Chris at J D Rock gave me an estimate for a screen repair job which I accepted. I reluctantly agreed to a six week delay in the start date. More than two weeks into the delay he ghosted me. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact him, he sent a text stating that a better job came up so he was backing out. So in all fairness, I did not use his services and I saw he only had 1 star here but he had great google rating so I thought I would give him a try. He came to my house the same night. Very nice. Promised a quote right away because it was a time sensitive fix. That quote never came. I texted him the next day. No response. He texted me 3 days later saying he had to go out of town for an emergency. So I'm not sure why he couldn't text me. The people I hired were practically done by the time I got that text. I asked him why he didn't text, no response. While I can't attest to his actual work....I require great customer service. read more

J.D. Rock recently finished our very large, over 1500 sq ft basement. Jon was very hands on with the process from the design all the way to finishing touches. He and his crew were very courteous, professional and skilled at their trades. We especially appreciated Jon's flexibility with design changes and his ability to offer suggestions, guiding us through the process. And there were no surprises on the final bill. We couldn't be happier with how the basement turned out, with an additional bedroom and full bathroom, as well as plenty of storage and living area. I can't give this company even one star. They never finished and left me hanging for $11,500 dollars. I worked with Chris- he was only there for a few hours a day. He never finished- he was always out of town or his mom was sick or whatever. Not timely in responding to texts or emails. Went to the BBBwith this "contractor" only to be denied any recourse with them because he refused to participate. That says a lot right there. Unfortunately I don't have the resources that the past reviewing complaint talked about- I don't know how to fix the mess he left. I'm stuck and been hoodwinked by a very slick person. Don't use this company for anything. Just keep looking for someone else who can do your work without taking your money and taking off. He can do whatever he wants without having to take any responsibility. Please do yourself a favor and don't use this "company" for your project. You'll lose your hard earned money read more

I was looking forward to some solid work after reading good reviews about this company. I see a lot of reviews about Jon, however, I worked with Chris... Not sure if the company changed hands or not... Our project was a very small project, turning our upstairs loft into a 4th bedroom. We needed 1.5 walls and a closet framed and dry walled, my dad pulled the electrical license and completed those repairs himself. We already had floor plans with how that room was supposed to be laid out as it was an option to be a bedroom or a loft when we bought the house. So everything should have been cut and dry. The estimate came in at a good cost and we agreed to start the repairs after making a few adjustments to the estimate details. Initially the communication and response time was prompt, however that didn't last long. He pulled the building permit and began work. He came by for a days work and framed in the closet and 3/4 of the wall but couldn't finish because "he didn't have enough studs" to finish framing. My dad completed the electrical portion of the job at the same time. Unfortunately Chris did not follow the pre-set and agreed upon plans and cut corners ( Literally ) changing the layout which compromised the size of the closet. I was a little upset but, its just a closet and were using this room as a nursery so I figured it would suffice. It was coordinated to have the electrical and framing inspection done at the same time. My wife stayed home from work to be there when the inspectors arrived however, only the electrical inspector showed up, no framing inspector. So I called the county to see what happened and they stated no framing inspection was scheduled. I contacted Chris and he stated there must have been a mistake on the county's side. OK, whatever. So Chris told me that he could take pictures of the framing, take it to the permit office and have it approved off of that since its not a load-bearing wall and everything would be fine. GREAT! So after a few weeks he came back a few nights in a row and finished framing the room and installed the drywall. It took a few more weeks to get him back out to install the door and really finish the project. Our agreement was just to get the room paint ready, as we stated we would paint because we were unsure of the colors we wanted to use at that time. In his estimate that was signed, it stated he would get the walls paint ready which included painting a base coat on all the walls. After his last visit where the doors were installed, he left and I checked out the progress. I could tell he still needed to come back to finish sanding the drywall mud, install the pass through vent over the entrance door and a few other odd and ends. THEN, I noticed he installed the wrong closet door... The door was hinged on the wrong side and the door swung out into the room as opposed to into the wall which again, was outlined on the preset floor plans we agreed upon. I tried to reach out to him multiple times with no luck. I could not get a response back in any capacity ( not uncommon as after the first time out, reaching him was difficult as he used every excuse in the book as to why he couldn't respond) . After a week of no communications, I sent a calm but strong worded email that this was unacceptable and something needed to happen before I had to seek other remedy's. FINALLY I get a response that he was out of town in NJ taking on a job for his cousin and that he would call me back after the weekend when he was back in town. THAT WAS THE LAST I HEARD FROM HIM. After several emails, texts, calls, voicemails, I could not get a response. At this point I figured that was it. He's bailed and left the fixing of the door and the remainder of the repairs up to me to figure out. So that's what I did, with the help of my dad we bought a new door, hung it CORRECTLY, and finished everything else that needed to be completed. COME TO FIND OUT, CHRIS NEVER GOT THE FRAMING INSPECTION APPROVED so you can imagine the time I had when calling for the FINAL inspection. ALL IN ALL WATCH WHO YOU HIRE!!!!!!! read more

Rock has done a number of home improvement projects for us.  Painting, a side entry garage door, a screened deck addition and he replaced our front porch.  Each project has been completed in a timely and professional manner.  J.D. Rock communicates status at each stage of the project by providing descriptions and pictures of the work he's done.  Their workmanship is very high quality and they'll leave the workspace clean and tidy.  J.D. Jon Rock recently completed a job for us while we were away on vacation. The work included painting numerous rooms and ceilings, swapping out bathroom hardware, installing a new light fixture and adding a tile back splash in the kitchen. Jon is friendly and easy to work with. He was also very detailed about knowing exactly the scope of the entire project before we left. We were pleased with the work that was performed upon our return. I will definitely use him for future projects. read more

I would not do business with JD Rock again even if he offered to do it for half price. Or free for that matter. When you meet JD he comes across as very friendly and makes you feel at ease. He comes in with a low bid which makes him seem very attractive but his plan is to get you on the back-end with a lot of extra charges. He intentionally has a very vague contract that he can manipulate to his advantage so that he can nickel and dime you for "extras" that he will claim you added in. Also once he wins your business don't expect to see or hear from him except when he is looking to collect his payments. He told us that the best way to get a hold of him was via email but we found that was just the best way not to get a hold of him. Texts, phone calls, and email went unanswered. Our experience with him was this. When he began the work he did just enough to get us to the point of collecting the first payment. Then he and his crew disappeared for a while and when they returned they worked just enough to get to the second payment and pulled another disappearing act. I believe he is bidding out a bunch of jobs and instead of starting and finishing one to completion, he starts multiple so he can collect multiple payments while keeping you in construction hell. We contracted with JD to perform a master bath remodel. He said in the contract that it should take approximately 2 weeks. He also stated in the contract that he would obtain permits and charged me for them but never pulled them. Now after the fact he is trying to claim that permits were not required for this work. The Frederick County permitting office disagrees with him. My remodel that began in April was supposed to take approximately 2 weeks. Five MONTHS later the job was, and is, still not done. The only way that I could even get JD to show back up to resume working on my bathroom was to threaten to fire him. The friendly JD that had suckered us at contract signing had long since been replaced by an unapologetic everything is the customers fault hot head. I have never in my life received such horrible customer service. And aside from the customer service issue the work which was done is very poor and I have had to redo a great deal of it myself. I am now going through the arbitration process with him because he claims to be done and there is so much work left unfinished. I have also paid a home inspector to come out and check his work and was told that if left as is I am going to have water damage inside and outside of my home from the sloppy work that was done.
