It's a blessing to have this gem around the corner. Their sandwiches are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the Caprese sandwich. I could eat one of those per day. Their salads are also really good and their breakfast menu is great. It's a small and charming mom-and-pop kind of market but if you're in a pinch and need something at the last minute, they usually have it. They also have a large selection of cheeses, beer and wine. In addition, the employees are always happy and welcoming to the customers. When I had a housewarming party, I called to ask about catering. They gave me an email address and the process was painless. They had my sandwich platter ready the next day at the exact time I asked for. J Pace serves a variety of hot and cold sandwiches along with a hot food bar that includes pasta, sausage/peppers, chicken cacciatore, and more. They also have an actual deli area, small meat counter, and various other grocery items. We've had catering from them before for their pasta and everyone loved it! Decent pricing for the area at around $10 for lunch and it's a great location for when you want a great sub. Tip: get the Italian sub! read more

The baguettes were right out of the oven and sooooo good. The chicken wasn't the least bit dry. The salad had a ton of veggies. They even threw in a few, huge fresh baked cookies... We had heard a lot about this place and it was right around the corner from our hotel, so we thought we'd walk to it for breakfast one morning. This place is awesome! It's a convenience but also sells some pretty great food! I got a great club sandwich after standing at the counter debating some of their many many breakfast and lunch items for about ten minutes. There was a nice outside seating area on the sidewalk too so you can watch the ships coming into the harbor or the trucks going by that pick up the things coming into the harbor. I checked the tips on Yelp to see what we good, and the Big Dig sandwich came up many times. The Big Dig is prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted red peppers and basil. The mozzarella was fresh, and cut to order, and the prosciutto was tender and flavorful. Unfortunately, they were out of basil an hour before close, so spinach was substituted. It's been my first time coming to seaport, and it was amazing to step into J pace& Son. I ordered Alex the best( chicken breast, feta cheese and bacon sub). I never expected it would be such a big portion for just 10 dollars. 3 scoops of feta cheese, three whole grilled chicken breast, 3-4 slices of fried bacon, and a foot long bread. All just for 10. It was super delicious and I only finished half for lunch, then save the other half in my fridge for dinner. Besides, I took a bag of grape, which is much sweeter than what I bought in other stores. I went to this deli based on previous reviews and was not disappointed. The sub was great and so was the service. Behind the deli were two employees, one of which was in training. As my chicken sub was being worked on, I overheard the employee say "And if there's not enough meat on the sandwich, always add an extra piece, that way you keep he customer happy and they come back." If you're looking for ANYTHING for breakfast, lunch, munch, crunch, or dinner, you're going to find it a J. Pace & Son in the Seaport District. From great pre-prepared foods--salads, sammies, ethnic plates, parfaits, yogurts, etc.--to REALLY GREAT prepared-while-you-wait foods--breakfast sammies and killer subs--this place will not disappoint. Sure, there could be a line, after all the place ROCKS and it is located smack in the center of all Seaport District things (Blue Hills concert venue, Boston's biggest convention center, the Harborwalk, etc.), but if you are patient, you're hunger will be rewarded. There's a coffee station where you can make your own coffee while you wait for your order(s) and there are restrooms around the indoor cafe area. I am fairly certain that they offer Wifi, though I've never had the need to use or ask for it. My personal favorites are ANY of the suggested subs (the Haddock sandwich is DA' BOMB) listed on the big board behind the prep station. Veggies are always fresh due to quick turnover and their portions are hearty. They also have all the sides, snacks, and salads you could ever need, and, if'n you're in need of a cold frosty beverage, or a bottle of wine, they got that too, along with a generous assortment of bottled drinks. Come to think of it, they even have freshly baked cookies near the front check-out! Bazinga! You can eat inside or outside or take your take-out to the nearby harbor side and eat while enjoying a prime view of the Harbor. Or, if you want to take a stroll to one of Boston's hidden gems, head around the corner to D Street and find yourself an Adirondack chair in The Lawn on D, one of the neatest, and hiddenest, places in South Boston. That's a great place to go if you've got kids that want to run about while you chomp your meal. There are swings, corn hole, ping-pong tables, and...green, green grass. J Pace's is my go-to caterer for both of the apartment communities I manage. We have been using them for 2 years now, and their service is truly top-notch. Andrea and her team help us figure out what will best suite our residents and they are so easy to work with! We just held an event with them and they individually wrapped 100 bags for grab-and-go lunches for our residents, wrote on each bag what was in each, and when they dropped off the food and drinks they took all necessary measures to wipe down everything before we touched it. When it comes to gourmet Italian groceries and delicacies, I can't name a better place in Boston than J. Pace & Son. Heck, Joe Pace practically invented to genre here. He's been around in the North End since 1966. When I heard about the opening of a location at 225 Northern Ave. in the Seaport district across from the Bank of America Pavilion, I was intrigued. There's not a whole lot going on down there for lunch, and I do business fairly often, so if this was going to anything like the other J. Pace outlet's I've visited (downtown, Saugus, North Eend), the neighborhood would be in luck. Well, let me tell ya, this 8,000 square-foot place sets a new standard for the Seaport, and that's a very, very good thing. They have an incredible selection of prepared food menu items (gourmet pastas and salads, giant hot and cold subs) a bakery, fresh meat & produce (including the world's most amazing-looking Italian sausage, here comes the drool), Italian deli meats, a coffee bar, an olive bar (25 varieties), a gelato bar and basic groceries too. Did I mention the beer & wine? The counter guy said there are more than 200 different varieties of wine and more than 50 beers. (Liver, prepare thyself!) When I visited, I sampled a nibble of fresh mozzarella and aged parmigiano reggianno (thanks Joe!), bought some di parma Prosciutto (the fancy stuff), and a humongous Italian sub with hots (simply awesome.) I know this place has decent reviews and I come from NY and so run down deli's are not unheard of, but this place is shockingly dumpy and the food isn't so great. This half supermarket/half deli was recommended to me by a 5 star hotel around the block and I have no idea WHY. We walked in freezing weather to this place a few blocks away being told that is a cute spot for breakfast. REALLY? We could hardly find the door (one of them is broken or out of use), when we walked in no one could help us (acted like it's the first time they've seen a customer and god forbid we asked for a menu), and upon ordering i couldn't get anything to drink because the hot water machine was broken right after my husband got his tea. The technician was standing amongst all of the food trying to fix it with his tools - is that even normal or sanitary? My husband and I both got the same thing, a very tasteless veggie omelette with cold toast. We had to walk through junk to get to a very unclean seating area (didn't even look like a part of the store) and the chairs were very run down. This looks like a place that a lot of officers stop at. I could hardly wait to leave this place, even if it was freezing outside and I had no coat on. J-Pace or J-Pachy as my buddy thinks it's pronounced (Haha), is quite good. We stop here on Saturday afternoons sometimes to grab sandwiches and I do think they are the best in southie! Service can be a little slow and there is often a line, but the food is great so it's totally worth it. I've tried the Buffalo Chicken, Italian, the 601 Congress, and the Americano, they were all amazing, I'm partial to the buffalo personally, but my buddy swears by the Americano... I've been a regular customer at J Pace since I moved to the Seaport, but will unlikely continue to support this business. Half of the items in the store don't have price tags, forcing you to trust the staff to charge you the right amount or making you ask the staff about every item. After Salvatore's went out of business next door, it seems like J Pace is price gauging people - we are residents, and have spent hundreds of dollars at J Pace every month; however the store manager yelled at me this morning for asking if the coffee combo (a bagel or muffin plus a coffee) could be served with an iced coffee. Joe, the manager flatly told me "no that's only about making more sales. Iced coffees are a dollar more so you need to pay for that. Some people walk in here thinking they can get a cappuccino for that price and it's so ridiculous". I was stunned by how rude he was to me ESPECIALLY since he knows I live above their store and frequently shop there. I calmly replied "no problem, I was just asking a question", and walked away. That is absolutely no way to talk to any customer, especially a regular one. After all of the money I've spent there since I moved to Seaport last November, J Pace will now make a few hundred less in sales per month because the manager thought it was ok to yell at me about $1. If you're looking for something similar, I highly recommend Frank Anthony's in Seaport. The staff are all kind, price are all clearly marked, and the produce is much fresher than at J Pace. read more
