This is my second review. Their bagels are very good and so are their breakfast sandwiches. I typically go through drive-through. My only complaint is that service is slow. Like very slow. I tried to speed up the process once by calling my order in ahead of time but they don't take call in orders and there is no option on the app. I begged and they took my call in order. lol The staff is very friendly but slow. We are big fans of Z's. It is consistently excellent--and we would know. We frequent it atleast 3 times a week! The baristas are always friendly and know exactly how to make my rather picky order of coffee. And I've had the bagels several times--always fresh, warm and yummy. The ok: My breakfast bagel was fine. The Wi-Fi seemed strong. The not good: This place is dark and dreary with little charm- black ceilings, black shades drawn, unsightly brown painted walls. At first they played music, then nothing at all. My pumpkin spice coffee tasted perfumey. The staff is nice but clueless- I asked them to use my own glass coffee cup to avoid microplastics (hot liquid + wax lined cup = not something I want to drink) and they forgot, and gave me a single use cup. read more

Ohmygawd. I need to have this place closer. As a coffee junkie, I enjoy trying non-chain local spots and comparing them with one or two of my go-to purist-style drinks. Z's Divine Espresso is now near the top of my "oh, heck yes" list of coffee places. Drat! that it's so far away I can only describe how incredible the coffee is from only one visit. If all of their offerings were like this one, then I couldn't go wrong stopping by on my next pass through the area. There was no over-brewed or bitter after taste. It was a smooth drink from start to finish and didn't start out with a burn-my-tongue temperature. I confess to being a little concerned in the drive-thru. I understand each place has its own way of describing the different size options, but there was so much on this menu, I couldn't easily read it and finally just ordered a medium. After apologizing to the person at the window about not being able to figure it out, she told me no problem because they also "speak normal" when it comes to drink sizes. July 1, 2025 6:15am Friend went thru drive-thru and ordered 2, 12 oz dark roasts. Coffee hot and got burned AGAIN ... lids came off BOTH cups of coffee AGAIN ... Coffee all over self, clothing and truck ... Back home to change clothes & clean up mess AGAIN..... The coffee wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't really stellar for the price. I got a 20oz regular coffee w/ some dairy free milk and half syrup and it was 7.60. For it being a brewed coffee it definitely wasn't outstanding but it was satisfactory! The service was great though it was suuuuper quick which I appreciate. I will always be a fan of Z's because they were first coffee shop in Lawrence that made drive through coffees available. Life is better with drive-through coffee. And now they've opened this satellite location in a former fast food joint on busy 31st Street--and darned but they did a great job fixing up the place to give it a proper coffee house--internet users like myself that like to suck joe and wireless rejoice. Open about a month, I literally drove by on my way somewhere else and promptly did a u-turn to stop in. Good coffees, they roast their own, but don't come expecting high latte art--mine came in a to go cup even though I specified having it in. Sadly, the coffee culture in Lawrence has been a work in progress for ages and continues to be hit or miss. With a built-in kitchen from the previous tenants they're said to offer more baked goods and like fare, although I didn't explore that. With the terribly disappointing closure of Dunn Bros. for yet another run-of-the-mill, average kind of sandwich chain in an area already rife with too many (23rd Street), the opening of another Z's is a welcome development. read more

Last month I asked for a pour-over and the employee gave me a regular brewed coffee without telling me it was not a pour-over. She gave me attitude and said she was too busy. Today the same employee gave me attitude and said she was too busy to do a pour-over. In my business we never deny a customer a product they ask for. We say we'd be happy but it may take a little longer. When I confronted her her attitude was 'how dare you question me'. I went to another coffee shop and have found my new home for my favorite coffee. Too bad one employee can bring down a whole business. :( read more

Two stars for the worst decaf espresso I've ever tasted. I've had lovely regular caffeinated espresso drinks and lattes here for months but recently went through the drive-thru on a Sunday afternoon and decided to get decaf. It tasted like an ashtray. in a very odd location way out in eastern Lawrence, but quite accessible from the highway, and actually not a bad cup of coffee. I've only been here twice, but I was impressed with it both times. The coffee is good and the staff are usually very pleasant, but the owner needs to be more attentive to details like cleanliness. The men's room was not updated at all from when this was a Mexican restaurant, so it looks shabby and is usually dirty. The old 9th street location suffered from similarly dirty facilities, so this seems to be a trend -- or a trademark. I'm posting this review because the urinal on 31st street has been broken for more than a month and is pretty disgusting. One gets the impression of a cheap or simply unconcerned owner. For better coffee and nicer -- and cleaner -- environments, go to J&S on 6th and Wakarusa or Alchemy on Mass. For the best coffee in town, but in a cramped space, try La Prima Tazza. read more
