In Mid May 2026, I listened to a virtual community board meeting in which there had been an altercation involving the police in the early morning. While the bar had been closed, the fight had spilled outside down the block. Of particular concern was that the owner had neglected to replace his outdoor camera, and the police had noted several incidents before that. The following Monday, I decided to pay a visit, order a cider, and take in the atmosphere. At the time, the bar was pretty empty, except for a few patrons up front and empty seats. While the cider was good, the Irish Whisky Bar was truly not maintained, with broken glass and graffiti in the men's restroom, and it was not even appropriate for a grunge or dive bar. In summary, the owner really needs to take care of the establishment. Personally, I would have shut them down until everything was repaired, including replacing the outdoor camera, which is now a stipulation for maintaining their liquor license, as voted upon by Queens Community Board 1 at their monthly meeting. I moved into the hood and always wanted to check out this place. I went last Tuesday on the 13th. The bartender was nice and it was quiet. I asked him if he had a cable to charge my phone and he did. I then noticed a really bad smell at the bar. Like a dead rodent or something. I got up to go outside and came back and it was still there. Other patrons noticed it too. I still liked the bar but wanted to leave so I kindly asked for my phone back. He asked me why it was only a few minutes of me charging my phone. I just said I wanted it back and he persisted. I then said it's the smell and he told me to fuck off. Tried to go back another night at 3:15 am the bar was full and I was told it was closed. I have been going to IWB since it opened nine years ago. The bartenders are solid, friendly, funny, and personable. Prices are great and they have a good selection of draft beer as well as your standard offering of top, middle, and bottom shelf liquor. Every time I come here I have a blast. It gets a little rowdy on Friday nights when the dart leagues come in to complete, but that is part of the fun. One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood for a pint and a laugh. read more

When you go to a local dive bar at 11:00 AM you better be ready for what is coming and by that I mean that you don't know what is coming. In our case there was a small dog that did not like one of the other patrons that was eating Ramen Noodles while having a beer (let that sink in). To be honest I did prefer the dog to the person so it was of no consequence to me that the dog acted as a bouncer and chased the guy out. The music was all over which I would not consider a problem as you have to keep all six patrons happy during the early morning drinking shift. The bar tender was a nice guy, he kept up with the small talk, suggested local restaurants and kept the drinks coming. Cash is king, buy two and get one. This is a neat little bar in Astoria. It used to be known as Olde Prague Tavern but they changed the name to Irish Whiskey Bar quite some time ago - as much as I loved that place, it has not lost its charm at all. Drinks are reasonably priced and they have an interesting selection of beers, plus a really nice cozy outdoor place all the way in the back. Seating inside the bar is reminiscent of a beer hall and they often have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. I like that this place doesn't attract bros or annoying clientele and the bartenders are awesome (hi Barry!) - this is definitely a fun, no-frills, place to grab a drink or five in an intimate setting. read more

The Friday night bartender is a straight-up homophobe. I live around the corner and have been here a handful of times and it's usually not a problem but tonight he was clearly purposely avoiding serving me. I made direct eye contact with him twice and he 100% saw me waving to get his attention but he turned to look the other way, yet nobody else was waiting to be served. When I finally got his attention he went on to make an offensive remark about "jazz hands" and then 30 minutes later when I went to get another he saw me and announced "last call" at me, even though it was 2 hours before closing time. I had 2 drinks and left, feeling extremely uncomfortable. I've lived here for 15 years, and it amazes me that d-bags like this are still around. read more

All the bartenders know their trade and the beer pours come in mugs that resemble fish bowls so you will be getting some serious bang for your buck! I gave this place a try and I really tried to enjoy myself here. But I'm definitely not impressed. It's very divey, but not in the fun sense. I came here twice on Friday nights. Once last month and this past Friday. I have really come to question the crowd and the staff at this place. Both times, there have been some major fights that broke out in the bar where punches and bottles have been thrown. The bartenders seem to ignore the outbreaks and even if the offending party left, they have been let back into the bar later in the night. I tried to remove myself from everything by going to the back area or in the pool table room. Even in those areas, there have been people who tried to start other fights. Fridays are supposed to be karaoke nights but I have found the karaoke guy to be extremely rude to customers. It seems like all he does is go to the back to smoke or he gets involved with the fights in the bar and eggs people on. He also seems to like to hog the mic for himself whenever possible to sing. Last week, he was there but didn't even start karaoke which was disappointing. The head bartender that was behind the bar seems as though he doesn't care at all. In fact, I can see that he drinks behind the bar and gets drunk by the end of the night. The bathrooms are small and not cleaned enough. I just don't use them. The pool table room is so small. I don't know now anyone actually plays a decent game in there. The back area is ok to take a smoke break but some of the people that hang out back there are troublesome. It's a shame because the open space is actually very nice and feels like a fun beer hall (extra star for that). Unless the owner can do a major overhaul of the atmosphere there, I can't see anyone with half a brain wanting to go to that place. read more
