We have driven past this little cafe hundreds of times because we live just a few miles down 70. So, we finally decided to give it a try, and we are so glad we did! We enjoyed the lunch specials with seafood and two sides -- hubby got two catfish fillets, and I had catfish with shrimp. The fish was fresh and deliciously crispy fried! The coleslaw and potato salad were also good, and the hush puppies disappeared fast! Note that the place looks a little worn down, and the vibe is definitely "dive" :) But it just reminds us of the kinds of little seafood joints you find on the coast: humble, but fresh and tasty. The counter service was friendly and pleasant, too. For what it is, this is the best kind of place for fried seafood. Not fancy, but definitely downhome. We'll try it again. read more

Looking at the photos on FB of this place, I just had to try it. We got a fish nugget kids meal w/ fries, a sausage, Whiting sandwich w/ fries, & medium shrimp w/ fries. The service was ok...not overly friendly or rude. The food was fresh. It just didn't have seasoning on the fish or shrimp. They do sprinkle a seasoning on the fries that kind of tasted like taco seasoning. I didn't care for it much. The cocktail sauce was not good either. It didn't taste like any I've ever had before. We also got 2 cake slices from them which were $4.99 ea. We haven't tasted those yet, but I was told they come from Favors, so I know that cake is usually ok. I will update this review if it's not. The building could use some updating. The lot has 5 spaces in the front, but there is somewhere to park if they are ever super busy. I can't say that I will be back. Y'all! This fish was so good. I have been in NC for 5 years and I never go to fish places because it's just not cooked the same like where I am from. But my brother is here to visit and he wanted fried fish so I searched and searched and none of the pics were jumping out at me and then I remembered I had passed J & J on the way to Durham one day and I said that I would try it. The parking lot isn't that big but I was able to find a parking space fairly easily there is also a drive through if you don't want to go in. But I saw where the cars were sitting in line and it's because they make the food fresh. So keep that in mind if you want to go through the drive through. When I walked in the place was cool. It's not a fancy place but I wasn't worried about that I just wanted good fish. It took the cashier a minute to come up to the register but when he did I ordered the catfish plate and it came with 2 sides + hushpuppies. We ordered Mac and cheese, collards and fries. I paid about $22 which included fountain drinks. The restaurant + bathroom were decent. There was a server that brought the food and made sure that the tables were cleaned off. They don't refill drinks so everything is kind of self served and all the condiments are on the table. Overall if you are looking for good fried fish, this is your place. read more

I visited this establishment on Miami Blvd (Hwy 70) twice this week. Don't know why I went back a second time, but I did. Silly me. I ordered 5 chicken legs. Without checking the box of chicken prior to leaving , I rushed off to work. When I got to work, I was horribly surprised. The chicken legs were burnt. I immediately called to complain. They said bring the order back and they would replace it. The next day, I bought the order back. They cooked a fresh batch of chicken legs and they appeared to be fine. Once I got to work and bit into one leg, it was awful. It tasted like it was cooked in old grease and there was absolutely no seasoning on it. I don't normally write bad reviews but I have to make the reader aware. Apparently the place was sold to people who don't know how to cook. He pulls her aside and asks if she okayed this, and she told him she did. So he scolded her then made her come tell me it's not possible anymore while he stayed in the back. I'm like no ma'am. You assured me it was fine prior to me driving 30 min to get here. Whatever break down in communication you have is not between you and your manager. She then attempts to tell me she misunderstood me. No not when you just admitted to your boss you authorized it, do not insult me, you know what you said. Now my head is spinning, because I'm upset and angry so I proceed to change my order to the catfish special for $9.99. The manager then says, "Okay since the order is already made, I'll give it to you for the price of the catfish special." Okay that's fine I just need to eat. I was so upset I didn't even check the order before I left and that's something I never do. Huge mistake! Riding in the car and took a bite of chicken and literally my lips went NUMB because they POURED the seasoning ON TOP of the food. Not cooked in it. I couldn't even eat it. This is a small restaurant. Majority of the customers that came in were having take-out. I tried the drive through but no one came to the window, so i went inside. I loved that there sanitation score was a 100! I ordered the wings (lemon pepper and hot)which came with a side (fries). It took about 15 minutes. My meal was good, no complaints. I can't even begin to say how awful the food is here. My stomach didn't start hurting until the next day, maybe it's just the thought of how bad the food was! I will say the employees are nice... The first time I ate there I had a fish sandwich, which was just okay. My dining partner was sick all night after eating the scallops and didn't want to ever go back. The next time I went was for what they said is a Chicago style Italian beef sandwich, which is in their TV ad. Honey, I'm from Chicago and they don't have a clue what a beef sandwich is or how to prepare it! On the menu it says you can get it mild or hot, wet or dipped. For those from Chicago you know what this means and you'd think you're in the right place. I got mild and dipped. Well my sandwich was not dipped, nor was it wet, it was greasy!! The bun was sooo greasy I couldn't pick it up. The beef was like gyro meat cut off the spit and placed on the grill. And I think they just poured grease from the grill onto the beef mixed with water to make the sandwich "wet." I have never had a bad beef sandwich in my life, but now I can say I did. The fries were nasty too. They had this crunchy stuff fried onto them and strangely, not very warm. I gave up on the bun, just eating the few strips beef out of it and the some of the cold green peppers that buried it. I also had a few fries and then threw it all in the trash. I soda was good, but basically was a $5.00 soda as the food was only worthy of the trash can. When I arrived no one was in the place except me, yet there were 3 cars parked out front. J&J has friendly service oriented employees. The food that we had however, was mediocre at best. I had the medium large fried shrimp and it was over-breaded and over cooked! Over-cooking shrimp is a big no no. The collards had a piece of meat on the bone in them, and it was tasteless and kind of gross. The green beans were okay. The hushpuppies were pretty tasteless. My wife's popcorn shrimp were better but very small. She liked the cole slaw. This is our second visit and will be our last. This is my first ever yelp review. I was compel to provide some info to future customers and the owner! I always want to give a non-franchise place a chance. You never know what gem you will find. Unfortunately this place was not it. This review is not to bash this place, but to give a feedback to the owner of this place a chance to improve. I ordered their crab cake, scallops with Mac & Cheese, green beans and their chicken wing. A grocery store, cheap frozen crab cake, scallops would have tasted better then what I got served. I don't think scallops was even scallops. The crab cake...not sure i can even taste any crabs. Not only the taste of the food but it really didn't feel good in my mouth. It really was that bad. I had to throw out after 1/2 eaten. Mac & Cheese: So water down and tasteless. I mean i am kinda a person who would rate Kraft Mac & Cheese a 10!! This didn't even come close. This one, one bite then trash. Green beans: Just warmed up can of green beans without any seasoning...so i ate this even though it was tasteless. Ok, ok i mean i had to eat something, I was hungry!!! Chicken wing: Yes a wing, Thank the lord that I only ordered one wing to try. Well I wasn't disappointed. Take a wing, drop into some flour and maybe some salt, fry. Yep, that is what you get. Small restaurant, small parking lot, quiet. But holy crap, the food. I ordered a simple fried shrimp plate with a side of potato salad and fries, while my boyfriend got the fried clam strips with potato salad and mac and cheese. He adored his clam strips, I nearly killed myself trying to eat every single shrimp on my plate, and we were both losing it over the potato salad. Seriously some good, GOOD food for the price, and they even have homemade pickles and incredibly tasty cake slices of all kinds up front. Don't let its appearance fool you. Totally worth it.
