Hands down our favorite breakfast place. People working there could not be nicer and the food is excellent home style cooking. Reminds me of places in the east coast. Sweet tea is refreshing. Love, love, love Izzy's Cafe! We are new to the area and decided to do some exploring of the local restaurants. Checked the Yelp reviews and Izzy's stood out. Arrived late yesterday morning with my wife and son and we enjoyed a really, really good breakfast. My Country Eggs Benedict were great -- essentially biscuits and gravy with a poached egg on top. Gravy was excellent, as were the grits. My wife loved her omelette and my son loved his chicken fried steak with hash browns. Great waitresses and service to boot. Got to give them 5 stars -- best breakfast I've had in a long time. The menu is huge and we can't wait to get back to try some of the other items (especially the fried apple pie, which we were too full to order at the end!). read more

Thank you for completely ignoring my husband and I. We got our drinks quickly and waited and waited and WAITED to have our order taken. Getting frustrated my husband politely waved down a worker and she just smiled and WALKED AWAY! We continued to wait until a server went and took the order of the table that came in after us! That's when I just left the money for our drinks and walked out. No apology, no, "Don't worry guys we'll be right with you". Literally nothing. I've been looking for a nice southern-style cafe like this. Doesn't look like much from the outside. I was hesitant at first, but inside is pleasantly comfortable and cozy. And the food alone is worth the trip! The only downside is that their hours are short. They close early: hours are mon-wed 7am-2pm, thurs-fri 7am-8pm, sat 6am-2pm. The staff was very friendly, and since it was our first time, the waitress gave us some suggestions on what to try - I had the pork chop special which was excellent. This is my favorite place for breakfast. The staff is very nice and they have The Best Pancakes! I can't explain how delicious their buttermilk pancakes are, the center is so soft and it just melts in your mouth. I also really like their coffee mugs. They have random coffee mugs from different places and different sayings. I'm always looking froward to what mug I will have. Their very nifty. If you haven't tried their pancakes your missing out!! My husband also really enjoys their biscuits and gravy. According to him it's "the best biscuits and gravy in El Cajon." Overall, everything I have ordered here, I've never been disappointed. This is home style everything!!! Breakfast is amazing, and their BBQ is sooooo good. Portions are big, and their pies are amazing! Warning, if you let them put cheese on your food, be prepared for it, you'll be hitting the gym for a week, hahaha! I went here for a brunch date today with 3 other people, and this place was great! I had the hot Louisiana links with eggs over medium and hash browns with a side of fruit. The prices can be a little on the upper side ($11-20), but the portions are HUGE! The service was very nice, they were a little scattered because it was so busy, but we eventually got everything we needed. I would definitely recommend this place and come back here again. read more

Great little breakfast spot. Fantastic food and an awesome menu. I had the croissant French toast. Filled with cream cheese and peaches, it was amazing. Nothing like your everyday French toast. Others in my party had biscuits and gravy. They say it's the best they've ever had. My sausage links were just like I like them and eggs perfectly cooked. I will keep coming back. I tried this place because of the rave reviews. I wanted so bad to like it but unfortunately I wouldn't feed my dog the plates my husband and I were given. I ordered the old timer with brisket and eggs. The brisket was flavorless and dry the eggs cold and runy just all together very unappetizing. The only positive part of the plate would have to be the white gravy...and even that's pushing it. Maybe I came on a bad day but I don't care to find out.. read more

A classic family oriented diner with good, down home style food. Similar to Tylers of Texas but more friendly and the portions are human sized. As opposed to dinosaur sized. But I still took some home! Went here for the first time on a Saturday morning and were seated right away. First impression, very friendly and welcoming staff. Has indoor or outdoor seating. Much more quiet outside. I had blueberry pancakes with grits. Very good. Hubby had corned beef hash and eggs, hash browns which he gave three stars. The hash is that stuff that looks like it comes out of a can but he likes it that way. Not my thing. Always a full cup of coffee. We're returning to try the BBQ. Limited parking in the back with lots of street parking. Check other reviews for hours. Close at 2:00 most days. Fairly close to Parkway Plaza and easy Highway 8 access. read more

I've been to this little diner several times in the past. Their food is pretty decent. There is always a line to wait for a table but lacks any adequate seating for those waiting. This can be hard for elderly or those with disabilities. I happen to be one so it was a bit uncomfortable. It's a very muggy day today and the air inside was very thick and unpleasant. However, they did have fans going everywhere so that did help. The one thing that really kind of grossed me out was when I picked up the salt shaker, the outside of it was greasy. Obviously the previous customers had greasy hands when they used it and the bus people didn't think to wipe any of these items off. I think restaurant-businesses should be more conscious of this. I'll come back but just wanted to leave this so hopefully the owner will read and make a few changes for the comfort of their guests. read more

A must for breakfast in the San Diego area! We recently had a most "full filling", exceptionally well prepared and reasonably priced breakfast at Izzy's Cafe in El Cajon. It was difficult to choose from a variety complete menu but settled on home smoked baby back ribs, home fries and eggs with a side of delicious pancakes for an extra buck. We wanted outside seating and the service was outstanding. John took our order by memory and attended to us throughout along with a number of other friendly servers checking on us. I never made it for dinner as there is very limited hours thurs / fri till 8pm... I finally made it for dinner and their barbecue brisket sent me over the top! I was so impressed I had to invite all my neighbors to dinner the next Friday night as I felt they were missing out on such a great resturant as neither had been to Izzy's for breakfast or dinner.... There is going to be a line so count on that but it is worth it. Wasn't impressed today. Our waitress forgot to ring in our food and tried to blame it on the kitchen taking too long. She also forgot the modifications we asked for on our items and never came by to see how our food was so we never had a chance to inform her about the mistake. She did bring us a free dessert to attempt to make up for her mistake, but once we asked for our check and I told her the food was made wrong, she took one $3 drink off our check and that was it. This restaurant has preferred customers with reservations that may never show up at all. I was giving a compliment and the lead waitress yelled at me making false accusations. I had completely stopped talking to anyone of the staff except when my meal was screwed up. I had given a tip of one cent. This was such a hostile environment. I had forgot my smart phone. I came back and waiter John got it for me and wished be a good day. And I complimented him, "It is great to meet an honest man with customer service skills." She started yelling at him with me walking out the door. This restaurant has their preferred customers. And I am not one of them like many other hard working males.
