While driving up to spend Thanksgiving with my family in the redwoods, my brother in law and his wife got in a car accident that rendered their vehicle inoperable. While they got banged up, they fared better than their car. What a nightmare: 800 miles from home, car wrecked in the evening two days before Thanksgiving in a relatively rural area you don't know well. Apparently CHP called J&M to tow the vehicle, and they arrived promptly. The officer gave my family a ride back to their hotel, but they soon realized they had left a few things in their car. The next day--the day before Thanksgiving, we called J&M to see if we could retrieve some things from the vehicle, including much-needed medical equipment. They arranged for us to meet them in Arcata, and the time aligned with picking up a rental car in Eureka. The fellow we met was friendly and professional. Brother in law filled out a little paperwork, then we followed the driver to a second yard where the car was secured. He opened the gate and waited for us to retrieve my brother's personal items from the car. No one wants to get their car towed, or find themselves in a situation requiring that service. But our experience with this company was that they are prompt, direct, say what they do and do what they say. Unfortunately my experience with J&M towing was extremely unpleasant. My original quote was "$135 Trinidad to Arcata pick you In 2 hours". Before The driver and I departed for Arcata I asked if I could use the restroom and get money from an ATM machine the driver was extremely rude and stand off ish tord me saying he was too busy to wait and he had to go ASAP. I completely understood that he was busy and has other Customers so I offered to pay a dollar per minute for every minute he waited for me while I was in the restroom. He agreed although when I came out of the restroom between 10 and 15 minutes later my vehicle was Offloaded from the tow truck and the driver about to leave. At this point I had been stranded with my vehicle for almost 24 hours and was pretty upset knowing he was going back to Arcata anyways(his tow yard is maybe a block away from my mechanic shop destination). Through my anger and frustration I understood where he was coming from And tried not to take it personally so I scheduled the tow for the next morning at 10 AM. We agreed on the same price and even confirmed it that evening. Fast forward to 8 AM the next morning I called the driver to confirm the 10 AM pick up. He said his driver would be there around 10A.m. to get my vehicle to my mechanic in Arcata right before I was getting off the phone with him he told me the price was now $150. This was the very first mention of the price increasing from the original verbal agreement of $135 on two separate occasions (phone calls). When I asked him why the price increase his response was that I made him wait 15 minutes the day before when he ended up bailing on the job. I told him I was happy to pay him for waiting for me while I was in the restroom but he did not wait for me he unloaded my vehicle and left me there stranded overnight. He refused to honor his original quote of $135 so I told him that there were three other tow companies in town I was going to give a call and check their prices. I can't express How udisrespectful this gentleman was towards me when his response was calling me a "liar" and saying there's "actually four other companies and you'll be lucky if you can get it towed for less than $200" And hung up on me before I could respond. The kicker of this whole experience is the first tow company(A&M towing) I called after I was done with J&M Quoted me $120 and pick my van up 45 mins later. Now obviously I was pleasantly surprised since I had just been called a liar and told I wouldn't get this done for less than $200. My experience with A&M towing was night and day compared to J&M towing. The dispatch lady was extremely polite and friendly the driver and his helper were polite and friendly and they were able to get this done in a timely manner. Unfortunately I didn't get the gentleman's name from J&M but I do not understand how you can run a business and be that stand off-ish disrespectful and dishonest towards your paying customers and come to find out he charges the high end of the scale compared to his competitors. At the end of the day I wasn't really worried about the amount of money it was gonna cost to have my vehicle towed I was just baffled at the behavior of what seem to be a boss or manager. LONG STORY SHORT- extreme lack of customer service, Disrespectful/rude, lack of compassion, dishonesty and expensive are all phrases that could easily Describe my experience with this company. They Word cheaper much more polite and customer service oriented and just a pleasure to work with I would choose them if you were looking to tow a vehicle in the near future. read more

They towed my car two and a half blocks and charged me $400 and then decided that they're closed on Saturday which I've never heard of in my life so charged me another $125 just to drive down from his house while he's giving me attitude to accept my money. 540 dollars for two and a half blocks and closed on a Saturday. Should be criminal that they're allowed to do this. Worst experience with a tow company I've ever had. They are only in business to exploit people that get their cars towed by the police, it's not an actual business model it's just extortion legally that is sanctioned and allowed by the city for them to take away from people that are already losing everything. read more

I am a 75 year old Lady. After the amount of $1130.00 I was finally able to drive away with my car. I have NEVER been so angry, frustrated, as I was trying to get my car released to me. Seemed like every 5 min, another charge was added. Did you know that on a Monday one can have them open their gate for free?? Yes, any other day it will cost you $100 on TOP of the tow fee and storage fee. I had been removed from my car for medical reasons. Then I was quoted $56 a day for storage. I was in the Hospital , St. Joseph , Eureka Cal. I called to find out how much it would be to get my car. It was at the first I called , $864. I told the not so nice man that I was on Social Security and did not even make that much a month. I asked if there was a way to make payments. His very RUDE answer was NO, I do not except payments. I asked about my insurance, he said, the State only allows so much and he would not accept if I had insurance to cover this. I didn't understand what he meant about the State. Never the less I still didn't have the money, nor did I have anyone that could pay this. There was NO compassion , NO understanding, NO professionalism. After another day or two, I was able to be helped by a group that helps with things like this. They just needed an actual Bill, the amount showing so they could fax the fee's. I called to inform J&M , with the fax number for them to send the copy of the bill, and was informed that they do NOT do that. I was upset once again knowing that the bill could not would not be paid unless the group willing to pay, had an actual bill. I may have lost my cool and was told to "f.... yourself" and then the man hung up. I would NEVER recommend ANYONE to have anything to do with this company EVER. I read more

This is a highly positive shot out for J & M Towing in Arcata, Ca. Yesterday I accidentally locked my keys in my vehicle. It was Veteran's Day and I was freaked out. I called Robert, the owner of J & M Towing and he was EXCELLENT to talk to, highly reassuring, here in 20 minutes and got into my car in a few minutes and the keys were successfully retrieved. I was so relieved. My insurance info was taken and no cash taken from my wallet. A job well done by a man with integrity and decency. I will never call any other towing service and I would also like to report I did initially call a competitor, Buddy's towing and they were HORRIBLE to work with, would not accept my insurance, and wanted $130 from me up front. This is a RIP off! The service area charge would not exceed $90. Then I would have to haggle with my insurance Co. For reimbursement. NEVER has this been the case. I will never work with Buddy's. First off I will start by saying I am responsible for getting pulled over, and the consequences that arise with my ticket. Getting my car towed from my own property is on another level though. Completely terrible experience with these people. I had my car overnight there and payed arcata police department $125 and thought that was it for releasing my car.. well I call J & M and this gentleman on the phone (the owner) was completely sarcastic and decided to charge me $400 to get my car out. I payed a whopping $525 to get my car THAT WAS PARKED IN MY APARTMENT COMPLEX. Not to mention these people at J & M are unprofessional and have more bad reviews than good. So I'm sorry if anyone has to do business with this company because they really do wax you from your money. Apparently they wax you from your items too according to other reviews. Luckily the guy who helped me get my car out was somewhat nice. The manager is completely unprofessional. I would think twice and do some research if you needed a tow and are stuck somewhere. Robert was very professional and extremely helpful! Both of our cars were broken down on an off ramp, he helped get one running and towed the other. He gave us some really helpful advice and even said we could call him if we had any questions about repairs. He helped make a hopeless situation much more tolerable. We called a few towing services and J&M were by far the most reasonably priced. He was on another job when we called, but gave us an accurate estimate of how long we would have to wait and even showed up a little earlier than expected. I made a police report & later received a letter from J & M saying my car had been towed & in their possession. So the guy who stole it had apparently ditched it. So I called them & They said I had to pay all this $ to get it out. I told them everything that has happened & that it was stolen & why in the world should I have to pay for MY property that was taken from me? They didn't give two shits. I Never was able to get it out & couldn't come up with the money. Esp considering my cash was stolen too. I still don't have a vehicle & everything has become a huge task. Like simple things such as grocery shopping. I have to walk to store & back & you can only carry so many bags at a time. So thanks. Thanks a LOT. Towing happens, and usually by fault of the perpetrator; I don't deny this, however, my experience with this company was terrible. I was parked for maybe 10 minutes. Upon seeing my car getting towed away I attempted to wave down the driver with no success. I called the company with the truck still in sight and the man on the phone said that he would send the driver back. The driver got back about 2 minutes later and dropped off my car and proceeded to charge me $250. I was polite and everything, but still, $250 for driving around the block? They drove about 2 blocks from their location to begin with. There was no ticket or attempt to contact me as the owner, and considering that I was in the building for 5 maybe 10 minutes, I would not be surprised if they saw me go in and didn't attempt to contact me. To make things better, they put my car down facing the wrong way on a skinny one way street. I have never dealt with a more unethical, unprofessional business. read more
