A lot of words are not needed here. Hands down this is our new favorite place to go for a fabulous meal and fabulous service and ambience. We went about a month ago with another couple and we have reservations again for this saturday and we will also be going back in april for my husbands birthday. Apologies to Citizen Kanes because J Gilberts has become our new favorite place. One small complaint I could give is that there was'nt a lot of lobster in the lobster mac. They should put just a little bit more, PLEEEEEZE. ;o) Other than that everything was excellent!!!! See ya soon. read more

We started our experience with the espresso martini, as you drink this martini topped with cream, a wonderfully balanced combination of sweet froth to espresso ratio is created as you sip through the martini. We also enjoyed wonderful whiskey cocktails garnished with candied bacon and luxardo cherries with a touch of sea salt to really elevate the flavor. For our first course I had the lobster bisque, upon bringing to the table our attentive and knowledgeable server poured the bisque over a bowl of freshly steamed lobster, the flavor was robust and creamy. Perfectly paired with their house salad, the appetizers didn't serve justice for the main course. It is hard to cook scallops right but J Gilbert's turned my scallops into pillowy smooth bursts of flavor. He got the porter house, nothing less than delicious, the wood fire facilitated a depth of flavor for the beef. We went on 1/8/21, the first Friday of reopening. Elevated dining experience, dynamic and beautiful atmosphere, and perfectly executed menu. Perfect restaurant for a celebration, date night or meal with friends. read more

Our first visit will most certainly not be our last! We were here for a retirement party and the bar area of the restaurant was marked off for us. The staff was phenomenal! Very attentive and ready to fill your drink order the moment you drank the last sip. The food was amazing. I am not a burger person but the sliders they had out were presented well, looked great and boy was it good! The atmosphere is great for lunch, dinner or just drinks with your girlfriends. read more

Fantastic meal! The steak melted in your mouth! The crab cakes are the best I have ever had. Soooo much crab meat! Definitely pricey so more for a special occasion kind of night. read more

awesome food! great service! I recommend the three course dinner. the filet was amazing and the sides were delicious.

We had a lovely meal. It was very busy so we sat at the bar but it was very comfortable and the food was excellent. We had great service too. It would be great for a happy hour with coworkers or a date. It was my first visit there but I'll definitely be back. read more

The food was amazing! I wish I could give 6 stars! We went for Valentine's Day and had 4:00 reservations. Our first dish was our salads. Hubby had a caesar salad, I had a house salad. The house salad was delicious! I was a bit surprised that it was spinach instead of romaine, but it was a pleasant surprise. The house dressing was really tasty and gave the salad a great flavor. Hubby's caesar salad was DEVINE! It was so good that I added some to my plate! I will be sure to get it next time we go. My main course was the lump crab cakes with au gratin potatoes and everything was delicious! Hubby had surf n turf and it was delicious as well. The filet mignon melts in your mouth (yep, tasted that too). My goodness, the lobster mac & cheese was so good and so flavorful!!! Hubby was looking forward to it and it definitely did not disappoint!! We also ordered a side order of king crab and they were already pre-cracked, which was great because we both hate to crack then open. The waiter was amazing! Very attentive, very knowledgeable, very friendly. The manager was very nice as well. He cane by to check on us a few times and he was very nice and very concerned on if our service was up to par. Thank you for your hospitality and the wonderful food, we will definitely be back! read more

We went there for my birthday & I was anxious to order crab cakes since I loved them every other time I had been there. Unfortunately it appears the recipe was changed since they weren't as flavorful. They were dry and almost half the size from a prior visit. What a bummer. The salmon was good and the chocolate cake was delish. Just disappointed. read more

Good food, great service, really nice atmosphere, if your wallet can afford it, this is a nice dining experience.

I was taking my mother out for her 60th birthday and let me just say, this place was absolutely amazing. The ambiance, the host, and even our waiter CJ did a awesome job serving us. He told us exactly what we needed to know as far as drinks, food, and dessert. He recommended the Sea Bass and my parents loved it. He really made our first time really enjoyable. So, if you live in the Des Peres, MO location, go to J Gilberts and ask for CJ. read more

I rarely dine at a shopping mall. That being said, I was very happy with my choice. The food was above average, but the service was outstanding. Our waiter Sam was a perfect host. He helped us make some good decisions and elevated the restaurant to a rare 5 star rating. read more

Ate here two nights in a row. Ordered shrimp cocktail as an app, pork chop for dinner, OUTSTANDING. Sat at the bar, great service. I will be literally changing the hotel I usually stay at so I can have dinner here when in town. read more

Came here for my birthday dinner in January and if it wasn't for my friends, the experience would've really messed up my celebration. Our waitress was weird from the beginning of the experience. She questioned if my friend knew what a rosè wine was. He's a wine lover, so of course he knew, but she kept pressing the issue. Then when entries came out, he ordered the lobster tail. She proceeds to take the shell from him with meat still in it! Then she cracked it open with her bare hands and stated, "Oh, did you want the rest of this?" He of course said no. Its a pandemic! Why touch food with your bare hands. Then unknown to me, my friends bought me a beautiful cake and asked her to put the candles on and bring it out as a surprise. They arranged this before I got there. She proceeds to bring the cake out with no candles on it and ask my friend to put it on the cake. The food was great, but the experience was horrible. I know a bad waitress doesn't mean the entire restaurant is bad, but even when we brought this up to management, they didn't do much of anything but thanked us for our feedback. Just no. Never again! read more

My wife and I will make a reservation here when we want to have a nicer steak house dining experience. The staff are always great and the food has never disappointed. Steaks cooked always as ordered with a unique tasty smokiness. Seafood is also on point. Great atmosphere. Not too casual but not formal either. read more

High Points ... The service was excellent and the environment was well-suited for a business meeting. Low Points ... The food. The lobster salad costs $28 and didn't have anywhere near fresh lobster ... it was tasteless. Seriously? Not just that, but it was maybe a couple of claws, not a hint of lobster tail. The lobster meat looked canned and they were stretching the can over our 2 salads. The tomatoes were tasteless ... and it's tomato season! The dressing served with the salad was ranch, although I asked for something a little lighter that wouldn't overshadow the lobster. Didn't have an option. The cooked greens served with the petite filet looked like they also came out of a can. The person who ordered them as their side didn't even touch them. His side salad looked good though. I selected J. Gilberts based upon Yelp reviews and was trying to impress my out-of-town colleagues with an excellent St. Louis restaurant. Not. They promote their seafood is flown in fresh daily, but I beg to differ ... unless they wait several days to serve it. In any event, sadly disappointed in their food. Other aspects of the experience were in line with expectations, particularly the table service, but a high-end restaurant with high-end prices needs to serve food that delights, not disappoints. read more

The steaks are GREAT. the martini's are good too! Sometimes we eat at the bar...the sliders are delicious!

Like comfort food, the experience of J Gilbert's is like a balm to a weary soul. It is our favorite restaurant and go-to location for celebrations as well as resting from a bruising week. It is more than a restaurant with world-class food and service. It is also a sanctuary of peace and reflection. The staff are to be congratulated for creating this rare combination. read more

Wow. I am used to and love real Mexican tacos but I think theirs are the best I've ever had! Everything I've tried is perfect. Amazing.

Our waitress was, in good part, the reason for the high rating. She was the best, attentive, friendly, and helpful! The food was very good, with generous portions. We split the mixed greens salad, and for entrees got the seafood mixed grill and the filet combo with grilled shrimp. Brussels sprouts were recommended by the waitress. Good crusty bread came out first and the salad shortly after. Both were good and the split salad was a good size for two. Our entrees arrived quickly - I was still eating salad. My smaller portion steak was plenty to fill me up and was a perfect medium rare. My friend's seafood grill was too much for her to eat! She proclaimed it delicious. The Brussels sprouts were very tasty, too. The environment is elegant but comfortable. The noise level is not bad at all. read more

If there were more stars I would happily give them. This could be a very long review so buckle up. First of all, the service was wonderful. Very well trained. For the food, we started with a half a dozen fresh oysters & they were gone so fast they aren't even worth talking about other than to say VERY fresh & satisfying. We also had bacon wrapped scallops that were drizzled with a very light & semi sweet balsalmic glaze. I usually do not care for balsamic, but these were just wonderful. Absolutely delicious. The charcuterie platter was a big hit for the whole table, we all enjoyed every bit of that. My husband ordered the 18oz bone in ribeye, medium, and it was perfect. I had a 4 course with a crab cake & filet. The filet was ok, but the crab cake was the star of the show. Best one I have EVER had. We also had a lobster tail that was phenomenal. Perfectly cooked. The final entree we ordered was the 4 point rack of lamb & oh! My! God!! Was it DELICIOUS! Sooo tender. The best lamb any of us have ever had. The entire table tried that & loved it. It came with a rosemary dressing that was truly a miracle in your mouth. Anyway, the drinks were well blended. Can't complain one bit about those. We topped the night off with the velvet chocolate cake (mouth watering) and a cappuccino, and now we are counting down until our upcoming reservation. This is by far our new favorite dinner spot. Oh, and PLEASE try the scalloped potatoes if you have the chance. Sooooooo good. The read more

Walked in to the restaurant, not crowded at all, in fact at least 12 open tables. Did not have reservations but look on open table and ten minutes from now was available so clearly they weren't busy with reservations. Hostess said "I have to go set up a table. "Gone for a very long time. Then proceeds to walk us to a BAR booth. Seriously?!!! Do not ever take people to a bar booth unless they request it. Very unprofessional. Told her we wanted a table, she huffed and said I have to set it up. Btw, they were ALL completely setup. She takes us to yet another BOOTH. After I had asked for a table. Unbelievable!!!!! We are VERY frequent customers here with friends and family. Never again. These two chicks in the front had NO clue how to be hostesses. read more

This place is fantastic. Might be my favorite steak in town. Make sure and add the lobster tail and split the meal for a great date night. Splitting food is a great option. Not too many people can eat a 20 ounce steak by themself. The mushroom risotto is fantastic. Everything on this menu is awesome and the service is great. And $54 for a prime steak with two sides is a pretty good deal that for that good of a steak. read more

Food was alright, service was alright. What kind of annoyed me was I called to make a reservation for my birthday. When I called they asked for the occasion and I told them. When I went there they asked again at the host stand and I told them, the waiter asked again and I told them. So after all that and spending $100-200 for each person they didn't offer anything for my birthday, even a dessert. So my friend orders cheesecake for herself and says it's her birthday (me) so do you guys offer anything and the waiter says with attitude I already gave you the dessert options for you to buy. And proceeds to bring out a candle on my friends cheesecake (she paid for this) and she blows it out because it would be gross for me to spit in her dessert. Would think spending that much you could at least offer something for people or don't ask if you don't have anything. read more

Just had a mediocre steak and dinner here. Staff was great!! Just got back to my hotel with my "to go" dessert & no way to eat it...no plastic ware? Come on man! Really? When dropping $125 for dinner, this shouldn't be an issue. Too many other choices on where to go next time. Sorry J. Gilbert's. read more

Between the four of us, we had steak, scallops, lobster and lamb. All were cooked to perfection, except the small filet that came with the scallops, which was more well done than medium. Our server noticed it before the person who had ordered it, and whisked it away for a replacement. The new piece was actually a bigger cut, done perfectly, and delivered by the manager who also offered free dessert for the inconvenience! SUPER restaurant, will be back! read more

My husband and I have enjoyed meals here many times, often stopping in for lunch and a cocktail before shopping. I appreciate that they source responsibly and the service has always been awesome. Whatever we order exceeds expectations. So it seemed like a no-brained for my husband to celebrate his 50th birthday with dinner here. As usual, service, cocktails, and food were all on point. The only reason I did not give them five stars is how they handled the drunk, rude customers who stumbled in toward the end of our meal. After they walked in they seated themselves at the corner of the bar and not long after the woman fell over, chair and all. This started an argument between the two of them which lasted for some time until they ordered drinks. She was not served and had the nerve to ask if they were going to "take care" of her husband by serving him a drink. They did end up bringing him a drink. They also ordered ribs which was depressing because I hoped they would go away quickly. This was a sad end to our evening. We moved a couple of chairs down because the man kept shoving his chair into my husband's. We did speak to the manager to provide feedback afterwards and he was very apologetic. I understand you cannot control who walks through your doors, but you have an obligation to protect the experience of your other patrons. This is the sort of thing you expect at a dive bar, not a fancy steak house. He should not have been served a drink and they should have been asked to leave after she fell over. Even having part of our bill comped did not entirely take the bad taste out of my mouth after this experience. I would have preferred to pay the full bill and left with a happy, untarnished memory of my husband's birthday dinner. read more

Fabulous! My parents took my family of 6 there to celebrate my successful battle with cancer. It was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time! Ambiance is great, our server was pleasant and knowledgeable. The Manhattans are prepared batch style and then aged in oak. Between the 8 of us, we experienced a lot of the menu. The filet was extraordinary prepared a perfect (as I'd ordered) medium rare. I really didn't need my knife, it was perfect! The crab cakes were generous portions and moist and meaty. The sides were all delicious and we had everything at our table; baked potato, mashed potatoes, green beans, asparagus, sautéed spinach and the amazing poblano au gratin potatoes. Everyone loved what they had. Can't wait to make this our go to place read more
