My Greek friend brought me here about a month ago, and I can't stop coming back. Don't let the outside fool you. This is the best food I've had in La Mesa in a while, and everything tastes fresh. Why is that so hard to find these days? Fair warning: if the steak special is sold out, that's probably my fault. I also love the beef dolmas and the lamb souvlaki, and I'm working my way through the rest of the menu. So far, I haven't found anything I don't like. The owners are in there working HARD, but they still greet you with a smile, and if you come more than once, they remember you and what you like. I just retracted my 2 star review to a 1 star, due to an odd message I received from the owner after writing my 2 star review last night. My daughter and I are relatively new to the neighborhood and we had been looking to try local spots and since we live Mediterranean food, we were excited to try this place out. It took longer than usual because everytime we tried to go, they were closed. But we finally were able to make it at an hour that they were open. And when I tell you the lady here is rude AF, I almost thought she didn't want to serve us. I don't know if she's the owner or she just works there, has longer light hair, but her body language gave that she didn't want to serve me or my daughter. She didn't make eye contact or greet us while we were waiting to have our order taken.. she's talking to everyone but the people ready to have their order taken. When she's finally "available", she says "ready?" With a fonky attitude. The lady cooking the food was a lot nicer and she wasn't even obligated to speak to us while cooking orders. They have seating, but no AC, but we didn't mind.. we were hungry and ready to try the food. I was hoping this could be one of our go to spots, but that lady's attitude was unsettling. It was pricey compared to other Greek places I've been to with ac and better service. And the menu was limited as far as WHEN you can order specific items listed. So we ended up just going with gyros, which you can't really go wrong with I guess. But the pita on my daughter's gyro was hard and I'm not sure if it was stale or what.. but it was harder for her to chew or eat hers. read more

This may be the best greek food I've ever had in San Diego! I got the Chicken Souvlaki and lemon potatoes. Great portions, chicken was cooked to perfection, lots of flavors. The lemon potatoes are a must and a perfect shareable dish. They have a few tables available for dine-in, I do wish the shop itself was cooler and/or the water they provided was colder. Hands down the best Greek food I've had in San Diego! Everything here was SO good! I ordered the Chicken Souvlaki and our table shared the lemon potatoes. The lemon potatoes are an absolute must!! After passing by so many times I finally gave in and decided to stop. I was beyond amazed at how clean the kitchen and seating area was. Quite literally spotless. The food was amazing. I have no complaints. We got the chicken souvlaki plate and WOW ! The chicken was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The tzatziki and salad were fresh! Everything about the plate was perfect and able to feed two. The lady who helped us out was so sweet and explained what certain dishes were. This place is CUTE! I've lived in La Mesa for 8 years and have never been here and I'm pretty sad that I haven't been. It's definitely a place you might miss but you'll know you're in the right place by the smell of delicious Greek food and sounds of soul. It's very clean, very open and the two beautiful souls behind the counter are warm and inviting. I'm happy to give them my money. The food....chefs kiss! Tasted like my childhood (diverse neighborhood). I ordered a lentil and an avgolemeno soup (yes in 90 degree weather) and a Greek chicken salad with beef dolmades on the side. The last time I was here was 17 years ago! Parking was easy peasy and a big consideration between coming here or the other Greek restaurant on Hillcrest. I was on a hunt for large salads, something I can really feel full on. J&k really hit the spot. One salad was enough to feed two mediumly hungry adults and have leftovers. The service was friendly and helpful. We came on a sell out Saturday right before closing so our selections were limited, even so their salad was freshly chopped and veggies were crispy. They were apologetic about not having enough croutons but made up for it with extra pita with their spicy feta dip. Their spicy feta dip was salty but not spicy. Top two requirements on my list for any good restaurant is the taste and quality of the food - and this restaurant knocks that out of the park. Casual dining process where you pay at the front and then sit down. They bring you your food and you get your own utensils. The seating area is cozy, better for smaller parties. The staff is friendly and kind and I overheard them say they are under new management/ownership. And, once again, I must add how ABSOLUTELY delicious it is. They are not afraid of seasoning and they know how to use it. The meat is moist, the rice full of flavor, salad crunchy and fresh, and the baklava to die for. I truly hope this little gem sees great success! La Mesa is lucky to have this restaurant. We will be back! read more

I have never once been compelled to write a review for a restaurant. This place has changed that. The food is beyond amazing. I have eaten at over 50 Greek/Mediterranean restaurants and not one comes close to this. The food is fresh, flavorful and the portion size is awesome. The owners of the restaurant are really kind and you can tell they genuinely care about the customer experience and put a ton of effort into making sure the food is delicious and authentic. After eating here it will be very difficult to enjoy any other greek restaurants. I enjoy trying new places but this is definitely going to be somewhere I will frequently visit. read more

Tried this place for takeout tonight. We had gyros sandwiches, spanakopitas, the dip duo (spicy feta and tzatziki dips), and the soup of the day which was a broth based mushroom. Each item was so flavorful with fresh herbs, peppers, feta, etc. The tzatziki is luscious and thick with incredibly rich yogurt...best I've ever had. You can tell that quality ingredients and a lot of love go into the preparation. It's like eating at a Greek grandma's kitchen. The pitas were pillowy soft too. I saw in the window that they are applying for a liquor license, so hopefully they will have some Greek liquors, wine, and beer in the future. We will be back soon! read more

Wow some of the best Mediterranean food I've had in awhile. My husband and I both ordered the gyro plate which comes with gyro meat, rice pilaf, tzatziki, pita, and a small salad. The rice pilaf and gyro were so flavorful and not dry at all! The pita was nice and fluffy and the tzatziki had nice depth. Service was prompt and the two ladies in front were very friendly and seemed to have regulars. There is no AC, but it wasn't too uncomfortable. I would recommend trying their allepo chili oil. I'm a greek salad LOVER, and my expectations were low going into this place (I went to JKs when it was run by the previous owner, and the greek salad was less than mediocre). 10/10 food and service yet again! I had dinner with my family the other night and everything we ate was delicious. We tried their beef dolmas and it was a hit with the table. The food at J-K's is simple but done perfectly. Every bite is bright and flavorful. Trust me, just try their rice pilaf and you'll see what I mean. It's cooked perfectly and seasoned well. There was only one worker, who was handling all the orders, and a long wait was totally understandable, my coworker and i waited for an hour. what upsets me was that when my food was ready, it sat there ready, on top of a long wait. the worker there was trying to get me to understand she was overworked and falling behind, when i told her i felt that was an inappropriate/careless move, when i already understood her stress completely, and that wasn't even the issue i had. i was patient and not upset at all because it's not her fault, the wait, up until my food was just sitting there and then she continued to make me feel awful about how slammed she is and how little i understand. i know she didn't see me , because she's busy, like she kept trying to get me to understand, but it felt so bad to me, being responded to so poorly. I was 10 minutes over my hour long lunch break so i didn't get to eat my food at all which i'm not even most upset about!!! im genuinely shaken up and sad from the hospitality.
