They're also now the only school in the Northeast United States authorized to teach Machida Karate. The instructors at Matsunami are direct students of Lyoto and Chinzo Machida, who themselves are Shotokan teachers and pro MMA fighters. At Matsunami karate you can expect to get the best of both worlds in martial arts training with Machida Karate. The Machida Karate program is a fun and challenging karate class that also teaches MMA style drilling, conditioning and some ground fighting. The atmosphere is relaxed but focused and the classes are challenging. I've been training it for 3 years now and can't recommend it enough. Try a class.

Stripes and belts are earned, not expected to go by a schedule. They have a great work ethic and want committed students to work hard and learn the various moves correctly, for everyone's safety. They let you trial it for a month, and during that time, they give the kids a belt and get them excited so you'll sign up for the year. A few weeks after that, my son completely lost interest and threw a fit every time we made him go. I called to see if we could work something out, and they told me the best they could do was to let me pay for another 7 months (over $900) to "buy out" the agreement. I told them I didn't want to pay for something I wasn't going to and didn't want to use, and they threatened to send me to collections. We ended up limping through the rest of the year, going some of the time, but it was a very negative experience. Not to mention that for the younger kids, this is glorified gym class at best. I would strongly encourage folks to stay away.

I think the have a local chapter in Boston too which I have yet to visit. My forward and rear rolls were put to shame by these folks. They have great footwork and decent joint locks. There are a variety of instructors who teach over the course of the week, and all of them bring their own innovative approaches to the art, while keeping the classes friendly and safe. I would highly recommend the free drop-in class for anyone who is thinking about trying a martial art. Aikido focuses on maximum effect for minimum effort, which means it is ideal for women, people of all ages, and the vertically-challenged (like me). You'll be welcomed with open arms at the Rochester dojo, and they have a beautiful and airy practice space to boot!
