Cozy & charming Old School mountain restaurant complete with old chair lift in small wooden entry and vintage props and photographs adorning restaurant walls, perfect for our spring ascent with the Porsche Club, a cool 60 degrees & 6700-ft higher; and 20 below the base below. Given the snug interior, the patio offers some extra seating al fresco, and it was busy on a Tuesday lunch. Small diner menu with some German offerings that lend that Alpine aire to compliment the treed mountain views from the back side of the restaurant. The Mountain Soul $18.10 that all us Fraus in the club seemed to embrace featured 2 tasty snappy brats, tart vinegar forward German tater salad, stewed red cabbage (oddly no sauerkraut), and a hunk of sweet corn kerneled cornbread, complete with the diner staple dispensers with the slider top honey globes on each table if more sweetness were needed. Hearty grub that, thus half+ came home making for a very tasty Round 2, that I popped into a Pretzel Dawg Bun, yum! Herr hubby as did most of the guys opted for a bowl of chili $17.07 with both chunks of beef and beans and was pretty tasty with medium heat and thickness. Sodas $4.65 are the most we've paid of late but feeding up a picturesque mountain comes at a cost haha. Our waitress was efficient during ordering and the food came out quickly for our large group of 25. However, our tab got messed up not really surprising given our size, but glad we caught it nonetheless. She was very apologetic and then packed us one of their beautiful specialty small pies to go, with our amended bill. Strawberry rhubarb, plenty for 2, flaky crust, very sweet though, so for those on sugar watch, this pie is not for you haha but sure to satisfy the pie lovers, and apple struedel is here of course too! Happy to support Mt Lemmon businesses and the Iron Door's charm is a worthwhile escape with a huge parking lot across the street. I had the quesadilla, and my husband had the baked potato with chili (cheese, sour cream, etc.)on it - both were wonderful! We love their cornbread so much that we got some of that to take home. We could not have asked for a better server, I wish I could post his name, but I don't remember it. He did a wonderful job. And don't forget those individual pies I had whipped cream. Four-stars for really top-notch service. The food? It's A-ok. We dined there for breakfast and it was your average diner type of meal. We were seated right away as it was a quiet morning. Our server, Michael was so nice and super attentive. I love the giant fireplace! It really makes the space so cozy. For breakfast we ordered the two egg breakfast with hashbrowns and toast, and the kids waffle for my daughter. Breakfast was simple, nothing out of the ordinary, but we were satisfied. They seem to be known for their pie, so maybe we'll return sometime to try one.They offer a discount for the ski lift with breakfast so we took them up on that. We took drive up to Ski Valley to get a glimpse of the white stuff and stopped by here for lunch. They accommodated our need to be seated away from lots of people. Our table had a great view. I chose the Turkey Run sandwich and subbed a side salad with ranch. My husband got the George Gorge salad and subbed a bowl of chili for his side. My sandwich was tasty and my husband enjoyed his as well. The side salad was quite small for the additional $4 charge. The chili had a little kick to it and it was good. Amazing cozy breakfast!! We got the egg and meat breakfast plates and everything was delicious especially the hashbrowns! They give you plenty of jelly and Dijon mustard for the toast and sausage or brats. We also got personal pies and those were amazing. Delicious restaurant with great views! We came on a weekday, and the wait was still pretty long...but for good reason - the food is amazing! We were seated at a small table and given menus. I ordered half of George's Gorg (a turkey Reuben). After the first bite, I regretted not getting the whole sandwich. It was so good! The chili was tasty too, but the sandwich definitely stole the show. Speaking of stealing the show, we were full but still ordered dessert. We decided to take a drive up the mountain for lunch. We hadn't been to the Iron Door for several years. The dining room is the same, small, very few tables but clean. Their menu was appetizers, salads, soups and sandwiches. No burgers or fried food. I had the Claim Jumper which is a French Dip. The portion was very small, but tasty. The au jus came in a little plastic condiment cup. It was hard to get a good dip. I opted for a salad upgrade rather than the sides offered. My sandwich and salad was $21 which was not any kind of bargain. If the sandwich had been larger with more than a small dollop of meat, maybe it would be worth it. $4 upcharge for a salad that was lettuce, some chopped tomatoes and 2 cucumber slices was worth about $1 more. I didn't want onions and didn't know it came with black olives, which I don't care for. No biggie. My husband ordered the mac & cheese and added green chiles. It came in a small cup/crock for almost $13. It was also tasty, but portion to cost was wrong. My husband eats very light for lunch and he orders mac & cheese a lot. He usually takes over half of it home, but not today. There was barely enough to eat at the restaurant. $4.50 for a soda was high too. I have had their pies before and opted for the blueberry peach. It was delicious but $9 was probably okay, but I'm glad I didn't add ice cream. I took most of it home. I forgot to take photos. Shelby was our server. He did a decent job but nothing spectacular. They charge to use a credit card, which seems to be the norm these days. However, when the bill was brought to me, they had already added the surcharges to each individual item. He didn't ask if I was paying cash or card. Originally, I was going to pay cash, but I didn't want to pay the credit card charge already printed. So, I used a credit card. Another thing that I didn't like was their suggested tips of 15, 18, 20 25% all on the inflated bill that included the surcharge. The bill came to $56.02 including tax. Tips should be based on the cost of the meal without adding tax & credit card charges. It was a nice drive up the mountain, but 2 1/2 hours round trip for lunch that had small portions was hardly worth it. We won't be back. read more

Great (and the only spot) right next to the Ski Valley lift station. Due to its limited seating capacity it can get pretty packed during skiing season. Luckily for us, when we were there there was not much snow and very few skiers/tourists. The ambiance has an old charm to it and they have lots of old stuff on display such as a mechanic teller. They also has a huge fireplace in the middle with dining tables surrounding it. Must be pretty cozy when the fire is lit. Food here is decent too. We ordered the "famous" hot chili soup, Claim Jumper (roast beef with Swiss cheese on French bun) , Gobbler (turkey with bean stouts and cranberry sauce, cream cheese on rye bread). I like both. Depends on if you are hungry (order Claim Jumper), or want some refreshing sandwiches that are not too heavy (order Gobbler). Service was excellent too. Mostly senior servers and they are very attentive to customers. Keep in mind they close at 4:30pm (kind only early but understandably it's on top of the Mt Lemmon)! read more

Drove up to this place to have lunch with our dog realize that even though they have an outdoor patio, they are not pet friendly at all! Even if your dog is emotional support pet I guess they have nobody with PTSD there they said it's not a service dog! People should ban this restaurant they wouldn't even let us order to go, but yet on their website says call to order. The service person at the counter was very rude. The restaurant looks bigger from the outside than it feels on the inside, and that's not a bad thing. The dining area is cozy, especially when they have a fire blazing in the big fireplace. There's a good selection of beer and wine, and of course on the reverse side of the table tent is the pie listing. Their pies are awesome. Be sure to save room for some pie. The chili and cornbread is very good. The topping on the cornbread involves melted brown sugar. The chili is a little spicy but fairly tame for Tucson spicy. It's very good. I had the BBQ chicken salad with an extra side of 1000 Islands dressing. It was an excellent choice and highly recommended. The service was a little off though I couldn't quite put my finger on why. The server was very nice and he was certainly attentive, but there was a slight awkwardness that made it feel a little awkward. After a 7-mile hike with 1,600 elevation gain to get to the ski lift at Lemmon, we wanted to cool down and grab a beer and a quick snack. We ate a picnic lunch at the top of Lemmon halfway through our hike, so we weren't there for the lunch options. For where it's located, the prices are fine, but it's somewhat pricey for what you get (as I noticed other people getting their meals). One table commented that their teenage boys would need to have a second meal to fill up. I didn't think the portions were terrible, but they weren't enormous (except the pie). So the pie. $9 per slice and can get it warm and with whipped cream, crumble top or double crust. If you want ice cream, it will cost you $10. We opted for a wild berry pie with no dairy topper. It was excellent and the equivalent of two pie slices, served like a personal pan pizza (round). We shared it amongst two adults and a 10yo. I had a beer for $7, and we paid cash-- around $20 and tip after. We paid case to not get overcharged by the 3.5% additional charge for credit card purchases. We sat outside and it aas a great place to get a refill on water, a little bite, a little rest, and a cold Tucson beer (cans/bottles only though sadly) after a hike. read more

Don't waste your money on lunch here. The sandwiches were made with low quality, cheap turkey, and the bacon was the instant kind that you microwave. It was also almost impressive how bad the German potato salad was - the texture was gelatinous or almost slimy and it barely had any flavor. I tried my friend's mac n cheese, which was an unnatural vibrant orange, and it tasted like the cheese sauce came from a can. The only saving grace was the roasted red pepper soup, which was underseasoned a bit, but nothing a bit of salt couldn't fix. The pies were also good, but their crusts were a bit soggy on the bottom. My hubs and I had lunch here today, and this place deserves a five star review and far more love than some of these other reviewers give. This place is pretty much at the top of Mt Lemmon... the view is absolutely fantastic! Was there a wait despite 1/2 the restaurant being empty? Yes... was it too long? No... people need to shut up, go outside, and enjoy the view. They call your name through an outside loud speaker... you'll hear it. Were they short staffed? Yes, who isn't but consider this... it took you an hour to drive up here... how many employees will make that choice? Give grace to those that choose to work here because every one of them was friendly and clearly working hard. Does the building need some freshening up? Yes, but call it ambiance! ItIt's beautiful up here... just look at the pretty aspens! And the food itself? It's so good! I had the BBQ Chicken Salad. It was fantastic! Fresh veg, the tenderest chicken. Hubs had the chili, sandwich combo and loved both. So much so I forgot to take pictures!... but then there's the pie... oh so much pie. We opted for cherry crumb and blueberry peach. What a treat! Mt. Lemmon, situated by Tucson, is the tallest mountain in Southern Arizona. With its peak at over 9000 ft, many locals escape the summer AZ heat by visiting Mt. Lemmon. Typical temperature difference from Tucson to the top of Mt. Lemmon is 20 to 30 degrees. When Tucson is hitting 100 degrees, one would need a light jacket to visit Mt. Lemmon. Iron Door Restaurant is a well known restaurant right next to the ski lift. During non-winter months, this restaurant becomes a place to enjoy the view of the green mountain and humming birds. The view is spectacular, and the venue is quite rustic and charming. The outdoor deck typically has humming bird feeders unless there are too many flies and bees as these insects tend to bother the patrons. Humming birds of the Iron Door are quite a sight; they are unusually large, almost obese from overfeeding while perched on the feeders - a sad commentary to Americana through amazing birds... The bathrooms are clean, and these are welcoming change from the park's nasty bathrooms (The park must need more money to keep bathrooms cleaner...) The service is quite good. Very friendly. Maddie was courteous and charming. She greets and completes any conversation with a mini curtsy with smile. So...what about the darn food... I procrastinate... Well, the food is below average at best. Chili was mushy and bland, not tasty, and lacking flavor. The brats unimpressive. The corn bread was good, somewhat on the sweet side. The pies are the best this restaurant has to offer, and I do recommend them. There seem to be at least 10 different types of pies. I'll say one should not drive up here for food. However, it is worthwhile to visit for the scenery, the humming birds, the pies, great service and the clean bathroom. read more

I got a bowl of chili and a mini 5" personal cherry crumble pie. The chili came with onions and cheese and tasted pretty darn good. I would recommend. I ordered the Black Diamond chicken salad and it was poor quality and not as described. It appeared to be chopped chicken and mayonnaise only, mixed together probably moments before as it was not cold, or worse yet, not properly stored. The menus said it had walnuts and there was not a single walnut. The mixture was dumped on top of some limp romaine lettuce that the decaying edges of lettuce that is ready to be thrown out, along with some canned olives. The bread accompaniment was two small baguette sized sluce of half dried out white bread, with no butter. Truly bad. On a recent weekend on Mt Lemmon, we decided to spend the morning having breakfast at Iron Door, and then riding the chair lift. An unexpected surprise was that breakfast entrees included a lift ticket ($15), so we lucked out. We were one of maybe 5 groups that all arrived right as the restaurant opened. They brought us in quickly, and we took seats on the patio, well distanced. The staff made it clear masks were required everywhere but at the table, which I appreciated. Our server was new, and clearly didn't know the menu. But we were able to order. Our drinks came quickly and the coffee was excellent. Unfortunately I can't say the same of the food. We waited a LONG time for our meal - so long that not only did everyone who came in around the same time get served long before us, most were done eating and had left before our food arrived. The food seemed to have been sitting a bit - not cold, but also not piping hot. I had eggs, home fries (that were actually shredded hash browns) and a brat. Eggs were the requested temperature, but the brat desperately needed some grilling - it was cooked through but gray and floppy. Which was similar to my spouse's potato pancakes. Even with the food being delayed, the streusel didn't come out with the meal. It arrived with ice cream that we'd asked them to leave off, but the spiced peach flavor was lovely. There aren't a ton of options on the mountain, so I'm sure I'll be back for another try. They get the broad strokes (coffee! beer! great German menu!) right, but tweaking the actual cooking and serving could make this place amazing. read more

Right across the street from the MT. Lemmon Ski Valley, it's an American food restaurant with majority of it being sandwiches. Super friendly and a clean place. My guest and I had to Wait about 15 minutes even though it wasn't really busy, so I can imagine it on the weekends so prepare accordingly. Small menu but has key delicious elements. No fries though... lots of house made soups... and 8 different types of pies. The pies are supposed to be individual sized however I feel they can be shared ... no matter what server says. We drove up Mt.Lemmon on New Year's Eve to experience the winter wonderland after a storm brought fresh snow, and decided to get lunch. The Iron Door was the only restaurant open on the mountain, and we were so glad it was! They were busy, even though the slopes were closed. Families with cold and wet children looking for a hot meal and a warm place to regroup. The host who checked people in (I am sad that I didn't get his name) handled the crowds like a pro, keeping the atmosphere positive with his witty comments. We were given the standard wait time of 30-45 min, so we walked across to the coffee shop at the ski lifts for a cup to warm us up. 30 minutes later, it was our turn to be seated. The dining area was warm and cozy, with the biggest fireplace I've ever seen, fire roaring. Our server was friendly and quick, and had our orders in and drinks served in no time. My husband and I both decided on the soup and half sandwich, with the soup of the day being Corn Chowder. He got George's Gorge for his sandwich, and I got the Claim Jumper. Here is where the Iron Door really showed their stuff. Our sandwiches were delicious, and the soup was amazing! Everything tasted fresh, homemade and comforting! We opted to get a piece of their specialty pies to go (we were so full!), and the apple with crumble was the perfect dessert once we got home. We were so impressed with everyone who kept things running smoothly on such a busy day. From the host to the servers who helped each other at times, to the guy who kept the fire stoked while we were there.
