Primarily a yard for contractors. But this review is for DIYers. I needed some wood for a new fence and J&W had the lumber I needed that Lowe's didn't. We knew the exact materials and wood requirements so it was a pretty easy transaction. Assuming you did your homework with your project and know exactly what you need, just drive in and park in their small lot and walk to their sales building. If their lot is full just up along the lumber road and park. Once you get an invoice they'll fetch you a helper and they'll tell you where to park next. If you have multiple lumber needs you may have to drive from one place to another. It's pretty straightforward. Where you may run into difficulty is if you're not really a seasoned DIY and you're looking for advice or suggestions. You'll get more information here than say Home Depot, but ultimately they'll want to refer you to a contactor especially if it's a large project. - High quality products. - Many wood options if you're building a fence. - Helpful with the selection (checking for warped boards etc etc) - You will also get help loading into your truck. - 10% discount if you have a valid contractor license. read more

I shadowed my father as we arrived to one of his favorite places to purchase quality wood for special projects. This visit is for a few special projects, but they are all the same... Butterfly enclosures. Mask is required. We drive through the gates and you could already smell the scent of wood in the air. We park within the gates close to the type of wood we need to purchase. Every type of wood you may need are sectioned and labeled. An employee was there quickly to assist. You select your wood, flag down an employee, he will write up your order, you enter the building to pay. The employees offer to load your purchase, which if very helpful. Inside the building where you pay you will find supplies, such as screws, nuts, bolts, varnish etc.. The floors are marked at the register for social distancing while waiting in line. We found the wood we needed for the projects, and actually had to make another trip back for more wood. The customer service is friendly and helpful which makes for a nice shopping experience. JW always comes through with top quality wood that is pre-selected by the vendors they buy from. It meets higher standards before it reaches there yard. I arrived at J&W Lumber after visiting one of their competitors down the street. Having spent 20 minutes or so looking to find someone to help me with a home improvement project, nobody showed up. At J&W I met Bill, to whom I explained my project needs. Bill suggested the place down the street might be better equipped to help me! I guess the fact that I am female and wearing UGG boots was a give away that I'm not a contractor. This translated to "i could careless if you are standing there staring at me" from the employees. I walked in to discuss siding. The west coast representative sent me in to see samples of his product. I was told that this J & W was the only one to sell the product in San Diego County. I walked in, there was one employee behind the counter, one gentleman being served and a second one waiting in line. I walked in and was ignored. No greeting, no sorry for the wait, we will get to you as soon as we can. No calling other employees over the loud speaker to tell them a line was forming.. NOTHING. Then another man walked in and waited next to me (he ignored me too). An employee named Leo walked in, acknowledged the room and then asked the man standing next to me to come up first, "let me finish with you first Bob". Five minutes into their transaction a new man walked in, walked past all of us and straight up to Leo and Bob, I thought he was with Bob.. NOPE new customer, went ahead of all of us.. Leo was happy to oblige him. 20 minutes later it was finally my turn. Turns out Leo had no idea of the product I wanted, it has never been sold here. Told me Jason (the rep) only sold solid wood and there is no way he discussed sythentic, manufactured, PROCESSED product with me (he kept changing terms on me and making it a point). I was given two DIFFERENT colored samples, labeled with the SAME color name and codes. I took them because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Of course they were not what I came in for. I drove all the way from the East County to be treated like sawdust and they couldn't even help me. Leo was not friendly, condescending and someone I hope I never have to work with again. My take is that the only way you will be helped at this location is to be male. read more

I have purchased lumber from J&W. Probably spent 2 grand on a project I built. I am not a contractor. I am reading the reviews from others and I'm not surprised to see such negative reviews. By that I mean, I got the feeling that as a homeowner walking in their store they prefer contractors. I never knew who was going to take care of me, never inviting, always busy. I think in this day and age 'every' customer is important and you need to convey that feeling or your going to go out of business. It's been over a year since I have been there, maybe they have cleaned up their act. I'm doing some building again. We'll see.... read more

Went to the Escondido location, I am a small contractor in north county, drive by J&W a lot working on 3 projects that require lumber 1 of the 3 requires composite decking 17'x35' (Trex) was looking to do an immediate purchase (Saturday May 30th) walked into the showroom, Jacob asked me if I needed any help and I said yes, I need pricing on some lumber and pricing on Trex, at that point he flipped his card and said "send me what you need via email and I'll get back to you when I can" with that said I walked out and was blown away! I was pretty much ready to make the entire purchase! I will not return or do any business with this company! That is bad service! Never judge who can walk in and make a decent purchase! The guys around the corner took their time to work with me and provide me with a fair price! Management you guys need to work on that! read more

This is going to be a long story but worth it. I was building a horizontal wood fence at my house. I needed good quality wood and went to JW after driving past them a thousand time. Jacob helped talk me through the different woods and helped me order what we needed. He was an excellent help and very knowledgeable. A couple days after receiving the wood we called because we wanted to match the stain that they had on the display out in the parking lot. I can't remember who we talked to, but that's beside the point...we were told it was sequoia redwood...fast forward a bit and we have our contractor starting to stain the wood with what they recommended and it is definitely not the same color as their display...honestly I was irritated and stressed because he stained 13 boards before I could stop him after seeing the color was totally wrong. I know this is ultimately not JW's responsibility to give me the correct color but we called for their expertise and expected it to be right...with that said, I called them and spoke with Bill the store manager. I CANNOT express how amazing his customer service was. Honestly the whole staff. I told him the situation and that we basically can't use the 13 boards. He told me to come in and we could talk it out. As soon as I got there the other guys in the store already knew I was coming and already had a can of the correct color stain on the counter and they said it was going to be free for me! On top of that Bill walked me to the bin with the wood and told me to pick out 13 new boards completely free of charge. No questions asked, no issues at all, just amazing customer service and standing behind their product. I can't express how amazing these guys are and they definitely have a lifetime customer going forward! Well, I guess we were ready to buy a pergola today. We went in on Monday, since my wife and I were both off. They could not give us the price on the pergola because they have so many options. I tried to give them as much information as possible to get a price. I don't get many days off. I was in about 10:15 on Labor Day. We were told by both people working they had a short day, one said he does not like working on holidays. I guess they figured I was wasting their time, so they asked if I was ready to buy today.... Honestly uhmmmmmm maybe perhaps if I knew the price. They sold me on the cedar, even showed me the wood very nice (one please). Ok so I was ready to spend 2-3K... But they were not ready so sell me one. So I bought one from the competition. Not easy either but at least they wanted to make the sale (or at least take care of the customer). I really don't know where to start to let everyone know you need to buy your lumber at JW Lumber in Escondido and nowhere else...! I have been to all JW Lumber locations in San Diego County, and everyone was extremely niice, but my review is about the Escondido location because this is where I bought the most of my lumber. The Escondido site is at the source: Right behind it, they store all the extra lumber that they are ready to ship out to their SD locations. I needed to buy wood for my rooftop deck. I decided on Mangaris. Problem for me was that there was a lot of variation in the color of the wood, the marbeling, some oil stains on some boards, etc. I was not going to settle on "just okay" pieces and the guys working at the Escondido location were so knowledgeable and yet understanding to what I was looking for. Long story short: After 3 trips and inspecting many, many pieces of Mangaris, and thanks to the help of the guys working there, I have the perfect stack of Mangaris sitting in my garage. I would not have gotten there without Chris' patience and help. He's the guy behind the couner you want to talk to! Patiently pulling out and inspecting pieces with me were Anthony (thank you!!), and Levy. Anthony also helped my friend Brenda lift the lumber onto her truck and making it secure for the ride South. On a Tuesday I walked inside to get an estimate on some materials for a patio. I spoke to Mike and he said he would draw up the estimate. Didn't hear from him the next day (wednesday) like he promised. The following day (thursday) I called him and he said he was sorry and that he was TOO busy, so he didn't have time to make my estimate and that he would do it later and will call me back. I didn't hear from him later that Thursday or the next day (friday). I called JW Lumber escondido on Saturday and spoke to someone who said that they will have Mike call me back about the estimate because he was the one working on it. I never heard back from Mike or anybody else. On the following Monday I drove down to J W Lumber in Escondido and vented my frustration to the company rep Bruce. He apologized for Mike and took the time to draw up my estimate that day. (thanks Bruce) I decided that I will not do business with the company because; if I had such a difficult time just ordering the materials, I did not want to risk my money at this business. I have extreme doubt that they would deliver all of my material in a timely manner. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY! Kinda surprised by the reviews! I went in looking for options/answers to questions on a deck project my husband and I were thinking about doing. Their displays and samples were super helpful and Adam and Bruce had answers to all my questions. They recommended vetted contractors to us and in the end we were able to make an informed decision about something that on the outset I was not all too informed about. The contractor we chose was great and it seemed like there was a good working relationship and good communication between him and the folks at JandW. Plus, their prices are extremely competitive with the "box stores" and far better quality!!! Service, quality and price. I got it all. Would give them a 5 except when I went back to purchase my gate hardware, their "in stock" selection was not available. Perhaps I confused them but what I ordered did not work.
