I need to write an updated to my prior feedback due to a recent experience. On 12/17/16 my son was handed a new schedule which would be effective on 1/1/17. 2 weeks notice. All 3 of his class times were changed. My son is a freshman in high school with a full set schedule for the school year. He would not be able to attend the new times on a regular basis. They provided an alternative which also did not work. Keep in mind his original time and class are still in place. The owner decided to have only black belts in that class. The reason advanced belts were in the class was to help the bb practice teaching. They will no longer have this option with the new schedule. I explained the issue and was told the only viable choices were what was provided earlier. I was told my son had too many activities and he needed to chose. So after 12 years and well over 12k my son will stop doing karate effective 1/1/17. The owner says she feels badly. This is the response from the person who can fix it and won't. My son is now struggling to understand how the owner can take this position and unfortunately seeing that people don't practice what they preach. Respect is a piece of what is karate. Respect for self, respect for others ect... yet the owners recent behavior show lack of respect for many. The most frustrating part for me is the owner makes the change in a vacuum and then for our side tries to turn the blame of the issue to us. Even suggested that I reschedule his other activities; is that fair or respectful to other organizations which have their processes working? A long term student has been turned away. This is truly a sad ending, one that could have been prevented if the owner truly cared about its students. On the bright side I am teaching my son respect for himself and to not be bullied. read more

My daughter started with Murray's Martial Arts in Webster back in January of this year. She loves it. She has learned so much, it has been a great experience for her. As parents, it hasn't been as stellar. They force you into a one year contract. It is not seasonal (like spring sport, or fall sport), it does not follow the school year, it is literally every day of the year. I do not like being forced into a contract for a 7 year old child. Children are fickle and their tastes change easily. There is no way out of the contract unless your child falls severely ill or injured. I understand the business needs to make their money, but it is not fair to lock someone into something for so long. It would be nice to allow for a trial. 6 months. 3 months. Anything. Parents are allowed to watch their children, which is a catch 22. I think it is nice for some parents but it also allows the Sensei's to "perform" for the parents. There is one Sensei in particular that seems to care more about what the parents think than the kids. There was also an elimination of another Sensei without any reasoning. All in all it has not been a horrible experience and since my child loves it, I cannot give too low of a review, but I feel there are some flaws that need to be fixed. read more

We found MMAC 5 years ago, by chance. My middle child attended a birthday party and decided to use the "free week" coupon in the goody bag and after the week was up asked to be signed up for trial month. That month became a year. 5 years later that kids is the proud wearer of a brown belt and best friends that are all class mates at MMAC. This is a kid that struggled to find "their thing" having done one session of every other sport known to man (except hockey, as I often get reminded) who has blossomed under the instructors as Murray's. It is our home away from home. Especially now that my youngest also attends. Starting at 5, with a mild case of ADD and a strong will to "do her own thing", I was honestly sure she'd hate it for all the reasons her older sibling loved it. But she has just blossomed. She is more focused. She works hard every class. She does her best, every time, all the time. And it has carried over to ever other aspect of her life, especially school. I am very thankful for that birthday party invitation. MMAC has made a huge impact on my kids and our family. I have and will continue to recommend them. read more

I'm 51 years old and this past fall I unexpectedly found myself transitioning jobs. My life seemed like it was on autopilot and I felt like I was in a rut. I had long ago established a routine of going to a local gym 2-3 times a week - but it was just that...a routine. I needed to shake things up. I happened to come across an ad for Murray's Martial Art Center in Webster and decided to check it out. The result? I couldn't have been more pleased! The environment at the center is very upbeat and positive. A lot of enthusiasm and encouragement and the staff is fantastic! They respectfully challenge you and push you and I leave the training sessions feeling upbeat and fully recharged to tackle what ever life throws at me! If you are over 50 years old and think you can't learn something new, or even stretch out and touch your toes again, you're wrong! e go to the Webster location. We started in April and my daughter was only 3. When she went for her first lesson she was incredibly shy and defiant. I was so amazed at how the Senseis responded to such a strong personality. I have NEVER heard them get angry or raise their voice. Their patience never ceases to amaze me. We have been at it for six months and did our first tournament. Not only was my daughter able to get out in front of all her peers, but random parents as well. She still defiantly didnt do her push ups, and the senseis response was, well i hate push ups too with a smile. This was one of the best choices i have made. My daughter loves this commitment even if at times it is hard. It is a year long commitment but i can already tell you we will be doing this for years and when we have more children they will belong to this organization too! I've been involved in martial arts for 37 years and have known Kim Murray for that entire time. I can honestly say that martial arts has done wonders for my health-- mentally and physically. I taught karate classes for many years and have seen how the discipline involved in martial arts has helped children of all ages. Kids who came into class with behavior problems had improved focus and their overall physical health improved, too. Karate is a way of life-- the teachers teach more than just self-defense. Students are taught how to be better people and have humility and respect for others and authority. My son has been going to Murrays Martial Arts for a few years now, and what they have done to help him come out of his shell and have more confidence in himself is amazing. This is not just a "job" it is there passion they love what they do and it shows. They treat every student as if they were there family! Any martial arts academy that promises a black belt in 3 years or less, is a place more interested in money than in the quality of their students. These belts are given to students not earned. The instructors themselves should not be wearing their black belts. The school itself is very unprofessional. So much profanity and so much flirting between instructors as well as with students. I am very surprised that the owners allows this to continue. Lastly the school run tournaments that are in no way distinguished on any martial arts level by the system. This school is a true McDojo and is only out for profit. read more

Martial arts has changed my life. I used to be a shy 9 year old that had a tough time making friends and speaking up in class rooms. Confidence. Focus. Discipline. Fun. Self-defense. My son is 4 and has just recently begun training with Sensei Steph and Sensei Britt. He has had no classroom experiences yet and is working on focus and discipline. The Senseis are very patient with him and are working with him too ensure he is comfortable with the curriculum and can participate more effectively in class.
