I can really only review one item on the menu because it's the thing I go to J. Gumbo's specifically for: the Crawfish Po Boy. YUM! Thus far, is the best in Chattanooga. There's another place newly opened at Hamilton Place that makes one, but doesn't offer remoulade. Why the hell are they even offering it on the menu? When the proprietor serves the sandwich, it's open-face both so you can see how much there is and because if he tried to serve it closed, he'd have to serve it with vice clamps to keep it together, there's THAT MUCH CRAWFISH and fixings on it. Delicious. I'm sure they make other things and I'm sure they're good, but I'm afraid I'll never find out because I just can't pass up the Crawfish Po Boy. What a great place to eat!!! The owners were exceptionally nice and the food was full of flavor. I have tried the drunken chicken, voodoo chicken and the bourbon street chicken. I would get them all again. I also tried their bread pudding and it def tastes better than it looked. I am looking forward to trying some of their other dishes. Holy smokes! These best Cajun food I have ever had! Was super skeptical, it's in HIXSON and in a run down building, so visually not the most eye pleasing. However, the reviews were really good so I decided to take the leap of faith, the wife and I were super glad we did. She ordered the shrimp etoufee, think that's spelled correctly, great flavor, great consistency. I ordered the jean lafitte, geez, my mouth watered the whole meal, it had an incredible punch in the mouth with every bite. We will definitely make this a regular stop when we order take out. Rice, voodoo chicken and other ingredients mixed together in a gumbo-like soup. They have traditional Cajun food like Red Beans and Rice, Crawfish Etoufee, Shrimp Etoufee as well as several types of PoBoy's. I had high hopes based upon the 4.5 rating it received, but was sadly, disappointed. We had an order of shrimp étouffée, two orders of chicken sausage gumbo, and order of bourbon chicken, and the crawfish cheese dip. The shrimp in the étouffée was flavorless. It was as if they made the sauce and put in the shrimp at the last minute. The gumbos were just as flavorless, even one that had asked for more spice added. Apparently the bourbon chicken was good enough. The crawfish cheese dip was tasteless, and the chips were not good. I hate to give such a low review, but the food tasted like they had no idea what Cajun food should taste like, much less how to prepare it. All in all, I would not return. read more

My husband and I are still loving J Gumbo's. The staff has maintained their friendliness, and the restaurant is always amazingly clean. The variety of heat levels available in the menu should fit any pallet, and new additions like honey sriracha chicken are excellent. (Mix bumble bee stew and the honey sriracha chicken for a real treat!) If you need dinner to go or a catered meal, this crew will take great care if you. it's not often you find a Cajun style restaurant in a small town, so J Gumbos is a pretty good place to stop if you're in the mood for creole cooking. I only gave it 3 stars because the food is decent, but not great. I didn't even think the price was in line for the amount or quality of food. I'd expect Cajun food to be on the spicy or zesty side of the food spectrum, but our meals were just ho-hum. Again, not bad... just nothing exciting. The atmosphere of the restaurant is the usual, cliche New Orleans theme and a little on the dark side, regarding lights. My wife and I were in the area today around lunch time and decided to give this place a try. It was really good! I had the jambalaya and it was pretty good, but my wife had the bourbon chicken and it was "Sooooo good!" The service was great too! We were even given samples of the gumbo and red beans and rice, and they were good too. Will definitely come back and try some of the others items on the menu, even though we live 30 minutes away. Went here on the advice of some great Elite Yelpers. The family that owns the place is super friendly and very welcoming. I had a great long chat with them, as the place wasn't busy at 2:00 in the afternoon. They are Indian and have lived here in the Chattanooga area for 11 years. I asked why Cajun and the owner said that Cajun/Creole flavors are very similar to Indian spices and flavors and they just loved the concept. You can taste anything on the menu board. I had a sample taste of the gumbo, the honey sirracha chicken, the drunken chicken, red beans and rice, etc. The gumbo has a very rich, dark roux that is very flavorful. It is a fantastic base for the gumbo. The opposite side of that is the etouffee base. Golden colored and light roux with similar, yet different flavors from the gumbo. They compliment each other nicely. I ordered a sample plate and a shrimp Po' Boy to go. I really enjoyed the Po'Boy. The remoulade was very good, with a smooth, slightly sweet tang to it. They put a ton of shrimp on the sandwich too. I really enjoyed the red beans and rice, very rich bold flavors. The honey sirricha chicken was recommended by the owner's young niece, who said it was her favorite. It's good. Sweet and spicy, my favorite flavor combination. I'll go back just to hang out with the family. They were so warm and sweet. I even got a henna tattoo from one of the daughters. I had such a fun experience. read more

Found this restaurant by accident. We were running some errands and went the wrong way. Once we finished our errands we decided to go back and try it out. The staff was beyond helpful and allowed you to sample multiple things. I had the crawfish ettouffe and it was lovely. My husband has the Gumbo. He usually only likes it with andouille sausage but he was willing to try it without. Totally enjoyed it. Very tasty and the toasted bread was yummy. Bottom line up front: The food is great, but this is one of a few rare places that it's actually the service that keeps me coming back. I was recently stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood MO, where I would travel to St. Louis when the occasion permitted. While not New Orleans, there is an unmistakable and authentic Creole presence, especially in the French quarter called Soulard. It was here I fell in love with cajun food, and was excited to find this small diner opened in my absence. While they are not a full service restaurant, complete with fresh boiled crawfish and such, the food is outstanding, fair priced, fast, and most importantly, made with care. The couple that owns this establishment really care about their customers and will go the extra mile to make you happy. The food is 4 star, but the service easily adds another. Being from Louisiana I have certain expectations when a place claims to be Cajun and offers Cajun food. However I also have certain understandings when a place is a quick service chain restaurant. The staff was friendly. And the service was quick. I would suggest they verbalize that they can give samples since they are new and it's a new kind of food for this area. That being said the food is good. For me Cajun food is treating the spices and the food, not just the spices. I sampled a couple of their dishes to say that the spicier ones was pretty much overpowered with spice. This could also be due to the samples not having the rice with it to cut the spices. I opted for the Bourbon St chicken. It was sweet and mild. It also allowed the other flavors to come through. Now the bowls are huge. (Next time I would ask for the child size.) However it wad mostly rice, which isn't necessarily a problem but there wasn't enough liquid from the sauce to really enjoy the entire bowl. My hubby got the red beans. He only had one slice of sausage in it. (But that could've been from the luck of the scoop) I didn't care for it as it had a vinegar - y taste to it. Not what I'm used to from back home. I would sat $7/$8 for the adult bowl is a bit overpriced considering how much filler (rice) there is. But if I got the child's bowl it would be more worth it to me. I will go back again. But it may be awhile to let them work out some of their kinks. read more

I love this place! I'm not sure what took me so long to review this restaurant, but I am compelled by the deliciousness that is J. Gumbo's. Okay, so it is partly the food that brings me back time and again, but it's also the family that runs the joint. So, the food is amazing. They keep it really simple. This is no gourmet fancy pants cajun spot. They have gumbo, jambalaya, bumblebee stew, bourbon street chicken.... the list goes on. All the favorites from Loosie-ana are here. I was not familiar with all of them before eating here, but I am now. Everything I have had is great. I like a little heat in my food and J. Gumbo's delivers (on the heat-pretty sure they don't do delivery)! I have spoken with the owners and they said that they wanted to bring a restaurant and a taste to Hixson that wasn't here. Something fresh and new. Nailed it. Yes, there is Blue Orleans downtown, but this is the kind of place that you can do spur of the moment. It has a casual atmosphere and is the kind of place that they get to know you. The owners will actually come out and check on you while you are eating and make sure you have everything you need. If it is not what you expected or something is wrong, they will make it right. They have for me before. You can tell that they sincerely want their guests to be satisfied. I actually overheard her saying to another table this afternoon, "I'm so proud of you for trying that dish on your first visit." She loves for people to try her food-and beams when people are enjoying it. So like I said, I go back for the food, and the service. There is New Orleans style music playing inside while you eat. The prices are really decent for what you get. The servings are large. So large, I sometimes can't finish. Kind of push myself to finish because it's so flavorful. So anytime the Mrs. mentions J. Gumbo's, I am on board. Would totally recommend this to any of my friends or colleagues, and will continue to do so. I have been there several times, and they are consistently on point. The restaurant is clean every visit. Also, I have noticed the clientele is very diverse. People from all walks of life coming to eat here. They defiantly go something good going on. Atmosphere was awesome. Service and hospitality were beyond amazing. I've seen a few reviews that are a bit confusing. Here's what you need to know 1) parking isn't an issue and not confusing at all. 2) rap music? No. They have New Orleans style music playing 3) rude?? Not sure where you ate, but the whole staff was very friendly and polite. 4) gumbo DOES NOT have shrimp!! It's even in the description of the dish. If you are confused with what's on the wall, they have a take out menu that better explains what's in the dish 5) the voodoo chicken will set your mouth on fire, but it's good! The food taste is excellent. Really neat they give out samples to taste the different entrée. I would strongly recommend this to see if you can handle the spicy taste of each dish. Not all dishes are spicy and they have several vegetarian options. It would be nice if the staff offered suggestion or explanation about each of the dishes. I wish they would ask you, being a new place it would be a nice touch. I got the red beans and rice, which had a lot of rice, it was tasty. One big complaint was only one slice of sausage. Typically in a restaurant that serves red beans and rice you get a small sausage link, but this was in no way a link, but a thin slice of sausage. I would expected a few more pieces, 3 or 4 would have been great, but 1 is just not enough at that price. Also the bowl was filed with alot of rice, a creamy (from their description) red beans and rice would of had more of a sauce. This would of made eating a half bowl of white rice more enjoy, which I just through away because I wasn't in the mood for a bowl of white rice. My wife got the bourbon street chicken which was tasty and had enough shredded chicken to eat throughout the entire meal, but again very little sauce and she throughout a half bowl of white rice. Also no where on the menu it told you about the kids bowl or that it was even a option or how much. The one i saw on someone else table, seemed like That would be enough food for a meal. They are a new place and I will go back, because the food was really good, the staff friendly, and alot of potential. The voodoo chicken is delicious. It's my favorite dish here. Nice and spicy with a good thick sauce. Been here a few times and always happy with the food. The owner is friendly and helpful with suggestions and even samples if you've never been there before. We usually don't wait long for carryout orders even if we place it at the counter. Portions are large and everything runs around $8-12. There are even a few alcoholic selections for adults. The parking lot out front is pretty small, but otherwise no complaints. read more

Tried this new place last night and was very pleased. Having traveled all over I get frustrated that in this area the only options are chicken, burgers, pizza, or BBQ. So nice to finally have something different. The food: Very good. My husband had the gumbo and I had a half etoufee/half jambalaya and we shared. Both were good with the gumbo being more mild and the jam/etoufee more spicy. Yes you can get samples, it says so in big letters at the top of the menu on the wall. But for those who miss it they are letting people know that you can get a sample. The staff: Everyone was very nice and courteous. The staff is made up of the owners, their family and additional staff (like Ankars). The owners are very involved, coming out to greet customers and treat their staff really well. I watched the owner correct one of the non-family staff and was pleasantly surprised at how calmly and positively she talked with the employee. Atmosphere: This is a chain so they do not control the color scheme which was fine and what would be expected. There was no music playing at all when we arrived but when the owner came out to greet us my husband suggested they have zydeco music. Within 2 minutes it was playing. Parking: True, parking is limited. So is parking in downtown Chattanooga. I have been to many places in this country where you had to park nearby and then walk...and then stand in line for 45 minutes just to order. People need to get over their "instant gratification/don't inconvenience me" attitude and realize some things are worth it. Minute Rice (loose, water logged, not nice rice cooker type rice) Crawfish - 6 small raggedy crawfish, could have fit on heaping tablespoon Sauce - just a spicy roux.... (probably came from can or powder). Smooth like gravy--no pieces of celery, onion, green pepper. Lived in Louisiana for 5 years, this is not cajun cooking. This isn't really even cooking. I don't expect Minute Rice when ordering from a restaurant. A Swanson tv dinner version would have been better. read more
