When my wife and I were planning a weekend getaway to Bristol, several locals told us that J Frank was the (only) place to go in town for an upscale, dressed-up, white-tablecloth evening. We had no idea that we were walking into one of the most memorable meals that we've had in twenty-five years of marriage. The service was friendly but restrained, and we were virtually alone in one of the rooms in the converted house (as most people had chosen to eat outside on a pleasant summer evening) - but the food was over-the-top spectacular. We began with a baked brie that was advertised on the menu as "awesome": a marketing decision, by the way, that takes some guts. One bite in, my wife agreed that we could have a few servings of the Brie and call it a night. But we didn't. My wife had steak with shrimp scampi and I had a more ambitious but similarly vertically-arranged surf-and-turf meal (steak, pastry, crab cake, shrimp), and both meals worked phenomenally well. Including sides with the meals was a nice old-fashioned touch - and it also helped keep the meal very reasonable in comparison to a similar (but not as tasty) dinner at a big-city steakhouse. We live over four hours from Bristol and are considering a return visit for a weekend later this year to have another meal at J Frank (and to enjoy another weekend at the Bristol Hotel, a fantastic small-town boutique hotel). It was also terrific to find a place outside of a big-city market that holds something of a dress code: I wore a jacket and tie and my wife wore her pearls and heels - and we did not feel overdressed. I am uncertain as to what happened to this place but it has gone downhill - that is putting it nicely. We were waited on by the bartender. Worst, spastic service! We ordered a beer only to be told 24 minutes later that they no longer had that brand and their cooler was " broken". The food was mediocre and the waiter continued his blundering performance. Instead of providing an itemized receipt prior to payment he simply said he would split the bill between my husband and I and the other couple who were with us - he provided the total and we each supplied our method of payment. When he returned our cards he supplied an itemized receipt. We were charged for the beer we never received and an additional 2 glasses of wine. When we pointed this out , I could tell the solution to overpayment was a problem for him. Well, to save him from unnecessary trouble we decided the the 20.00 overpayment would be part of his tip. He was in agreement. A short time later he returned asking if we realized the total cost of the meal and basically the tip amount was inadequate. I was shocked, stunned and appalled. The original intent had been to leave cash at the table in addition to the 20.00 over charge turned tip! Food and waiter made up for the lackluster hostess greeting, 20 min wait for a drink we couldn't consume, horrible lighting and very loud bar patrons. My wife and I went here for our anniversary the second year in a row. The first time was fantastic, everything was spot on. This year, it was a bit different. Upon entering the restaurant we were "greeted" by a host who seemed to be having a bad day who also made a vulgar comment on his way to the kitchen that I overheard going to the bathroom. They say it's usually the bad experience that gets the review. The food was, however, very good. Our waitress was excellent and I enjoyed her service. As for the host, if you're reading this, we all have our problems. Be grateful you have a job in a climate such as this one-- we won't be returning or recommending any longer! read more

We've been to J Franks multiple times, and always enjoy their food and service. This Sunday brunch is one of the best in town, that includes all the Tri-Cities. Try the veal steak, or the full rack of lamb. Definitely excellent. The potatoes in duck fat, is also one of my favorites. The Beatles include one or two sides, as well as the salad of your choice. The service is very good, and I highly recommend Dave as your waiter. The Sunday brunch is, range from omelets, Nova Scotia salmon, sliced London Broil, turkey or pork roast. They have a multitude of fresh juices, and the typical desserts that you would find at a higher-end buffet. I also would highly recommend their world-class Bloody Mary. read more

Tonight we took John and Stephanie to J Frank's for a belated joint birthday dinner. We were overcome with the quality of the food and the service. We started with cocktails in the bar then moved to our table for 'small plates' sharing of fried asparagus and the chief's version of potato chips. Both were beyond excellent. Our dinner choices varied from steak to lamb chops. All were outstanding. The dessert was also very remarkable. This is unquestionably the best restaurant in the area and may be better than the predecessor original Troutdale. read more

I came here for an event for the 3rd time and waited at the bar for my table. The bar stools are not the correct height for the bar, I am a person of average height and the bar stools are extremely below average of height in order to consume a meal or have a drink! The food was absolutely divine, but the setup was extremely disappointing considering average fine dining bar. This guy came around stating he was the owner and the issue was mentioned and he basically said this is a standing bar. And I said, is that the case then why is there stools available? And he ignored my concern. My personal opinion is if you have the food, atmosphere, and outside seasonal entertainment why can you not accommodate correct height bar stools for a five star restaurant. If I'm paying for a 5 star meal, I expect more! And from small talk in a small town others do too. J Frank should do better for what they are know for! read more

This was our first time dining here. We are from out of town but were attending a large party. We were presently surprised to see the charming old house turned restaurant our host had chosen. The atmosphere and food are absolutely amazing! The service needs just a little to be a 5-star review. When we first arrived and shown to our private dinning room it was several minutes before any staff came in. The hostess whom had greeted us at the door came in and poured water for everyone. Our server did not show up for some time. When she did arrive she seemed very flustered and out of sorts. She left the room several times while taking orders. Things didn't smooth out until the young man performing our wine service came in. I can only assume he was the manager or owner based on his dress. I believe he saved us from what would have been an absolute disastrous dining experience. He was constantly checking on us, assisting her, taking away dirty plates. I can say if we are ever back in this neck of the woods we will defiantly be back to dine... we just hope that we get a better waitress. read more

First off we read a ton of great reviews so we decided to try this place out. Our server was excellent, and the plating was amazing. BUT that's as far as it goes. Taste is always king. You could immediately tell that the food was not fresh. I had the Chilean sea bass and anyone who eats sea bass knows it does not have a strong fishy taste when fresh, but when frozen it does. And my wife had the steak and Oscar . It was presented beautifully but again the food was not fresh and the steak was a little tough and filet mignon should melt in your mouth. One more thing the front walkway said they have cocktails. We requested three different ones and he did not have the ingredients to make them so we told him to make us something sweet. He said he would replicate each drink we requested and he brought us both the same exact drink, which was over poured and underwhelming. This place could be and maybe has been awesome but the decor is dated , their are outlet covers missing and the food was not fresh. Also the back had tons of liquor bottles and trash everywhere. This dinner was 120 dollars and I could have went to a chain restaurant and had fresher food and a warmer experience. read more

My husband and I dined at JFrank for date night a couple of weeks ago. The atmosphere is lovely however it was so loud in the dinning room that we couldn't have a conversation at all. The group seated behind us were extremely loud. The service wasn't great but it wasn't bad. The food was outstanding! I had the cake and steak. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The crab cake was by far the best I have ever eaten. The steak was so tender it melted in my mouth and the two jumbo shrimp that topped it off were seasoned and cooked perfectly. Finally, a lady who appeared to be the front end manager came to the podium. She was very rude and dismissive. Excellent experience all around for myself and five guests on a first time visit. Prompt, friendly greeting. Generous drinks at the bar. Well set table and an attractive environment (in an old city mansion). Expansive, well priced menu, with small and large plates, and an emphasis on seafood. My group enjoyed the soups of the day, tasty salads and a range of entrees from salmon to scallops to beef filet, topped off with peanut butter pie. The food is some of the best I've had while in the Tri-City area. The prices were unbelievable. I will go back.
