Incredible service. Because they closed their shops for a little bit when we got there, the guy let us borrow the bike for half a day extra. And we didn't make it in time to return the bikes before it closed and they were so gracious and don't charge us a late fee. They give really great recommendations. We biked volcanoes so it was less rainy and it really didn't rain on us! One of the most human and kind shop I've ever encountered. Would highly highly recommend. No bikes to rent today....or any other day if you are not part of a large tour group. We walked in to rent and had an awkward conversation. Once I told him we were with the cruises ship the answer went from maybe to NO. Seems like the tour wardens have this market locked up for stray cruisers. Had a great one day rental with 2 simple hard tails. $35 each bike, and the drivetrain was smooth and quiet. They included a 2 bike carrier and repair tools for no extra cost. Kulani Forest reserve was a bust cause of the deep puddles, but we rode at Wailoa park by the coast and a botanical garden facility near our hotel. read more

I was in Hilo for a couple of days to visit relatives and was looking to keep active during my stay. I was a bit skeptical of this place due to the one bad review on Yelp. My experience was completely hassle free and the guy that helped me (Frank, I believe was his name) was extremely informative and helpful. If $25 dollars for a 24 hour rental (which included helmet and lock) is considered $$$$ expensive, I don't know what to tell you (don't vacation in Hawaii?). Friendly service, reasonable price, fast and easy...what more could you ask for. I feel like I should mention: if you're a complete newbie to biking around Hilo and don't know the area, do some research before just hitting the road! Some areas have extremely narrow bike lanes or none at all. That being said, there are some gorgeous rides to be made in/around the area. Always received great prompt and friendly helpful service. This is a rather late review since I only recently decided to participate in online review sharing. Purchased a new moped (around $2000.00 give or take) from them some years ago which ran fine until it got stolen later (and thankfully "unbelievably") then recovered with a busted ignition that Mid Pac repaired at a semi reasonable fee in a modest time period pending shop next door's available time and worker schedule. They did a very good job in requiring my proof of ownership before accepting the repair work. I had unfortunately misplaced the ownership title and original receipt over the years (which layer realized upon further recollection were in my car glove compartment that got broken into and got stolen too YES EVEN MY CAR GOT STOLEN TOO and had been a personal victim of a lot of crime in Hawaii over the years which is far worse TODAY) and they were happy to research it in their records since I purchased it brand new from them and even arranged to get a replacement title and new tags for it. In the end, I got new keys and ignition and decided I just didn't want to worry about how easy any thief could steal it again even though it's locked and chained like last time they probably just cut the lock and tossed the bike into the back of a pickup truck in broad daylight within only one or two minutes time. Too easy for bikes to get stolen so I asked if they could sell it for me they said sure ok. At least I got around close to half back of what I paid which is a lot better than half of zero the next time it got stolen. The next owner was probably thrilled to get an excellent condition moped with new tags and with very low mileage since I hardly used it and was stored sitting in the indoor home garage most of the time. I later (just recently) had 3 bikes (bicycles) stolen along with most of my fishing stuff including a brand new never once used yet rod and reel and tools from my outside garage (right there attached as an extension of the main home) which were never recovered and I'm not holding my breath on those. I no longer feel safe owing any bike or moped now (and also certain makes and models of cars that are easy to steal). Anyone can easily steal them at any time and anywhere in broad daylight within only a minute or two even when chained up. Would be pointless to own if used as transportation unless it can always be locked up indoors at all parked destinations with someone always watching. When parked outside with lock and chain they're as good as gone already. Minus one star for initial price of moped which was a bit higher than normal at the time but I guess since it's Hilo (like the markup above retail prices when buying a brand new car from any Hilo car dealership). I would definitely go back to give Mid Pacific Wheels my business again and pay the higher prices based on their A+ customer service. read more

This review is specifically for the SAG support vehicle services provided by Mid Pacific Wheels to reach the summit of Mauna Kea by bike. Although Mauna Kea is a popular bucket-list item for extreme hill-climbers globally, private vehicle support for a single cyclist is surprisingly difficult to retain on the Big Island. After corresponding with several prospective entities, both commercial and non-commercial, I chose Mid Pacific Wheels because they were literally the only ones who (1) Would respond to my inquiries in a timely manner and (2) Were not already booked during the dates that I wanted to attempt Mauna Kea. Gerry, the owner of Mid Pacific Wheels, was my support driver and I found him to be knowledgeable, supportive, and accommodating to my requirements. Gerry has intimate knowledge of Mauna Kea because he has successfully guided other parties to the top in the past. He knows where it's easy, where it's tough, and good places to stop. Importantly, he knows REAL information about this ride because he himself as accomplished it (his information is not secondhand or anecdotal). My SAG support included a variety of foods, drinks, and cycling tools and replacement parts. Long before the day of the ride, Gerry asked me for detailed specs on the bikes I was bringing so he could replace anything that broke. He also asked for my food preferences and we planned in detail how the support would occur over the duration of the ride. Gerry was 100% receptive to my cycling objectives, gave actionable answers to my questions, and provided detailed insights that were critical to the success of my ride. Gerry even took pictures of me throughout the ascent and at the summit. Located in Hilo (1133 Manono St #C, Hilo, HI 96720) for 40 years, the storefront of Mid Pacific Wheels is now largely and capably operated by Gerry's son, Frank. Both father and son have been staunch supporters of cycling on the Big Island and continue to advocate for open-access to Mauna Kea for cyclists. If you want to support a local bike shop that has been there since the beginning, I humbly suggest Mid Pacific Wheels. Overall, I could not have summited Mauna Kea without a support vehicle and I credit Gerry with my success as much as my legs. To any Mauna Kea first-timers, I advise having a support vehicle because it can turn dangerous without one. The Trek mountain bike was in great shape and shifted smooth.. put about 60 miles on over the course of 2 days. Worst bike rental experience. The day I went to rent the bike, these guys were super friendly but the bike I tried had a problem in shifting. The guy said he will fix it and keep it ready for me. I explicitly told him that i came from California to do the Mauna Kea climb so I need a good bike and he told me that the bike is good. I tried the bike in front of the shop and it seemed fine as it is pretty flat. But when I took it for the climb, within first mile the gear shifting started showing problems. The chain kept slipping every few peddles. I couldn't get of the saddle. Almost fell down few times due to chain getting stuck while changing the gears. Higher gears were not usable at all and had to ride on lower gear. Somehow I managed to get to access road but in the steep climb the chain slipping made it nearly impossible to climb 20% grade. I somehow managed to get to visitor center and had to abort my ride. For this 4-5 hour ride from hilo to visitor center, it took me over 7 hours due to the bike problems. For the first time ever, i had to call up for help to pick me up as going back was totally not possible with that bike. When i went back and told the the guy in the shop [the same guy who gave me the bike]. First he did not even respond, he kept silent and continued putting the bike back in the shop. he pretended as if nothing happened. When I said the same thing again, he wouldn't even look into my eyes. he knew the bike had problems but still gave me that bike. My recommendation to anybody visiting Hilo. Rent a bike from Kona. Much better selection and excellent bikes. Don't rely on Hilo for bikes. And you are better off without a bike than renting from Mid pacific wheels. read more

I had EXCEPTIONAL service and a great bike for my rental period. I reserved it on Sunday and I picked it up on Monday. They provided me with patch kits, a lock and a helmet as well as recommended routes to take for my intended rides (to Akaka Falls, etc). My work had me traveling off island each evening. One day when I was not sure I would be returning again to Hilo *at all* due to a work schedule change, the folks at Mid-Pac Wheels even offered to get the bike where I had left it. I did get back to Hilo, but then could only return it several hours late. Unlike the other reviewer's experience, they did NOT charge me an extra day. They simply could not have been more friendly and easy to rent from. There is a $300 deposit, but that is entirely reasonable considering someone may just take or destroy an expensive piece of nice rental equipment. They are quality bikes. If you don't hurt the equipment, you get it all back so it's not a big deal. I got my full deposit back. I will go there again and I recommend Mid-Pacific Wheels if you need bike equipment while you're in Hilo. read more

This is one of those companies that is full of excuses. We reserved 2 bikes from them for $25/day. Seems reasonable. But what they didn't tell us is that they were going to put a hold on our bank account for $100's of dollars! When the bikes were picked up they mentioned the hold but also said the hold comes off as soon as we return the bikes. Well it was 4 days later and the bank still had our money. So the "owner" says, "We don't have anything to do with the bank" "It's up to them when they take the hold off" "You'll have to call the bank and find out when they will take the hold off" What a joke. I notice how they treated other customers and I swear I don't know how they've been in Hilo for so long. They must prey off the college kids coming in that don't know any better. Next time I'm taking my business to Hilo Bike Hub. So if you don't mind having your money tied up for days for a $25 bike rental, then go for it. The bikes are old but they work. P.S. Small bike shop in Hilo that rents road bikes. Thats why I went there. Seems that employees split their time there with the scooter shop next door. Rental bike was a fairly heavy Giant Defy with a triple chain set. Price was a bit high for the bike quality, but I think this may be the only rental option for a road bike in town. Staff was pleasant, if a bit distracted. My sense if that these guys are doing the best they can in a challenging location. I was glad they were there. read more

great shop. great people. very friendly. unusually nice. was in hilo for a week of cycling and developed a skip in my chain, necessitating a hard to find campy chain. they had it, installed it as i waited. was able to return to my ride quickly enough so that i could finish the whole ride and not make those back at home nervous. quick service. great people. great diversity of parts in stock. an A+ winner. read more

oh god where do I start. well first I purchased a moped and things are fine. moped works great but then im told that my first tune up will be free, 3 times with a smile. so when I do come in for my tune up im told its not free. second time I encountered a problem with them was when they sold me a overpriced item and I could not return as for they have a no return policy. third and I swear the last time I do business with them went as follows. I was sold a keli variator for a Honda dio. I was told it would fit, twice with a smile to my face and it did but barley it rattled in my trans case. this item cost me 53 dollars and now I have to sell it because they don't refund. man this place is a rip off. never do business unless you know what your doing. other then that stay away from the moped side at all cost unless you like giving away your money. cold ppl work their, period read more
