What great food and friendly staff! We walked in without a reservation. No wait. The crabcakes and their fried spinach were cooked perfectly! My husband and I couldn't stop talking about it after. So good!! We ended up here after we went after another restaurant that was only accepting reservations (this place ended up being way better than the other spot). I didn't want this meal to end. Kathy had the CRAB AND SHRIMP PENNE: Tossed with a homemade rose sauce. I am telling you, the sauce was memorable; lighter than a pink vodka sauce, never have had this. A great combination in this very generous portion. We all enjoyed just a great cup of Decaf cofffee. Only making a fuss about this, because it was a very generous cup and the coffee was perfect. Seriously, just coffee, but tasted great. We are always glad to get here whenever we can, sometimes only a year or two but we three have been dining here for years! Islands Fish Grill is a small, cozy spot in Indialantic that fills up quickly -- and with that comes a lively (sometimes loud) atmosphere once the tables fill.. but it's worth the small distraction, as everything we tasted was incredibly fresh and worth the buzz. Our server Miles was super charming, funny, and made the evening feel easy and fun. Service like that makes all the difference. We started with oysters, and I love that they offer them in so many preparations. The raw were briny and bright and the broiled with spinach; I'd happily order again. The crab cakes were next-level -- thick, rich, perfectly fried, generous and paired with basil pesto in more of a caprese style. Hands down, the best crab cakes I've EVER had. For entrées, I went with the special: sheep's head (don't worry -- it's a fish, not an actual sheep's head!). The fish was delicate and cooked beautifully, topped with an onion crust that came with a sauce so good they should be bottling and selling it. On the side, I had the fried spinach -- which deserves its own standing ovation. It might honestly be the best spinach I've ever had cooked any way, anywhere. The whole experience felt like one of those meals where every dish had a highlight, and I left already planning my return. What a fantastic dinner! We loved everything about this place - from the excellent service (Miles was our server), to the delicious fresh seafood. We started with a glass of wine (with some assistance from our server - he had outstanding recommendations). Then enjoyed fresh fish, grits, fried spinach, mashed potatoes and tasty clam chowder. We ended with a slice of key lime pie. Everything was perfectly prepared, made to order and a terrific introduction to the Melbourne area. This place lives up to the hype and ratings!!! 10 Star Meal!! You need to get the amazingly delicious onion crusted snapper, fried spinach, and Grits!! Snapper was a mix of salted onion crust sitting on top of a sweet sauce...perfect blend and cooked perfectly as it was tender and moist. Fried spinach was uniquely addicting...I wanted more! Grits were great...smooth with some texture and blended well as the right starch for the dish. Ambiance was nice. Bar was empty on a Wednesday night and has about 10 seats. Service was fantastic even if it was just 4 servers. They have beer, soda and wine for beverage options. Parking is free at the back and shared with beachside cafe. Dinner last night was so good that my partner suggested I lick the plate. I didn't because it is a restaurant but yes it was that good. Start with the appetizers - we went with their potato skins which were alright but the shrimp appetizer was outstanding. I would go back just for that but then I would have missed the main course. I had the onion crusted snapper and my companion went with a mahi-mahi blackened special. They were both incredible. As for dessert, I usually skip that but the mention of creme brulee lit up my eyes and that was all she wrote. I tasted his key lime pie which was also delicious. Parking can be a bit tricky but well worth it. Our reservation was for Saturday evening at 7:00 pm. Our table wasn't ready immediately but the hostess was so sweet. Based on other reviews we got the Thai Shrimp & Bacon Citrus Chips as starters. The shrimp was good but the Chips were AMAZING. My husband said it was like movie theater popcorn, you want to stop eating them but just can't because it's so good. I got the grouper special with a pesto parm crust, broccolini, parm grits. My husband got the onion crusted grouper with broccolini and house side salad. Both grouper were very good but we both preferred the onion crusted. The grits were so creamy and seasoned beautifully. We both said this was one of the best meals out we've had in awhile. As a note, they only serve beer & wine which wasn't a problem for us but patrons should be aware. read more

I really enjoyed my food and interactions with the staff. The place is situated in a wacky building off a side street on the busy road and you enter into the back of the it to get to the hostess stand. My server, Yanni, thoroughly explained my dining options and I decided to with the special menu in which has a list of starters, some entrée choices and dessert. A generous oinion crusted fillet was sumptuous and moist, the grits were great and the friedspinach were perfect accompaniments. I went for the Caesar with the grilled Almaco jack and upon trying the onion crusted, suddenly lamented my choose lol. That being said it was a lovely piece of fish and a great big ol salad to take home. I'd skip the key lime pie, myself. We'd had enough food and this was a small piece that was tasty but not anything absurdly different from another key lime piece we'd had. We'd come back again and yeah sit at the bar! When we went into the restaurant, there is a sewage smell. We should have left immediately but husband wants to stay. Oyster is not bad . For entree, crab cake is very salty. Fresh catch of the day is under cooked. This is definitely the worst seafood place we tried while visiting Melbourne on vacation this week. Will not recommend. We were in town for a short trip & a colleague picked out this local gem! They tout daily, fresh-never-frozen fish specials. They're generally mostly mild, flaky white fishes. *SPICY THAI CHILI SHRIMP (6 large grilled shrimp tossed in a thai chili glaze topped with mango salsa and highlighted with a light sriracha sauce) - I enjoyed this! No complaints. Really nice balance of sweet heat. *BUFFALO CRAB AND SHRIMP MAC AND CHEESE (Buffalo crab and shrimp over housemade bacon mac and cheese) - It was a bit weird to me that the pasta was penne but the flavors were good. *ONION CRUSTED GROUPER (Crispy onion crusted over bacon citrus glaze with a choice of two sides.) - This preparation is their signature dish and almost EVERY SINGLE TABLE had this. So, I naturally ordered it. I had one of the fish specials (grouper) and it was a generous serving size! For my sides, I picked the fried spinach and WOW. Gimme flash fried spinach any day because it is deeee-lightful! My second side was their corn special. No complaints! We closed out our meal with: *KEY LIME PIE - Good tang! Nice & creamy with a homemade graham crust *CREME BRULEE - I believe this had a bit of coffee-infused flavor in it. Really nice crispy top as expected from creme brulee! FINALLY....got to this local place....and within 15 minutes from opening they were almost out of tables...all with locals. So if you do not have a reservation....beware. We were seated and our waitress was pretty good. We had all the specials and apps explained. Our crab cake app came out and you can tell it was fresh. Delicious. My Mahi Mahi special was not the largest piece of fish, especially compared to the grouper portion. However, the berry salsa and garlic mashed potatoes were good. The asparagus left me wanting.....did not add much to the plate. Onion-crusted grouper was a large portion...there was perhaps a tiny bit too much onion......but it was good. The fried spinach was pretty good however it was just a tad bit salty. Perhaps together with the onions, it was too much? Now two pro tips: PARKING....is horrible....behind the restaurant off 6th Ave. So park out toward the road, not near the building.....that way you do not have to back through a gauntlet of cars parked. SPECIALS....we ran into a situation where we were at the first table seated....told the fish and then I overheard the waitress and waiter saying they were ab0ut out of grouper 10 minutes from opening......HEAD SCRATCH. FUN FACT: According to them they are the only local restaurant that is licensed to buy fish from the local boats.....not sure if it is true but the fish was fresh.... EDIT: Besides the desire to hit this well-known local place what brought us here was a free app coupon from a Golf Tournament they supported for National Veterans Homeless Support for Brevard county. They are known for their Onion Crusted Catch of the Day and there is a reason for that - it's outstanding! I had the Snapper and it was the best fish I've ever had and I am very picky about my fish. I feel a bit bad in writing this review, because we neglected to photograph the first bites (not pictured, Thai Fish Chowder, Bacon Citrus Crisps). But when a spot deserves acclaim, you give due credit. Beer & wine are available; good options for both categories Called at 5pm, and able to squeeze in a reservation for 4 immediately at open (promptly at 5:30pm, doors are closed beforehand, but there is a lovely entry area as you approach from the rear parking lot). Noticed the exotics planted along the walkway, and found a freshly dropped frangipani flower for the Mrs! My entire family thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Islands Fish Grill. The mains, sides and desserts were cooked perfectly and every bite was delicious. Mains ordered: Crispy Onion Chicken, Crispy Onion Sheephead, nightly special of Lemon-pepper Almaco Jack over parm garlic grits, and Thai shrimp cocktail & crab cake caprese starters. Desserts (scratch!): Dreamsicle crème brûlée & chocolate mousse (effectively a nougat based on thickness). The waitstaff, bartender & hosts were wonderful. Miles, their lead server, carried himself very well, and set a great example for their newer folks (while green were doing a great job). I thought this was a good restaurant! I really enjoyed the food. I'd go back, but it wasn't 100% perfect. First, the service was good! Everything was pretty quick and everyone was nice. The ambiance was one of the things that I think could be improved. I love the effort they put into decorating, but this was a relatively loud and not super relaxing restaurant. I loved the menu. It was really creative! The only thing I'd change about the menu is to add cocktails to the wine and beer list. I loved my food, especially the fried spinach and onion crusted. So fun. My only food related critique is that there were a lot of things they were out of. They were out of oysters before 7 PM, and they were also out of one of the kinds of fish. YUM. This place has AWESOME food. Don't be discouraged by the fact that it's in a small strip mall and you are confused on where to park or enter ( both around back, by the way). Also, don't be dismayed at the eclectic interior once you get inside. The service was friendly and attentive and everything was great. My boyfriend and I came here Friday for date night and were blown away by how much we loved it. He's lived in Melbourne for 13 years and this was his first time at the restaurant. Islands is tucked away right off the beach and is sandwiched in between some breakfast spots and local shops. There's nothing pretentious about this place- it's super small and quaint. The decor is like a 90's beach condo but I think that adds to the charm. We started off with a bottle of rose, half a dozen lightly steamed oysters and the caprese crab cakes. Our server knew the menu extremely well which I feel like is rare in restaurants these days. Our oysters came from Maryland and the fresh fish comes just south from Sebastian. We got the onion crusted snapper for our entrees. The food was all fantastic and the portions were really generous. I can't say anything bad. This is an unassuming quaint spot. They are very welcoming, with very attentive service. Aside from all that the food is Good! We had the oysters which were from up North. My husband and I each had a different kind of fish, both part of the catch of the day. Mine was Sheephead with mango salsa. His was Almaco Jack encrusted with onions. We had never heard of either before! Neither was fried and they were delicious! I had the mash potatoes with a vegetable ratatouille; and my husband had the mash potatoes with fried spinach. I wasn't crazy about doing this to spinach, but it is pretty creative and tastes good, just like anything you fry! read more
