This store is awesome. They have everything from outdoor gear, I bought my daughter a pair of extra tuffs to work on her new property in Volcano Hi. They also have groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, plus to go hot food. Also, I forgot to mention they have fishing gear. read more

Had to stop in for a money order. Grabbed a cup of coffee. I wasn't expecting much, I admit I am a coffee snob, but theirs was really good. Made strong, flavorful Colombian brew, dark in the pot, they didn't skimp on ground beans in the filter!! I saw fried chicken offered, though I didn't have time to try it. Will have to return so I can, next time I'm in the neighborhood. The store & lot were kept clean so I felt confident in purchasing there. The coffee was well worth the price and like I said, very tasty. read more

I ordered the tako this time. Unfortunately, it had a strong fishy smell, and I couldn't finish it after a few bites.

J Hara's fried chicken will forever hold a special place in my heart. IYKYK! Anytime I visit family in the area, I stop by for some chicken. The meat is succulent and juicy down to the bone, and the fry on the chicken is PERFECT The chicken is SEASONED, and the crunch is out of control. Is it as good as Aunty Willie Mae's chicken? No! But it's still really good! If I'm not just buying a box of chicken, I'm ordering a Chicken Plate # 2 (see below). Chicken Plate # 2 * 2 thighs * 1 drum * 2 scoops rice * Side mac salad or kimchee salad This plate will set you back $13.99 plus tax, and it's worth every penny! This is pure nostalgia for me And the staff is super friendly and full of aloha. read more

Junk experience today with guy working the back counter where all the hunting knives are. Asian looking guy with glasses. I was looking for a sharpening steel. Rather than be kind and helpful, he was fake kind and pretty much accused me of not being descriptive enough. It's not like he had 20 models to show. He could have easily, with good service, just showed me what they had. I was certainly motivated to drive to Kurtistown from Hilo to purchase this sharpener. After this experience, I will not spend any money beyond fried chicken at J Hara. I'll go to Tokunaga first. If they don't have, I'll order online. I pau with J Hara. You just lost a loyal years long customer my friend. read more

DRIED AHI POKE. If fish were a drug, this is it. This sh*t changed my life. This is not tuna jerky, these are dried ahi cubes... seems hard to find dried ahi, usually it's aku or swordfish everywhere. But this... read more

I use to shop at jjaras for years. Then I found out they offered military discount (aka first responders discount) like tokunagas do so even more I would shop there since I am a veteran and a first responder. But recently found out that they only give these discounts out for only certain items in the store which is only a few things they sell. Not even for a pack of bubble gum. Lol. I feel like was deceived and lied to by them. That is a disappointment. All these years I thought I was getting 10% discount on the thousands of dollars i spent there over the years but wasn't.. Thats what I get for not looking at my receipts. This most definitely changes how and where I shop. Dont get me wrong...I love their crew especially in the sporting good section. Good guys. Their prices are competitive sometimes cheaper then other places but its just upsetting to be told they offer 10% discounts like Tokunagas do then to find out that was not true. read more

service was out of the question HORRIBLE. came in here tuesday evening to pick up some things and the store was a complete MESS. I feel like they hire younger women just to make their petty coins to keep buisness going. young girls covered in ugly tattoos with stingy and mean attitudes because they don't know math and can't read the correct codes for simple items like a bar of soap. I wouldn't recommend purchasing anything as simple as that from this store unless you are dealing with a grown adult who knows how to count change without asking their managers for help and getting mad when you correct them on their service. read more

We stopped by the J Hara store in Kutistown, Hilo to eat the fried chicken plate, which we were recommended a must place to eat. Our plate consisted of a scoop of rice, Kim chee and 2 pieces of fried chicken thighs. We were not disappointed! Definitely would go back! read more

ONE STOP SHOP! Where else can you buy fresh fried chicken, spam musubi, fishing poles, weights, hooks, cupcake batter...and a gun or bow/arrow!? This place has everything! It's like a cross between a convenience store, grocery store, firearms and fishing supply. We went to buy fishing supplies and ended up walking out with that plus all kinds of random stuff. read more

SELECTION! And lunch too! Fireworks sale for new year's eve was awesome!A new fishing reel and I'm ready for spring.

Love this little local gem! You can find anything here, seriously. In the mood to buy a canopy kit for your car, get some poke, fishing line, dog food, a 40oz of Colt45 and a breast of the best fried chicken on the big island? This place has it all. Great hours, friendly staff. Best fried chicken i've ever had. All kinds of fresh poke, meats and fish. Cold beverages to assuage any thirst preference or size. Great prices on cigarettes and lose tobacco. They carry all kinds of gear (hunting, fishing, outdoor) Great little convenience store, super easy parking lot. Right next to the post office so it's 2 things you can take care of in one shot on your way home from work. seriously their fried chicken is soooooo good! read more

Hey! If you are new to the island and want to get started fishing, I highly, highly recommend going to J Hara store and talking to Avery! He's definitely the man to set you up with EVERYTHING you need to get right out there and start catching fish! I was really surprised at what great prices they had on fishing poles. We got 2 really awesome Ugly Stick 10 footers for $39.99. The cheapest I could find the same pole online was $59.99. Of course, they have really high end shit as well! But, if you're looking for good, affordable gear, don't waste your time at Walmart! For the same price or less, you get quality stuff, AND expert advice from Avery! read more

This store has everyting from guns, to fishing stuff, to groceries. This is literally one stop shopping. I have to say this is the best fried chicken on the island. I put that on everyting. Customer service is great also. I had a mistake on my food order and they made it right. I went there for some bow advise and got great information. I am very happy with this store. read more

I normally go to J. Hara store for food or drinks because it's located in a convenient area. They also have a variety of groceries, which helps when you need something right away! This store is usually busy but the cashiers that helped me are usually nice and say thank you before you leave. But this recent experience wasn't very pleasant. The cashier didn't really say anything and after I paid I was just handed my change and receipt. No "thank you" or anything. I will probably return in the near future for convenience purposes, but wouldn't expect best customer service. They should provide cashiers with customer service training or hopefully next time, I'll be assisted by a more pleasant cashier. ‍ read more

It's so good to have a store in town for all the essentials. My SIL asked us to stop in on the way to her place nearby and grab some tomatoes. Due to the interesting selection the store has to offer, the hubby and I have taken to calling it Tomatoes and Shotguns. This place just makes me smile :) read more

I've finally had enough bad experiences here to write a bad review. The food products are all 99 cent store "brands" but are the same price as name brand stuff at the grocery store. I live right down the street but frequently drive all the way to keaau just to avoid the j hara price gouging. Some of the staff are nice enough, but others are straight up rude, which I'd be willing to excuse if they did their jobs effectively... but they don't. Today I literally stood at the register for 10 minutes while a line formed behind me all the way down the aisle and around to the next aisle because the cashiers could not figure out how to make one of the registers work, and when Doreen the checkout lady finally came back over to my register, she wouldn't even look at me, let alone say "thank you for your patience" or even acknowledge that I was there. I don't really care if store employees keep their heads down and just do their job, they're not getting paid to socialize, but people who have such poor customer service skills that they can't even say hello to a customer who's been standing at a register for 10 minutes with no explanation should probably stay in the stock room. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. The owner had promised a sale price for an item that was out of stock. The owner, Jeff then changed his mind when the item was in stock. We left a deposit and still have the receipt for it. He refused to sell it at the sale price and instead gave us back our deposit. This was not some small item, it was for fishing supplies priced at over $1000. The worse part is he didn't even explain why and instead let his employees tell us that Jeff changed the price. This spin less action even made the situation worse. I have heard similar stories from other people with price switching done by the owner Jeff. Buyer beware, stay away from J. Hara Store-they are deceitful. read more

I've only visited once but this store is cool - they've got everything from camo gear to groceries to office supplies. Hubby wanted to check out the camo gear. He said, "We can't leave Hilo without going J. Hara!" Great stop if you need some groceries or other random items (I.e. Lemon and a loofah, which is what my purchase consisted of!) .... AND the loofah was only $.99! :) I appreciate these cute mom and pop stores that have been around for some time. read more

This store is has been an integral part of the community for several generations.. But I was devastated when they took down the bulletin board. It was an important communication tool for the whole community. I found employment and sold a vehicle using it. I believe they lose customers by removing the board as people would stop to read it and end up buying something. It provided a great community service. PLEASE PUT THE BULLETIN BOARD BACK!!!! read more
