I thought for sure I'd snicker at this mall's tenant list and interior, but, I was pleasantly surprised after a recent visit! Insert foot in mouth I did... I'm pretty sure my positive response is in part due to the fact that the Prince Kuhio is managed by General Growth Properties, the same owner and management company as Hawaii's infamous and lucrative Ala Moana Center on Oahu. To me, a GGP-managed mall looks great and has a strong tenant list. They've even brought over the Big Island's first Zippy's restaurant. Comparing the Prince Kuhio to my hometown mall, Queen Kaahumanu Center on Maui, I think the Prince Kuhio has an advantage for several reasons. First off, PK has all the stores Maui has, only they're all in one area and not spread all over town. Secondly, there are some stores still in business here that closed long ago on my rock. Thirdly, the mall is enclosed, so shopping is always comfortable. Also, parking is plentiful and highway access is easy. The only weak point would be their food court which consisted of about just 3 eateries. Their Sports Authority spot was still empty and the PacSun store was closing up shop, but the vacancies were less than on Maui. It's not new, modern, or big, but it serves its purpose well. If I lived in Hilo, I'd be the Duke of this place lol! HIGHLIGHTS: Macy's DQ Hawaiian Island Creations IHOP KFC Longs Old Navy Pier 1 Multi-plex theaters Sears Zippy's

During my trip to Hilo, I was searching for any sort of mall establishment and I finally found one! My friend told me this was pretty much the only "mall" they had, so I wanted to see what it was like compared to Ala Moana since I live on Oahu. I wasn't expecting it to be grand or anything, but it had some pretty good tenants and stores while I was strolling through. Amongst them, I saw familiar stores such as American Eagle, Jeans Warehouse, and Zumiez. They also had the major department stores like Macy's and Sears...along with a movie theater. I actually got a chance to eat at Sunlight Express. We checked out the food court, but none of the food selections were to our liking. I remember getting a plate lunch combo with garlic shrimp and steak, yes steak again. I think all I ate was steak in Hilo (refer to past reviews). Anyways, it wasn't L&L quality, but it was good, I'll have to say. The environment was a lot nicer than I thought it would be too.

It's been years since I last went to Hilo, I wanna say it's been like 5 years or so since I last…read morevisited Hilo town. Whenever I'm in Hilo, I would come to this little strip mall called - "Hilo Shopping Center", just for two reasons - 1. Lanky's Pastries..........this is my all time favorite local bakery in Hilo. As I always would come here for their Cream Buns, Glazed Donuts, & Monkey Bread. 2. First Hawaiian Bank (Hilo Branch), as this is my customer...........it's just like I get paid to visit my friends, and while I'm at the bank, it just so happen for me that I have to fix something for them (while I'm visiting). :D Aside from these two businesses, I've seen a lot of business come & go from this little strip mall. On my recent visit this past Friday, I was pretty shocked at how empty the mall looked like when I took a quick stroll inside of the mall. Established back in 1961, the Hilo Shopping Center was the 1st shopping center on the Big Island, and from looking at the strip mall directory, they currently have the following businesses listed here - 1. First Hawaiian Bank (Hilo Branch) 2. Lanky's Pastries - I went here on Friday (12-4-2020), and they were closed. I hope they didn't close down permanently??? 3. Island Naturals Market & Deli 4. Kamana Kitchen 5. LV Tech 6. Optical Dispensers 7. CVS Longs Pharmacy 8. ACR Dollar 9. Restaurant Miwa 10. Sole Comfort 11. The Orient Connection 12. Diva's Boutique 13. Liberty Tax 14. Jin Ju Hair Salon 29. Institute of Acupuncture 30. Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant I'm not sure if all these businesses are still in business, as the mall sure looked pretty empty. Of course we are in the middle of a pandemic, so I'm not sure if a few businesses had to closed down for now, until safer times. I am hoping my beloved Lankys Pastries will reopen one day.........I kid you not gang, I actually stopped by Lankys (2) times on Friday!!! I first came by Lankys Pastries around 6:45 AM, but when I saw it was closed, I was thinking maybe I had come here too early in the morning, and that they had not opened up yet. Then later that afternoon, around 1:00 PM I swing by Lankys again after leaving K's Drive In, thinking I'd stop by for my Cream Bun fix. This time after parking & getting out of my rental car & walking up to the bakery...........the bakery was closed, but the bakery items/shelves were still in there. Please pray with my that Lankys is just closed for a short time, and not permanently........Aiyah! (Sad Panda Face!)..............

I mainly go here for Island Naturals Mkt & deli. I do like to browse the other shops, especially…read morethe baked goods, snow cones. There are numerous food establishments for your Indian, Chinese or Japanese cravings. Enjoy the stop and grab a bite!

What brought me here to the Kea'au Shopping Center???…read more Oh yeah, I came here just for one store...........Foodland!!! While working in Hilo yesterday, when it was lunch time I decided to visit an old skool drive-in called "K's Drive In", and if you thought that little shrimp burger I ate for lunch was enough sustenance for Bruddah Fran, then you thought wrong!!! Lol! And that's why later in the afternoon I had to drive all the way to Kea'au town to stop by this little shopping complex called - "Kea'au Shopping Center", just to visit the Foodland store. Built in the 80's (1982 to be exact, as you can see it in the sign), this little shopping complex mainly serves the Puna district, and the surrounding areas. Some of the businesses I saw at the Kea'au shopping complex - 1. Foodland 2. Kea'au Natural Foods 3. Ace Hardware Store 4. Suds & Duds Laundromat 5. Lemongrass Vietnamese & Thai Food 6. Supercuts 7. Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf 8. La Uma Samoa 9. Sandorra Floral Designs 10. Subway Sandwiches And right across the street from the "Kea'au Shopping Center", I saw the follow businesses - 1. McDonalds (but of course.......they're everywhere!) 2. Shell Gas Station & Convenience store 3. Longs Drugs 4. HFS Credit Union As small as the Kea'au Shopping Center is, I found the shopping complex to be bustling with folks, and am very happy to see some of the locally owned businesses doing well. Got to Foodland, and got my afternoon "snack"...........you will see what I picked up in my following review! :D If you're in da boonies..........good thing that the Kea'au Shopping Center is here to serve the folks in the Puna district.
