I am visiting my brother in Lawrence, KS. Whenever I am visiting, I like to walk the family dog. Meet Yuki, a beautiful 11 year old husky. In an effort to be more active, I thought why not walk her to a nearby coffee shop by the house. J&S Coffee is one of coffee shops nearby. I am not sure if pets are allowed but I left Yuki outside. Inside, the shop looks friendly and the service was good. I didn't stay long. The latte was good with reasonable price, $5.35 for a 20 oz latte. Although my visit was short but I could not see a reason to not give this shop a 5 stars. I will return but will stay longer the next time. read more

I love to meet up with friends in the afternoons for a cortado at J&S; they don't serve it directly with a glass of water but there's some close by the register, so I guess it counts, The prices are very fair, the staff are consistently friendly and capable of making drinks correctly, and the vibe is very chill. The last time I got served my cortado in a to-go cup instead of a ceramic cup, but the service and vibe more than make up for some small misses. If you haven't tried them out; do! They're always busy but it's the kind of shop where all are welcome. They'll make room for you! read more

I had a really frustrating experience at your establishment. I was sitting there for a short time and hadn't ordered yet, but I was about to go up and get something to eat. Before I even had the chance, the owner approached me in a condescending way and made it clear that I was taking up space meant for regulars. That interaction felt incredibly disrespectful. Everyone who walks in should feel like they have the right to be there, whether they've ordered yet or are about to. I wasn't lingering without intention--I was planning to support the business--but instead I was made to feel unwelcome and judged. I've honestly never felt more disrespected in a place like that, and it completely changed my perception of the environment. No customer should be spoken to in that way. read more

Coffee was terrible and tasted off, Very low food selection and no variety on the menu, and to top it all off, the management there are incredibly rude. I saw some poor young college woman get yelled at by either the owner or a manager, but he was such an asshole to this poor girl trying to study in the coffee shop because she was "taking up space and driving away his regulars". One of my favorite places to meet a friend for coffee or tea. Service is quick and excellent. Tables, large private booths, and a cozy small and comfortable area in the back of the shop. This place was doing well a few years ago. More and more as I've gone in there, the staff have been less and less helpful or fun, exciting, or pleasant to interact with. Today was the worst. I described my desired drink to a thin, 20-year old dude about 5'11" with buzzed brown hair, and after typing some things into the register for about 5 seconds, he looked up at me and told me the store has a similar drink of their own, which they've given a name to. I told him that I would prefer my drink the way I ordered it, and he stood there looking past me without a response. I repeated myself. He scrunched his face in a grimace and said "hunh?" I repeated myself, nearly shouting. His face slackened back into a blank, distinctly not-caring expression. He looked at me as if I did not know my own preferences, slowly moved back to the machine and punched more buttons. I walked to the back to use the restroom. When I came back up, there was a coffee sitting on the counter where they typically leave made drinks. The only staff person in sight was the same guy. He was standing at the frothing machine with his back squared as much as possible to the position of the cup. I stood there for a second or two, finally near-shouted to him, asking if the cup were mine. No response. I whistled loudly. No response. At this point, another staff person came to the counter area, and as much as possible, sought to avoid engaging with me. I whistled loudly, again. The second staff person finally turns to me with a disgruntled, innocent look. I asked if it was my coffee, and she shrugs and says "I guess so". I just laugh, take the cup, and leave. read more

This is my dad's regular spot so we stopped by for some coffee while I was in town this weekend. The owner greeted my dad by name and the girl at the register offered to help us with any questions. Their latte list is expansive and creative. They have options ranging from skinny to over the top sugary breves. I opted for the pumpkin cheesecake iced latte with oat milk. For something that sounded like it was going to be too sweet it was actually really nice. I paired it with a lemon poppyseed muffin which was a little dry. My dad's choice of pumpkin muffin was definitely better. I really would have liked to try some of their other options while I was in town I guess I'll just have swing by next time! read more

There was a table of four men who were listening to loud sports on one of their phones and laughing, and the owner talked in a very loud voice. Coffee is not really my thing. I usually can't distinguish a latte from a cappuccino. I don't drink it very often and when I do, it's just a simple coffee. Simple girl. A friend suggested we meet for coffee here and that's how I ended up at J & S Coffee. I looked at the daunting menu and my friend told me he order for me. He knew I was lost. He ordered an es-Capps-latt-mocha type drink that had orange flavor. It was DELICIOUS! Everything from the smell to the appearance. Staff was so helpful and they kept wanting to know how I liked my drink. I liked it so much that I almost ordered another on the spot. I like this little shop. It is comfortable, quaint and has a very good laid back vibe. It is nicely arranged and there is a lot of light coming into the store. This coffee shop,is located inside a busy strip mall but it works. There is plenty of room for parking and the store is easy to access. The prices seemed reasonable and the coffee was quality product. I could tell by the smells that the other coffees were as good as the cup I enjoyed. I met the owner and he was extremely personable. He told me the history of the coffee drink I had consumed and he regaled me with a few other stories. We had a very pleasant interchange. Great coffee, reasonable prices and pleasant staff. A favorite place. Friendly owners, fun staff, and excellent coffee. You haven't lived until you've tried the Valencia. It utilizes the blend that is made in-house (and you can see the roaster in the back) with a touch of orange and just a little sweetness. Definitely a favorite. The "hot and dirty" chai is also excellent. The shop seems to be leaning toward more specialty drinks that feel and taste gourmet. Of course, they also have a plethora of flavorings if you want to get your quadruple pump raspberry vanilla diabetes-in-a-cup. The shop also sells coffee by the bag and it is fresh and pretty darn good. The coldbrew is delightful. There are also usually cookies made fresh my the owners and they are melt-in-your-mouth good. At a dollar a pop, I have become a true junkie. Haven't tried the fruit and cheese trays, but I like that it's something that isn't a pastry. Sometimes it's nice to have a lower carb alternative. I see a lot of reviews from years ago commenting on the atmosphere and staff. I will say that a lot has changed, as there is a new owner as of last year. All of the baristas are sociable and fun, and the new owners are super nice. They've redone some of the counters and repainted some of the shop, and did much-needed work on the bathroom. I anticipate that things will continue to change for the better. The hubby and I stop by whenever we are in town. If you are passing up this shop when you live in the area, you're missing out. read more

Even though they're often too busy inside for me to get a seat to study, it's worth stopping in just to get a coffee to go, because this is some of the better coffee in Lawrence. After a morning cup of hotel coffee we were in desperate need of some good java. J and S was the closest option so off we went. This cafe is deceptive on the outside. It is rather large once inside and it is a happening spot. The only downfall for me is seeing the coffee dispensers lined up against the wall. It shouldn't be a red flag for me but it just makes me feel like it isn't good quality when I see that. We were proven wrong here, the coffee was piping hot and smooth. I requested a cafe au lait and was handed a coffee cup and told to fill it then come back and they added the steamed milk. A little different but I imagine it keeps the line moving so no complaints here. read more

I can't say enough good things about this coffee shop! I was in town for my sons basketball tournament and decided to try it because it was close by. I was immediately greet with a very friendly welcome by Steve who I believe is the owner! He greeted me in a warm welcoming way that you would get from a old friend which was so surprising and refreshing for this day and age. He then gave me some helpful suggestions which I asked for. There no short of options here which include lots of fun drink choices and exciting flavors! I settle on Bella's brew latte which was delicious! Then after he found out it was my first time he decided to make me "the Valencia" just to try something new complimentary on top of the drink I ordered. The prices are extremely reasonable especially compared to everyone else's but not lacking in quality! I was happy to go again this week as I was in town again and got the same level of high quality service and great coffee. I will definitely be visiting anytime I'm in town and can promise you won't be disappointed. This coffee shop is a rare gem that I hope is around forever! read more

I don't get to Lawrence very often but when I do I will definitely stopping by! They have a wide variety of drinks and everything is right there to see. He even let me come behind the counter! I have to agree with some of things said about J & S. I'd really like to love the place as a home grown coffee shop and they do produce fine in-house roasts that are excellent for taking home. For me that's about where it ends. The espresso drinks here are poorly crafted every time I visit. There's a lot more to a latte than just heating milk and then dumping it over espresso which was what I got today. If you're paying close to $4 for a cup I'd like it done professionally. Today's milk was far too much foam, poured before it settled after being heated and not the proper temperature, lacking in richness. The last few times I've been in the help has the attitude of minimum wage so if you're looking for a friendly hello on the way in or a "thanks for coming in" at the end, no dice. Decor: it's a strip mall, yes. But the interior has been treated like it too. Messy, usually, and a bulletin board that I've yet to understand what the purpose of is other than to host way too many postings to read. No clue what that's about but it looks like something that doesn't belong. Unfortunately for J & S the coffee landscape in town is changing rapidly for the better. I'd like to see the service and drinks improved and with a new Star****s across the street they'll gladly take the customers away if the opportunity presents itself. read more

The first thing you notice is the wonderful smell of fresh roasted coffee. Original art work on the walls and a free library of books to share. The coffee was delicious I drink mine black and it was full flavored and delicious. I did not want the cup to end but we were headed back to our home in Iowa. My friend had a complicated latte drink of some kind that they got perfect in spite the complicated instructions. Visited with the owner on our way out. Wonderful friendly place. Stopped here to grab coffee while driving across country. Was greeted by a gentleman I believe is the owner who offered to pull out some toys for my daughter. Lawrence has many excellent coffee houses - and (as perhaps might be expected) they are all located Downtown. No surprise, that's the 'cool' area of the city. But for those of us stuck living or working in the cookie-cutter suburban wasteland of West Lawrence, it would be nice to get some decent coffee, and thankfully, J&S is there to fill this java-sized hole. Do not let the generic strip mall location fool you - J&S knows its coffee chops. The coffee is roasted on site in small batches, and it excellent, well above the grocery store Starbucks stuff you can find down the street. J&S generally has 2 premium regular and 1 decaf brewing at any one time, and they have the usual collection of espresso drinks, enhanced with some creative milk and syrup combinations, such as a Mexican spiced mocha (a favorite treat of mine). The atmosphere is fairly utilitarian, but not bad. There's room to work, and it isn't too loud, and there a larger coach in the back, although the coach is right next to a kids play area which, while it might be great for parents on the go, doesn't make for a relaxing environment if there are kids there. J&S is pretty much a weekday place - they close early in the evenings and are not open at all afternoons on weekends. But, if you live (or as I do, work) on the west side of Lawrence, J&S is a caffeine treasure - a great place to take a coffee break, or stop at before heading into the office - and on coffee quality, as good (if not better) then any other place in town. read more

What a great Gem on the west side of town! Thanks for opening guys Lawrence doesn't have many coffeehouses west of Iowa. This place is very similar to Z's. The coffee is also artisan roasted (and supplies coffee to Signs of Life). The place is very functional and professional. It's in a strip mall, so that's kinda telling. You'll never find students here, it's a clearly professional crowd. Don't plan on relaxing or chilling here. It's a place to get things done at. No comfy chairs or subdued lighting. It's decor would be considered aseptic if it weren't for the children's play area and some really outstanding photograph work done by Lawrence's Premier Children's Photographer: White Lotus. It's worth going just to see these photos. I really respect and admire her photography. Great choice for J&S to show their work. Outstanding staff that really works hard to please it's customers. Same group of employees, which encourages consistency and reliability--no student workers here (or at least it seems so). Oh and I never see people smoking outside. Ah...no walking through a a battlefield to get that cup of coffee. Don't plan on a late night coffee run at this place. It has business hours, not the typical coffeehouse hours. Do buy some beans for home though. If you're feeling sinful, get the Mexican mocha. Sure it's from a mix, but so is Ben and Jerry's and nobody complains about that. This is the place to go to have a "off-site" chat with an employee. Great gossip about the corporate world at this place. Also excellent if you live on the West Side of town and have to drive to Topeka. Pros: Great coffee, great staff, and great consistency..and let's not forget those photos. This place seems like a coffee shop for middle-aged people who don't really like coffee but want to be seen as someone who likes coffee. If you like Chili's and Applebee's you might like this place, but if you like local restaurants, this isn't for you. I'm still trying to figure out J & S Coffee. Between J & S and Scone lady, I have no idea how they pay the high priced rents in their strip center locations. The hours are cumbersome at best. I hardly ever see a lot of customers in J & S. Yes, they have some loyal neighborhood customers that I see in there regularly. I still wonder how much business they have lost with Starbucks to the immediate east and north of them. Literally within a baseball throw distance. The coffee appears to be roasted in-house. Not a bad product. Just lacking something I can't put my finger on. The espresso based drinks are good but can be overly sweet like many places. My advice is to ask for easy syrup. Staff is friendly and service is usually pretty fast. Not a lot of seating options, but then again not sure if they could justify adding more seats/tables. Maybe psychological, but I absolutely hate the ambiance and decor inside J & S. Coffee shops need to have an urban look & feel to them. J & S is cold & stale, with no life at all. Not my cup of tea (er.. coffee). I do appreciate having a coffee shop on the west side of town. However, this place was much louder than I expected (granted, I came near the lunch hour), making it difficult to work. The children's area was very loud when I came in and there were many people working on business deals fairly loudly. The music is also fairly distracting (more like mix radio than the ambient, contemplative background music I prefer). So this doesn't seem like the place to go if you are working solo and need some peace of mind. The lighting is okay. The decor is fairly drab (I wouldn't say aseptic; more like "worn"). The chairs are pretty uncomfortable, there aren't many places to sit, and the tables are tiny (which doesn't lend a very large workspace). Also, I tried the Mayan (not Mexican) mocha, and I really didn't like the taste; I'd say it is more like cinnamon eggnog or cider than mocha. Granted, I haven't tried any other drinks. Again, my main issue is the distracting business conversations going on in a fairly small space. I need relative quiet for my work and that is a deal-breaker. If you want a quieter atmosphere, tastier drinks, and bigger tables, I recommend going next door to the Juice Stop instead. Could be a good place to go to work out a business deal though. This is by far my favorite coffee shop in town. Joe has my coffee started when he sees me pulling up! Always a good conversation! My boys love the scones too. I don't routinely get coffees that are jazzed up. I'm simple. Either plain coffee or a soy latte. I've never had a bad one and I would say I'm a coffee drinker. If my coffee isn't from Joe's it's straight from the coffee I order from Costa Rica and pressed in my french press. I'm pretty picky. He's got some great choices to buy bulk from as well. As far as the place. All coffee shops have their own atmosphere. If you are coming here to cram for finals or have a quiet conversation then it's probably not the place for you. Although grab a coffee before you go somewhere else! It is a coffee shop not a library. Many of the locals meet up here and most of the customers know Joe or other customers so there is a lot of welcoming conversations. I'm thankful they are always nice to my kids here.
